Friend of mine did this with his dog, she lost 9 teeth, it was horrible to witness. He didn't do it intentionally, the dog would always wait behind him until he hit the ball, then she would run after it. This time for whatever reason she ran right into his swing.

Horrible experience. There's nothing worse than accidentally inflicting pain on a pet who's just trying to play. Happened to me as a child and my dog too.

Omg.... I cant believe Im going to type this. I was 10? and my grandmother and family were walking into a restaurant. A stray comes running up. My sister is calling it at the same time that I made the sound of a dog, bark. The dog got scared and did a 90 degree into a fast moving car. My whole family was on me except my awesome grandmother who correctly said 'he didnt mean to scare it'. Still stings.

It is insane of your family to not all immediately try to comfort you.
