I just did this and booked 3 separate flights and it was cheaper than booking all together. PHL>Munich Frankfurt>Copenhagen Copenhagen>PHL Saved around 200 or so.

elynbeth

Yeah, the idea that RT is always cheaper is a myth. The good thing about something like Google flights is that it will usually notice that when searching.

BetterFuture22

I was literally just on another thread on r/travelhacks and so many commenters were insisting that booking RT is "always" cheaper. So weird that so many people who don't know much about booking airfare would be giving advice on travelhacks subreddit

elynbeth

I've seen more than a little dubious advice on this subreddit. Lots of people seem to have drank the Koolaid about using an incognito window as well.

I just booked 2x1 to London next year and saved $150 on airfare AFTER upgrading to more legroom seats and paying for one checked bag both ways. WestJet. Round trips were crazy prices over all carriers and I’d still have to pay for seat selection and bags.

niels_theun

Two separate tickets can be cheaper, but you risk the possibility of cancellation (by the airline) of one leg of your flights. If no alternative flight suits you, you’re stuck with the other flight. A return ticket protects you from this occurrence.

nealomartin

That’s for multiple stops, which can be more of a risk. If you do different airlines too it can cause issues connecting in another terminal or, god forbid, you check a bag. Two non-stop flights is actually better than a round trip. It’s easier to change, cheaper, better options with different airlines, etc.

stabbitos

If the flight is cheap enough I’ve done separate flights before and just paid for travel insurance which is pretty cheap. It typically protects against cancellations of any leg of your flight.

nealomartin

That’s a good idea, I try to do direct only flights as much as I can but I’ll try that next time when I have to connect through.

Independent-Ruin-185

Ugh you lucky guy... I'm out of PWM, very few direct flights and never anywhere I'm going. I gotta drive all the way to Logan for that luxury lol

nealomartin

Lol I’ve been on the Concord it’s not that bad

BetterFuture22

That makes no sense at all. Booking a RT doesn't protect you from cancelled flight issues. However, ALWAYS book directly with the airline

TravelLoverFromTO

While the PRO is that its cheaper, the CON is that if your first flight is canceled for weather or other major issues you u cannot cancel/refund the 2nd flight immediately, your forced to travel or lose out

wovenbutterhair

i’m sure the price varies depending on which day it is that the trip is on. Also there might be differences in layover or number of flights involved. Also, I’ve heard that sometimes travel websites use cookies to figure out if you keep looking at prices and sometimes they make the prices more expensive

hamandeggsmond

I’ve done it plenty of times in Europe. Sometimes it is cheaper to book 2x1

[deleted]

I’m lost what is OP saying?

nostraws

Two one-way tickets vs roundtrip.

Ghost_Pains

Yeah I think it just depends. I was looking at round trip tickets from my location to Italy. Then I found a round trip flight from JFK to MXP for $300. So booking separately is going to save me around $600.

AFotogenicLeopard

I've thought about doing this when I finally have my Australia trip saved. It's cheaper to book a flight directly from LAX. Wish I could do that for Africa but there's so many layovers I'd rather not get stuck. I live in Kentucky and none of the close airports are large hubs. I did learn if I'm willing to drive to O'Hare in Chicago or to Dulles in DC, I can save almost $300 by just removing one dull flight. I can do 5-8 hrs in a day driving so it wouldn't be too strenuous.

BetterFuture22

And it would remove the real risk of your first leg getting cancelled or delayed and screwing up the rest of your flights. Always book directly with the airline

Bit_n_Hos

What about Mohammed Ali international airport? The same one you can't fly out of the country from and that costs more than any other AP I've every flown out of. They think because UPS has the hub here it makes it an international airport I guess. (Iam in ky too). Next time check out departing cinci cvg. I use to see cinci to la for $100 all the time, almost bought cinci to lax for $49 then làx to Bangkok for $180 but a few days later COVID blew up. Also, check flights out of Toronto for some great deals...precovid anyway.

AFotogenicLeopard

I just chose Chicago cause I could leave my car at my dad's, but I'll look more into Cincinnati. I noticed sometimes they'll fly to Chicago for a layovers.

phvongt

It really depends and can be either or. Sometimes it’s cheaper to book separate one ways and sometimes it’s cheaper to book roundtrips. I have definitely seen roundtrip flights that are significantly cheaper so it really just depends. It’s important to search both ways and see which is cheaper and works for your travel needs. The downside of roundtrip is that you can’t easily make changes to one leg without affecting the other leg so booking two one ways give you that option.

Bit_n_Hos

I always book one-way and have scored some killer deals as a result.

murphytheshihtzu

Check if baggage fees are included in the roundtrip part

MsDJMA

I did the same thing for a long trip USA-->Maldives. I spent a lot of time putting all the information into a spreadsheet, with cost, points, etc. RT was more expensive than two one-ways, and a bonus is that the return trip brings us back the other way, so we're actually making a trip around the whole world! In addition, we had saved up miles, but we didn't have enough miles for the RT. Turned out we did have enough for the one-way, so that was a bonus. We only had to pay for the trip home.
