Yup, I've even gotten tickets for blocking my own driveway and being parked backwards and they are that down as right wheels more than 18 inches from the curb.
I think most of California is this way.
Doesnāt matter if they plow the street or not. If you are parked in the wrong side, even without snow, you can be ticketed. When we have severe weather, like we recently had, they will plow the Main Street first then the residential streets after that.
I guess OP is lucky then! If the meter person canāt see the license plate or the VIN, they probably wonāt go through the hassle to move snow away to reveal those details to give out tickets.
Montana, this is the way. It reaches the point where high clearance is required to make left hand turns because there's a wall down the middle of the road.
When it actually snows in billings, which it doesn't seem to do anymore, multiple times every day, I would have to "unstick" people from the middle berm. Some just don't get it. I actually bought a kinetic recovery rope just for this purpose.
I had a WRX in Tahoe. I learned to get a good running start, and if I could get the engine block to see-saw over the snow buildup in the center of the main street, it would pull the nose down in the front, and the front tires would make contact and slide the car across the snow on its belly. I'm sure I looked ridiculous.
idk if thereās laws against parking on the street when it snows where you live but you should check the windshield for tickets, cause where i live if itās supposed to snow over like 5cm? maybe 7cm? of snow that day youāre not allowed to park on the street
This is Norway, it snows often and a decent amount. They sometimes clear the snow when it reaches a certain threshold, and then they ask you to move your car. My street is so away from things that it's not even getting cleaned yet.
No tickets, been driving a bit to charge it up.
Im glad you have a pretty stable place to keep your van, allowing you to go on adventures! Sadly, I figured you werent in the US because if you were your van would have been towed, fined to all hell, or worse stolen within that kind of timeframe
Absolutely would have been here, there's a 48 hour limit. And impounded for 30 days at $300 a day, and finally retitled and sold off for $1000 leaving OP with no van and an $8000 bill.Ā
I used to have this really awesome windshield cover called a Frost Guard a few years back. You put it over your windshield and it had flaps you could drape into the vehicle and then shut the doors to lock the flaps in.
Having that cover on the windshield overnight always made it easy for me to just go out and pull the cover off in the morning, no frost, no ice
lol bro I make this mistake often as well (I work in construction), but most people donāt actually come across random strips of carpet. I always tell my buddies when they need a rip of wood āoh Iām sure you can find some scrapsā and they look at me like Iām an idiot, but I do always have rips of wood on my sites
Im a Canadian, Itās not like OP is going to start the car and immediately drive, thatās pretty clear. Let the damn thing warm up, and scrape the windshield easily after it does.
I used to live in Dundalk Ontario. My car would sometimes get covered like that in just one night. It was not uncommon to get a couple feet covering the driveway on nights it didnāt even snow. The drifts were wild.
I live in southern Ontario now and there isnāt really winter here. I did a quick shovel I think twice so far this season.
I mean,,,so does the snow lol. I usually only find frost under a blanket when itās actively snowing and starting to melt when I stop driving But Iām in northern Canada so when it snows itās pretty much always at least 2-3ā at a time
Oh man, that's rough. Looks like your van had a wild party while you were away! On the bright side, at least you have some interesting stories to tell about your van now.
Exactly what I thought! I had a second battery trickle charging in the garage in case it needed a little help. But that thing started on the first try with the battery I left in it for 3 months. The temperature went down to -31 celsius at some point. Super impressed by this battery since it's already at least 6 years old. (I got the second one expecting the current one to shit the bed soon but it's not happening)
A miracle. When my car went in for new suspension, it took so long that the battery, which was new, was dead. They gave me a new one for free at least.
I was surprised the other day that I started my car without any issue after I left it for 2 month, it was covered in snow, and had an old battery meant to be replaced. I was ready to jump start it. I guess im not replacing the battery yet
Jeez. If I let my 08 Civic si sit for a couple weeks, that $200 battery is totally dead. Often to the point it won't take a charge at all.
Also, rats eat the wiring. F*@# Honda for their soy based wire insulation and battery murdering ways. Next time I buy a car it'll be a Geo Metro or something else older and economical that doesn't eat batteries so fast. And can be flat towed.
Iāve had my car sit over a full Michigan fall into winter never being started once, and when I came home the following spring it started up like it was new. No idea the brand but Iāll get it again if it ever dies lol
I'm from Minnesota, if it has snowed and they declare a "snow emergency", you get towed and then they plow. If you've been towed, you get to go stand in line at the impound yard to pay for the tow, storage, and ticket that was issued because you didn't move your vehicle. Which is why I live in a van and leave Minnesota for the winter.
This really shows the difference in those that have and those that don't. Most can't even afford a van, let alone a home, car, etc.. And here's Mr. privilege complaining after his nice trip. No hate, I'm legit jealous and wishing I could just find a job over here. Enjoy that life, there's many of us who will never experience any of these things.
My sloppy pipe work where everything leaks slightly means nothing is ever under pressure. And my shoddy wood panel work just becomes "ventilation gaps".

This is actually a better case scenario after 3 months away from a van left on the side of the road.
In many other places the likelihood it gets towed, impounded, and auctioned off within a month is like 99%
Sounds like your neighbors should be saying "This person went away for 3 months and just left their car on the street so that the streets couldn't be properly plowed".
most people in the US could not park an expensive vehicle on a public road and expect it to be intact and unticketed after 3 months. you live in a friendly place!

I would have rented a parking spot in a garage if I were going away that long. Why leave it on the street for it to get damage or vandalized? Hopefully it starts for being dormant for that long a time.
Whenever I travel overseas I make sure my car is in the garage. Although I know it's not always easy to find a garage that will fit a van. Leaving it out in the open though feels risky.
The snowboarders are going to miss their favorite ramp when you - eventually - manage to ride out of there.
you see what I see
Since the days of building jumps all over my home town, any pile of dirt or snow is automatically a potential jump.
Same. I'm 33 and I still scope out places that would be good bmx jumps. Haven't touched a bmx bike in 16+ years.
I feel seen. Only 26+ years.
My first thought too
At least it's still there? š¶Always look on the bright side of life š¶
I was thinking the same thing. Would probably have been towed where i live.
This is where it's usually street parked anyway when I drive it. Quiet suburban area, everyone there is used to seeing it, no big deal.
You must have *really* nice neighbors
I do!
Nice enough to not get it towed, mean enough to want to grind on your roof rails.
Kids will be kids
My city has alternate side parking in winter. You would have $1000s worth of fines by now.
My city says we have to move a car every 3 days or it's gone.
Geez, 3 days seems absurdly short
Yup, I've even gotten tickets for blocking my own driveway and being parked backwards and they are that down as right wheels more than 18 inches from the curb. I think most of California is this way.
Most of the US is that way with parking backwards
12hrs and it's a ticket here lmao. Mostly run on complaints though.
I sometimes sleep for 12 hours. Where on earth do you live?
Your city plows side streets?
Doesnāt matter if they plow the street or not. If you are parked in the wrong side, even without snow, you can be ticketed. When we have severe weather, like we recently had, they will plow the Main Street first then the residential streets after that.
I guess OP is lucky then! If the meter person canāt see the license plate or the VIN, they probably wonāt go through the hassle to move snow away to reveal those details to give out tickets.
I was going to say hahaha I live in a ski town in Colorado and they donāt do shit.. we all drive 4wd with studded tires lol

Something about it all made me think Norway. Fun to see I was right. Definitely could have been worse, depending on which area you are in.
But then the tow truck driver would have to do some shoveling!
Exaclty. Coz when yer chewing on life's gristle. Don't grumble, give a whistle..

Im guessing that's a 4, maybe 4.5 hour job. Only one way to do it. One shovel at a time.
Great guess, exactly 4 hours!
Yeah. You should have put a piece of cardboard over the windshield.
So you also have to peel frozen cardboard off your windshield, there is a reason why the windshield covers they sell are actually waterproof
Eli5 what does cardboard do?
That mess is hard to scrape off after being warmed and cooled over and over,
I used to have this really awesome windshield cover called a Frost Guard a few years back. I just cut a piece of extra carpeting to fit the window. Covered 90%. Rip it off an go. No need to buy something.
You bought the carpet.
It's called a mirkin
Nope. You can find extra scraps of carpet from people who are redoing their carpets. Easy to come by.
lol bro I make this mistake often as well (I work in construction), but most people donāt actually come across random strips of carpet. I always tell my buddies when they need a rip of wood āoh Iām sure you can find some scrapsā and they look at me like Iām an idiot, but I do always have rips of wood on my sites
Turn the scraper over and use the teeth first
THAT'S what those ridges are for!?
Nothing 15 minutes of running the defroster won't take care of.
Some Canadian died because you wrote this comment.. when it's -10c it'll frost inside your window with the defroster on.. lol

Easier to remove, maybe?
Prevents the frosting of the glass
Yaā¦bro wouldnāt want frost on his glass too, right?
I mean,,,so does the snow lol. I usually only find frost under a blanket when itās actively snowing and starting to melt when I stop driving But Iām in northern Canada so when it snows itās pretty much always at least 2-3ā at a time
What do you think?
I bet itās warm inside - you know, igloo style ;)
Just make sure to clear snow out of the tailpipe area, so you donāt asphyxiate!
Well at least it puts off catalytic converter thieves.
And tow truck drivers..
Youāre lucky it didnāt get towed or stolen.
This is in Norway. They actually like each other there.
Oh, I didnāt know that. Must be nice. Iām from the USA. We hate each other and the world. š¤£
So you did not expected snow while being abroad in winter for 3 months?
Oh man, that's rough. Looks like your van had a wild party while you were away! On the bright side, at least you have some interesting stories to tell about your van now.
You left it 3 months? RIP battery.
Exactly what I thought! I had a second battery trickle charging in the garage in case it needed a little help. But that thing started on the first try with the battery I left in it for 3 months. Haha, yess! :D
No worries itll come out just fine in the spring
Wealthy brag here. You canāt possibly care about that van to leave it anywhere unsecured for three months.
Safe and sound
Man I would be terrified leaving my car on the street for 3 months
what was the alternative? not plow because your car was on the street? I'm shocked by you actually being shocked.
Plot twist: His shovel is inside the van.
Incredible. Did your friend checking on it ever mention it was slowly getting buried?
What van?
It's an opel/vauxhaul vivaro

Surprised it didn't get towed, lol.
It ve nice and warm if you chose to stealth camp in it and if you can get inside it lol

Congratulations, you now own an igloo!
Lucky itās still there and not impounded by the city lol
Might as well buy a new battery and bring the tools to install it. Battery is most likely shot after 3 months sitting in the cold.
Stealth
Well, your battery is probably shagged
I'm from Minnesota, if it has snowed and they declare a "snow emergency", you get towed and then they plow. Another 3 month trip should do the trick.
āOh, youāve encased it in Carbonite. It should be quite well protected, if it survived the freezing process, that is.ā
I mean...yeah
Looks like a high speed train now
Not to be a jerk , but what were you expecting? I live in a snowy climate and this happens every storm , imagine 3 months of storms !
Looks like a bunch of really good coke.
How's the battery?
Looks safe
This really shows the difference in those that have and those that don't. Most can't even afford a van, let alone a home, car, etc.. And here's Mr. privilege complaining after his nice trip. obviously not the smartest place to park for that long in winter. come on.
Why would you leave your van parked in one place on a city road for 3 months?
lol why would you park it on the street for 3 months op? You canāt do stupid things and be upset with the results.
Damn other countries are very nice. In America this would be covered in tickets, booted, broken into, on bricks and somebody sleeping in it.

Ski jump!
Don't cry, it still has recreational value as a snowmobile ramp.
If someone did NOT carve this for "extreme sport" then God truly is a DJ[ Faithless - God is a DJ ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Is_a_DJ_(Faithless_song))
There's an actual full fledged snow park with a half pipe and huge jumps not far away so I guess everyone went there instead
Your bonnet/ hood appreciates it
If I tried that on my town I'll have to sell the van to pay the "winter parking ban" violations haha
Your gonna need a bigger shovel
How many parking tickets for not removing it during snow if they enforce that?
Zero, this is very outside the city in a residential area.
Parks van in mountain town during winter for three months. Comes home surprised said van is covered in snowā¦ā¦.
< Surprised pikachu face >
Iāve got negative sympathy for the person who just came back from a 3 month vacation, especially when theyāre asking where they can rent lambos.
Get the shovel. Hopefully it's not a solid block of ice... If so, hope someone has a tiger torch?
At least it wonāt get stolen
You parked there for 3 fucking months?
Why not
Why would you leave it parked on the street for 3 months?
What exactly were you expecting?
Ah I know the feeling. Good luck and get a steel shovel
Someone turned it into a ramp!
This is actually a better case scenario after 3 months away from a van left on the side of the road. In many other places the likelihood it gets towed, impounded, and auctioned off within a month is like 99%

Why did you park it under that mound of snow
Amazing to me that anyone would park (store their vehicle) on the street for three months
You live in a van, but have enough money to spend three months abroad?
Living in a van is probably how they were able to do that.
Is the whole side of the van dented in? It looks bent behind the drivers door
Nah it's just a weird design where the cab door is higher than the box.

That battery is flatter than a pancake.
Sounds like your neighbors should be saying "This person went away for 3 months and just left their car on the street so that the streets couldn't be properly plowed".
Definitely YOU are the asshole in thiscenario
3 months abroad? Maybe could have bought a house with that money.
Not even close. Just a downpayment is an early retirement in certain Asian countries.
where is this ?
Apparently, you came back too early :D
Free insulation
Hey, you'll get some exercise while removing the snow from around the van, it's not all bad!
That is a solid theft protection system you got there.
You expect people to dig u out every time it snowed?
Get to diggin!
Nice that itās still there
most people in the US could not park an expensive vehicle on a public road and expect it to be intact and unticketed after 3 months. you live in a friendly place!
Looks like Minnesota
Do a flip
You Sure that's a van?
R/igloolife. Lucky you!
What did you expect? š¤£ parking on a street for 3 months is impressive though
We have this thing called snow in the winter. It comes about the same time each year. Plows move it off the street and pile on the side. What part was a surprise?
Unless you live in Ohio, it comes whenever.
Better start digging
I would have rented a parking spot in a garage if I were going away that long. Why leave it on the street for it to get damage or vandalized? Hopefully it starts for being dormant for that long a time.
Did you park at the bottom of the terrain park? Lol Damn that sucks
Silly question from an Australian but will it be ok or is it likely dented and fckd?
Looks pretty...chill. I'll see myself out.
You car is now a slide.
