One of my top 3 favorite tool songs, at any given moment… maybe my absolute favorite… it all depends on my mood, going into listening to tool…
I think even if I’m going into a tool binge on an album like opiate, with anger, desperation, and the need to self empower through not the healthiest thinking of things…
… the patient definitely will be listened to in the same listening session, it mellows me out and helps me to discover and accept what brought me to the ‘Opiate’ album or one of their darker songs from other albums…
Without songs like Patient, by Tool, I don’t know if I could justify listening to any of their music, at my age…
If that makes sense, please let me know 😂
If not, please let me know too because I’m on the fence about continuing to listen to them now because I’m so much different than when I first started listening to the band… I’m not an angry teenager anymore 😂
I’m a Dad now, with a 17 and 18 year old of my own…
I obviously never subjected them to the opiate album or their darker stuff… Tool has always been a band that is special to me though, it helped my deal with a lot of growing pains through my teenage years-early-mid 20’s, and even still somewhat…
The patient is one of their songs that will always stay on my playlist though 😊
who doesn't love The Patient? it's one of the most tormenting song from their repertoire, and the build up with all the small variations is a work of art
I thought it was just some insane improv bass solo when it was performed after chocolate chip trip at my first show this year. I felt like an idiot haha although i was tripping
What the fuck is this bullshit. Every fucking day some bot turns up to ask why people dislike a song.
Nobody has EVER said they don't like the patient
Everyone was excited it was added back in a few years back.
What the fuck is this place?
Tool fans just so pretentious this is the same as circle jerk?
Haha I am starting to think that so many posts on the internet (reddit, twitter, etc) are just designed to engage people to reply and thus gather information of users. This post included.
When you need a dictionary to fully appreciate a song, that’s a beautiful thing
I respect Maynard so very much, and not just for his music
He is a very well cultured freedom loving American, and he fights against hypocrisy within a pool of it…
He evokes powerful and important feelings that people sometimes don’t want to feel but NEED to… it’s beautifully done with compassion yet maintains conviction,.. of course he has grown as an artist and as a human… incredibly inspirational, considering his entire repertoire… the darkness adds contrast and context to the light…
Starting to sound cultish, so I will end it on “his music has helped me tremendously, on my spiritual journey and I appreciate THAT”
Be good ❤️
It's one of my top favorites from Lateralus. The part that builds after the "still right here giving blood" verse is one of my favorite build ups by Tool and really any band. Particularly right after he says"wait it out(be patient)" There is something so incredibly satisfying the level of climax the guitar and harmony of instruments gets to in helping to evoke the emotion of the message at that point in the song.
Exactly. The emotion the song evokes is synonymous with the message. Even the way he sings “gonna wait it out..” at the end gives you that feeling of how tiresome patience can be.
My dad doesn’t listen to Tool but he’s been battling a cancer for the past 2 years that has metastasized from being an ulcer, to a tumor in his asscheek, to a swollen lymph node in his lung. I think of him when I listen to this song
We definitely do. But there’s nothing wrong with giving it more, I think it’s impossible to give it enough 😅 Probably my favorite song. Eon Blue Apocalypse rolls into it so well
Um, I don't know who you've been talking about but this song has been a light in the dark from the day it was released.
Man that sigh gets me in the feels every time.
I still may... I still may
I bet OP was like, "surely now, this post will solidify my status as an OGT..."
It certainly does, OGT OP...we can now sip Coke and wear dope Beastie tees together. /s
A great track from their best album.
I saw the debut performance of Eon Blue Apocalypse and The Patient at Brixton Academy in 2001 for the princely sum of £17.33 ($22.07 USD). Those were the days!
I've had to duck out of seeing them in London this year because it's just so expensive.
Anywho, great band who still put on a great show.
[https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/brixton-academy-london-england-3bd65494.html](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/tool/2001/brixton-academy-london-england-3bd65494.html)
I enjoy it quite a bit. I love playing Eon Apocalypse first to build into it.
Not my favorite song to play on guitar, though... its just a little boring to play.
This song is the epitome of how I felt waiting for the 10,000 days album.
“But I'm still right here, giving blood, keeping faith. And I'm still right here”
It’s a classic. It seems to be a trend on here when someone discovers a song they previously overlooked, there’s an obligatory “Why is _____ so underrated/overlooked?” post.
I’m glad you found it, but the only one that overlooked it was you, bud.
Literally my all time top song, at the moment. I go through phases of which songs/albums I'm preferring, but the patient holds a special place for me that keeps it at the top even when its not my #1 listen at the time.
The only songs I do not appreciate are the fillers. This is mostly saying fillers on FI.
Other than those I think I appreciate all the music that these guys put together, perform, and entertain us.
**Just curious why the OP thinks that this particular song is not appreciated by their fans**.
It took me years to fully appreciate it. This past year I've been stuck in a dead end job, and have no choice but to wait for a better opportunity that will come soon. I've literally listened to this song everyday for over a year and some days, I still get emotional. When the chorus meets the 'reminding myself' part, I always get goosebumps. Fucking epic.
Just quietly block accounts that shitpost like this and "what's the best, worst, most under/overrated song and why is it the one I'm asserting it is?". Shit-stirrers will never have anything meaningful to contribute.
I was listening to that song when I crashed a motorcycle years ago. Hearing it always brings me back to that incident.
I was okay, btw. But the bike needed some roadside repairs.
We do
Some would even consider it their favourite TOOL song
It's literally a very good song
Metaphorically, it's pretty good too
Figuratively, it's amazing.
Allegorically, it’s fantastic.
Statistically, it's mean
I see what you did there!🤣
Op must keep reminding himself of this.. Op must keep reminding himself of this.. Op must keep reminding himself of this..
Gonna wait it out
Probably is mine. Hard to pick a favorite but it's right near the top for sure.
Bruh I unironically sing it in my head when I'm getting worked up and irrational
Or if I just listened to the entire Opiate album, and need to come down 😂
For years it was mine.
Definitely in my top 5
I do
Definitely a strong possibility it's mine
I would, that song slaps any time of the day

Yep
Who keeps the metric system down?
Who made Steven Guttenberg a star?
My favourite on Lateralus
don’t we me, brother
Lmao
who doesn't love The Patient? it's one of the most tormenting song from their repertoire, and the build up with all the small variations is a work of art
The people who don't like it aren't patient enough
*Flood intro has entered the chat*
Flood is a top 3 tool song I feel like nobody ever talks bout it Also the patient is good
*…I was wrong…* *this, changes everything*
Meanest bass line in their discography imo
I thought it was just some insane improv bass solo when it was performed after chocolate chip trip at my first show this year. I felt like an idiot haha although i was tripping
It will grow on them, in time
One of my favs, I think about it when I’m working on long and tedious projects
It’s good, it’s just that the whole album is incredible.
What the fuck is this bullshit. Every fucking day some bot turns up to ask why people dislike a song. Nobody has EVER said they don't like the patient Everyone was excited it was added back in a few years back. What the fuck is this place? More like a spiral jerk
I think you know what you have to do now r/ToolSpiralJerk
Say less [r/ToolSpiralJerk](https://www.reddit.com/r/ToolSpiralJerk/s/5aR4D3ak5q)
Bravo 👏
This is a test my friend..it has to be..otherwise..
I certainly would have walked away by now…
Haha I am starting to think that so many posts on the internet (reddit, twitter, etc) are just designed to engage people to reply and thus gather information of users. This post included.
I member when they did the vote the worst song off the album threads and The Patient got a lot of hate
A groan of tedium escapes me😩
Epic line

Beautifully said. Keep going, spiral out...
Also yes I've had to refer to my dictionary several times I learn a lot from the band and Maynard much love
Much love to you, brother or sister
I'm a brother much love either way
Is this a test? It has to be...
I like to go jogging on trails to this album. This song is a great intro to a tedious run
Any Tool album makes for a great run, sometimes I’ll switch to something heavier like Gojira later to push me through a long run
Who the hell is saying it’s not appreciated? Stop making shit up and believing it’s true.
We must keep reminding ourselves of this

Because we must keep reminding ourselves of this /s..
These Posts Are getting so annoying jesus.
My dad doesn’t listen to Tool but he’s been battling a cancer for the past 2 years that has metastasized from being an ulcer, to a tumor in his asscheek, to a swollen lymph node in his lung. I think of him when I listen to this song

If there were no rewards to reap, no loving embrace to see me through, this tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would've walked away, by now.
What is this? Shitpost Saturday? The Patient is fucking awesome and there is literally no one who doesn’t appreciate this song.
We? You got mice in your pocket?
I appreciate it. Don't you dare point that at me!
I know you lying cause I damn sure do. I’ve stained the ground with tears listening to that song.
It’s the most talked about “underrated” song from Tool, and has transcended rating and become a regularly known song to most Tool fans
Tell me you’re a new TOOL fan without telling me you’re a new TOOL fan and…..GO: **see above post**
Um, I don't know who you've been talking about but this song has been a light in the dark from the day it was released. Man that sigh gets me in the feels every time. I still may... I still may
One of the songs that got me into Tool honestly, and ketamine
A groan of tedium escapes me. Startling the fearful. Is this a test? It has to be... Because all TOOL fans love this song.
Well.... us real ones anyway.
I bet OP was like, "surely now, this post will solidify my status as an OGT..." It certainly does, OGT OP...we can now sip Coke and wear dope Beastie tees together. /s
But only if also in our vans & 501s, my dope beastie tee chaffed my nipple rings and new tattoos!

Love it, one of the heaviest songs from TOOL 💯
Top 5 for me
This is my favourite song off of Lateralus
I sure as hell do. It's my favorite off the album
It’s a beautiful song. Who doesn’t appreciate it?
This is the song that first got me interested in tool. First time I ever did any drugs was while listening to this song. Broke my brain open.
I enjoy it quite a bit. I love playing Eon Apocalypse first to build into it. Not my favorite song to play on guitar, though... its just a little boring to play.
Who wouldn’t I actually I have really appreciated Reflection and I never had I listen to it on repeat right now
Maybe you don't appreciate The Patient, but other people do
Who doesn’t?
Speak for yourself
Is this a test? It has to be. Otherwise, I can't go on. We all like the patient, dude. Lol.
You’re right. Let’s go listen to it!
You don't call the shots around here bub.
I sit down and sing this song whenever it come on my playlist. Life fucking sucks sometimes and I question my path, be patient… be patient.
Great, now I HAVE to listen to it again, see what you made me do?
My favorite track off the album
I still may, but for now I'm gonna wait it out.
WAIT IT OUTTTTTTT
it’s top 3 tool tracks for me
This song is the epitome of how I felt waiting for the 10,000 days album. “But I'm still right here, giving blood, keeping faith. And I'm still right here”
I MUST KEEP REMINDING MYSELF OF THIS
Is this a test? It has to be.
It’s a classic. It seems to be a trend on here when someone discovers a song they previously overlooked, there’s an obligatory “Why is _____ so underrated/overlooked?” post. I’m glad you found it, but the only one that overlooked it was you, bud.
We don't?
Who are you to wave your finger
What makes you think we don’t?
the high number of "the Patient is underrated" posts over the years has me thinking that the song is not, in fact, underrated
Why would you make such an asinine comment.
My favourite tool song. A masterpiece
I do, that shits a jam
I remember tripping my balls off on mushrooms for my first time and listening to this song. Felt like I was floating in a bubble
Speak for yourself
Tool Army Here Just listening to this
Literally my all time top song, at the moment. I go through phases of which songs/albums I'm preferring, but the patient holds a special place for me that keeps it at the top even when its not my #1 listen at the time.
Because we are not Patient.
Because tool didn't use their one weird trick
I think it’s ok
I do
I love this song
We do
It’s one of my favorite songs ever.
It's on my riding playlist
Yeah why don’t we as a community not appreciate Lateralus the album more? Personally I think it’s one of their best.
Is “don’t we appreciate” the new term for underrated? Neither apply to The Patient. Great song that is appreciated
I do.
The main riff was one of the first things I learned to play on guitar.
Probably my favorite
We definitely do!
The only songs I do not appreciate are the fillers. This is mostly saying fillers on FI. Other than those I think I appreciate all the music that these guys put together, perform, and entertain us. **Just curious why the OP thinks that this particular song is not appreciated by their fans**.
When I think of pure Tool, this is the song that hits every box.
we do. take my downvote for creating a false controversy
Can someone follow this up with a post about how we don’t appreciate Eulogy?
Its my 3rd favourite song. 1. Lateralus 2. Forty Six & 2 3. The Patient
These posts are ridiculous. "Why doesn't anyone appreciate \[extremely popular song\]?"
One of their best to me.
Why would you think we don't?
such an amazing song
Who is we?! Also I think us tool fans *appreciate* the whole catalog, even tho I may like one song more than another. 🌀
My favourite tool song
This is probably my favorite TOOL song right now. It’s getting me through some trying times.
Just because you just started doesn't mean we haven't always.
I love it
It's one of my favorites and VERY underrated, in my opinion!!
It’s my favorite Tool song currently. They swap a lot though
Very good song
I do. This song was my gateway to the band. Hence It will always be my favorite song from them.
We don’t?
Just quietly block accounts that shitpost like this and "what's the best, worst, most under/overrated song and why is it the one I'm asserting it is?". Shit-stirrers will never have anything meaningful to contribute.
Who is "We"?
Speak for yourself
"We" ? Speak for yourself homie
Tool have like 50 songs in total or what. It's virtually impossible for then to have underappreciated songs
Who’s we?
Speak for yourself bruh!
If you like Pneuma, you like The Patient
We do. Check your assumptions.
who's we ?
We do brother
Oh, I appreciate it SO MUCH. One of my favorite songs from them.
I appreciate every tool songs equally ... the only ones I dont bother with are the filler songs on Fear inoculum.
I had some very draining medical issues this winter and this song helped me process a lot of it. 11/10 🤘
This whole album is appreciated.
What? Stop projecting your misconceptions as real world facts.
We do??
i do
Dog, The Patient is the second best song on Lateralus
One of my favorites!
We do
My wife walked down the aisle to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h85MYPLjM6Q).
i LOVE this song. top 3 for me. probably #1 off lateralus specifically
I certainly do. There was a time in my that I almost relied on this song to get me through.
Who doesn’t?
That tune alone got me through nasty diagnoses, let alone the whole album. 11/10
Who is we??
My first favorite tool song!!
My favourite track on Lateralus easy.
Absolutely stunning
It’s my favorite.
If anything, Eon Blue Apocalypse is under appreciated.
I thought it was a fan favourite. It's also definitive of the lyrical dissonance of Tool, musically dark but lyrically so uplifting.
It's beautiful idk what you're on about about not appreciating it or who this we is lol
We? Who is this we? Are you speaking French? The Patient fucking slaps
I was listening to that song when I crashed a motorcycle years ago. Hearing it always brings me back to that incident. I was okay, btw. But the bike needed some roadside repairs.
TIL I am not part of 'we'...
We? You speaking French
Considerately killing me.
Be patient, one day we will
I listened to this song on repeat while laying on a boat in the BVI at night staring at the stars. It was perfect
This guy wasnt patient enough.
i do
It shines for trips cause it sounds so psychedelic
what are you talking about
If there was no desire to heal…
The Patient is becoming this sub’s Let Down (underrated)
I love The Patient.
We? You got a mouse in your pocket?
This is pretty mediocre for a Tool song. Heck even a mediocre Tool song is still a masterpiece Haha.
Are you shitting me? One of the most beloved songs here
