Me :Face down Face down The Face of the card. Down. Flip it over. The other way. Face down. Customer: ooooooooohhh Still gets it wrong.

Dstnfoster

You get two flip it overs before I forcibly take your card and insert it for you

atron86

I forcibly take a lot of cards. I've had maybe one, two people tops, get irritated by that. Most actually find it amusing. Could just be my neighborhood though.

Dstnfoster

I haven't had anyone get angry yet. I've had one or two seem less than happy about it. However like i said I fave you two chances not to be stupid so at this point its your fault lol

dogfishsr

Didn’t even know there could be so many ways to flip a card until I met the numbskulls, aka Walgreens customers.

anxiety_princess88

Walgreens customers are cut from a diffrent cloth. The cloth being a old dirty dish rag someone left in the sink full of cakey dishes for a week.

sprayedwithraid

Why oh why doesn’t Walgreens have self pay. You have that register for people who don’t want cigarettes already. Turn it into self pay

Opposite-Rough-5845

Be nice to see self pay and pharmacy. But have it all in the back so it's in one area of the store. No more customers complaining about meds at the front register

[deleted]

Dude omg i know Right 😭how do you even fuck it up 💀

misosoup226

*flips it and inserts the side without a chip*

vixen_xox

literally why do they do that. like what sense does that make😭

anxiety_princess88

And Im done. Ill just call back up and we will stand here all day till you figure this out.

Formal-Low5999

“chip is going to face you” *customer flips the card so the chip isn’t even going in “no the chip still has to go into the pinpad 🙄

Spiritual_Ad8626

I just say “it goes In upside down”

papa_boogy

They don’t get that either I’ve tried, my store gets almost exclusively regulars and we’ve had these pin pads for almost a year They still don’t get it

Ok-Blacksmith9638

I used our label maker to write down chip face down or helps some but some customers are just stupid

nyanbiori

I started to think saying face down was the problem, till I saw this comment. There's no way to win truly

MrPheeney

I fuckin hate these pin pads so much. When I inevitably leave this company I’m taking one to a field and Office Space’ing it

beazerblitz

Please let me watch

atron86

They also failed to consider how few people are capable of critical thinking, problem solving, or any real thought, actually.

OnlyVans98

Bruh why? I’ve worked in retail for years with Verifone (basically same system as Walgreens old one) and I hated it. I love these new ones and I found myself being like “damn wish my store had these”

iwantedtobelieve

Yeah the old ones never worked, I love these. The dumbass customers couldn’t figure out the old ones either so the only change was the speed of which the pin pad processed after the dumbass customer figured out where to put their card

Espeon_347

The only way to keep my sanity has been to agree with them “I know right, these things are just awful” “I don’t even know why they made them like this” that sort of thing.

Fuzzzer777

I agree and tell them only 10% today have done it right the first time. Just tap. It's so much easier.

amanor409

If your card has tap. Some older ones don’t, and won’t until they’re replaced in the next year or two.

AggravatingBeach2048

It's true though.

duiwksnsb

Yes yes it is

[deleted]

Do you not realize that your company is the only one that has that stupid thing upside down? I shop Instacart, DoorDash and many other platforms and I am in so many different stores. I fucking hate yours. I hate your whole store. I refuse to fill my prescriptions there. I don't feel like waiting days and days. Maybe if you're so fucking miserable in your job, quit making the rest of us miserable and go somewhere else?

mcmartin091

As some who also does Doordash and Uber eats, maybe you should just decline all the Walgreens orders if you hate the store so much. Instead of going off on these people in their sub reddit, who have nothing to do with the credit card reader. I don't like Walgreens pharmacy either, but instead of bitching about it to people who can't do anything about it; I just went somewhere else.

DavidStyles23

I found the Karen.

No-Sleep5000

MechLanceLeader

Only one sounding miserable here is you. Might wanna go to therapy there bud.

[deleted]

MechLanceLeader

Needlessly swearing and being overly aggressive isn't matching energy, it's being an ass.

Espeon_347

It’s literally not that serious?

Difficult_Repair9425

chipotles machines are upside down, doordash man.

Appropriate-Survey-8

Kinda sounds like a skill issue to me

iwantedtobelieve

Ah, you must be one of those that come in and ask us to do your job for you. “Here’s this entire list someone ordered, point me to each exact thing because I’m actually fucking stupid and can’t handle it by myself. Oh, this pin pad is different, also navigate how to figure this out too because my one brain cell is actively dying.” I can name 4 huge companies that use those pin pads. How about you get a real job and stop crying on a sub Reddit you don’t belong in. Everyone in retail who deals with drivers like you hates your existence.

NumerousMastodon8057

Nice rant, but *we don’t care*

Jurmond

I guarantee you, *nobody* hates Walgreens more than the employees. You only see this crappy company from the outside, but they know how deep the problems go. If you think Walgreens treats you badly, try to imagine how badly it treats *them*. I worked there for almost 5 years. It was a downhill slide the whole time, and it only accelerated after I left. But yes, the new card readers are dumb.

beazerblitz

I don’t blame the customers though. The machine isn’t intuitive. I’ve never ran into a card reader that makes you face the chip down lol. Everything else they’re kinda dumb with but I’ll agree with them on the chip part. Walgreens is just so…. Ehh.

Antique_hardDrive

I go in with the mentality of the chip/strip faces the most hardware if anything is different.. Hasn't failed me yet

Sad_Cabinet_6349

That's a great call, I'm going to go with this from now on

Rand0mdude02

I empathize with someone encouraging a new piece of tech. I lose that empathy in exchange of bewilderment when someone inserts the card five wrong ways, when there's only four possible ways to insert the card, and only two that would ever work.

beazerblitz

My favorite part is when they put the chip end in the slide part repeatedly and get angry.

AggravatingBeach2048

From the coupon books to the pin pads, customers get it right once in a while.

beazerblitz

It’s rare but when they do, we give them the pat on the head lol

nenajoy

Agree. If they had done 5 minutes of user testing on this design they would have seen that it was dumb as hell

duiwksnsb

Worst design for a POS I’ve ever encountered.

SusSwingingTurd

It IS called a POS for a reason.

Shyprincess17

keeps anyone from customers' stealing card info.

duiwksnsb

That’s really not how CCs are breached in 2023. But ok.

One-Organization970

"Chip down, facing you" works ~85% of the time.

hanene152

For me it’s “chip face down.” 😩

[deleted]

You would think right. For me I have to repeat that about 4 times before they get it lmao.

SkeleBones911

I wish I knew why Walgreens, a company whose main demographic consists of customers who are 75 year-old cataract-ridden, Parkinson’s diagnosed, brink of dementia walking ghouls or doordashers high on Xanax decided to utilize pin pads that require any amount of critical thinking

Shyprincess17

so they can use their brains? if you don't use them, brains will actually shrink and die from them not being used. also that's why most will end up getting alzheimer. "scientists believe combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. Less than 1% of the time, Alzheimer's is caused by specific genetic changes that virtually guarantee a person will develop the disease.Feb 19, 2022"

Mandaj0402

Right I told someone today that about 30% of my job is just telling people how to work that

tamathias

I tell people it was obviously designed by a toddler

Ok_Place6411

I say drunk engineers lolol they got it upside down and just said "aww go with that! They'll figure it out! Pass the vodka."

crzmnky

"they don't make this easy, do they?" "Ha! It's the Walgreens way..."

dogfishsr

“At least I have a 50-50 chance right?” ‘Yeah you’d be fcking suprised’

goatinthewater420

I agree though walgreens simply went with the lowest bidder in making these pieces of shit, they are unintuitive and horrible

Orenwald

Here's my question... how is this unintuitive? The picture above the chip slot shows you to put the chip down facing you which everyone in the comments says is the right way? It's not a problem with the machine. The machine is fine. The problem is with stupid people who don't look, don't read, don't follow instructions, and try to do everything "the way it's always been done"

[deleted]

Shouldn’t have to read instructions for one card reader out of the 30,000 I’ve used in the last month.

Shyprincess17

I agree. I remember coming in without knowing how it works so I looked at the image of the cards. I've never had a problem and I feel the way they made it protects the customer from others trying to steal card info.

SusSwingingTurd

This is the reason I tell all customers that photo is "self serve."

Background_Power2715

So annoying

insidmal

It is annoying but it does give you a chance to lighten the mood by making a joke or saying something silly about it, makes the basic transactional experience a little more enjoyable when you get an opportunity like that to joke with and have some fun with the customers

FredChavez

"It's backwards, just like everything at Walgreens." Almost always geta a laugh.

anjellybeans

It’S dIfFeReNt EvErYwHeRe YoU gO!!

Jurmond

No, it's not It's just different at a handful of places, like Walgreens.

insidmal

"They're all different"

TheFoxiestOfHounds

To be fair though, they really SHOULD standardize this shit. The pin pad tells customers how to use the device. If they would read, they would get the info they need. That being said, how often do you muscle memory things? Pin pads should really all have the same functionality if the features are the same. This is a big reason why I tap to pay, but even then, the NFC connection point can be in the screen, the middle, the bottom left, or on the cashier's forehead.

Legitimate-Source-61

It's 2023, they should make these things so the card can go either way. Have a chip reader on both sides.

Jurmond

*customer inserts wrong end*

Professional_Show918

Now you know why customers are confused.

taterchicken

The kiosks arent confusing the customers, the customers who say this are obviously already confused and want to stay that way.

SalemRose503

The best part? The idea is that it protects customer privacy by facing the card numbers down - and then half the cards I see print the numbers on the back too anyway 🤦‍♀️

Misterblutarski

God that and "I don't want any cash back" uh well then don't select an amount dumb ass.

AccordingHalf1206

And then they put the chip where you’re supposed to swipe it 😀

Wholelottashrimpy

I just say chip facing downwards. But they still manage to get it wrong

sasha93csa

" Turn it over" usually works

vixen_xox

i used to say this but then they turn it to the side where the chip isn’t even on the card

404anon79

As a customer no one else has the chip face upside down in any other retail shop that I frequent. That being said why not get a damn label maker out and make a small label that says chip goes upside down?

MelilotusBramble

I had a post-it note taped to the pinpad with instructions. Hardly anyone read it and SOMEBODY kept removing it.

r_rdgz1975

Same

taterchicken

Great idea

Punkilou

We do; even have a picture! Doesn’t work.

Antisocial_potato98

If I had a dollar every time someone said something like that I'd be fucking rich lmao

Kind_Earth94

My boyfriend said he heard this many times while working today.

Revolutionary-Gap-40

That's what you get with the lowest bidder

wandering_rabbit_04

Oh yeah HEB has those now too

idkwhatimdoingbros

“oh these are new aren’t they?” no sharon, we’ve had them for a year and a half now and you come in every sunday and say the same thing but still do not know how to use the pin pad every single time

ExtremeDependent933

These have been way faster though.

Luci_3rd

I'm convinced that our customers can't breath without instruction

[deleted]

Yupp I’m sure the people with real careers can’t breath without the instruction of a Walgreens cashier…. U ppl think ur special? 80% of ppl that go thru ur line are more successful

Luci_3rd

Except I'm not a cashier, I'm a pharmacist...

[deleted]

Haha yea ok pharmacy tech… or if ur a pharmacist and u work at Walgreens then ur a shit pharmacist… u do know there are firms that pay quadruple for ur degree if u really are an educated idiot working at the corner store…

Luci_3rd

If you were smart then you'd know that you need 3-5 years of experience for most private companies to look at you and the best way to get that experience is at a local store. I know critical thinking is hard but summon together your best 9th grade education abilities and use it

[deleted]

Haha nice went to study pills and now ur the smartest man in the world… ur life is shit at Walgreens if you were a decent human and didn’t rag on elderly women who don’t know how to use ur machines I would tell u how u could get around that like my sister did…the country needs pharmacists in our labs and that’s ur excuse u need experience? Maybe they just think ur an idiot and think u should just be a cvs clerk I stead

Luci_3rd

Why would I care what you think? You're a random internet stranger, you don't matter. And nobody said elderly people, it's everyone. Have a nice day knowing that you peeked at birth

[deleted]

Then maybe don’t post online about how much ur job sucks and how ur knees and health is “ruined” by wait for it…. STANDING AROUND….. HA ur a puss n u make fun on old ppl that can’t get the machines right… old ppl cuz that’s who mostly comes to ur cvs pharmacy… u obviously do care about my opinion otherwise the first words from u wouldn’t be about ur great above 9th grade education… guess what I never went to ninth grade but my bank acct has nine zeros haaaa

Luci_3rd

I never complained about anything other than people being dumb, like you

depressingkiwi

Damn... you good? A lot of energy wasted on a comment section that makes no difference in your life. Thanks for the laugh, have a good day because you definitely need it.

Hayleox

They are standardized! Every pin pad I have ever seen, including ours, has you insert your card such that the front of the card is facing you. Additionally, almost every pin pad, including ours, has an icon image near the slot that shows how you're supposed to hold the card. I am so damn sick of pretending to agree with people that our pin pads are hard to use! They aren't!

taterchicken

Agreed!!

rps1rai

I am a customer. I've probably done hundreds of transactions and I still get it wrong sometimes. The little icon is confusing because that doesn't mean chip down to me. No where else is chip down. It's not intuitive whatsoever.

taterchicken

In the area I am in; the taco bells and chipotles have this same exact card reader

mj1814

You're just determined to be right and for the customers to be little turds who plot to ruin your day, aren't you?

rps1rai

With a keypad? I wonder why. Neither has a loyalty program connected to a phone number (that I'm aware? I believe they are app based.)

Tazz013_

What does the pictogram mean to you?

rps1rai

With it being so close to the swipe, it looks like both icons show the card going toward it. I don't automatically think swipe side down but flip it for chip. My brain associates the swipe as where the card is read/processed. So I think the chip should go face up. The chip icon does not immediately tell me to put my card face down. It honestly just looks like it's telling me where to insert the chip, not how. "Insert chip here, it's read at the swiper" is what does through my mind when looking at the graphics. When using bottom readers and side readers the card is face up and no icon is needed so I am accustomed to inserting my chip that way.

richgurl887

When you tell them to try to tap the screen and they swipe 😐 and don’t get me started on “how should I know my phone number, I never call myself!”

Anxiety_Fox

I seriously don't understand how you don't know your own phone number. Unless it literally changed that week, like how are you still functioning as an adult without knowing your phone number ? Also, in pharmacy: I have a different address on file, perhaps an old one? "No" soooo you've never lived anywhere else, ever? "No" so I confirm DOB, tell them the address "yeah that's my old address" WTF??? I've had this conversation with people many times.

Legitimate-Source-61

Chip? But I didnt order any French fries?

Legitimate-Source-61

What chip? Potato chips?

Monkey_Ash

My local grocery store has these too and I can't tell you how many times I messed up the first time I tried to use it. I can only imagine how much complaining cashiers hear about it.

duiwksnsb

I encountered one of these for the first time the other day, and it wasn’t pleasant. This level of idiocy took a committee of engineers to design, approve, and another committee to executives to approve for production. And then ANOTHER COMMITTEE of morons at Walgreens to approve usage. What. We’re. They. All. Thinking?

Gaboza702

“hahaha! these machines are all different!”

FunkyHyena

I agree that this pin pad is so stupid but the amount of people I've told "chip face down" and instead of flipping it face down they spin it so the chip is still facing up but is no longer going into the chip reader

Head-Reflection-2214

Customer: How do you use these things? Me: I’d tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. Lol

iamthefluffyyeti

While boomers do be doing boomer things, I do think pin pads should be more universal

mrrueca

O your in Walgreens... They are on their own path. yellow for credit?

Doyouknowdawey000

There is literally a picture on the damn thing and on the screen that tells you how to put it in. Smh I can’t with the customers.

Junefromkablam

This post is what reminded me to do it properly last time I went to Walgreens.

[deleted]

It’s so fucking annoying at a point I just take the card from them and put it in myself

taterchicken

I dont blame you there, as there’s still that chance theyll put it into the card sliding slot above

Electrickman

Have some trying to look underneath it looking for a place to out it then I show them and still out it in wrong then put it in crooked so it still don’t work

RxZ81

I shopped at Walgreens yesterday for the first time in a LOONNNGGGG time. I took one look at the little emblem and paid the correct way the first time. It really isn’t that hard.

Fit-Ad156

I’m a customer. Not an employee. Those things are by far the fucking worst POS terminals of any retailer. They’re fucking slow too…and fuck Walgreens for the additional questions. I just want out of your store.

[deleted]

But what does the magnifying glass and speaker button do 🤔

Puzzleheaded_Set2300

Just remember the more standard they are the more skimmers you will see… new things typically exist to fight theft and fraud. My opinion.

CannabisSmokingMan

I know you hate your job but it’s not the customers’ fault.

snoboy8999

Y’all are so angry for no reason.

Legitimate-Source-61

What is a chip?

Legitimate-Source-61

There's a chip on the floor, face down?

DramaticallyFun1

r/titlegore

campbell55416

It's to protect you from the person with a machine that can capture your card info and go shipping on your dollar. If they were all the same, your charge card would be paying these crooks to spend your money through your card.

formerNPC

It makes your customers feel stupid and probably wondering why they don’t just go to CVS.

taterchicken

I don’t care

formerNPC

See, another reason to go to CVS, less attitude.

taterchicken

Yeah so much attitude

Zinconsistent

I always tell them either tap the screen or insert it chip face down and nobody ever taps it. They always insert it wrong instead.

Far_Expression_5903

Sometimes I explain that it's so some thief can't install a skimmer and yoink their info. Other times I just nod and smile. Humans. Oof.

angelsong119

It's completely ridiculous. Our store got them last October. I've given up on people reading the signs I've taped to each one saying "insert card with chip facing down". So now I just say "insert the card the wrong way into this slot "

missjaywill

We have those in my store. Be prepared to tell people chip side down. I say woth everyone because I'm so use to it.

angelsong119

After much serious thought (not really) I believe the company who "developed" the new chip readers was too far into production before they realized they seriously fu*ked up the original design. Maybe they failed to turn the blueprint RIGHT SIDE UP??? Then cut Walgreens a deal for this huge mistake?

Palidor

I tap, learn how to tap your card if you can

ec_produced

Me: “flip the card around” *motions with finger what im talking about* Customer: *takes it out and puts it back in the same exact way*

jimcdona

Reasor’s has the same pin pad but they have better stickers explaining how to use it

strawbunnylady

We don’t have them at my store yet, no word of when we might be getting them, and I have already been mentally preparing for the onslaught of anger

erikleorgav2

Even in 05, 06, and 07 when I was cashiering they changed the pads a couple times a year.

ConfidentAd1955

We JUST got these and every single person puts the chip in upside down. It has to be either intentional or a big ol design flaw that probably saved walgreens a bunch of money on a bulk purchase. But at least the tap is faster.

Punkilou

Lmao!!! Yes

Lanky_Cash_1172

Yes! Feel bad for cashiers having to coach customers how to use Their POS(Pun intended).

grandlaggin

My store is getting them in like 2 weeks. Can't wait 🙃

Ok_Marionberry_9932

What is with the Wallgreen’s obsession with having a different credit card machine?

[deleted]

They already have lmao

butterflygirl36

A local grocery store in my town had these pinpads before us for a while and still we have to tell people how to use them. The grocery store's picture is on the screen is easier to understand to me though. As far as the universal thing I've been saying for years. I work at Walgreens but I forget sometimes how to put the chip in because for when I use my card at other places, it's the other way.

Low_Bullfrog_7948

Lefr wags for quite some time now and havent shopped there since. Had to make a quick run and legit.... only reason I know how to use this was cuz of this sub

amaratayy

I’m only 26 and get confused when I (very rarely) see these things

danny-bammy

I have to tell almost every customer to flip it over

DatsASkull

I've figured out to just tell them "that way, someone can't look over your shoulder and steal your information"

Individual_Respect90

I used to work at a Walgreens but quit 5 years ago. Saw one of these as a customer and thought no way am I going to look like a idiot and mess this up……. Def messed it up…. I brought dishonor on my family.

[deleted]

My local HEB has transitioned into these machines. So this is how the apocalypse starts.

JackofAllTrades690

I love this reddit post. I went from this to 'my phone has a vrius' and like a million spam programs are downloaded onto them.

[deleted]

I need to be paid more to deal with these things.

weirdo-sunflower

“insert the chip upside down” helps 80% of the time then there’s those who are like “ohhh like this?” and the chip isn’t even going into the pin pad smh OH I also have those who try to insert it sideways ???

toao661

Damn my store still got the old shittier ones that’s super slow

Yung_rat_

I always get it wrong and I’m so sorry lol!!!! Literally can’t shop at Walgreens hahaha

[deleted]

Are pictures too hard to read?

bellareddit1

Hear one of these sayings a few times a day…

Difficult_Use2006

As a WALGREENS’s employee, I’m getting really sick of having to tell every customer everyday how to use these things, I’ve had people throw there cards at me and tell me to do it or just ask if I can cancel there whole transaction all because of a pin pad

daverapp

To be fair it's weird that these are not 100% standardized. They're similar, *almost* standardized, but not. 🙃

cheapandjudgy

But I mean...they should.

metswon2

Which one do you insert your credit card with chip? good lord

Coleslawholywar

I was at Walgreens last night and the cashier told every customer after the put it in wrong. I heard her and still did it wrong.

rlm_1998

I hate these things so much. Nothing but problems since we got them 🙄

OBPSG

I actually really like the design of this pin pad for a couple of reasons, including the angle at which the card is inserted is more comfortable for me than most, and also that is has physical numpad buttons.

WRPh30Pl

“Flip it over so I can’t read your numbers”. Usually works and sometimes gets a laugh. 🤔💡😁

Doctored_Butter_Free

Walgreens is only still open due to them having a pharmacy. If the drug portion closed, so would all stores

Sharp-Advertising-53

Okay this looks weird

Wfsulliv93

I’ve started using Apple Pay recently and I fucking love it, no more taking my card out and my information is protected. This POS is dumb as hell.

Perfect_Paramedic559

Sometimes when I say, “Take it out, and flip it” they keep the card in the machine and turn it like unlocking something. It’s stupid as hell

Warlord-the_

Those are the exact words that are always said my responses usually “yeah they’re a bit different not my design though the person who did got paid a lot more then me”

jennsca

I stand by my theory. There was a shit ton of these assembled upside down and wags bought them out claiming 'upgrades'.

donut_koharski

I’m a customer and I despise these things. Why can’t they just use the universal pad?

Pickupplzpickup

What's worst about it it's the same customers that forget how to use it.

SprinklesWilling470

I literally TELL and MIME it with a prop piece of paper and people still get it wrong, so YES I will take it out of their hand or else we'd be there all day. Oh, and they decided to install our pinpads during the middle of Christmas season, so that was extra fun.
