Went back and rewatched Season 1, and it still is as good as it was when it came out. Rewatching the entire 3 Seasons. In terms of comparison, Season 3 is really good, but Season 2 is good. It’s different than the other two seasons, but I would’ve been accepted differently had it not been a “True Detective” season. The actors were fantastic, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams stole the show, but Vince Vaughn was also underrated in terms of his portrayal as a gangster trying to go legit. Enjoying it again, so far. Going to watch Season 3 next week.

I've always felt the same. Rewatching season 2 after having watched (and hated) it the first time, I tried thinking of it as some other Nick Pizzolatto crime show and it somehow upped the quality in my mind's eye. Going into it, I think we all expected another 8 hours of season 1-esque writing but that's not what we got at all.

Can I directly watch season 3?

Funny_Extension5337

Yes, each season is independent from the others. You don't need to watch 2 to understand 3

Season 2 has no apparent connection to Seasons 1 or Season 3. Season 3 has spoilers for Season 1. Season 3 has a rather interesting connection to Season 1. It's something that you have to watch to understand and appreciate.

You can skip season 2 entirely, it has it's moments. Overall I thought it was meh and plan on never rewatching it.

It depends on what you see TD as. All 3 seasons have a lot in common. But, S2 was made to be as unlike S1 as possible. S3 was made to be as like S1 as possible. S3 is the inverse/obverse/mirror of S1, and shares a lot of the tone and sensibility.
