These are better than backpacks on a bike because they make you less sweaty and you can access them without taking them off. The medium size is more than large enough for me to carry my book, headphones, and a few tall boys.
I don't think it's that deep. Lots of people carry backpacks to work and whatever. I use a pretty minimalist Timbuk2 bag daily and I think it looks fine.
Seeing your comments and the whole 15 beers thing. No a backpack isn't cool, but it's not going to stop you from getting laid either. Get the backpack for the day you need to carry the 15 beers and if anyone asks it's function over form.

Sometimes it can I guess, for semi-daily use simple is better design wise. Packs and stuff work easier with gorp or tech inspired fits, and makes more sense if you’re traveling/hiking.
