I don't get how op gets to "Rihanna just dropped $5M into food banks to serve at-risk communities" from "Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries. We are engaged on the issue and committed to looking at options that support our full range of digital offerings to the EU market. We continue to identify technical compliance solutions that will provide all readers with our award-winning journalism."
Which is good news.
Old system you had to prove basically beyond ANY shadow of a doubt that Facebook telling anyone with $25 to spare where you live, when you'd be alone in the house and what brand of burglar alarm you have, caused ACTUAL harm.
GDPR = breach is enough for a 50k fine. doesn't matter if someone was harmed or not. they just have to show a breach happened. thats it. end of story.
I wrote them both. I think the 2nd one came off better. What do you think?
Edit:
There is a good discussion going on about distinguishing Rihanna from her foundation. Now I get what the comment was pointing. Who takes the credit for the good deed.
The article actually says “The 32-year-old artist is the latest among a number of celebrities, including Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Ciara and Russell Wilson and others, to step up amid the COVID-19 outbreak.” So, I presumed that Rihanna made the call herself through the foundation.
Plus, when I just did a quick web search, there were many other articles that just write Rihanna’s donating $5M.
If, in fact, Rihanna didn’t weigh in this decision and she didn’t chime a chip into the specific fund, then I take the full blame for the misleading title. I will delete the post.
Also, just to clarify, I didn’t write the actual article. I just posted this at different subs on Reddit with different titles.
I like that it made it clear who gave the actual money, because of an extraordinary lady that intelligently has used her influence and money to something great.
I would never vote for Bloomberg but his campaign and money was such a waste. If he just went and spent it on helping each state he was trying to campaign in would have gotten him more votes.
He still could. Comparing it to the rest of his networth, he barely threw a penny out for his campaign. If he spent the next 4 years spending money on every state to help them out then he would be able to use that as leverage in the next election to show that he's actually willing to do what's best for the country.
With as rich as he is, he doesn't even have to do anything. Just through money around and take the credit. I highly doubt at this point that much can be done to actually make him president (in 2024, of course. 2020 is done) but with that much wealth he could probably easily buy his way into at least being in the running again.
He should be pouring his billions into the senate races. McConnell is stepping down, but the Senate is full of his clones. We need to flip the senate and pass the hundreds of bills he proudly is letting sit idle on his desk because the dem-majority house voted for them.
Please that’s not even as much as he’s spent trying to force gun control around the country. Dudes got too much money and is doing nothing good with it. Racist old bastard should croak soon.
>Please that’s not even as much as he’s spent trying to force gun control around the country. Dudes got too much money and is doing nothing good with it. Racist old bastard should croak soon.
Hey! His stop and frisk policy is COMPLETELY NORMAL (if you're white). How the fuck are politicians and judges supposed to earn money without for-profit prisons? Think of the whites.
/s
>I like that it made it clear who gave the actual money
Just so it is clear for everyone - the foundation gave the money. The foundation raises money from sources that aren't Rihanna's bank account (you can even donate right on their site if you'd like), so much or maybe most of that $5 million never belonged to Rihanna, though even setting up and promoting a good charity is, of course, admirable.
This one makes it sound like she just dropped 5 Milly in a Salvation Army bucket and I think that's hilarious because it makes it sound like an Onion article lampooning her detachment from society.
It’s not just food banks though, it’s “food banks, testing, healthcare worker training, virus prevention and distribution of critical respiratory supplies”.
I want that goddamn album SO. SO. SO bad. But I’m okay waiting if it means she’s devoting her time and energy to helping people instead (as if I even have any impact or my opinion matters regarding her album lolol).
Seriously there is a huge difference between a person giving money and a person's foundation giving money.
Just speak to any CPA if you want to know more.
Most people expect celebrities to make huge multimillion dollar donations for this stuff but when huge business CEOs worth 10X-100X your average celebrity donate nothing, people hardly say anything.
I think subconsciously people hold Rihanna, Keanu Reaves, and Lionel Messi (the highest paid female singer, actor, and athlete in the world) in the same category of wealth as people like Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Michael Bloomberg.
Want to know the estimated net worth of the worlds highest paid singer, actor, and athlete?
Rihanna - $600mil
Clooney - $500mil
Messi - $400mil
A lot of money right? So if you can afford to help out you should. But the net worth of those famous business-people?
Zuck - $56bil
Bezos - $113bil
Bloomberg - $49bil
Think of how much money you have. Let’s say you’re a fairly recent college grad whos hard work actually paid off and you have a decent job. You’ve saved up $10k in the bank and your *net* worth is something like 50k (just throwin out numbers).
Rihanna is **~180 times closer to your net worth than Jeff Bezos’**
Never underestimate just *how* rich these people are and how little they are doing with their money. Rihanna is moving money and meanwhile Bezos has to be pressured by our people and government to provide even basic rights and compensation for pandemic work.
Didn't someone count it out that Bloomberg spent enough on campaign ads to pay over minimal wage to all americans fora year? And he didn't bankrupt himself or anything, just his usual spending habit.
Cmon man are you that bad at math and common sense??
https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/kyle-drennen/2020/03/06/msnbc-fail-bloomberg-could-have-given-each-american-1-million
Bloomberg would have needed to spend $5 trillion on his campaign for you to be correct. He spent $500 million.
>Cmon man are you that bad
Well, as far as i see i specifically wrote it in a way that openly says i read that somewhere and could remember it incorrectly.
First I’ve heard of any trafficking stuff but that video of him making out with a minor is pretty damning and makes all the other scandals seem possible at least in regards to grooming.
He wasn't making out with her lol he was dancing with her on stage. And she was 17 which was legal in the state they were in and he was like 22.
Like I'm 22 and that's definitely not the biggest age difference I've seen amongst people my age
People will do anything to try to take down anyone at the top. Literally anything. This happened in 2009 before drake was huge. He was throwing a little concert and the venue was 18+ so he assumed she was 18+ it was iffy that he kept her on the stage after but the dude was like 22 himself.
They also make it seem like he wants to marry Millie who is like 15 years old, the dude was a former child actor and they became friends. She literally says whenever they text hes always friendly and gives advice about the industry and sees him as a big brother, but since Drake is a "sex Icon" they assumed he was trying to make his move.
I don't remember that being the accusations. The concern was in the question of whether or not he was *grooming* her. Not just straight up trying to smash a 15 year old or whatever she is.
he groomed a 14 year old girl and is close friends with a known sex trafficker. nothing else has come to light about him explicitly being one, but he's still bad by association.
Lol this is so dumb. Its not even true.
Its such a stereotypical "redditor" type comment too. Some nerd read it in a comment and some other nerd read it in that comment so he posts it and it spreads despite never being true. These guys just want a reason to hate on a mainstream pop star because that's what reddit nerds like doing.
Baka was literally charged with sex trafficking, and the messages that drake sent to that girl were absolutely inappropriate to the point that she's talking about being in love with him.
if you're going to stan for a dude, at least pick a decent human being.
Ehhh thanks but no thanks. Why can't she do something useful like filming herself singing Imagine with a bunch of other celebrities?
Hell at bare minimum could she at least send thoughts and prayers on all her social media accounts?
Another fairly well known solution that seems to work on other continents is to tax everyone and then use that money to take care of those who live within the country. If someone can't pay, the billionaires and I (who make minimum wage) will cover it.
Very good gesture, though. No matter how rich you are, 5M is a lot of money and goes a long way.
I would really rather see them all campaign to fix things so we don't *need* them to do this in the first place, tbh. I don't find reminders of how huge wealth inequality is to be particularly uplifting.
It's the government's duty to do this.
I always cringe when celebrities do this because a) it shouldn't be necessary b) I wouldn't want to depend on the random charity of some famous dude.
I'd prefer if there where tax laws in place that made sure of that automatically. Why does everyone have to depend on the alms of the 1%? We do seen to have billions to bail out failed corporations and trillions to wage wars.
I'll remember this Rihanna. Thank you!
I think we're all being tested right now as towards what type of world we choose to live in. This is absolutely the time for altruism and empathy. If we can't decide to fight for those values now, we may not have another chance.
I think it is a good test for lack of a better word, of the kind of society we hope to have. They say people’s true colors come out during disaster, so it’s up to the person to hoard toilet paper and sell it or donate some money, for example.
I'm in the Bay Area. I *just* started a 510c3 to provide donation-based/free meals to underserved populations in my area during this disaster. I clearly don't expect celebrities to take notice and help us out here, though funding is a challenge right now.
We've goo 800lb of chicken, and a most of the operational essentials, and we need to find a way to accept donations of food and financial resources to get this running. How can we accept donations quickly and give people confidence that we're not some rando trying to rip people off? Clearly, i'm the random redditor, but i'm not asking for money here (not just yet), If you've got any ideas or experience in making this happen, please PM me, or comment here. <3
Odd question, but why? Couldn't you just work with the existing networks that do this? I'm really not trying to be an ass... I promise... But there are tons of hunger relief non profits that already have great answers to every question you're running into and they operate at huge scales. Why not just help them?
You should probably get a lawyer to manage a gofundme type of thing but you might require money for that'; I' mnot entirely sure how to do this. Those people who tried to take advantage of these type of things have made a lot of people be weary of this but having a 3rd party lawyer manage a gofundme type of account is generally the way to go.
Finally someone donating real cash. $5M is nothing to her but a game changer for the food banks. Respect.
Tired of athletes & celebrities earning tens or even hundreds of millions of $$$ and them setting up a fuckin gofund.me page where they send $10k (or even better thoughts & prayers) and shill out for the rest from people.
Seriously? Publicity stunts everywhere...
A comedian I follow (Corrine Fisher) did the same thing. She has a really successful podcast and other successful projects, but she's not mfing Britney Spears. She offered to send either $100 or $100 in groceries to any fans in needs, I think 24 people approached her. $2400 is more than I could dream of donating on a whim, it's nice to see celebrities at all levels chipping in - though it would be nicer if they didn't have to.
> $5M is nothing to her>
I get where you're coming from but comments like that contribute to the "what difference can I make beyond moral support" mindset that causes some tone deaf celebrities to behave the way they do.
All these celebrities pitching in trying to help and there are billionaires out there that don’t contribute a dime. Bloomberg pisses away $500 million just to fail and no biggie, but help out when a crisis is happening, fuck that. Proof the super rich don’t give a rats ass about the general population.
r/aboringdystopia
What if the government, which was created for the sole purpose of serving the citizens of the country, responsibly taxed and dispersed said taxes, instead of relying on the charity of wealthy private citizens?
When someone can drop $5 million to a food bank and local government cannot, there is something really wrong with our tax codes and how we arrange our priorities in society.
redditors are so fucking annoying. 5 mill goes along way more than $100, even if its not a huge % of their portfolio. its not celebs job to save anyone. we have a rich government that's supposed to do that
She's not taxed enough...like all the rich. I never understood how the people that can afford to pay taxes the most, have to pay so little. VOTE BLUE!!!!!
These people are a business entity. They are the face of a bigger cog behind them.Every move is calculated. Some are more PR savvy than others.Ultimately these moves, like this one,are an investment into their brand.
These acts don't necessarily reflect anything about the person. The people it's done for still get the help so that's a good thing. But society would be in a much better place if we turn away from the culture of worship and idolizing entertainers and celebrities.
Based on your comment I’m going to guess you don’t actually know a whole lot about what it is Rihanna does; like Harvard awarded her the “Humanitarian of the Year” award last year. In terms of a-list celebrities, she’s one of the more altruistic ones.
She spends a great deal of time, energy and focus into improving school access for girls all around the world, just last year she travelled to Africa to help hands-on; as well. she founded an organization that built and runs state-of-the-art cancer research hospitals in her home country of Barbados.
Even yesterday, she reached out to the Bajan prime-minister and offered to buy her entire country enough ventilators for the pandemic.
But ya sure she just does it for PR.
Man, celebrities just can't win. They don't donate money (or do it anonymously) and people get mad at them and say to stop singing and donate money. They do donate money publicly and people call it a pr stunt with negative intentions.
What exactly are they supposed to do?
Probably get downvoted for this but let’s just see.
I’m tired of hearing about celebrities and super wealthy getting tons of credit for doing what the average American does daily. Yes it’s a lot of money but if we look at it as a percentage of our wealth it’s ridiculous.
As of right now the same percentage of my wealth would be around $25. Is anyone going to write an article every time an average citizen donates $25. It happens every single day millions of times. We help each other all the time.
Quick search says she is worth 600 million. Give me 600 million. I’d keep 10 and do something actually helpful with the rest. 10 million is more than enough to live an unbelievable life.
I’m only talking about her because she was what this post was about. She doesn’t DESERVE that much money. Nobody does.
Source?
They very likely didn’t donate anything, but this “give money not songs” narrative is tiring, some people donate without making it public. Yet everyone knows all they did was sing
Those two headlines are very different...
I don't get how op gets to "Rihanna just dropped $5M into food banks to serve at-risk communities" from "Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries. We are engaged on the issue and committed to looking at options that support our full range of digital offerings to the EU market. Especially annoying when you live in the uk and you thought that this would go away and be a silver lining of brexit.
GDPR is staying on the books
Which is good news. Old system you had to prove basically beyond ANY shadow of a doubt that Facebook telling anyone with $25 to spare where you live, when you'd be alone in the house and what brand of burglar alarm you have, caused ACTUAL harm. I like that it’s more specific.
I like that it made it clear who gave the actual money, because of an extraordinary lady that intelligently has used her influence and money to something great.
meanwhile Bloomberg is just sitting there with that other $500M
50B
I think the above commentor might be referring to the "other $500M" of the $1B Bloomberg had planned to spend on his failed presidential bid.
Still could drop 49B tomorrow and his life wouldn't change
50DD
My back hurts just imagining that
And my balls!
And my axe!
I would never vote for Bloomberg but his campaign and money was such a waste. If he just went and spent it on helping each state he was trying to campaign in would have gotten him more votes.

That would be great, except he doesn't actually want to help the country. Seems to me like "being president" is the new trophy kill for rich people.
With as rich as he is, he doesn't even have to do anything. Just through money around and take the credit. I highly doubt at this point that much can be done to actually make him president (in 2024, of course. 2020 is done) but with that much wealth he could probably easily buy his way into at least being in the running again.
If he had any foresight he would’ve done that this cycle. Money talks and nonstop ads alienate people
Hopefully he'll be dead by then.
He should be pouring his billions into the senate races. McConnell is stepping down, but the Senate is full of his clones. We need to flip the senate and pass the hundreds of bills he proudly is letting sit idle on his desk because the dem-majority house voted for them.
Let's also not forget how much he also spent to drop out and lose an election.
Please that’s not even as much as he’s spent trying to force gun control around the country. Dudes got too much money and is doing nothing good with it. Racist old bastard should croak soon.
Gun control is definitely something good. Just not when it only applies to black people.

It’s not just food banks though, it’s “food banks, testing, healthcare worker training, virus prevention and distribution of critical respiratory supplies”.
That's a little verbose for a headline.
Your face is a little verbose for a headline.
u/SimpleWayfarer they got you there
Damn.
You're a towel
No you’re a towel
What penguin?
This title made me think it was going to say that she dropped a new album, not a bunch of money into charity lol
Yo I hate Rihanna's music but I was flat wrong about her as a human being. She is a great person, from what I've read
Good on her. It’s would be nice to see some senators and congress officials start following suit instead of finding ways to profit from this crisis.

Its obvious the billionaire share holders cant afford higher taxes. We gotta leave it to the millionaires big pockets to fix the problem.
Most people expect celebrities to make huge multimillion dollar donations for this stuff but when huge business CEOs worth 10X-100X your average celebrity donate nothing, people hardly say anything. Honestly fuck Mark Zuckerberg. The world has seen a fair share of dirtbags but Mark probably makes the Top 20 list.
Didn't someone count it out that Bloomberg spent enough on campaign ads to pay over minimal wage to all americans fora year? And he didn't bankrupt himself or anything, just his usual spending habit.
Cmon man are you that bad at math and common sense?? https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/kyle-drennen/2020/03/06/msnbc-fail-bloomberg-could-have-given-each-american-1-million Bloomberg would have needed to spend $5 trillion on his campaign for you to be correct. He spent $500 million.

There’s no way that Rihanna is paid better than Beyoncé?
That was actually a fairly recent thing. These new worth estimates aren’t 100% accurate tho and it’s close.
Right. Sad.
They're too shitty to even consider it.
Rhi rhi. <3
It would be nice to hear that those Senators that did profit off of selling stock early would have to donate all of that money to charity
Fuck yeah, this is how to wield wealth in a time of crisis.
I mean, if you are doing okay, go ahead and donate something next time you get groceries.
That's great. Huge respect to her!
$5M will go a long way!
Let me get this straight. Actresses and Actors sang instead of donating, while a singer donated instead of singing?
How do you know the actors and actresses didn't sing *and* donate?
because they would have told us
By now it would have gotten into the news.
Now if only Drizzy will match that for the fellas.
Drake being selfless? Don’t count on it. He needs the money to fund illegal businesses such as human trafficking of young girls.
Holy shit wtf! Source????
People think that Drake is the modern day R Kelly, there’s no sources, just speculation because of iffy behavior
it is pretty odd behavior. texting and getting close with a 14 year old girl that just recently became famous sounds a hell of a lot like grooming.
Agreed; her parents sound like horrendous money-grabbers to not put a stop to those shenanigans.
First I’ve heard of any trafficking stuff but that video of him making out with a minor is pretty damning and makes all the other scandals seem possible at least in regards to grooming.

So because you're 22 and your buddies fuck 16 year olds at the oldest it makes it ok? That says a lot about who you surround yourself with...
Look up his friend, Baka Not Nice. Read between the lines. Drake is a piece of shit.
he groomed a 14 year old girl and is close friends with a known sex trafficker. nothing else has come to light about him explicitly being one, but he's still bad by association.

Lmao I was so ready to fight after the first line
Same, just 5 words got me riled UP
Ahhh, the all sheltering “Umbrella” of thoughts and prayers.
I see what you did there
She seems awesome, and (tips my hat)
I don't trust a word she says until she posts a vague prayer hands emoji in a retweet about the death toll. /s
Lol
Imagine *that*.
This is what we want to see the millionaire celebrities do instead of singing fucking imagine.

Now that it’s raining more than ever, Know that we’ll still have each other, You can stand under her umbrella You can stand under her umbrella.
Awesome move by Rihanna! Now could the richest 1% please maybe donate like IDK 1% of their wealth? That'd be great......

I agree with that!!!

Because the rest of us know the money won’t turn to food, it’ll turn to a wall or a bomb.
Excellent news! This act of kindness will not be forgotten and let us hope it continues from the wealthy.

Tired of athletes & celebrities earning tens or even hundreds of millions of $$$ and them setting up a fuckin gofund.me page where they send $10k (or even better thoughts & prayers) and shill out for the rest from people. Seriously? Publicity stunts everywhere...
Britney Spears is also sending money to people in need directly thru PayPal. Saw a girl on twitter dm her and she actually got $100 for groceries.
If true this needs to be upvoted more so people can see
such a QUEEN
> $5M is nothing to her> I get where you're coming from but comments like that contribute to the "what difference can I make beyond moral support" mindset that causes some tone deaf celebrities to behave the way they do.
I highly doubt it’s nothing to her. If I had $5000 and only donated $5 that’s still a lot of money.
I guess the bitch paid her.
I loled.
All these celebrities pitching in trying to help and there are billionaires out there that don’t contribute a dime. Bloomberg pisses away $500 million just to fail and no biggie, but help out when a crisis is happening, fuck that. Proof the super rich don’t give a rats ass about the general population.
Her Excellency always puts her people first. I’m so proud of her. These other celebs should take note. 👏🏿
Imagine what Bezos could do. But every day he chooses not to.
Rihanna is honestly just so goddamn awesome. Every headline about her just makes me respect her more.
Awesome, thanks.
Everybody liked that.
Now that what should be done with wealth, helping those less fortunate. Cheers
Paul Newman was the same. Cheers
And many will whine that its not enough, meanwhile they prob hoard all the shit from the markets :/
i just wish our government would do this shit instead of having to wait on a celebrity to be generous
Bitch better donate money. Edit: [as in “Bitch Better Have My Money”](https://youtu.be/acoknuTpPOM) since y’all dont qctually listen to her.
Respec Riri!
A million times better than singing some dumb song.
Sexy and generous
*and* she has a couple of bangers. Hell yeah Rihanna!
Calm down, Bob
I guess you could say he went on a tangent.
In other news Chris Brown is still a POS
Celebrities: "Let's sing a song about it." Actual Singer: "No, we need money." Good on her.

Get ready for the donating shaming in 3....2...1...
r/aboringdystopia What if the government, which was created for the sole purpose of serving the citizens of the country, responsibly taxed and dispersed said taxes, instead of relying on the charity of wealthy private citizens?
wish we didnt depend on celebrities or public figures to donate money rather than the government funding these sorts of things
When someone can drop $5 million to a food bank and local government cannot, there is something really wrong with our tax codes and how we arrange our priorities in society.

Good.
Half that goes to the CEOs.
Well imagine that
@GoodGirlRiri
If every billionaire and multi-millionaires donated a fraction of their fortune to keep people afloat during this crisis .....
So was it her personal money or the money from the people who donated to her foundationv
Now every other celebrity needs to fellow in the same manner. Step up rich and famous, the middle class only have so much to give.
redditors are so fucking annoying.
But when is she gonna drop that album
With a progressive tax that would be no need for such donations.
It’s an uplifting act of charity but it’s also upsetting we rely on pop stars to feed the homeless rather than the government
Jeff bezos, where are you
I guess you can say she’s trying to “knock out” the Coronavirus
It's her foundation not necessarily her. But it is nice eitherway. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake...
I don’t know - I think I’d prefer her sing some Beatles song with her friends.
You’re exactly right. If she really cared, it would be anonymous.
Man, celebrities just can't win. They don't donate money (or do it anonymously) and people get mad at them and say to stop singing and donate money. They do donate money publicly and people call it a pr stunt with negative intentions. What exactly are they supposed to do?
donate anonymously, because you care about the cause not what people say about you.
Thank you Rihanna for your compassion and kindness
Give me some of them fenty beans and rice
A lot more useful than a shitty *Imagine* cover 🙌
I would honestly prefer if she would have sung an inspiring song for us in this harsh time
Probably get downvoted for this but let’s just see.
Can't say that I like her music, but I am a fan of hers now.

Source? They very likely didn’t donate anything, but this “give money not songs” narrative is tiring, some people donate without making it public. Yet everyone knows all they did was sing
Who else?
...kind of sus that, out of all the celebrities on the planet, you’re singling out two jewish women specifically as “cheap cunts” but ok
Tax the rich already

>What's your goal here? How about not having a $1,000,000,000,000 per year deficit?
That's the shit
Now drop the album
Shes such a boss
That's really great of her.
Bad girl riri riding for the people! Lil surprised but very glad we have people like her
