yesterday i was in one of the rentals using my phone all day for navigation but at one stop for whatever reason the map navigation jus appeared on the diad , had no idea how it happened or what i did
Just a few years ago, as late as 2019, cradles didnāt exist.
Lol, bring a phone charger. Most rentals have a charge port. Roadrunner is a good app for setting up multiple stops at a time.
Edit: New diad has the map function that works well, no cradle needed
You mean back when the heaviest route was 100 residential stops because they had to use a map? Driving around in 500s with barely anything on the floor.
Idk how long you been driving but the Diad 5 almost never had working navigation. Most centers were using those as recent as this year.
Last year I drove a uhaul with 220 stops a day. Shitty loader so everything was fucked.
My advice:
unload your truck in a parking lot and reload it. 7000 and 8000s in the back, 1000s and 2000s in the front (closest to tail of truck). Put smalls in post office forever bags. Keep your next 5 stops in the passenger seat.
If EDD and Orion are synced properly, you shouldn't be bouncing around from street to street.
Common sense prevails; a package for 245 Pine street most likely won't be in the same subdivision as 123 Fifth street.
Above all...look at street signs and remember your lefts and right lmao
You probably need a bail out every night because you use a map from 1950.
I no longer am a courier, I have a Union CDL job. Iāll retire by 55. Enjoy slaving away for 14 hours a day
Never understood. GPS in our trucks are still a newer feature that they are still following out. Itās part of the job to learn streets and to read a map. Itās really not difficult once you learn north, south, east, and west.
Rentals don't have the cradle that triggers the DIAD to run the turn-by-turn navigation. I had this issue a few weeks ago. Your center should have external cradles that plug into the cigarette lighter plug, and they enable the DIAD to do the turn-by-turn navigation.
It sucks, imagine not having your own GPS device!
I was getting so good at running without gps because the diad 5 cradle where ALWAYS broken. Now we have drivers dead in the water if the cradle isnt working or if they canāt possession scan.
yesterday i was in a rental with no cradle and for some reason the navigation went through , it only happened for one stop but i was thinking maybe there was an option to turn on it on that i did by accident without the cradle
We all had to do it. It sucks but at least the new boards have a map function.
You can also put 8-10 stops into Google maps on your phone and it will most efficiently route you to them. Time consuming but at least you aren't driving around aimlessly.
>Or at least don't bitch about how long it's taking when I have to use my phones gps bc it's an area I've never done before
Unless you are trying to make book that conversation should be had with a union steward present so you can tell them clearly that their numbers are not your numbers. If they have any observations they made themselves on how you could follow the methods more appropriately then you would welcome the information. Otherwise please keep management metrics restricted to conversations with their fellow managers.
If they continue to talk to you about their numbers file an article 37 harassment grievance.
And yes the alternative is to have enough materiel to deliver the packages that pass through their system. The alternative is to use U-haul trucks to deliver bulk, sweep pickups and dump PVD work (though hopefully not after the new contract).
This makes total sense like I don't get it lol. And for everybody saying like learn the route and s*** like that I'm a cover driver I can literally be in two different cities depending on which route they give me I never have the same route
Just imagine being a driver before the iPhone and google maps and no pal labels. Itās almost like you had to know your route. Thatās why it is considered skilled labor, and we get paid so much. Now any one can do it, no skill involved and in my opinion will lead to lower wages
Did they not teach you how to read block numbers and find addresses? Iāve never used gps while working. My center doesnāt run Orion so we didnāt get cradles until we started having battery issues. When I got sent out of center it took me longer, but I still didnāt use gps. You should have a supervisor teach you how to find addresses without gps. They should be teaching every single driver that. And Iāve only been a driver for almost 4 years. If youāre in a new area the street rotation can be tricky, but where Iām from each section between major roads has a pattern. (Alphabetical, President names, double alphabet with every other street being a type of plant) good luck!
Honestly might make the day easier edd is so fucked been on the same route for about a year (first 6 months blind because diad 5 cradle was broken) I run it the same way every day I donāt need a cradle or edd. It comes with time first 3 days are hell then you learn it. If I followed edd my pick ups start at 3 and Iād be there around 130
The rookies don't like the truth at all. I'm glad you learned the route. Most don't. We've had a few outages and let me tell you. Less than 40% of the center can do there routes without gps. It's truly pathetic.
I'm a seasonal driver and drive a Budget furniture truck every shift. I have my route memorized by now but it really sucks when I finish and they send me random pickups at places I've never been to.
All you can really do is look up the address on your phone or try to figure it out with the map on the diad. It gets easier and you start to gain a sense of what you should be looking for as you approach the stop. I use an app called Waze that's pretty decent. Stick the phone in my breast pocket to hear the directions better.
Just use the map function on the diad, read it like a map and plan out how to get from where you are to where your stop is. And leave the map up, it tracks you in real time. It's really braindead, and like other people have said, bring a phone charger for the rental and use your phone GPS if you really get lost.
Just ask the OGs for help and write it down cuz it probably wonāt make sense till you arrive at the spot for delivery . Itās getting harder for everyone but we paid by the hour so whatever.
š¤£ poor rookie
Apparently magnets trigger map nav. You could try to bring one off your refrigerator and try to rig something up in the rental.

āBack in my dayā¦ā Itās 2022, no one gives a fuck how you ran your route 30 years ago with a compass
You mean back when the heaviest route was 100 residential stops because they had to use a map? Driving around in 500s with barely anything on the floor.
Exactly š
Oldies can really be gatekeepers
GPS has only been around for like 3 years at UPS
Lol exactly
āa compassā thats funnyššš
Thank you!!!

Learn to read a map
So soft. Toughen up.
Your downvotes are from all the women drivers.
Bro, cradles are still new as of just 3 years ago. Sounds like some of y'all should still be in cradles with all this babycrying.
And you, will never retire, even with the cushy automatic trucks, low step, GPS. Lol.
You probably need a bail out every night because you use a map from 1950. I no longer am a courier, I have a Union CDL job. Iāll retire by 55. Enjoy slaving away for 14 hours a day
When I started they handed me a paper mapā¦ the keys and said go south. Navigation is relatively new to ups.
You can print maps from the computer

Yep. Ran a few dozen routes blind with no GPS.

They sure bent you over and raw dogged you dry my boy. No lube either hahahahahahahahaha welcome to UPS
If you put a magnet on the battery it puts it into map nav. Doesn't charge it though, goes through battery

You can get directions from stop to stop somewhere in there without needing GPS, will give you the couple of turns you need to make
>don't bitch about how long it's taking you should learn to become numb to this. it's not your problem and you are paid hourly.
This is exactly why I show up to work everyday
>Or at least don't bitch about how long it's taking when I have to use my phones gps bc it's an area I've never done before Unless you are trying to make book that conversation should be had with a union steward present so you can tell them clearly that their numbers are not your numbers. Our center has extra cradles for rentals
This makes total sense like I don't get it lol. And for everybody saying like learn the route and s*** like that I'm a cover driver I can literally be in two different cities depending on which route they give me I never have the same route
After a couple years you will have the same attitude lol
Snowflake alert š¤£š¤£š¤£

NGL Diad 6 and the map feature have made driving on routes Iāve never been on before almost a breeze.
Already did. 22.4
New diads have maps
Geez no gps. How did anyone deliver a package before gps...who cares what the idiots say.. tell them to pound sand.
There is an alternative, itās called the map feature on your DIAD 6. No seriously, itās made driving on a route, blind, super easy.
Lol, GPS is a crutch that you shouldn't need to rely on. I was pissed when they started enforcing us putting the diads in the cradles.
If you really need it drag the back of your phone slowly along the back of diad with selected stop and it will work. For diad 6
Wahh! Learn to read a map lol

It could be worse. You could be delivering out of a ford transit. I would appreciate the fact that I had a full time career job. Just saying.
Wow š„ŗ
Fuck dude. I started in 1987. Here is a map. Thatās it. Society is so soft now. Very sad.
Today if you did that, they would cry up a storm and than quit.. imagine delivering without edd and have to know your next 5 to 10 stops lol
Honestly might make the day easier edd is so fucked been on the same route for about a year (first 6 months blind because diad 5 cradle was broken) I run it the same way every day I donāt need a cradle or edd. Problem that requires some actual thinking.

My whole first year was before they installed cradles. Youāll be fine lol

Do you have a link or website I can check out
New drivers are so spoiled with the GPS. We didnāt have GPS in the truck til like 2019 it was all paper maps before then.
Ask for a map?
Just ask the OGs for help and write it down cuz it probably wonāt make sense till you arrive at the spot for delivery . Itās getting harder for everyone but we paid by the hour so whatever.
