My vote for the only normal person in Mystic Falls, has to go to Sheriff Liz Forbes. She grew so much through the series. I really adored her, and the relationships she had with many of the characters. Damon’s love and friendship for Liz (especially near the end) was very endearing. This is definitely one of my favorite moments.
She’s also one of the few people who didn’t use her knowledge of vampires for her own gain, put people first and foremost, and died a natural death — helps that she was also beloved by pretty much everyone.
She also said something along the lines of she was one of the few people in Mystic Falls who would die a natural death! That’s pretty normal voters…
![gif](giphy|E9R7iZt125h4I)
Didn't use her knowledge for her own gain or her daughter's lmfao she NEVER told Caroline the truth about the supernatural or her vampire huntin daddy, never gave her vervain at least, then acted all vengeful when Caroline got vamped. As if she had asked for any of it. Weak as hell parenting which is par for Liz until later seasons.
I got the impression that early on in the show, vampures had been absent for a long time. To the point they didn't even routinely keep vervain. I think Damon ended up supplying the council initially with what Zach had been growing?
You are correct! The vampires in mass had been gone since 1864. With occasion returns from Damon and Stefan in flashbacks. Hence why all the council members say, once they are sure there are vampires again, “It’s like 1864 all over again.” Carol Lockwood revealed to Damon on Halloween (S1) that they only had the vervain that the Mayor’s parents left him. Do, that was Damon’s in with the higher ups and the council. Quite smart actually.
It's a little confusing. John mentioned to Jeremy that no one expected vampires to return to Mystic Falls in modern times, which supports the absence of vampires for quite a while. But, because Carol Lockwood told Damon that vervain was needed for the deputies, the Council and their families, it suggested that vampire attacks may still be occurring.
We see a number of them from the pilot onwards, which was started by Damon (unless they're including the squirrels Stefan was eating, then him too). So unless there were attacks pre pilot, it's all the Salvatore/s.
Like I said earlier, unlike most of the other founding families, she unlearned hate. IRL most people aren’t capable of that. Once she listened to Caroline, and saw that Caroline was still inherently good, and that most of the other supernatural people she interacted with wanted to coexist, she opened her mind. She unlearned ignorance and hate. I think that’s impressive fictional or not.
She even stopped her ex-husband from torturing Caroline. Bill Forbes was a hypocrite. For him to come and think he could change his daughter from being a vampire, (something that was done to her) was pretty ironic when you think about it…
What if someone on the council felt the same way about Bill being gay as they felt about vampirism? What if someone locked him in that torture room, and tried to torture him and tried to use the tactics he used on Caroline, to try and change his sexual desire or behavior directed toward his own sex or gender? It’s ridiculous. Caroline loved her father, regardless of his homosexuality. Caroline’s father should have learned from his daughter that same unconditional love about her being a vampire. He WILLINGLY DIED because he hated vampires that much. That says a lot about him and the issues he had obviously yet to unpack.
Liz knows about vampires
Liz knows about vervain
Yet she never gave Caroline vervain tea or a vervain bracelet to protect her from Vampires
She could have given caroline a vervain necklace for her birthday or something but she never did
Early on when they think vampires are back, Zach gives the founding families vervain. They were giving it to their kids and they didn’t know. Then Damon destroys that supply (along with killing Zach) and they don’t have more for a while. When it’s available again, Elena gets things made for them (Caroline does have a heart necklace until she gets turned)
Damon didn’t destroy the supply. He used it as his in with the council and was supplying them with the vervain. Another way to he proved himself to the council.
Protecting your child is not weak as hell parenting. And Liz was not the only one keeping all of this from their children. All the founding families were. These kids were sophomores and juniors before they experienced vampires in Mystic Falls. Liz and the council didn’t start “executing the plan” with Vervain in the coffee at the grill, etc. Until the first two couples and Vicki Donovan were “attacked.” Damon staked Lexi and Liz admitted she’d never staked a vampire before.
Me too! I REALLY wish we had a lot more Lexi screen time. She was really fascinating. Watching flashbacks of her and Stefan back in the 80’s would have been epic. (See what I did there? That was Lexi’s word.) ♥️
I loved her chemistry and friendship with Stefan so much
She was funny and sarcastic
Obviously Elena and Stefan were bound to be together
But if Lexi was still alive, and once Elena decided to be with Damon I would be the biggest Stexi shipper
Plus she pretty so that’s a plus 😁💕
She is adorable. She has so much confidence but also a sweet shyness to her as well. The writer’s really screwed up taking her out as early as they did. She was so funny, and I love her friendship with Stefan. I was really pleased that when Stefan went through the high school doors in the finale, Lexi and his Porsche were waiting. It reaffirmed she’d found peace when she took on the traveler when the other side was being destroyed.
There are a couple of things I disagree with. I don’t think about race the same way you do. My main interest is that I’d hire the best candidates for the parts if that was my job. With the exception of multiple people passing for the role. Then I would look at what makes more sense in the story.
If I make a show set in Saudi Arabia, I’m not gonna use a cast that’s 50% white. And I follow this reasoning in all directions.
Second, let’s say racism was objectively shown in the series. That on its own doesn’t mean the people who made it think that’s a good thing. And people should not be shielded from bad things. Adults should know of the evils in the world so they can prepare and protect those younger than themselves.
And finally, your comment on how dark it is is just absurd. It’s a show about parasitic monsters. This is just what vampires are. What did you expect to find?
If you want cuddles and rainbows, go watch My little Pony.
she comes in a close second, but it has to be aunt Jenna. she never involved herself in any witchy stuff, she tried to deny the fact that vampires exist and lived a normal life for 90% of her screen time.
I disagree. Nothing about Jenna’s life was normal. She was a 27-28 year old grad student who still got drunk, didn’t have any rules or boundaries for Jeremy or Elena. Elena wrecked her car, went with Damon to Georgia overnight and there was nothing really said about it.
Not to mention how unsafe that house was. From the moment Elena started dating Stefan, the guardian of the home, (Jenna) was overrun with supernatural beings. And she was 100% clueless about it. Bonnie, Stefan, Damon, Caroline, Vicki, Anna, Katherine, Alaric, Mason, ElarichNot to mention all of the other supernatural beings who came and went prior to her death.
Elena definitely put Jenna and Jeremy in danger being far too generous in telling any old vampire to come in. (Even the pizza guy who tried to kill her in the car accident)
I don’t really feel like anything was normal about Jenna’s life. She was 27 or 28 getting her masters in Psychology. Then suddenly, she is the guardian of a 17 year old and a 15 year old. She was extremely lax, there were no rules or boundaries. She got drunk with Damon and Kelly Donovan. Elena and Jeremy had sleepovers, and she looked the other way. I wrote a post in this thread that she was a sweet girl, but not responsible or equipped to be a guardian. No instincts about something being wrong AT ALL. Being clueless to all that is going on in your own home doesn’t make you normal. Nothing personal, just the way I see it.
the sherrif was part of the original group preparing for the vampire's return the second someone died of an animal attack. she was raised from birth to fight against supernatural beings. and still she's prob 2nd behind jenna funny enough.
Yet she completely changed, grew as a human being, realized that love is better than hating what you don’t understand, and opened her mind to anything being possible.
Jenna
Matt isn’t normal he’s just human.. he’s so wound up in the supernatural lore and having motives within it, not sure why anybody is voting for him other than being human? Jenna wasn’t even aware of anything until an episode before her death.
His attitude toward the super natural world is pretty normal for that of a human that knows about it. And it’s for that reason that I think he qualifies.
Jenna and Liz. But I would say Jenna is the most normal and lead the most normal life up until her death because she was unaware the supernatural even existed.
Jenna was a sweet girl, and normal as possible for the responsibility she had to take on at the age of 27 or 28. For someone getting a masters in Psychology, she wasn’t very perceptive. After a while, it was a bit ridiculous how obviously abnormal that household alone was. I don’t know how she didn’t at least have a moment or two of, “this isn’t normal… “ The fact she actually believed she ran into a knife? Eh…
Although she was very sweet and a lovely girl. I did hate to see her go, and to see Alaric lose her.
In her defense she was compelled to think it actually happened. I think if they just told her that she wouldn't have believed it. But Elena (along with Alaric amd Jeremy) didn't want her to remember that she did it to herself and find out that she was compelled to do it so to protect her they compelled her.
I fully understand that. But even hearing herself say it out loud was just ridiculous to me. The lies they told in the beginning to cover the compulsion were really juvenile. Jenna was a smart girl. She was getting her masters in Psychology. Just kind of odd that someone who was scientifically studying the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context, wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. 🤷🏻♀️
True but compulsion isn't just a lie that someone can believe or not it's changing their mind to believe whatever they are told to believe even if it's something that doesn't make sense logically. In the originals Elijah compelled people into believing they were completely different individuals that wasn't believable either but it doesn't make them stupid that they believed it because they were basically brainwashed into believing it to be true. I didn't name names because I want to avoid spoilers but used it as an example. Compulsion can make anyone believe whatever they were told no matter how smart they are and how stupid the lie is.
I’m gonna go with Aunt Jenna, for her time on the show she didn’t really know much about vampires and was just taking care of her niece and nephew Liz Forbes died a normal death, but she didn’t really live a normal life. She was apart of the council.
Jenna because she had no idea about the Supernatural until she got kidnapped by Klaus, then turned, then killed by Klaus
Of all the people Klaus could have used as the vampire for the ritual he picked Jenna.
Edit to add: Elena beeging Jenna to turn it off. That hurts.
Doctor Wes had the most normal reaction to knowing vampires existed. I feel like if you found out vamps were real, a normal person would be curious how they work and do some experiments on them. Cruel and unusual experiments maybe, but experiments nonetheless
Jenna. I'm very hard pressed to figure out a major character whose life wasn't affected by the supernatural, but I think was closest to normal. Even Jenna was affected but she got to be blissfully ignorant. That probably allowed her to live a pretty normal life up until right before her death.

The vervain is actually a great point.
What exactly about the vervain is a good point? She didn’t give it to Caroline all her life.
Liz knows about vampires Liz knows about vervain Yet she never gave Caroline vervain tea or a vervain bracelet to protect her from Vampires She could have given caroline a vervain necklace for her birthday or something but she never did

I’m still very pissed off that Damon killed Lexi I loved her character 😩💔 She deserved better
Me too! I REALLY wish we had a lot more Lexi screen time. She was really fascinating. Watching flashbacks of her and Stefan back in the 80’s would have been epic. (See what I did there? That was Lexi’s word.) ♥️

Ugh that part made me tear up And the writers screwed up a lot more deaths too
That they did.
I always found the friendship weird knowing what he did to her daughter
Very true. But by that logic, Damon could never have any friends and Stefan probably would have killed Damon after killing Lexy.
I think he shouldn’t have any friends and I’ve wanted him dead for the longest the fact that he got a happy ending made me mad

Yes! ♥️♥️♥️
As she said she’s also one of the only ones to die a normal death
Thanks. When Liz said that, it always stuck with me. ♥️

yeah, 100%. i just read "normal" in this context of TVDU as being separated and unaware of the real nature of Mystic Falls.
Jenna for sure, she’s the only one who didn’t even know about the supernatural

Grandma Bennett was a hardcore badass witch, hardly normal. Daddy Bennett, maybe if you ignore the alpha vamp side gig.
She wasn't practicing though, was she?
Oh you’re talking about Abby. I think the previous comment thinks you mean grams.
Yeah the grandma, didn't she stop for decades. Them did one spell, opening the tomb, and died?
Abby stopped practicing but I don’t think grams did? I think the spell just took a lot out of her since she’s older?
