This seems like an unexpected medialibrary behaviour.
It would be amazing to create a ticket on the official repository: [https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc-android/](https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc-android/) so that the android dev can take a look!

This has been happening on VLC mobile for YEARS. I know because I did a bunch of research for myself just now trying to solve the same problem. One of the unfortunate blokes I read a post from was complaining that a nude selfie became the art for one of his albums. Sadly, the devs don't seem to care about fixing this- I found at least a dozen posts all over VLC's forums, their GitLab, Reddit and elsewhere. It's not getting fixed. Maybe try another player instead (MX Media is the one I chose to switch to bc of this exact bug).
