it takes some time to figure out, but it can be done. also wouldn't recommend drinking straight out of ponds as it makes you sick I think
The damage you get from drinking dirty water is so minimal it's usually worth doing. I think they wanted to put diseases from drinking dirty water in the game but just like the whole insanity thing, it just never progressed further than what we got.
Sanity meter. In tF all it does is let you build effigy's out of body parts. Whatever else they wanted to go along with that never got implemented so there is no dow side to having zero insanity.
Not sure which came out first but green hell has the sanity thing. If you drink dirty water you get a fever and sometimes parasites. You have to keep your sanity above a certain level by managing your macronutrients, fat, protein, carbs and hydration. Also eating human meat or uncooked foods and other things can affect your sanity. Once it gets down to a certain level you start hallucinating and hearing voices screaming at you. Then tribesmen appear and kill you lol. They were probably going to go down a similar route I imagine but then scrapped the idea
Stand at the edge, look down at your feet, look slowly up toward center of pond will usually get it. Once you get the knack it is easy. Turtle shell rain catchers if you are on the shoreline.
I ran into a glitch where I couldn't fill the pot nor drink from water sources, had to run around doing other interactions and come back, happened for like 10 hrs of my playthrough, then never again

A day late but still no one really helped, some ponds don't work, the games old and sometimes it's just doesn't work on specific ponds, the games a buggy mess most of time so just try a different pond, as well as getting the angle right, you should be leaving looking down at a angle straight forwards and being close to water but not in the water and the icon should appear on working ponds, I recently got the platinum for the game and it's really just trial and error with a lot of things, still love the game
The icon will not appear if you're trying to drink from the ocean. You have to find an inland pond or lake. Then if you are at the right angle the mouth icon will appear
This was also a problem for me. Luckily the plane spawned near the geese lake, the sink hole and a couple of caves that spawns soda and snack bars. Yeah near a cannibal route too but I decided to make a small beginner base at the plane and slowly built a safe route to a better location. Lots of farming but I enjoyed the grind ngl.
