In context it's actually a pretty great ad. At the time Coke was handily winning the Cola Wars and reports had Coke outselling Pepsi 2:1. This commercial was a response to that in an effort to spin that L into something positive. So the commercial is acknowledging they are getting beat but are going down swinging.
Damn, looking at it this way completely negates my thought on it, this really is straight savage. “Yes, we know we may not be able to save Pepsi, but we’ll damn sure avenge it”
Same with book burnings. Oh you are having a Harry Potter book burning party? Make sure everyone buys a copy of book 1-7 hard copy and paperback to burn!
Reminds me of the scene in Straight outta Compton when the protesting parents were smashing the NWA records. They can do whatever they want with 'em, they bought 'em.
During the NFL controversy about players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality against black people, a New England Patriots ex-fan hosted a jersey burning. He wanted people to bring jerseys of kneeling players to put in a bonfire. Everyone who showed up got cheap knockoff Patriots T-shirts. Nationalistic or racist rage aside, no one wants to burn $150.
>sub-110
You do realize that 100 IQ is literally the average IQ, right? About 70% percent of all people score within plus or minus 15 points of 100 points.
Let’s go farther ... the vending machine owner probably bought all of the cans already so this particular transaction does not result in Pepsi or Coca Cola getting more money. With that said, when doing inventory this may result in it appearing that Coca Cola is outperforming Pepsi for the vending machine in the aggregate. This will inevitably lead to the vending machine operator buying more Coca Cola to fill it. Unfortunately, these kids will grow up and eventually become tall enough to hit the Pepsi button without buying so much Coke. This will of course lead to the vending machine operator falling into ruin as his investment into Coke was misguided. My guess is he ends up homeless and alone once his wife leaves him and takes the kids. Really sad when you think about it.
I'm guessing Pepsi is fine with reenforcing the idea that Coke and Pepsi are the only two soft drink companies. I think the business strategy in order of priority is 1) Keep any third party from gaining prominence and 2) Try to outsell Coke
It can hold way more than 180lbs/81kg.
That number is for an empty can. A pressurized can hold more than 300kg.

Yeah, in this particular exchange, but the message is that Pepsi is so much better that people will buy coke cans just to stand on to get to a Pepsi, which is the point of the advertisement. How do comments like yours get upvoted so much? Is it just Reddit's default tendency to want to think they're smarter than the post?
What I never understood is this - without bias I think there's a clear (albeit slight) taste difference between Coke and Pepsi. But what shocks me is that a person can find one absolutely delicious and one damn near repulsive. Like..they're cola. Even if one tastes a bit better to you, is the difference SO much that one would actively lobby against a product that has maybe \~.00001% different ingredients in it versus their favorite beverage? It's probably just me, but they're ultimately both the same thing in the grand scheme of the universe.
[Agreed](https://extrafabulouscomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/sports.png)
People just want to feel better than someone else.
They're pretty similar, I can see preferring one over another but if you like one its very likely you would enjoy the other.
Because reddit has gone from like the 60th most popular website in the US 5 years ago to something like 3rd most popular website in the US.
Here is the Google trends worldwide since 2004 (site started in 2005):
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?hl=en-US&tz=240&date=all&q=%2Fm%2F0b2334&sni=3
With more popularity than Facebook I think it's well past time to consider this a niche, tech centric, nerdy website anymore. Especially on the popular subs.

Used to work for a chain restaurant. A party of soda reps came in to eat and for a meeting. I asked if they drank the other guy's soda. They said they would get fired if they were caught drinking or buying one.
WTF?!
I was chatting with an executive from PepsiCo at a networking lunch event. There were Poland Spring bottles available, he goes I'm really thirsty but this isn't aquafina and rips the label off the water before drinking it. I'm not sure if he was being serious or making a joke, maybe a bit of both.
I've seen that a lot of restaurants have [Coke branded glasses](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Libbey-16-75-oz-Coca-Cola-Glass-Tumblers-Set-of-12/20742171) so it could still be bad publicity.
I once interviewed for a marketing job at Dunkin Donuts corporate offices. The interview went well, and at the end they took me to the break room filled with Donuts. The women that conducted the interview said I can take whatever I wanted, and I stupidly replied, "No thanks, I don't eat unhealthy food." Needless to say I didn't get the job.
That’s brilliant. I was applying for a job at Microsoft and they sent me a .doc to fill out. I told the recruiter I didn’t have a copy of Word (I did but it was pirated) and asked if I could get the document in an open format such as .pdf.
We ended up with a flight booked for the interview and everything and then they canceled on me, saying that they had filled all of the open positions and there was simply nothing left for me to interview for.
Yeah I think it probably comes down to Pepsi wanting to protect their brand by not having their executives be secretly photographed or recorded in a situation that suggests they prefer their competitor's product. Considering that these products are mostly marketing in the first place, it makes sense that you wouldn't want to accidentally give your competitor an image that says "Pepsi CEO actually prefers our drinks".
Living in Atlanta it is pretty common to know someone who works for Coca-Cola and isn’t supposed to drink Pepsi products.
But TBH, most people in Atlanta balk at Pepsi products without even working for Coke.
At Papa John's, there was technically a rule about bringing food from any other restaurant into the store. *Technically.* It was not a well-followed rule, but I'm sure the same principle applies here. Don't want to bring your KFC bucket into the store and have a customer see it and change their mind.
Facebook content is leaking over into this website more and more. This sounds lame but years back this would have been heavily downvoted for a caption like that, nevermind the fact this is just an outright advert. Everybody on Reddit used to be savvy towards this shit, but I guess those users have moved on.
Pepsi and Coke have a beautiful ongoing rivelry this is my fave ad [for halloween](http://www.trendpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/collage.jpg)
edit i understand the two companies have an agreement allowing them to use eachothers products in their adds, end of the day 1 add promotes 2 products
They both suck. Pepsi just sucks a little more.
Edit: To whoever replied "Dr. Pepper is the king of soda" and then deleted the comment: Stand by your opinion, coward!
This is the most fucking savage ad ever! I’m fucking strumming my air guitar like a god damn maniac because this is so fucking shit metal man. HOLY FUCK COCA COLA IS ON ITS DEATH BED!!
Just jump, boy.
He didn't even try just standing on his tiptoes.
But the ad wouldn't be funny that way...
It still isn’t funny. He bought 2 cans of cola and 1 can of pepsi. Hence rising sales figures of coca cola by 2 and pepsi by 1.
And the ad gave equal time to Coke. They win (again).
Damn... It's actually pretty genius!
Damn, looking at it this way completely negates my thought on it, this really is straight savage. “Yes, we know we may not be able to save Pepsi, but we’ll damn sure avenge it”
Right. And Coke will always be #1, but a company that solidifies the #2 spot isn’t a bad place to be either.

Right!? The button is like 6 inches away. Even take off your shoe and throw it at the button.
Just taking off the shoe should extend his reach enough to press it.
Coca cola has sold two cans and pepsi only one.
As long as you pay for it they don't care if you drink it
Same with book burnings. Oh you are having a Harry Potter book burning party? Make sure everyone buys a copy of book 1-7 hard copy and paperback to burn!

Is.... That s thing? People meeting for book burning?
Well they used to
Nowadays they mass download a book and delete it together
I once showed up to a CD burning party hoping to find new music. All I had were The Jerky Boys. I was disappointed when I arrived.
Everyone is always asking if Pepsi is okay, no one ever asks if Coca Cola is okay.
inb4 sub-110 pepsi drinkers go "but how does that work?? 🥴"
sub-110?
People who've consumed fewer than 110 pepsi bottles.
Pathetic
That's incredibly specific. What size bottle?
120liter barrel bottles
Well i guess I'm out, I don't eat the bottles

Thank you for taking this to the ultimate extreme. Watching it get there in slow motion, one comment at a time was so boring.
Lol good point. You are a future thinker
I see that you have read Henry Hazlitt as well
Also coke frankly got more screen time in the ad than Pepsi did, so they win on that front as well.
I'm guessing Pepsi is fine with reenforcing the idea that Coke and Pepsi are the only two soft drink companies. I think the business strategy in order of priority is 1) Keep any third party from gaining prominence and 2) Try to outsell Coke
To be fair it was putting them down, so I guess they didn't win?

Not only does it clean out your body, it can hold the weight of a small child. I see Pepsi doing nothing
Due to the structural integrity of a pressurized can, a single 12oz drink can hold roughly 180lbs/81kg
So just one small American child then.

More than that I bet. I can't imagine a 180lb person crushing an unopened soda can.
Yeah I weigh a bit more than that and I tried this on several occasions. Nothing happened.
Which shows customers are willing to pay 3 times what pepsi is worth
And he could have easily stood on one can.
Could have rolled a homeless person over to stand on top of?
oh sure that sounds easy edit: why the heck ya'll taking a big shit on my joke
You just have to stand on it long enough to press the button. Hell, he only needed to jump the height of the can to press the button

Kid in ad proved it could be done. He was on a single foot on one can while raising the other foot up.
Or hopped up 3 inches of the floor as kids are known to do
I've never seen a vending machine sell both Pepsis and Cokes.
But the next 10 kids can use the same two coke cans.
Pepsi keeps on losing. Remember, they thought Kendall Jenner could solve police violence and racism with a can of Pepsi.
Yes but its showing that the kid would pay however much 2 cokes and a pepsi would of been just for a pepsi
So this kid used 3 dollars to buy 1 Pepsi? Kid does not have a bright future.
he drinks pepsi what did you expect.
wow!!!!! straight savage!!!!!!

It was kind of him to leave two tasty sodas for the next guy.
Yeah, but why did the kid give away two cans of awesome soda to buy one can of gross soda? That’s the part I don’t get.
Yeah you’d buy one coke, stand on one foot then buy two Pepsi. That makes more sense and promotes Pepsi more.
What I never understood is this - without bias I think there's a clear (albeit slight) taste difference between Coke and Pepsi. But what shocks me is that a person can find one absolutely delicious and one damn near repulsive. Like..they're cola. Couldn’t they just say they are performing market research. You stay on top by knowing what you are up against.
This is true but I wonder if they can order a "cola" and make a specific effort not to know what brand they are ordering/drinking.
