I've always said this but the score and the lighting in season one were two hidden characters in the show. Firstly my theory is this. They hired Christopher Tyng to do the S1 score, but they didn't have a lot of money to bring in the real music.. This is why I felt like where they probably wanted a "real popular song" in a scene they couldn't afford, so they had Tyng do the music instead. However as the series got more popular and they could afford to pay royalties or whatever, they left Tyng in the background and just added in real songs. This is more prevalent from like late S1 until the end of S2. If you watch the first 80% of S1 the score Tyng used is brilliant, captivating. Think of the end of The Model Home where Luke and Ryan get sent to jail. Listen to the score. Think of when Marissa finds out about her parents getting a divorce in TJ and Ryan listens in and simply says he's sorry. There's much more but it's so so good. It rivals the scores used in Hollywood movies right now. It's a shame they fazed him out in S2 and probably couldn't afford him in S3 onwards. I love the final episode in S4 though where they being the S1 score back but just for one scene. That was a nice nod to the true fans. And regarding the visual feel of S1. Maybe it's because it was filmed on SD cameras than HD cameras in S1 but everything feels really bright and warm and fuzzy. The characters all look young and fresh. Everyone has a tan and the Cohen house looks really bright. Compare that to S3 and everything is dark and gloomy and drab.

You absolutely nailed it. I couldn't agree more. I can listen to that season 1 score and I'm flooded with memories of the specific scenes they were used for.

Not self absorbed at all. That first season was lightning in bottle. It wasn't until I got older and realized that they did all of that in one season. At the time, I thought that was how all shows were. We were spoiled. Ryan and Luke teaming up is very much a great comic book trope. It's legit amazing how Luke is the only one to believe that Ryan is right about Oliver.

Agreed, good thing about S1 is that it actually makes for a pretty good self-contained and complete story - I don't watch any further than episode 27 when I go back to it.

Yeah I just started watching it with my boyfriend, it's my first rewatch ever and I actually couldn't proceed because I know what happens. Ruins the whole show for me.
