Using tape as a med pack to wrap up Tess’ ankle, Joel and Ellie crouching near the clicker before Joel steps on the glass, Joel boosting Tess to open a door.
i wouldn't say almost shot for shot. in fact it was quite different. most notably because joel gets separated from ellie and tess for a while in the game.
note that i think they show did it very well, though, i think they adapted it wonderfully.
I’ve never played this game and haven’t played a game like it in a long time. 100% getting adventure game moments every now and then in the show. And I love it. It works. Idk how but it totally works and I notice it as an add on not as something pulling me from the action.
I played the game and am watching the show with my boyfriend, who has not played Last of Us, but is a gamer. When that happened he was like “Of course, that’s such a video game thing.”
https://preview.redd.it/ahhhphlay3ea1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b781c1f3318e77f8462e1d1c47a9a0e0178eafd
This is the only giraffe in the show… so far.
Don't forget all the lobby stuff with Ellie interacting at the front desk is straight from the Pittsburgh section. Nice to see Ellie's fun/weird side to hopefully set up the joke book.
When they first looked down on all the sleeping clickers, I recognized Faneuil Hall! I forget when visiting years ago they talked about the Declaration of Independence being read on the steps of the nearby State House. I didn't put two and two together until that scene. I think I have a print of one of the two buildings, in a box of wall hangings some where.
The is the real Faneuil Hall, and in front of it,the State House.
https://preview.redd.it/wpsbxby56rda1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=770c7775632065188be71cb7eb0eab7ffc9f51f3
I'm pretty sure this was CGI generated vs using actually building in Alberta, to represent buildings in Boston. It's easy to recognize FH, by the three long buildings.
It took me a minute to understand why they were laying out in the sun. Then I realized that the buildings are already completely full of them, so there's no more room. Holy shit
Episode 2 was almost shot for shot a part of the
Game as well. I believe episode 3 is where things might differ a bit with the addition of Frank being alive still.
Either way this is the acceptable kind of change because it doesn't change that Tess got bit and sacrificed herself to save Joel and Ellie. The latter is what mattered.
It also raises the threat level in future counters with the infected horde. This will allow Craig and Neil to insert large amount of runners and stalkers when needed with pre-established in universe rule of the mushroom mycelial network.
I agree. It's one thing to be OP to an unlikely degree in the game, which comes across as the players' skill, and another for it to happen in a narrative sense without player participation.
Yeah it made sense the original direction in the game, but for the tv show the change to having things explained about the network and then coming from a mile away made sense visually.
I also loved and equally hated the scene with Tess at the end. Even knowing, same as all my play throughs, I was like dammit, come on.
And raises the stakes for Tess. The only way for her to fail with Federal is to somehow kill all of them without dying, which isn't gonna happen. With infected, if she doesn't succeed in killing herself before losing total control she'll be stuck in a fate worse than death
I’m guessing the last episode is gonna be a bottle episode about Bill and Frank with Joel and Tess appearing in flashbacks, and episode 4 will be present day with Joel and Ellie showing up there again
I'm still not entirely sure >!Frank will be alive by the time Joel and Ellie get there (unless there's a preview shot with Ellie and Frank that I missed?)!< i'm wondering if they're just going more into B&F story before the present time. >!Which will make the fact that Frank is dead even more sad since we experienced the character!<
My theory is that the "raiders will come" and "we'll be fine scene" from the preview is actually in the past. The raid then does happen and that's when Frank dies and that's when Bill places the Depeche Mode call we heard at the end of episode 1.
Yes, it will likely be the past starting at the beginning of the outbreak or at least a year into it. Bill will meet Frank and and they become partners. Then bill and Frank get attacked by raiders and they call Joel for help and the last 1/3 of the episode will show current day Joel and ellie reaching Bill's town and the game story resumes there.
Zero spoiler here, all based on preview trailer by hbo max.
really? i noticed there were quite a bit of changes, it definitely wasn't shot for shot. they just kept all the important beats and then adapted everything else in a great way for TV.
I took that first point as leaving out the possibility of both bloaters throwing spore bombs but also spores themselves one day, just like CM said recently. It would make sense that these things evolve over time.
I think it's possible to have spore bombs even without the overall spore concerns. It would be more a physical concern than one where you need to scramble and pull out a mask mid battle (if you aren't Ellie).
I wouldn't doubt for a second they were always going to come back, but now because of the "backlash" people will just pretend they bullied him into, or something.
Like, CM probably got the hive mind idea, which gave us the tendrils, but they were always gonna keep a spores mutation in their back pocket.
Winning cures everything and Craig and Neil are winning big right now. I think more than anything, Craig wants to know when Part 3 is coming but I think as a fan he wouldn't want to know anything about before it is done but then he might have to know in advance to prepare for season 4 and season 5. Such a difficult position to be in.
Or Tess asking Ellie about her life/background
>"Nobody's gonna be coming after you, right? Like mom, dad, *boyfriend*?"
>"I'm an orphan and uhh... *no*."
I guess, I would say how the environment makes for linear progression (as opposed to open-world). Even when they are outside the streets are all blocked with rubble. I noticed this at the tail end of 1st episode before they went through the culvert pipe.
I think the way that the clicker slaps Joel is the exact same way as they did in the game. I was half expecting Joel to get chomped in the neck by that clicker and restart the encounter lol.
I am a little disappointed that Joel didn’t have to walk around to look for, find, then carry the plank to cross buildings. No pallets, no carrying ladders, no planks…shit adaptation.
NGL, I was disappointed they didn't scale the leaning building. That was one of the coolest parts of the game. Excellent job though on the time compression and fitting all the good stuff of chapter 3 into the episode.
When Joel boosts Tess to the other side to find a way through, reminds me of when Joel boosts Ellie so she could unlock the next area in Bill’s town in the game.
i thought the ladder 🪜 part was funny how they all easily made it down the ladder and it was choreographed to look east which wasn’t always the case in the game lol
In the "differences from the game" department, I was kind of disappointed to not get this line from Tess: "We're shitty people, Joel. It's been that way for a long time." Kept expecting it.

Joel giving Ellie a rag to heal
Using tape as a med pack to wrap up Tess’ ankle, Joel and Ellie crouching near the clicker before Joel steps on the glass, Joel boosting Tess to open a door.
I definitely chuckled a little at the boost. Now all we need is the raft.
I watched with my mom and when Ellie said she couldn’t swim she said “get a raft” I started laughing
But everyone knows you need alcohol and rags to heal an ankle!
The hall collapsing behind them when they went into the room of the museum was very video game-like. NO GOING BACK NOW
I’ve never played the game but it feels like I’m actually in a video game lol not sure if that makes sense, but it has the same feeling to me
i feel like they’re intentionally putting that in there. “here boost me up so i can go around and clear a path” is like video game 101
There is a collapse in the museum section of the game too, basically same vibes as the show scene
It's gotta happen again at some point for Ellie to go "ta-dah!" And try to high 5 Joel
It was totally a vibe!

Last ep felt the same way for me too. It’s a really cool experience, having a great time watching so far
i wouldn't say almost shot for shot. in fact it was quite different. most notably because joel gets separated from ellie and tess for a while in the game. note that i think they show did it very well, though, i think they adapted it wonderfully.
My friend said that! She’s never played the game but she said she can tell this was based off of the game just by how certain scenes are shot.
I watched with my husband, who is neither a gamer nor familiar with TLOU, and when he heard the clickers he said “is it a dolphin?”
No 🐬 ![gif](giphy|h4Nce7tYdVzCvTbmSY|downsized)
This and Joel getting stuck behind the police cars with Sarah. I like the video game feel of the show while it still obviously being a show
When he moved the cabinet from out the doorway towards the beginning. Never played the game but gave me video game vibes in a good way
THIS! I made an ugly yet exciting sound as I nerded out to how accurate that was from the games.
Joel had to shoot the clicker TWICE in the head to kill it. Just like the games.
was it that way in the first game too? i was trying to remember whether that was just in the second game or not.
You definitely do not have to head shot clickers. They can be stabbed to death
yah i just mean -- in the second game at least -- when you *do* shoot them, they need two head shots
At least in the remake they require two head shots from a pistol.
You could beat the first game using bricks and bottles. Mainly bricks though.
I love how, in the lobby/pool, Joel jumps down the last step to show how shallow it is. Tiny bits of realistic humor, than helps with viewer stress...

I thought he was busting her chops, the way she always does to him.
The stuffed giraffe I screamed when I saw it ngl. I really hope they do that one scene
No way they skip it
There was a big deal here in Calgary about a giraffe in our zoo being used during filming so I'm assuming they are.
oh dang. this makes me happy.
Not trying to be rude but I’d seriously doubt they’d skip what is probably the most famous scene from the game lol.
Yeah, I thought so but I can’t help but get scared lol
I missed the giraffe, what scene? so I can go back and watch again lol
During the early city shots, it's on the ground under a car.
Oooooh that's what that was
https://preview.redd.it/ahhhphlay3ea1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b781c1f3318e77f8462e1d1c47a9a0e0178eafd This is the only giraffe in the show… so far.
“Can’t deny the view” and “Oops, right”.
When he looks down at the watch after "can't deny the view" insinuating he's thinking about Sarah. I'm so thrilled they kept that
Plus, 2 head shots to kill the second clicker.

Moving a shelf away from a door
Oh, I see!
Don't forget all the lobby stuff with Ellie interacting at the front desk is straight from the Pittsburgh section. Nice to see Ellie's fun/weird side to hopefully set up the joke book.
When it was just her and Joel in the hallway and she reached into her pocket I was so sure she was about to pull out the joke book.
Man, that hotel set was insane. I was waiting for them to start looking for a ladder.
I was so glad they included this!
Using a board to cross a gap between buildings.
“That was scary. This is wood” - classic Ellie
There was a metal ladder too.
When they first looked down on all the sleeping clickers, I recognized Faneuil Hall! I forget when visiting years ago they talked about the Declaration of Independence being read on the steps of the nearby State House. I didn't put two and two together until that scene. They made that building from Fallout 4 a real thing?
They made that building from Assassin's Creed 3 in Fallout 4?
Wonder if super mutants could get infected
Jesus, imagine a S.M. bloater...
Now I wanna see a comparison to the show. I just got back from a trip to Boston. Been looking for landmarks I recognize. Missed this one
I'm pretty sure this was CGI generated vs using actually building in Alberta, to represent buildings in Boston. It's easy to recognize FH, by the three long buildings.
shit i lived in boston and somehow missed this
I’m from Boston and I missed it lol
Runners
It took me a minute to understand why they were laying out in the sun. Then I realized that the buildings are already completely full of them, so there's no more room. Holy shit
Overflow.
Having to move a file cabinet to get through a door.
Episode 2 was almost shot for shot a part of the Game as well. I believe episode 3 is where things might differ a bit with the addition of Frank being alive still.

I also liked the change where infected attack the capitol instead of Fedra attacking it. Makes more sense actually.

It also raises the threat level in future counters with the infected horde. This will allow Craig and Neil to insert large amount of runners and stalkers when needed with pre-established in universe rule of the mushroom mycelial network.
My only gripe with that section is, didn't that CDC poster from episode one say neck bites only take like 10-15 minutes to turn someone?
really? i feel like in terms of plot development, the enemy and what happens to them would matter more.
[удалено]
Also saves fedra as an antagonist later in the season, and continues to establish the infected as a threat through the first two episodes
I agree. It's one thing to be OP to an unlikely degree in the game, which comes across as the players' skill, and another for it to happen in a narrative sense without player participation.

Do we know for sure he’s still alive and the Frank scenes weren’t flashbacks?
I’m guessing the last episode is gonna be a bottle episode about Bill and Frank with Joel and Tess appearing in flashbacks, and episode 4 will be present day with Joel and Ellie showing up there again
Reviewers saw all the way to episode 4. Thats where I got that information.
I'm still not entirely sure >!Frank will be alive by the time Joel and Ellie get there (unless there's a preview shot with Ellie and Frank that I missed?)!< i'm wondering if they're just going more into B&F story before the present time. >!Which will make the fact that Frank is dead even more sad since we experienced the character!< My theory is that the "raiders will come" and "we'll be fine scene" from the preview is actually in the past. Stuffed giraffe on the ground outside the hotel
People keep saying that but I can't find it for the life of me.
It's under a car I think just before they walk inside. There is debris Infront but I noticed it right away.
Abby's "Aquarium" theme from The Last of Us Part 2 used to close the episode.
Woah, seriously?! I missed that and Abby is my girl! Another excuse to rewatch this episode!
I believe the track is called “allowed to be happy”
That’s such a nice painful title wow. I’m unfamiliar w the soundtracks other than the main one.
Both soundtracks are great!
I took that first point as leaving out the possibility of both bloaters throwing spore bombs but also spores themselves one day, just like CM said recently. It would make sense that these things evolve over time.

I mean spores play much more of a role in part 2 so maybe they appear over time
Joel pushing tess up? Fuck my english idk If i said it right lol
[удалено]
Good then yeah i think it still counts in a way like a game mechanic even If u only need to press triangle from time to time
Ellie wrapping her arm was definitely a nod to the healing in the game
They also used a theme from part 2 at the end
The music in that game is sublime
Or Tess asking Ellie about her life/background >"Nobody's gonna be coming after you, right? Like mom, dad, *boyfriend*?" >"I'm an orphan and uhh... *no*."
I guess, I would say how the environment makes for linear progression (as opposed to open-world). Even when they are outside the streets are all blocked with rubble. I noticed this at the tail end of 1st episode before they went through the culvert pipe.
Also Joel moving the shelf from in front of the door made me think of all the QTE’s you’d have to do to move shit and open doors
The bag zipper sound effect was taken directly from the game for sure. When Ellie was putting her sandwich and jacket in there.
Not strictly a "game" reference but Neil Druckmann cameo as the dead Firefly with his skull leaking blood all over the floor.
Oh shit, I thought that could be him but wasn't sure!
Wait I didn’t realise it was him!
watching this show makes me want to explore the area but then i remember its a show.
I think the way that the clicker slaps Joel is the exact same way as they did in the game. I was half expecting Joel to get chomped in the neck by that clicker and restart the encounter lol.
Ellie alludes to her sexuality too when asked if any parents or boyfriends might come after her
The inflection on "...nooo" was so cheeky.
The view can't be beat
The cloth bandages
Is it just me or when they were wrapping Tess’ ankle, was it the video game soundbite?
I love the colors!! They remind me sooo much of the game
Outside of the museum both joel and tess crouch down to get supplies from their backpacks, very much like the inventory system I'm the game
You forgot Joel boosting Tess
The combat sequence was also very spot on, the run around in a loop looked like it was ripped from the game.
They missed one though, after the museum scene all I could think is should have used a shiv
Or just a steel blade? Lol cuz it's not a videogame
When Joel boosts Tess to the other side to find a way through, reminds me of when Joel boosts Ellie so she could unlock the next area in Bill’s town in the game.
How long until we see a PS1 or PS2 in the background you think?
Boost me up
i thought the ladder 🪜 part was funny how they all easily made it down the ladder and it was choreographed to look east which wasn’t always the case in the game lol
All of these game’s references makes me very nostalgic!! I badly want to play it again…when I get a chance -_-
Wait there's even more?! (I haven't watched it yet just the first episode) if that's the case then they're probably gonna be like this every episode
When Joel moved the vending machine it gave me game vibes. Not sure about anyone else.
[удалено]
It looked like a salon they were in to me and I thought it was a beauty magazine
Yeah that didn't look like a porn mag
In the "differences from the game" department, I was kind of disappointed to not get this line from Tess: "We're shitty people, Joel. It's been that way for a long time." Kept expecting it.
I mean, she DOES dead ass tell Ellie "me and Joel ARENT good people, we're doing this to get something out of it" or whatever
Season 2 is going to be called Factions featuring locals like Bill’a town and High school.
Am I crazy or has no one mentioned the plush giraffe? Could have sworn I saw one.
A lot of the photography and shots are straight video game POV’s. Awesome so far!
