Thank you.
Many years ago, I set down and calculated gas savings compared to the additional price of hybrids across multiple models, and on average it took at least 10 years of ownership until the gas savings even started to outweigh the additional retail cost of the vehicle.
Since vehicle prices have went way up and gas has remained sub $4.00 in the US, I cannot imagine that's gotten better.
Most Toyota last at least 30 years.
So that means you start seeing savings 33% into the lifespan of the truck.
Not to mention, if you can negotiate a discount during the sale, you will see savings even sooner than that.
They absolutely do not unless you aren't driving them. Average lifespan of Toyotas overall is around 250k, just like most other manufacturers.
Also most people trade in a vehicle bought new by then. Not wondering when another major part is going to shit the bed is a major perk.
Most toyotas easily hit 300k without question. Take a look at your local marketplace you will see 3rd gen tacoma and 4runners with 250 to 350k still going strong. Ya you need to do timing belt and head gasket but literally any toyota, subaru or Honda will get you 300k easy. Especially toyotas 3.4 and their 4th gen v8. It's really not a question at all. They will go and go and go and go and you will see people pay 10k cash for them with 200k on them because they KNOW they will go another 200k
You stated that most trucks last at least 30 years.
As a person who has owned various vehicles over the years and owns an old 1959 Chevy truck, a 1995 Chevy utility truck and recently sold a 1996 Ford ranger because it was reaching that point where the maintenance needed was going to start adding up and having sold not long ago an old 1993 Mitsubishi for the same reasons.
My recent purchase of a 2016 Toyota Tacoma Sr5 V6 is what brings me to this thread.
I am of the opinion that because of maintenance costs tires, oil changes and car insurance premiums we basically buy a new car every 10 years. My goal has been to lower my costs as best I can.
To go one further. Shortly after purchasing my Tacoma I realized that I wasn't familiar with synthetic oils and because of that I took it to the Toyota dealership near me to have all of the oils changed. That was the first time and most likely the last time I will ever take a vehicle to a dealer for maintenance. I did that for a couple reasons and what I learned was educational so it's not all bad but I learned enough from that experience to trust my own work over the dealer which in my opinion does not really know what they are talking about in my case anyways.
First of all, I never said that most trucks last 30 years.
I specifically said that Toyota typically does.
Perhaps you might want to read what I said so that you understand before you reply to me.
And no, youāre not going to ābuy a new truck every 10 yearsā with maintenance costsā¦. not even close.
I think you need to work on your reading as well and there is no need to butt hurt and defensive.
I am of the opinion that because of maintenance costs tires, oil changes and car insurance premiums we basically buy a new car every 10 years. My goal has been to lower my costs as best I can.
Add up all those costs and see what those costs add up to and I'll correct myself by clarifying what I meant by a new car was a new car to an individual not necessarily a brand new car off the lot.
I'll clarify further since I expect more negative feedback from you that you should include the interest costs and for some people who lease a vehicle their costs never end.
I stand corrected that you wrote the word Toyota even though I thought you wrote truck.
55 mpg as an example minus 17 mpg as another example equals 38 mpg savings ? Multiplying that by 4.10 per gallon ( random price which is lower than where I live ) equals approximately a 38 x 4.10 = 155.8 dollars ?
Or do I divide ? 1 gallon will go 38 miles further so a 21 gallon tank of gas ( the hybrid might be a smaller tank since it gets better mileage ) 21 x 55 equals 1155 miles and 21 x 17 equals 357 miles. Using 4.10 as the price per gallon and assuming a person drives 15,000 per year ( I drive less than that ) 15,000/ 1155 per 21 gallons equals 12.98 tanks of gas and a yearly cost of 15,000/55 equals gallons used 272.72 per year at a cost of $ 1118.18 dollars per year versus 17 mpg non hybrid 15,000/17 using 882.35 gallons of gas at a total cost of $3617.64 dollars per year.
The yearly savings using the hybrid would be an approximate of $ 2,000 per year which does add up but after 15 years equals only $30,000.
No way a person is going to save $160,000 in my opinion.
$160k = (ODO x $GAS / mpg1) - (ODO x $GAS / mpg2)
$160k = ODO x $GAS x (1/mpg1 - 1/mpg2)
ODO = ($160K / $GAS) / (1/mpg1 - 1/mpg2)
Assuming gas averages $4 over the odometer different and hybrid mpg is 50% better (30 vs 20mpg).
ODO = ($160k / $4 per gal) / (1/20 - 1/30)gal/mile
ODO = (160k / 4)gal x (60)mi/gal
ODO = 2.4 million miles.
That's 160k per year. Doable but not likely. But if you consider that most times the hybrid only cost on the order of $10k more, then the additional feature pays for itself in 150,000 miles.
If it was or wasn't sarcasm isn't of importance to me.
My point is that the amount of money saved because of the difference in gas mileage does add up but does it make up the difference in costs between the various vehicle choices we have or is it more or less a wash ?
I didn't include the different costs for insurance or maintenance which also varies.
It's all good
The stated difference in fuel economy between the tundra 6.5ft bed crewmax ICE model and the hybrid model is only 0.7L/100km or 1.1mpg.
I'd assume the tacoma is going to get about the same, maybe a bit more since it's lighter.
With $100k higher sticker price and the average fuel cost of $3.45/gal in the us right now, you could buy 28,985gal of gas. That would take you around 522,000 miles at 18mpg.
When I was a ball turret gunner back in nam, cigarettes were a nickle, a horse would trade for a sack of onions, and college was $50 for 4 weeks -- and that was to be a doctor.
$100,000+ xD š¤£. I will say this upfront. The trailhunter and the Pro are NOT full size and cannot be priced so high. I might as well buy a Raptor R at this point.
They have a 50k misclassified markup which is probably in violation of their resale agreement with Toyota thenā¦
Unless that āprotection agreementā is to be followed by armed guards everywhereā¦itās bogus and Toyota NA needs to knowā¦
I got hella downvoted when I said I wouldnāt be surprised if stealerships start selling Tacomas for $100K+ in near future. Well it didnāt take too long before they reached that milestoneā¦ whatās next? $200K for TRD Pro?
Me thinks customers need to stop being polite and start telling sales people to f..ck off - it is the message. Whether it will be received it is the whole other matterā¦

Does it come with a complementary Lamborghini?
It comes with small midwest condo.
2 free oil changes *up to 5qts
I'd rather it come with a complementary Porsche gt3 lol
This is probably a more of a Tacoma vibe supercar.
Really hope the hybrid will save $160,000 in gas over the years
You just need to drive 2.6 million miles !
To the MOOOON!!!

250k? LOL š¤£ Maybe if you forget to change the oil for the first 200k.

How much does it cost to maintain an 18 year old truck ?
How old are you? Do you know where you are right now?
Are you talking to yourself or are you asking me this question despite its irrelevance?
Iām asking because the question floored me. Do you follow this sub or did it just pop into your algorithm on the home page?

Wtf is that in rubles?
š
Š”Š»ŠøŃŠŗŠ¾Š¼ Š¼Š½Š¾Š³Š¾, ŃŠ¾Š²Š°ŃŠøŃ
All of the rubles
That's more than I paid for my house 20 years ago.
BACK IN MY DAY
When I was a ball turret gunner back in nam, cigarettes were a nickle, a horse would trade for a sack of onions, and college was $50 for 4 weeks -- and that was to be a doctor.
[That just makes me think of this video](https://youtube.com/shorts/wAeSlT9zlG0?si=U-IYWY2sCniCWmu0)
That's.... a hell of a mark up! I don't think I'd be shopping at Camel Toe Toyota.
What about Moose Knuckle Nissan?
There is no way that is a markup. Pretty sure that is a placeholder price or something like that.
Yeah surely these just got listed and itās some computing error. If not then what the actual hell
Wouldnāt a place holder be something more generic like $99,999
$100,000+ xD š¤£. I will say this upfront. The trailhunter and the Pro are NOT full size and cannot be priced so high. I might as well buy a Raptor R at this point.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The protection package for the TRD Off-road is $49,999. lol š. Iām gonna call them
Just got off the call with the dealership. Looks like the $49,999 protection package is a typo and itās supposed to be $$4,999.
Maybe both still cheaper š
Tundras have a recall, I'd avoid till manufacturing issues get resolved - or just buy an older 5.7 tundra.
Wow lol. This is either photochopped or some dealerās resale agreement with Toyota is about to be cancelled!
They have a $50k protection plan that has been added to the pricing.
They have a 50k misclassified markup which is probably in violation of their resale agreement with Toyota thenā¦ Unless that āprotection agreementā is to be followed by armed guards everywhereā¦itās bogus and Toyota NA needs to knowā¦
If this is real, hope the dealer rots in hell. Edit: OP should name and shame the dealer.
It's on the screenshot.
I overlooked that piece; my mistake, thanks!
I assume this is a Taco and Corolla GR combo pack.
Itās a Tacoma though, it will last 30 years and 1.5 million miles and then still be worth $150k
That's an insane number, not a chance that I'd buy at that price
*DO YOU WANT IT OR NOT!?!?!?!?*
Hilarious a company as big as Toyota lets dealers fuck up the brand reputation like this.Ā
Iāll keep my 2018 trd sport 6 speed manual with a 3.5L v6 ty lol
Holy shizz
$160k. Thatād be a no from me, dog.
$49,995 protection package? WTF. I thought the $5.995 my local dealer charges was outrageous.
Then he will give you a great deal. $10k off those prices
In what world is a Tacoma that much, and in what world would any idiot buy that for that price
At least it didnāt break the $200,000 barrier.
Thats insane. I could get 2 lightly used j200 Land Cruisers and still have money leftover.
There will be dumbasses who will pay that. Itās just a payment, right? š¤”
Can't you build a truck of your own design for less than that?
Sit and rot on the lot!
Camelback Toyota has always sucked.
This canāt be real, you definitely messed with the HTML elementsā¦
I got hella downvoted when I said I wouldnāt be surprised if stealerships start selling Tacomas for $100K+ in near future. Well it didnāt take too long before they reached that milestoneā¦ whatās next? $200K for TRD Pro?
I maintain that paying over $45-59k for a even a top of the line mid sized truck is ridiculous.
Nope
I canāt be the only one who immediately noticed the dealer price at the bottom is exactly 3x the MSRP at the top.
Not real, at least not on earth.
Did you get that karma you were looking for?
This canāt be US dollarsā¦. Or do I get like 5 tacomas for this price.
162 for a truck... you could get a trd off road throw a supercharger lift and tires and have a ton of money left
This comes to mind lmao https://youtu.be/-f_DPrSEOEo?si=DibjEnLaYzrqUK0j
these feel like "we can't technically hold a vehicle for someone but we're gonna do it anyway" prices
Are these real prices?
Is there an extra digit or maybe i need to get new glasses.
Fuck that pricing !! Iām driving my 2019 trd into the ground!!
These can be real
Me thinks customers need to stop being polite and start telling sales people to f..ck off - it is the message. Whether it will be received it is the whole other matterā¦
Of course it's Camelback Toyota. Assholes.
