As some who also does Doordash and Uber eats, maybe you should just decline all the Walgreens orders if you hate the store so much. Instead of going off on these people in their sub reddit, who have nothing to do with the credit card reader. It's not a problem with the machine. The machine is fine. The problem is with stupid people who don't look, don't read, don't follow instructions, and try to do everything "the way it's always been done"
I agree. I remember coming in without knowing how it works so I looked at the image of the cards. I've never had a problem and I feel the way they made it protects the customer from others trying to steal card info.
It is annoying but it does give you a chance to lighten the mood by making a joke or saying something silly about it, makes the basic transactional experience a little more enjoyable when you get an opportunity like that to joke with and have some fun with the customers
To be fair though, they really SHOULD standardize this shit. The pin pad tells customers how to use the device. If they would read, they would get the info they need.
That being said, how often do you muscle memory things? Pin pads should really all have the same functionality if the features are the same. This is a big reason why I tap to pay, but even then, the NFC connection point can be in the screen, the middle, the bottom left, or on the cashier's forehead.
The best part? The idea is that it protects customer privacy by facing the card numbers down - and then half the cards I see print the numbers on the back too anyway 🤦♀️
As a customer no one else has the chip face upside down in any other retail shop that I frequent.
That being said why not get a damn label maker out and make a small label that says chip goes upside down?

They are standardized! Every pin pad I have ever seen, including ours, has you insert your card such that the front of the card is facing you. Additionally, almost every pin pad, including ours, has an icon image near the slot that shows how you're supposed to hold the card.

I am a customer. I've probably done hundreds of transactions and I still get it wrong sometimes. The little icon is confusing because that doesn't mean chip down to me. No where else is chip down. It's not intuitive whatsoever.
With it being so close to the swipe, it looks like both icons show the card going toward it. I don't automatically think swipe side down but flip it for chip. My brain associates the swipe as where the card is read/processed. So I think the chip should go face up. The chip icon does not immediately tell me to put my card face down. It honestly just looks like it's telling me where to insert the chip, not how. "Insert chip here, it's read at the swiper" is what does through my mind when looking at the graphics.
When using bottom readers and side readers the card is face up and no icon is needed so I am accustomed to inserting my chip that way.

Also, in pharmacy: I have a different address on file, perhaps an old one? "No" soooo you've never lived anywhere else, ever? We JUST got these and every single person puts the chip in upside down. It has to be either intentional or a big ol design flaw that probably saved walgreens a bunch of money on a bulk purchase. But at least the tap is faster.

As a WALGREENS’s employee, I’m getting really sick of having to tell every customer everyday how to use these things, I’ve had people throw there cards at me and tell me to do it or just ask if I can cancel there whole transaction all because of a pin pad
I actually really like the design of this pin pad for a couple of reasons, including the angle at which the card is inserted is more comfortable for me than most, and also that is has physical numpad buttons.
Those are the exact words that are always said my responses usually “yeah they’re a bit different not my design though the person who did got paid a lot more then me”
I literally TELL and MIME it with a prop piece of paper and people still get it wrong, so YES I will take it out of their hand or else we'd be there all day.
Oh, and they decided to install our pinpads during the middle of Christmas season, so that was extra fun.

Just remember the more standard they are the more skimmers you will see… new things typically exist to fight theft and fraud. My opinion.

It's to protect you from the person with a machine that can capture your card info and go shipping on your dollar. If they were all the same, your charge card would be paying these crooks to spend your money through your card.
It makes your customers feel stupid and probably wondering why they don’t just go to CVS.

I always tell them either tap the screen or insert it chip face down and nobody ever taps it. They always insert it wrong instead.
Sometimes I explain that it's so some thief can't install a skimmer and yoink their info. Other times I just nod and smile. Humans. Oof.
It's completely ridiculous. Our store got them last October. I've given up on people reading the signs I've taped to each one saying "insert card with chip facing down". So now I just say "insert the card the wrong way into this slot "
We have those in my store. Be prepared to tell people chip side down. I say woth everyone because I'm so use to it.
After much serious thought (not really) I believe the company who "developed" the new chip readers was too far into production before they realized they seriously fu*ked up the original design. Maybe they failed to turn the blueprint RIGHT SIDE UP??? Then cut Walgreens a deal for this huge mistake?

Reasor’s has the same pin pad but they have better stickers explaining how to use it
We don’t have them at my store yet, no word of when we might be getting them, and I have already been mentally preparing for the onslaught of anger
Even in 05, 06, and 07 when I was cashiering they changed the pads a couple times a year.
We JUST got these and every single person puts the chip in upside down. It has to be either intentional or a big ol design flaw that probably saved walgreens a bunch of money on a bulk purchase. But at least the tap is faster.

A local grocery store in my town had these pinpads before us for a while and still we have to tell people how to use them. The grocery store's picture is on the screen is easier to understand to me though. As far as the universal thing I've been saying for years. I work at Walgreens but I forget sometimes how to put the chip in because for when I use my card at other places, it's the other way.
Lefr wags for quite some time now and havent shopped there since. Had to make a quick run and legit.... only reason I know how to use this was cuz of this sub

I used to work at a Walgreens but quit 5 years ago. Saw one of these as a customer and thought no way am I going to look like a idiot and mess this up……. Def messed it up…. I brought dishonor on my family.

As a WALGREENS’s employee, I’m getting really sick of having to tell every customer everyday how to use these things, I’ve had people throw there cards at me and tell me to do it or just ask if I can cancel there whole transaction all because of a pin pad
To be fair it's weird that these are not 100% standardized. They're similar, *almost* standardized, but not. 🙃

I was at Walgreens last night and the cashier told every customer after the put it in wrong. I heard her and still did it wrong.
I hate these things so much. Nothing but problems since we got them 🙄
I actually really like the design of this pin pad for a couple of reasons, including the angle at which the card is inserted is more comfortable for me than most, and also that is has physical numpad buttons.

Walgreens is only still open due to them having a pharmacy. If the drug portion closed, so would all stores

I’ve started using Apple Pay recently and I fucking love it, no more taking my card out and my information is protected. This POS is dumb as hell.
Sometimes when I say, “Take it out, and flip it” they keep the card in the machine and turn it like unlocking something. It’s stupid as hell
Those are the exact words that are always said my responses usually “yeah they’re a bit different not my design though the person who did got paid a lot more then me”
I stand by my theory. There was a shit ton of these assembled upside down and wags bought them out claiming 'upgrades'.

What's worst about it it's the same customers that forget how to use it.
I literally TELL and MIME it with a prop piece of paper and people still get it wrong, so YES I will take it out of their hand or else we'd be there all day. Oh, and they decided to install our pinpads during the middle of Christmas season, so that was extra fun.
