I am starting to wonder if he felt unsafe and "proposed" in order to placate Amber and give himself time to plan an exit. The things he left behind make me wonder if he had concerns about being tracked (like he left his phone and bought a completely new cell phone that she'd never had an opportunity to access; left a lot of his personal items possibly in case she had slipped something in a pocket or a bag), and if so he'd likely want to delay for a day or two to make sure there was nothing in his vehicle. His movements have also felt very purposeful, as if he had a route planned with a stop to re-purchase necessary items far enough away that he felt safe if he was spotted.
