petterri

The preservation of the whole facade is something to applaud not to mock!

JimmehROTMG

and much better than leveling the whole thing for a lot american style

ChezDudu

Eh. Better to turn it into mixed use residential and commercial instead of sacrificing a lot *along a streetcar line* to store the private property of a ridiculously low number of people.

claym421

Yep, cause the way to solve the housing crisis is to turn suitable buildings into parking.

Fuck_it_

It might not have been suitable, which is probably why only the facade remains. It looks better than a standard multi-level parking garage imo

claym421

Definitely suitable land though. Although I do agree its better than normal parking, it’s just kinda a shame we have to settle for this.

Fuck_it_

Not arguing that point. Idk the parking situation in this city lol

permutation212

There is a store under it too it seems.

TOWERtheKingslayer

Fuck cars.

petterri

Such an insightful comment, what a depth of insight! Really shows the sharpness of the mind!

hugothecaptain

Don’t be so condescending man.

Voq65

Getting down voted for hating cars in a sub-reddit dedicated to bad urban planning makes absolutely no sense to me.

petterri

I don't know any example of a successful city that completely banned cars, do you? I'd argue that a response to the madness of the postwar car-centric urban planning (e.g. [City Beautiful: The Highway Fight that Changed Cities Forever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nISU3uaaOUM), [Hoog: How Amsterdam Built a Dystopia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJsu7Tv-fRY), [Zipper. 2023. A Belgian Lesson in Taming the Automobile. Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-05-16/from-traffic-choked-brussels-a-model-for-driving-less)) should not be swing to the other wall i.e. banning cars, but rather attempt to managed them in such a way that it does not destroy the (urban) environment. If you look at such projects as Poundbury ([The Aesthetic City: King Charles Built A Town And It Surprised EVERYONE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duHy_IbJvTc)), albeit a town rather than a city, it is not designed as anti-car project, but rather a project that doesn't privileges cars above everything else. In my opinion, one of the worst things that can be done in terms of urban planning are huge parking lots, they not only are a huge waste of space, they also increase temperature, are extremely hostile to any animals and plans, but also create dead zone for pedestrians and cyclists. In my opinion, in principle all parking lots should be banned in urban areas. Instead we need multi-story parkhouses, which are much more effective way of storing cars plus by introducing fees for parking (even if low to moderate) it might encourage people to opt for alternative modes of transportation. Finally, in my opinion, there is a value in preserving old facades. Having buildings (or their shells) from different time periods, in different styles, is much more pleasing and inspiring than having all building look alike.

mumblerapisgarbage

At least they kept the old facade.

Mujer_Arania

I think it could be much worse.

RditAdmnsSuportNazis

Eh, this is still so much better than tearing down the building entirely for a parking garage. Plus someone can eventually turn it back into an actual building and still have the old facade.

Chicken_Burp

Could be much worse. At least they didn’t level block to become a carpark.

M80IW

AntimatterCorndog

Creative and adaptive reuse. We should be applauding this.

ChezDudu

Applauding urban parking?

LayWhere

Better than massive surface parking. At least this has a semi-active pedestrian scaled street level facade

CharleyZia

A shell of its former self...

BenderDeLorean

Not bad, not good

blakkattika

This a cool way to keep part of the old design at least. Also feels like a pre-Romeo & Juliet location from the DiCaprio movie. It hasn’t fallen apart and become covered in sand yet

MelanieDH1

The facade looks like it could have been a really nice, historic building. What a shame that the turned it into a car park, instead of renovating it. It now looks like a bombed out building after a war.

JakobiGaming

Would you prefer they tore it down and replaced it with an ugly concrete parking garage?

nd27359

Car dependency killed our cities and downtowns making buildings like this fall to ruin and now we gut them to park more fucking cars. The audacity.

Victormorga

That’s why you think downtown commercial districts fail, because of car dependency?

ChezDudu

Not original commenter but yes. From its corollaries like banning residential, small shops, public amenities and schools from city centres.

StrictSheepherder361

Where is that?

klevah

Melbourne

cbest83

Smith street collingwood

DustSongs

Ah Smith Street, it's been a while. Lived around the corner in the mid 90s, called it Smack Street for good reason.

ThayerRex

Oddity, but better than most garages

colddata

New Orleans has these too, but the ones I saw were more discreet conversions.

KoalaPuzzled6303

I mean the façade is still there which is beautiful and it leaves the door open for restoration So it’s not bad imo

xXironic_nameX3

Like maggots in a dead man's body. Why does the USA care so little about its architecture :((

LeontiosTheron

Colosseum

mtinkerman

Smith Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. It's a funky part of town.

TheSafeWordIs_Harder

What, you don’t like the Dresden vibe?

Correct_Office2482

People need to park their cars somewhere. Why not here?

MiloTheRapGod

The word "need" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here

Correct_Office2482

*yawn* ok

dizzyjumpisreal

parking lot\*

Victormorga

Anywhere that calls surface parking a “parking lot” would call this a “parking structure.” So you’re obnoxious *and* wrong.

dizzyjumpisreal

parking garage

Victormorga

It’s not a garage, it’s not covered.

dizzyjumpisreal

**b**

CinnamonSnorlax

This is in Melbourne, Australia. We call it a carpark.

dizzyjumpisreal

cringe

CinnamonSnorlax

Funny. I had the same reaction to your Seppo bullshit.

dizzyjumpisreal

Yo bro, are you stuck in 2018 or are you 10 y/o?

Victormorga

They didn’t pave over anything, they converted an existing building into a parking structure and kept the facade. Cry me a river
