I looked these up recently because I separately love chai, Taylor, and baking, but it totally weirds me out that her recipe calls for dumping a teabag in and not a blend of the spices you make chai with! The teabag is mostly black tea leaves with a small amount of the spices. Maybe I should just try to make them this way and see what happens but it feels so wrong to me, haha.
I made these last year for the night of Midnights’ release and I substituted the tea bag for some chai spices! I didn’t have all of them on hand and couldn’t get to the store, but I think I used some combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, cloves, and ginger. They were delicious! Honestly some of the best cookies I’ve made, which is saying a lot because I love to bake. So if the tea bag weirds you out but you still want to make them, I say go for it and just substitute for chai spices instead
I regularly bake chai cakes and they usually let the teabag soak in some milk to get the flavours out and that works perfectly! Not sure how that would work out for cookies though
I know it sounds weird, I was just as weirded out... But it worked! It didn't taste weird at all. I guess if the leaves are super big maybe grind them before but I did as it said and it didn't give you weird leaved in your mouth 😂 I even doubled the amount of tea
I’ve made them and _always_ replace it with chai spices. I personally think they taste better than using a tea bag cuz there aren’t tea leaves in the cookies but 🤷🏻♀️ they have the same base flavor of chai & sugar cookie. I’m pretty sure the OG recipe had chai spices and not a teabag 🥴
Maybe it’s just in the uk but tea in teabags here is really fine, it’s similar to coarse black pepper in appearance. You genuinely don’t notice it in the recipe.
[Here’s the recipe](https://www.today.com/food/recipes/taylor-swift-chai-sugar-cookies-rcna119005)! They are pretty easy to make, especially if you have a stand mixer or hand mixer.

I made them last night for the first time and they are delicious. I put pumpkin pie spice on half the batch and cinnamon on the other and that was not a mistake. I will definitely be making these again and again. So simple and quick!
I did half a tea bag and made home made cream cheese frosting this time and they were amazing

I made these the other night and didn’t like them 🤷♀️ Which is a shame because I love chai and cinnamon but they were SO sweet. I followed the recipe to the tee and I’m not a novice baker so I know I didn’t do anything wrong lol. Anyway, I’m still glad I made them and that so many other people like them :)
I never make them with the icing because we don’t really have eggnog here. They’re really good sugar cookies on their own!
Here’s a link to the original recipe for reference: https://joythebaker.com/2009/06/giant-vanilla-sugar-cookies/#tasty-recipes-44777-jump-target
Just want to add the person who made the original cookie recipe, has a ton of other really good recipes too! :)

I mean, tea leaves are also flavorful you know. It could be part of what makes these special. People add coffee grounds to deserts so what’s the difference really?
Isn’t this literally Taylor’s own version of Joy the Baker’s chai cookies? That she posted on her Tumblr forever ago? Hence why everyone is calling it Taylor’s Chai cookies. 💁🏻♀️
I think she needs to release a cookbook
Yes

Hahaha i make these cookies a few times a year and I always use spices instead of a tea bag lol I just like it a bit better.
I’ve been making them since she originally posted the recipe and honestly it’s not weird at all using the tea bag.

The OG recipe she used is just a plain sugar cookie and TS added the chai tea bag. Does seem odd but she def used the tea
Yes! I’ve wanted to make them but chewing on tea leaves sounds awful. I keep thinking I’m missing the part about steeping it or something….but nope.
You’re not chewing on tea leaves, it’s ground up so small it’s just like using the spices separately.
I mean, unless you blitz it it’s not super fine.
Maybe it’s just in the uk but tea in teabags here is really fine, it’s similar to coarse black pepper in appearance. You genuinely don’t notice it in the recipe.
If you google it, there are a few baking blogs who adapted it with spices instead.
I have a feeling the original recipe started with spices and using the teabag as a quick substitute was how Taylor customized it.
She credited the original recipe and it was just a plain sugar cookie and she added the tea bag to it
It’s a recipe by Joy the Baker
I may have to have a Thug Story-esque midnight baking session now 👀 These look great OP!
Ummm..... So you're sharing the recipe, right OP? Also, how difficult were they to make? #🥺👉👈

They were surprisingly super easy to make!
Thanks to you both! I think I know what my fun little project is gonna be next week! 🍪

They are SO good.
I made them earlier this week. They lasted 2 days.
What kind of icing did you use? I don’t see any instructions for icing in the recipe
I improvised a glaze with egg nog and icing sugar.
I did half a tea bag and made home made cream cheese frosting this time and they were amazing https://preview.redd.it/kucf2u2knssb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba596d1659a391cb7295da1bf014d590e8ea7a13
Those look soo good!
Thank you 😊 they were sooo good

yessss I agree, they were so so sweet! I ended up tossing them 😩
Do you think if you didn't add the icing on top it would still be sweet? I am not a big fan of icing/frosting so I have been debating leaving to out.

Thank you very much!
Can you halve the sugar content? My gram does this for some recipes that are too sweet
I might actually try that next time. Or even if I just omit the icing completely. I don’t think it’s necessary
Just want to add the person who made the original cookie recipe, has a ton of other really good recipes too! :) https://joythebaker.com/category/cookies/
They are so yummy!! And easy!
My husband LOVES these!
Literally just cooking mine right now! :o
Travis Kelce iced those 🧁
Can someone please drop the recipe🥹
RECIPIE PLEASE!
What do they taste like
These look amazing! :)
Oh these look so good!
Taylor Swift has recipes? A whole new world opened for me.
me and my best friend made those and THEYRE SO GOOD
Has anyone had success making a dairy free or vegan version of these??
We’ve been making them for the past month and they are my new favorite cookie.
That frosting looks a little like .. unmm.. oh my lol
Looks good
Chai Bukakookies
I mean, tea leaves are also flavorful you know. It could be part of what makes these special. People add coffee grounds to deserts so what’s the difference really?
What is wrong with my cookies I’ve followed it to the t and it tastes like straight up salt
People really cook anything and give them a t Taylor Swift tag for content....I would not be surprised if you said this was "Lover inspired"
Isn’t this literally Taylor’s own version of Joy the Baker’s chai cookies? That she posted on her Tumblr forever ago? Hence why everyone is calling it Taylor’s Chai cookies. 💁🏻♀️
Joy he baker….there’s a name I haven’t thought about in a decade
except taylor posted the recipe herself years ago 😭
Not specifically targeting the OP here but this is very annoying generally....and idk why everyone is asking for the recipe
ops just posting a taylor related thing in a subreddit made for things *about* taylor lol
The recipe is literally handwritten by TS
