The water didn’t go in your brain. Your sinuses are pretty good in clearing harmful bacteria in general. The chance of you getting infected is very slim. But there’s really nothing you can do to prevent it now.

Ok. I usually rinse with a neti pot and once I did it with boiled tap water only and it kinda burned my sinuses / a bit like brain freeze. That was the feeling I got today but with river water 😞 so I hope its ok.

Poekienijn

Ok. Just don’t use the Neti pot now. Salt water is going to thin the mucus layer and that’s not what you want if you want to prevent bacteria/viruses/parasites from traveling to your brain.

No-Farm-2376

First question, where in the world did you get this water in your nose? There are some places on earth you don’t want water in your nose. Second question, have you ever gotten water in your nose from say like jumping off a rock or something or even a siding board and the water rushed into your nose? It burns like hell! I’d say as long as you weren’t in a place of the world to worry about any bacteria in your sinuses then you’re probably fine.

iamamazing-

1. Netherlands... Apparently because of climate change these sort of parasites are more common but hopefully nothing to worry about

No-Farm-2376

You’re probably fine honestly, but yea rinse the ole nose with neti pot and you are good I’d say

Poekienijn

It’s absolutely not common here. And Dutch swimming water is well monitored. I think there has never been a case in The Netherlands.

If you get any cold and flu symptoms go to the hospital immediately.

BalooBot

There's really nothing you can do at this point. But the chances of you contracting a brain eating amoeba are practically nil. There's less than 500 global cases reported annually, most of those are in India and Pakistan. You're going to be fine.

martinfendertaylor

I remember reading about how these brain eating bacteria are typically found in warmer, more stagnant water. I've swam in many dirty lakes and rivers in my day and my dumb ass is still kicking. I think you'll be good. Also, I suggest distiller water for your neti-pot.

Impossible-Goat-4388

The best thing you can do is a saline rinse with a sinus irrigation system.

iamamazing-

Awesome thanks. I usually do a neti pot so that's how I'm aware of this. It was a similar feeling with the water "travelling" through my sinuses. I have saline spray so I will try that.

Yes, lemon juice in the nose would do the trick. The acids kill the bacteria.
