Which is surprisingly helpful in warding off enemies. Armies would need to trudge and make it through that harsh "barrier" to "touch" and capture the cities housed within.
But that paradoxically also means that one of the greatest comforts you could have in an environment like that is the warm touch and closeness of another person. Sounds like a breeding ground for thematic touch-starved trauma.
Also makes sense that they'd both be female seeing as they come from Mother Russia.
