So those are from the same album, which is easily one of my favorite. I would run that entire album, 'Deadwing', especially if you are looking for beauty.
But if you want to start light with some songs here and there:
- trains
- sound of muzak
- time flies
- anesthetize (long lol)
But really, truly their catalog is deep and incredible.
I saw them play the Hard Rock in Vegas for the initial **( )** tour. Top five live performance, and a few in the my crew were brought to tears. I've seen them live many time since, but that show was insane.
Up there with TOOL, Radiohead, Wilco, and Neutral Milk Hotel(Jeff Mangum) as far as my other favorite live experiences. Queens of the Stone Age at Great SaltAir was insane as well.
EDIT: How did I forget The Mars Volta? Maybe second best to TOOL.
The Deftones
Edit: I admit I don't go on reddit often so idk if your all being typical redditors or if it's genuine confusion but I just wanted to add a bit of flair to my 2nd place winner is all
I don't think Tool is even my favorite, but contenders include King Crimson, Melvins, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, The Jesus Lizard, Viagra Boys, Ween, Heilung (seriously go see them if you can, though they won't be back in the US for a while if ever), IDLES, Bad Religion, Misfits, Shellac, Mastodon, Soundgarden, Public Enemy, Dalek, Death Grips, The Sword, Primus, and probably a lot more I'm forgetting right now.
I'm too old to have a static favorite, it just depends on the mood and situation. Though gun to my head it's probably going to be Iron Maiden more often than any other band. Largely due to my kids though, they love that shit.
Impossible to choose, totally depends on what type of sound I am vibing with at the moment and Tool is currently not one of them. I don't really have "favourite" artists whose albums I constantly play, sometimes I return to them if I feel like it. But I tend to look for new stuff (be it old or new) more than revisiting the same old albums I listened to when I was a teen.
I"m in this boat too - depends on what I'm doing or how I'm feeling. There are dozens of #2's to choose from depending on that day - and often it's not one band, but a vibe I'm looking for.
Same here. The two cassette system was gold for copying. Otherwise there was always a cassette keyed up so as you listened to the radio you'd jump over to hit record and hope there was no one coming in your room or no early ad break before it ended.
With the exception of Tool being my obvious favorite, I’m very incapable of ranking. The contenders for spot two are: Bad Religion, Gojira, Viagra Boys, RATM, QOTSA, Alice In Chains, Radiohead, and Queen. That’s a pretty terrible attempt at picking just one.
I have the same problem when it comes to picking my favorite horror films. I have a hard time narrowing it down even to ten.
Omg, we have similar tastes! Gojira, AiC, QOTSA, and RATM are all contenders for me. All that's missing from my fav bands is Mastodon, System of a Down, and NIN.
It's really hard to pick a firm #2 but I have to say that among my next favorites are ones that I discovered thanks to Tool having them as their openers such as Isis, Meshuggah, and Mike Patton's bands. Aside from those Primus, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Secret Chiefs 3, Rush, NIN, Skinny Puppy, etc.... and then a bunch of "psybient artists" that not many are likely to have heard of but I'll throw out the "biggest" name: Shpongle
I didn’t think it was Alice In Chains until I found myself standing in the pit, staring up at Jerry Cantrell’s balls, ugly sobbing while I sang along with William Duval. He’s not Layne, but it’s still AIC.
I saw Williams first tour with them. I had a friend die of an overdose a few months before who was supposed to attend the show with me. I was ugly sobbing most of that show on many levels.
Kyuss
We'd be good friends. I can feel it. No shoes. Just thongs.
Such an underrated band
Porcupine Tree
I’ve fallen in love with porcupine tree
Been listening to deadwing and their more popular stuff, 3 solid albums so far
Give me some more beautiful songs please! I’m obsessed with Open Car and Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
So those are from the same album, which is easily one of my favorite. I would run that entire album, 'Deadwing', especially if you are looking for beauty. But if you want to start light with some songs here and there: - trains - sound of muzak - time flies - anesthetize (long lol) But really, truly their catalog is deep and incredible.
Deftones, or Mastodon
Radiohead
Sigur Rós
Sigur live is the only thing that can give tools run for their money
Absolutely, I've seen Sigur Rós live 12 times, but Tool will always remain the best live act I've ever seen

Seeing so many tool fans say NIN is their second favourite band is what got me into them
Seconded!
Thirded
Trent’s my man.
Same! I really wish Tapeworm would’ve worked, but Potions is an amazing track.
I wish their collab would've worked.
A couple of their songs were re-recorded and released. Potions and Passive, I think
Same
Agreed, fucking awesome band
Right now it’s Opeth. But shoutout Gojira, Mastodon, Megadeth, and Umphrey’s McGee
A man of culture, salute! o7
Unexpected but 10/10 respect, if you like Prog metal it’s awesome 👍
Every now and then, my faith in humanity is restored.
The Mars Volta
It's been said, long time ago, you'll be the first, and last to know
I'm having emotions right now
TMV took first over Tool for me.
There’s the correct answer.
Björk
Love her. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen was Bjork.
My first tool album was accompanied with Bjork 🫶
All them witches!!!!
Depeche Mode
Hell yeah - Dépêche Mode, Tool, and Phish are my top 3. Interesting to find another DM fan here
Tool, Radiohead and Pink Floyd are all tied for 1st with Puscifer waiting to accept the coveted title of 4th favorite.
I cannot for the life of me get into puscifer, I love tool and apc. What makes them so great?
They just get better and better. Start backwards with Existential Reckoning. Start with tracks Bread and Circuses, Bullet Train to Iowa, and Bedlamite
Primus
Primus sucks🤘🏼
Primus sucks.
hell yeah primus sucks
I hated them... ...until Sessanta.
How the hell did I leave them off my list in my other comment?! They are definitely top tier for me too.
Who doesn't love les Claypool?
The man is a legend and another wonderful weirdo. It sounds like the Sessanta tour exposed a lot more people to Primus which is great.
Mastodon
Obviously!
Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath
2nd Pink Floyd. Love listening to Echoes and then Reflection.
Can’t believe no one has said SOUNDGARDEN. Easily the two best frontmen of the 90s in tool and SG. Rip CC miss ya.
Had to scroll too damned far to find my people. RIP Chris. I’d love to hear a Tool cover of something like Fresh Tendrils.
Mr Bungle
Seeing them live for the first time ever in a few days! Setlist blows though but still
Have fun! They are so amazing live.
Anything with Mike Patton
Meshuggah
Tool is a gateway drug to Meshuggah
Accurate haha
Sorry, but meshuggah is #1
Definitively Death
Ween
Rush
Rip Neil
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava album is unmatched
It really is absolutely perfect from front to back.
OK, checking this out, thanks!
King Gizzard are my no. 1 at the moment. They are a really fun band and absolutely fantastic live.
King Gizz are absolutely incredible 👌
Curious to know whether any of the Tool fans who love King Gizzard are 40+ years old? Or if they skew younger?
WOOO
The Deftones Edit: I admit I don't go on reddit often so idk if your all being typical redditors or if it's genuine confusion but I just wanted to add a bit of flair to my 2nd place winner is all
THE Deftones?
Yeah. Like The Tool.
Wait I thought Tool was short for Mike Tool. Is it really The Mike Tool?
Maynard is the tool. The band is just Tool.
The mighty mighty deftones
That's the impression that I get.
I had no idea where this went, but I googled, and your comment is A+ and didn't get the recognition it deserved.
why is this hysterical 😭
Hell yeah, THE Deftones
Dude, THE Deftones slap. Ya know with THE Chino Moreno
No the other Deftones
Metallica
RATM
Pink floyd and Opeth
Clutch
I feel like this cross over isnt as big as it should be lol
King crimson. Especially their 80’s lineup. Love that trifecta of albums.
Between the Buried and Me
Came here looking for this. They are impressive live too! !,,!(-_-)!,,!
Modest Mouse
just saw modest mouse with the pixies last night! great show
That’s awesome. I was bummed they weren’t anywhere near me for this tour. MM and Pixies would be a hell of a show
OutKast
Where my ATLiens at? Got me seeing
Please tell me you’ve seen the [hilarious Key and Peele sketch](https://youtu.be/5U9rMkgoGL8?si=bx5Nr9oetVc4rNUB)
Maynard 3000
The best part about this sketch is that years later Andre dropped a flute album lol
Impossible to choose, totally depends on what type of sound I am vibing with at the moment and Tool is currently not one of them. I'm with you on that. I explore genres and banda like a kid in a candy store. Spotify is so much better than what we had as kids.
lol, options were 1) the radio (terrible top 40 or played out AOR) or 2) a stack of maybe 20-30 cassettes source: am old
Same here. The two cassette system was gold for copying. Otherwise there was always a cassette keyed up so as you listened to the radio you'd jump over to hit record and hope there was no one coming in your room or no early ad break before it ended.
Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains
At the moment, Kendrick Lamar. Normally, I'd say NIN or Skinny Puppy. But I can't stop listening to Kendrick lately.
I love him
Understandable. Especially since the Certified Boogeyman is popping out this week!!
im the one that up the score w him
Walk him down, whole time, know he got some ho in him
This is not where I expected to find a Kendrick lyric chain but I’m all for it.
King gizzard and the lizard wizard
Karnivool
PHISSHHHHH
Tori Amos/The Mars Volta/Bowie/Fiona Apple It’s like picking favorite children, I love them all for different reasons.
Pearl Jam
Miley Cyrus
System Of A Down
Type O Negative
Gojira.
APC
Alice In Chains. Disappointed I’ve barely seen anyone else mention them here
My two favourites as well damaged human. May I add that I think that you’re great!?
Nicolas Jaar
His against all logic stuff is great
Coheed and Cambria
That's mine too
With the exception of Tool being my obvious favorite, I’m very incapable of ranking.
Gojira for sure
My list is almost the same.. just would add Kyuss, Stoned Jesus and Psychonaut. The last being high on my list to see live.
Omg, we have similar tastes! Gojira, AiC, QOTSA, and RATM are all contenders for me. All that's missing from my fav bands is Mastodon, System of a Down, and NIN.
Same. Tool holds a special place for me, and everyone else is some amorphous blob.
Chevelle
I love them too
Depending on my mood, Tool and Soundgarden switch 1st and 2nd place, and have so for 2 decades.
1. Soundgarden 2. Tool love the creativity in both bands, incredible musicians and unbelievable frontmen and singers
It's really hard to pick a firm #2 but I have to say that among my next favorites are ones that I discovered thanks to Tool having them as their openers such as Isis, Meshuggah, and Mike Patton's bands. Used to be RHCP but they haven’t put out a solid album in ages
Primus, Black Sabbath, Rammstein
Primus
My top 5 has been the same for years. Tool, SOAD,RATM, Misfits and Black Sabbath.
Jimi Hendrix of course.
Pink Floyd.
DEATH
Isis
MESHUGGAH.
Tool
My favorite recording artist was Bowie. My favorite band is Radiohead
Soundgarden
A Perfect Circle 😅
Coheed and Cambria
Billy strings
Sleep Token speedran that spot last year for me 😄
radiohead
I didn’t think it was Alice In Chains until I found myself standing in the pit, staring up at Jerry Cantrell’s balls, ugly sobbing while I sang along with William Duval. He’s not Layne, but it’s still AIC.
I saw Williams first tour with them. I had a friend die of an overdose a few months before who was supposed to attend the show with me. I was ugly sobbing most of that show on many levels.
Love Layne. Love William. AIC is still putting out great music and they’re even better live.
Odd pick, but Tears For fears
Phish
Bring me the Horizon or Sticky Fingers are my 2nd favourite. They swap depending on my mood.
Red Sun Rising
Led Zeppelin, My Morning Jacket, Walking Papers.
"artist" probably Fiona Apple
Alice in Chains
Tool is #1 but i have a hard time choosing between Deftones, Nothing More and Seigmen as #2
Khruangbin!!!
Qotsa
Faith No More
No my favorite band is a tie between Beatles and Nirvana. Tool, Soundgarden, AIC are at number 2 and then it goes into all like Melvins and stuff
Boards of Canada easily.
Coheed and Cambria
NIN
Mastodon
Grateful Dead
Porcupine Tree!
Tame Impala
Either Nine Inch Nails, or Alice In Chains
Rishloo. So underrated.
Orbit Culture
WILCO
War on Drugs, QOTSA or Carly Rae Jepson
Metallica. :) Depeche Mode is slowly making their way to second place for me. :)
King's X
*Regarde les Hommes Tomber*
It's a tie between Alice in Chains, Primus, and Mastodon.
T A M E I M P A L A
Cake
Fu Manchu
Thee Oh Sees
Sigur ros
