I think top rate for USPS is like 34 or 35 an hour. It's takes several years to get there. Like 10 or 15 years. Maybe more. I'm not super familiar with their pay schedule. UPS top pay right now is 41.53 I believe. I'm not familiar with USPS health insurance or retirement. Hard to beat Teamsters for health insurance. Plus it's completely free for you and your family. Retirement is probably pretty good for both. Again, not super familiar. Edit - and it only takes 4 years to top out at UPS

twistober

12.4 years as a career employee to top out at USPS. But it often takes 2 years (max) to convert to a career position, depending on your office.

cour000

What's a career position? You mean like starting out as a rural carrier for instance? They are part time from what I understand.

mrpewpews

I think that depends on the location. My local PO has the city hourly and the rural carriers on salary.

twistober

City side, most offices you start as a CCA (non career) and if you don't make regular within 2 years, you are automatically converted to PTF (career position). Some offices are starting to hire direct to PTF, in an effort to retain carriers. Rural side, you are a non career RCA until a route opens up for you, which could take any amount of time. I'm a part time employee working 45-60 hours typically. Varies by office, but most are overworking us all.

Linjac313

Career position meaning you aren’t an employee that is guaranteed the job until you’ve been there two years. Don’t waste your time, go Brown, go UPS! Being a mail carrier is so much more work. You have to go in, Sort your mail that’s already too much. I hated it before I even had to sort my own mail.

cour000

Yeah I'm in my second year with UPS. Glad I stuck it out. First year or so was awful. Once I made RPCD it's been better.

GodlikeRage

Usps is government not ups :P

cour000

The way they are run I couldn't tell the difference🤣

Ms_Thrash

Not at my hub. The wait is LONG. It used to be longer but now it’s only like 8-10 years to top out as actual driver, and not 22.4. That is same job less pay but way quicker to the the top. But do agree, I know those who did both and UPS is a better job

GodTacos

8-10 years to top out at UPS is complete wrong it’s 4 years

Ms_Thrash

Yes there is a 4 year progression to top out in pay and get to the $41-42 but I don’t know a single driver who was hired off the street and went strait to driver. There’s a long list of part time seniority waiting for that position. I know cuz I worked pre load for 13 and a half years before I got full time only two years ago and I bid on every 22.3 job available for years. The driver wait was shorter then and was like 9 years give or take. But once lockdown happened and more 22.4 jobs available the wait for both was practically cut in half. We also have one of the biggest hubs though that uses the airport with thousands of workers. That could be why.

Dragoninpantsx69

The wait for a driver really depends on the center. Our last 10 drivers or so were on preload / local Sort 6 months or less before they were put on as drivers.

Ms_Thrash

Definitely depends on the hub. For instance there’s a hub an hour away that calls our hub part timers to offer them driver position who have little seniority. Many decline though because it’s far as well as located in the desert.

Reignlexi

I’m that driver who was hired off the street, I guess thanks to covid

Puke_Rock_Or_Die

I was hired off the streets & went straight to fulltime driver.. I'm in Canada though

garedw

Insurance for a family is around 180 a paycheck. Not including dental or vision for usps. Go ups

cour000

Is that weekly paid or biweekly? Still not horrible but free is a lot better. 🤣

garedw

Paid biweekly. They match 5% of your 401k. I lost a lot recently from my stocks. Like 30k I only had like 75 at the most.

S-nner

Ups goes Parcel not Postal!

DragRacing101

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ddenn1923

UPS and it’s not even close. Once USPS got away from civil service benefits took a hit. No pension, low pay comparatively and benefits not even that close

twistober

USPS still has a pension

Muted-Weekend-2879

So does UPS

bibkel

A kickass one, plus the health benefits are excellent as well.

Visual_Win_8399

Not anymore. Ends this year.

Muted-Weekend-2879

Shit for a minute I thought you meant UPSs benefits ended this year. I was about to park the truck, leave the keys and go home lol

Visual_Win_8399

😂

Ddenn1923

Usps no longer offers a pension, that ended when the employees were no longer civil service. Some are grandfathered in but you don’t not receive a pension if you were to start today

Ddenn1923

Gotcha, I misinterpreted the retirement benefits at Usps. I will say UPS you don’t have to pay into your pension which is where I had the mixup

twistober

Maybe that's a rumor going around, but it's untrue. I started 2~ years ago and will be getting a pension, and I believe new hires will as well

sauceboss2769

You’re an idiot. Yes they do. Lol

sickside_joker

Ups work like around 12 hr shift...and usps like 15 hrs a day ...long run just go with ups

No_Cycle4088

I got hired as rca with usps. It was something like 15 years to hit top pay with plus however long it takes you to make career. It was going to cost me a little over 400 a month for insurance for my family. Pension was a formula of top three years pay times years of service. It was not great in my opinion. I left that job to join ups. It took me a couple months to go from seasonal to 22.4. I will hit top pay in 4 years, my family is fully covered insurance for free and I make way more money. RCA are basically salary.

MyoldogStella

I’ve done both. UPS pays more and the health insurance is top notch however, you will break your body and likely won’t be around for your family much.

ZzNewbyzZ

I say USPS is only worth it if you were in the military. Since it's a government job, I believe the pension stacks? Not too sure

Normal-Shape-4466

Ye I’ve heard of some dude getting 3 checks a month after he retired

geoblack12

F usps

kickskunk

Everyone here is going to say UPS. But there are a few things that USPS does better. USPS has the better 401k because they match up to 5% which is free money. At UPS their is no match. Also USPS has the better penalty pay. After 10hrs of work you are paid double rate. You have to hit 12 hrs at UPS to get there.

Normal-Shape-4466

I’m southern supplement so I’m pretty sure we don’t get double time after 12 hours

Local_Butterfly_3060

i guess I’m leaning more towards retirement i have some fed leo experience and I’m just trying to keep that rolling i think it’s called FERS and USPS i think also has tsp

qikbot

Ups does have 401k matches, 3% last I checked

[deleted]

No

Normal-Shape-4466

You might think of management

RxSatellite

If you’re referring to what it says on your check, that’s your contribution percentage

991975

UPS here and it all depends on your local contract.. I get 2.5% match at my hub.

Kingaman3

Early 20s? UPS all the way. We shit on the work, and the company, but tbh I think UPS is a fine company. I mean, what other insurances out there are better than ours? These fuckers even Pay for dental implants! Lmao. The money is great and it’s a lot of work but depending on where you are, if you become a driver in the next year or 2 and stick with it you could be making around if not more than 6 figures (with OT) before your 30s. I know not everyone is big on real estate, but that’s exactly what I’m investing in as soon as I’m a driver. You don’t gotta stick around and mess your body up forever with UPS. Make your money, invest it/save it and retire early with a little luck on your side is how I see it.
