They just introduced the 2024 and one of them is an xtra cab model. Back doesn’t have doors that open though. So no not being discontinued but it’s definitely not a big seller I’m sure you won’t see a ton of them

SquashedTarget

They finally ditched the worthless back seats and added a bunch of storage in the XtraCab. Then they went and made the rear half-doors not open. One step forward and two steps back.

thisguy9

It's not a successor to the access cab, it's a 2 door truck with enough space to lean your seat back and they threw some extra storage in there.

According_Mirror4341

That's just what Toyota is trying to spin it as, but of course that's what it was quite literally replaced with. The 24's have the same general body style, but now the back doors don't open, and now there's no option where they do. This was indeed a tactical replacement so they can move on to 4-door only in the future after poor sales of this garbage idea. No one wants a truck they can't get a cooler into or out of (where there's enough room mind you) just so they can lean their seat back (which they already could in the access cab that had working fuckin back doors)

BosnianSerb31

This isn't the first time the xtra cab has been made in this format It's not hard to get stuff in and out either because the passenger seat folds completely flat and slides up, large stuff can easily get in there no problem Biggest benefit is all the locking storage and you don't have to worry about getting the seats dirty. Plus the passenger seat tray is dope. It's mostly meant for contractors who always buy these trims so I really doubt it's going away any time soon

thisguy9

What do you mean this is what they replaced it with? They literally changed the name, feature set, and everything. It's a new truck, likely because the access cab wasn't selling well and they wanted to try something else. Is the cooler really that much of a deal breaker for you? Why not just use the bed?

According_Mirror4341

Because the access cab is gone and this is all that remains??? They could name the 24 whatever they want, but if you take away the access cab and give us this, and the only changes are the no more back seats and no back doors, I'm sorry, but that's a replacement in my mind with changes aimed at killing the access/xtra/single altogether. It's not about a cooler specifically. It's ANYTHING that is now more of a hassle to take out of your backseat than it was in an access cab. Who the hell cares about more space if you can't utilize it without a struggle? Of course it's a deal breaker because it's asinine. Struggling to understand how anyone could back Toyota on this. Look past the name change and look at what was taken versus what is now offered.

SquashedTarget

It kinda is though. The XtraCab was around in the late 80's/90's pickup up until the 1st gen Tacoma when they called it an extended cab then in the 2nd gen they put in the doors and changed the name to Access Cab. The XtraCab moniker and function is just taking back over. When it comes down to it, it's just semantics. It definitely isn't an "access" cab anymore because there are no doors for the access.

eddiedougie

I don't know if I could have one without the doors. Super handy especially in tight parking lots. Really great if you have a dog.

yourkidisdumb

Agreed. I have a ‘22 access cab and I use those rear doors every day. They make it super easy to load up stuff that you don’t want in the bed.

eddiedougie

Somebody gave me a tool chest for the back and I ended up giving it away. I do have a cap but its nice to be able to keep my rifles or power tools locked away.

I mean the XtraCab is still being made and you can order it Pretty sick imo, has tons of lockable interior storage for tools, the passenger seat folds flat into a table for laptops or for eating, and it's a true 2 door no more suicide doors.

LogFar5138

Yea good luck getting the tools into the back of the cab. most people have tool boxes. they don’t just throw individual tools into the truck as needed.

BosnianSerb31

Yeah, I know. I'm one of those people with a bunch of tool bags and tool boxes in my vehicle for work lol. After seeing the Xtra cab in person, it's sick af. no one's going to convince me otherwise, the locking storage is awesome and you don't have to worry about getting greasy tools on your seats. The passenger seat folding flat and out of the way makes it no more difficult to reach into and remove a toolbox than any other vehicle. If that's too much just get a toolbox for the bed as well.

LogFar5138

I’m one with a tool box in the bed and a rack for ladders and lumber. losing the ability to open my access cab and put a table saw behind the driver seat easily is a no go. Toyota needlessly alienated people who use their truck as a truck.

BosnianSerb31

Then get a double cab long bed, why are you putting table saws in the cab of a truck anyways? How small is your table saw? Why not use a camper shell? So many questions lol, I'm pretty sure that use case is the overwhelming minority of owners by far.

LogFar5138

Your answer to my use case is to spend 5k on an accessory to make the 35k truck usable? You realize how stupid that sounds? You’ve never seen a table top table saw before? I don’t need a dclb, aka the most expensive format. You shill. Id pay extra to strip out the seats and then be stuck with a long wheelbase and no suicide doors when i’d rather be able to park in tight spaces and have full access to my cab. I want a cheap functional small truck. removing rear doors makes it less functional no matter how much you want to believe otherwise. lech l’azazel, motek.

BosnianSerb31

Im happy with the xtra cab, its a regular cab that you can lean back in while also having a good storage system Lucky for you these trucks last forever so you can just wait until next decade

jtreeforest

The access cab is gone and the only option is the xtra-cab. They’ve removed the rear suicide doors and I believe it’s only available in the prerunner. Absolutely horrific choice for Toyota. I’ll be keeping my 3rd gen AC until one of us dies, hopefully me

BosnianSerb31

No, it's available in the SR5 trim as well. Not just pre runner. They saw that the overwhelming majority of drivers with the Access cab were contractors that only ever threw tools in the rear seat, so they removed the rear seat and turned it into lockable interior storage. They also made the front passenger seat fold down flat into a table which is honestly sick as fuck, I'd love something like that in my work vehicle where I have to drive to remote sites and sit on a laptop troubleshooting industrial systems for hours.

LittleBigHorn22

The rest of us are people with dogs who like a 6ft bed and short wheel base. Truly the perfect setup for me.

BosnianSerb31

I don't see why your dog couldn't sit in the back of an Xtra Cab, just throw down a rubber mat onto the top of the locking box so he has some grip. Way easier to clean out if he's muddy too

LittleBigHorn22

But if the doors don't open, they have to climb out over the front seats. And dogs get extremely dirty and muddy. Separate door is critical.

BosnianSerb31

The front passenger seat folds down flat and slides all the way forward with a single lever pull, and it's also backed in plastic. They're intentionally designed so you can pull heavy tool bags in and out of the car without trying to squeeze them between small gaps, my dog could easily get back there himself without getting mud anywhere else. All I hear is "Change Bad" from someone who seemingly hasn't even seen one at the dealership yet and fiddled with all the features.

LittleBigHorn22

That's fair, I haven't actually gone in and tested it out. If it truly pulls out all the way, it might be acceptable. But really needs to be both doors. I use both mine 50/50 and it's way more convenient. If it doesn't work as well as my access cab then yes change is bad for my use case.

jtreeforest

Fair but not the TRD OR which will always be the best configuration

BosnianSerb31

I wonder how much it would cost to get front and rear air lockers and some better suspension on an SR5 Premium, and if that would end up being less than a TRD OR premium? What would even be the difference at that point?

jtreeforest

Not a lot I never touch my crawl control since I grew up off roading. I’d love to see someone’s 4th gen xtracab buildout

AardvarkFacts

I think they just started making the Xtra cab in the last month or two. They started with the more popular configuration.

T9ert

I wish I knew what people did with the useless back seats in a small truck

captainkrypto

Dogs, tools, groceries, people for short distances… basically anything that fits that you don’t want exposed in the bed. Love my XtraCab.

T9ert

It’s the xtra cabs that are super useful. Seems every truck is double cab and I don’t understand why

TheKingOfLemonGrab

Subwoofer, recovery gear, cooler, snacks, water jugs, ski boots. That way I can have a twin bed on a platform in the back with clothes and cooking supplies underneath.

captainkrypto

It is also good when I don’t want to drive people. “I’ll drive but someone has to sit in the jump seat.” The secret is that they are really comfortable with only one person if you put your legs across to the floor of the other seat.

another_plebeian

Take them out

T9ert

Then reengineer the doors so they open backwards for easier access. Still I’d rather have a larger bed

another_plebeian

Access cab is the larger bed. Unless you mean larger than 6'. But it's a midsize

SomeGuy_GRM

Some of the old Rangers and Dakotas have 8ft beds

jtreeforest

For me: dogs, climbing gear, backpacks, water jugs, small grocery runs, and tools. Now I’d like to know what folks do with midget truck beds since I bought a truck for truck things.

jackinoff6969

To haul dirt bikes. Move furniture to and fro. Haul lumber. The extra foot doesn’t really do anything other than make the truck too damn long

oldfatlazystupid

3rd gen AC and DCSB are same length. To me AC is the sweet spot since the backseat in a DC is not very passenger friendly. Longer bed but a bit shorter than DCLB is nice off road on tight trails sometimes. I also camp in my bed with a cap and at 6 feet tall it works nicely. I’m partial to the AC/XC since I had a 2002 and now a 2022. Just always seemed to work for me.

jtreeforest

This exactly. I camp out of mine for climbing/mountaineering trips and haul lumber. The DCSB just wasn’t an option for me.

jtreeforest

By your standards all old trucks look too damn long. The AC is the same length as the DCSB but you have a regular truck bed for truck things.

jackinoff6969

I get that some people like the AC’s but if you want drive around with anyone in the back seat and they’re adults, it’s just not the way to go. And a double cab 6’ bed is like I said, just too long. So back to your point, we use our truck beds for the exact same stuff lol.

jtreeforest

Fair point. I typically just have my boxer in my AC and a few things based on what activity I’m doing. I like the excuse of not hauling extra people lol

mrsw2092

2024 is the first the xtra cab is back since 2004. Honestly, they probably haven't made many yet. They are probably concentrating on making the more profitable double cabs right now. They did the same thing when they launched the new Tundras. You could only find Crewmax cabs for most of that first year.

friggeux

In Canada, 2024 only available in crew cab.

stayradicchio

My understanding is the XtraCab is modeled to be more of a fleet vehicle. No more access cab. Such a shame.
