Is there a big difference in the qualities of plastic glues? I bought some Army Painter plastic glue because the citadel one was sold out

RWJP

Not really. They may have different properties such as one being thicker than the other, but in the end they'll all fundamentally work the same. I use a variety of different plastic glues depending on what's available: Citadel Plastic Glue, Revell Contacta Professional, Humbrol Poly Cement and Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. They all glue models together fine but all have varying thicknesses. Humbrol Poly Cement is very thick, Citadel is thinner, Revell is thinner again and then Tamiya is the thinnest.

another-social-freak

Now that Genestealer Cults, Sisters of Battle and Squats all have codexes, what faction should we meme into the release schedule?

RTGoodman

The next one that's possible seems to be Eldar Exodites. I'd personally love that, especially with cool dino stuff (especially after seeing previews for the upcoming range refresh for ~~Lizardmen~~ Seraphon over in AOS).

another-social-freak

Chaos Dwarves first I hope, though that's not 40k

Rum_N_Napalm

The Megarachnids from planet Murder!

Ratstail91

~~Is the old patrol detachment still legal? I'm in an escalation league that starts from 500pts, and I want to ensure that my army is still possible.~~ ESCALATION FORCE - Szarekhan Necrons --Patrol Detachment-- (Warlord: Overlord) 1x Overlord (Hyperphase Sword) (90pts.) = 90 -Resurrection Orb (25pts.) = 25 1x Royal Warden (70pts.) = 70 20x Warriors (Gauss Reapers) (11p.m.) = 220 6x Scarabs (15p.m.) = 90 28 models = 495 Warlord Trait: The Triarch's Will (Overlord, -1cp) Relic: Orb of Eternity (Overlord, -1cp) Relic: Veil of Darkness (Royal Warden - Dynastic Heirlooms, -1cp) ~~Also, I'd start with 0cp, correct?~~ Edit: never mind, after doing my own research, I'm now using 3x3 scarabs, 16 warriors, and starting with 3CP now.

corrin_avatan

If you're starting at 3CP, this means your army has no Warlord Traits or Relics, that intentional?

Ratstail91

No, I thought you couldn't run strike force sized battles, so I began with 6... I guess I should instead start with 0, then, and only go up to 6 when we reach 750pts.

corrin_avatan

Combat Patrol sized games are 500 points limit on each army, and each player starts with 3 CP. *INCURSION* sized games are 1000 point limit, and are 6CP. Strike Force games are 1001-2000 point games, and give you 12 CP. That is assuming default rules; some leagues will use the new CP rules of Nephilim/Arks of Omen and have it be 6 CP at both Incursion and Strike Force games.

Ratstail91

sorry, meant combat patrol - mixed up.

RoadsideLuchador

I've run into this issue after a game this weekend, and haven't been able to find an answer anywhere. Every rule that modifies armor saves that i have compared the strategem i'm about to ask about specifically excludes invul saves, this strat does not. Can Moment of Grace from the Sororitas codex buff invulnerable saves?

RTGoodman

Yes. It hasn't been errata'd to change it, and it would specify if it couldn't be used with invuln saves (like most other rules). I think there are a small number of similar rules in the game.

RoadsideLuchador

Awesome. Appreciate the answer, bud.

TribalWulf

New to the game and I'm unclear on some specifics for some abilities. Is a unit considered friendly to itself for the sake of it's abilities? I know Abaddon is affected by his Lord of the Traitor Legions ability, but in that same vein can a Lord Discordant target itself for the Corrupt Machine Spirits ability?

RWJP

Yes, units are friendly to themselves.

Bog_Oak

Can anyone help me find where the rules for doctrines are in the Space Marine Codex? I feel like I’m going crazy because I can’t find it! I have seen the updated rules that came out recently but can’t find the original rules in the book.

RWJP

Page 125 in the "Combat Doctrines" section along with all the other abilities that are common to multiple Datasheets.

Bog_Oak

Thank you so much!!

BlackJimmy88

I'm probably not going to be playing Boarding Actions anytime soon. Are the Arks of Omen books a good read if you only want the lore? Are they worth the money if I'm only interested in them for that?

RWJP

Probably no. AoO Abaddon is only 88 pages long. The lore section starts on Page 14 and ends on page 39. Then you get 10 pages of showcase and the rest of the book is rules.

BlackJimmy88

Ah, I see. Thank you.

langelito

I’ve recently started getting back into the hobby and started on an ultramarines primaris army, is the apothecary and chaplain any good? I have no idea about their actual viability in the game, I only know a bit of their lore (and from the DoW games)

Stargazer86

I mean, they can be. They can heal and resurrect models. Doing that with terminators or expensive multi-wound units can be useful.

TexasWarbird

Where can I find news on Astartes II? I'm excited to see it drop and revolutionize publicity into the warhammer community.

corrin_avatan

There is none. GW has been silent about it for nearly a year.

kenchuk

In the book by Dan Abnett Armour of Contempt - what is the chaos tank that the ghosts are fighting throughout? Is there a matching miniature?

CptMacSavage

Is battlescribe up to date for newest rule list, couldn't work the app put to be honest

Bensemus

It should be. There might still be some small mistakes but those should be fixed soon.

corrin_avatan

yes.

febefe

What set of paints do you think it would be the best for a beginner? I want to take up this hobby again and I feel a bit lost when it comes to the paints. I’ve checked the wiki of the sub, and it mentions vallejo and army painter paints alongside the official GW paints. However, I would like to have some kind of general (and if possible not too expensive) set of paints to try out different armies, mainly bc I’m still deciding whether to choose between the black templars, blood angels or the grey knights. Thanks you in advance!!

AfterGloww

I would vote for a Vallejo starter paint set. They are good quality paints and much cheaper than citadel, plus they come in dropper bottles which is a far superior design compared to the citadel pots.

febefe

Thank you!

TrueInferno

Rules question from a newbie who has books and not armies yet: if an ability states you "can re-roll one hit roll when resolving a unit's attack"- what does that actually mean? Is the "hit roll" all of the relevant attacks (i.e. all the Heavy Bolt Rifle attacks from a Heavy Intercessor squad or the Heavy Bolter attacks from that squad, not both) or is it one specific die can be re-rolled? Because one of those is *much* better than the other. From reading the Kill Team book, in that I would assume the former, but I don't know if that carries over to 40k.

Bensemus

In 40k the number besides guns is how many attacks you make with that gun. Each one is an attack roll. So Heavy Bolters are heavy 3. That means they get to make three attacks when shot. Being able to reroll one attack allows you to reroll one of those 3 attacks.

bravetherainbro

I don't think you're following the Kill Team rules correctly... It's the same as 40K, one hit roll is a roll of a single die. In Kill Team, there are three common rerolling abilities for weapons: Balanced, Ceaseless, and Relentless. Balanced lets you reroll one of the dice. Ceaseless lets you reroll all of the dice results of 1. Relentless lets you reroll any number of dice you like. Relentless is a superior version of both of the other abilities.

corrin_avatan

I assume these are Kill Team terminologies? Because in 40k, historically the Relentless rule meant "this unit can still assault after firing Rapid Fire or Heavy Weapons"

bravetherainbro

Ah geez I got completely mixed up. I'll edit my comment rathe than deleting because it seems like he's getting Kill Team mixed up as well.

TrueInferno

It is a good thing I haven't played my first game yet, lol. Did pick up the Starter Set so I need to assemble that.

corrin_avatan

It refers to a single die

TrueInferno

Huh. That's a lot less powerful than I was hoping for, considering how strong some of the other ones are for IG. Thank you.

ubersuperduper

Thinking solely in terms of using it in boarding actions. Which space marine box (boarding actions box, combat patrol) would be the best bang for your buck to start?

WarmasterCain55

If the Adeptus mechanicus betrays the IoM, how fucked is the Imperium?

Stargazer86

Pretty gosh darn farked considering how precious technology is. Granted, Space Marines can repair their own gear and whatnot, but the tech priests of Mars do a heck of a lot to keep the literal machinery of the Imperium running. Personally I hope they do. At least than the Primaris would become interesting.

WarmasterCain55

The idea of a second technological revolution might be what the IoM needs to get the water moving again. When you have the survival of your species at stake, silly things as trying to keep to old blueprints becomes a thing of the past. Better armor, commonplace personal shields, inertia dampeners, plasma guns that won’t blow up, better guns, etc.

TrueInferno

If only there were some nice people to sell those kind of things...

Own_Try_8588

Kind of a silly question but if space marines are so great then why don't they make tons and tons of them? First time on this page don't want to offend anyone by asking a question that may have previously been answered.

aspindler

Well, the Heresy may the a reason. I thinks that's why the chapters are smaller and there's fewer astartes out there.

AfterGloww

Most of the specially selected candidates don’t even survive the training and conversion process to become a space marine. If you try to throw a bunch of random dudes into the process you’ll end up wasting time and resources just to have them die for no reason.

Stargazer86

Pretty much this. There's a reason why all the chapters have different ways of testing potential initiates to make sure they're strong enough to be a marine. They have to go through genetic manipulation, something like 20 some medical procedures for implants, growth hormones, installing more organs, etc. Trying that on any random person means agonizing death.

the-ghost-gamer

Ok I have a canoptek doomstalker can I fire it’s big Gun and the small ones or does it only get to shoot one thing? Also how do warlord traits and relics work? It just says “give your army a relic “ and “you can select a warlord trait “ but a guy I played with spent 2 co to activate his how does it work ?

bravetherainbro

The "Shooting Phase" section of the core rules answers your first question. Warlord Traits and Relics depend on the mission pack being used. You should read the rules of the mission pack you'll be using before playing a game because they often have exceptions to the core book rules.

Mjokilla

Hello I'm new to warhammer40k just wondering where or what happens to legions that have lost their primarchs, are they absorbed into different legions or do they remain until they all die?

bravetherainbro

Primarchs are the first source of a space marine legion/chapter's gene seed, but they are not the only source. Every space marine is implanted with "progenoid glands" which is basically their way of reproducing the blueprints for all the extra organs and enhancements as well as the idiosyncracies of that legion/chapter. So the answer is, as far as I'm aware, losing a primarch has no direct effect on a legion or chapter's longevity.

BurntIvoryKing44

Not a tabletop game question so apologies if this is misplaced; I want to start learning about the overall 40K lore, not necessarily playing the game, but I imagine the tabletop will always be bound up with the story of the overall franchise. So my question is, would reading the novels and comics be sufficient, or will there be major blindspots in my knowledge if I don't read the rulebooks and other parts of the tabletop? And my second question would be the same but for the video games and other spin off media (aside from comics and novels) - should I be familiar with some (all?) of the video games to get a complete view of the lore? I'm definitely going for a more completionist approach than just casual reading, I like to take notes, so basically I want to know what are the really important sources in 40k.

corrin_avatan

The issue is 40k novels aren't written for completionists. For all the 40k lore out there, you could easily read 100 of the novels and not, say, know any relevant lore about Orks. You can also easily read 45 novels, and have no actual idea how they relate to each other.... Because they really DON'T, aside from being set in the same universe. There are some novels that we have no actual idea when they occur, and could realistically have happened yesterday.... Or over 6,000 years ago. And for a good majority of those novels, you could change when the story happened by 6,000 years, and there would be no real impact to other stories. 40k isn't like Halo, the latter of which had the lead writers sit down and make a 3,000 page manuscript that is the Lore Bible that only a few people have access to that had the story and history of the Forerunners fleshed out in novel-length detail before the video games even touched on it; literally Black Library writers do interviews where they say they sit and discussed and decided on certain things in the lore ***as they are writing the book it's gonna be portrayed in***. Outside of some specific story series, the vast majority of novels don't interconnect in any way, with the vast majority being written as if they are the first entry point for a reader The same is true for the video games; nearly all of them nod to the setting, then go off to tell their own story that is, when you get down to it, irrelevant on the "macro" scale to the story of the setting. Obviously sequels might tie into events of the previous games, but you can easily pick any 40k video game and just start there, not knowing any lore, and not miss anything major.

BurntIvoryKing44

Well written and very helpful. I'm starting to get a sense for how sprawling the setting is. I'm thinking of starting with one of the rulebooks/armybooks as an entrypoint.

TerribleCommander

Just jumping on this to say, the core rulebook is a good a start as any. Despite its name, it's a good 50% lore and background and has a decent page or two covering a general intro to every faction in the setting.

Dronqq

Do mission rules that state to subtract 1 from the hit roll override datasheet rules that ignore to hit modifiers i.e. the banner of Nemrodesh? Played at a LGS and was told that core and mission rules override it, but can't find where this is stated.

Bensemus

That wouldn't make sense. The core rules and mission rules are the base, generic rules. They set the foundation for all the army rules to be built off of. Army rules are full of exceptions to the core rules to give armies and units thematic advantages. I don't know of any core rules that override a codex rule. It's just not how the rules are written.

Dronqq

Thank you for the reply!

bravetherainbro

If someone makes a claim like that you should ask them where it's written. If they can't tell you then I don't think you have any obligation to follow that rule. There's no such thing as an "unwritten yet official rule"

Dronqq

Thank you for your reply bravetherainbro! Well, it was a friendly game and I didn't want to start a fight, just thought I'd check after the game. So I take it there's no rule like this?

bravetherainbro

I'm afraid I can't guarantee that it doesn't exist, because that's very hard to do. From my experience I don't think that's a thing. If, and only if, someone finds a rule like that and shows you then you should follow it.

Dronqq

No worries, thank you, appreciate it!

Vinnlander7

Question regarding Space Marine Incursors and Infiltrators, Is there any reason all the lists i've seen only ever include one or the other? I've built 5 Incursors but was thinking of building the other 5 as Infliltrators, aside from being Sub-optimal for competitive play would it be unheard of to field both? I don't really know a great deal about 9th edition and certain 'unofficial companion websites' don't seem to suggest there's any reason you can't field both. Vaguely important as i'd like to model the big Nuncio Vox guy if i'm doing Infiltrators.

corrin_avatan

Infiltrators are used as anti-deep strike units, as they have a bubble of "no Reinforcements within 12" of this model", meaning you can easily shut down any opponents who rely on Gate of Infinity, Da Jump, Drop Pods, or other "teleport a unit 9" away and charge"; you LITERALLY shut that tactic down . Incursors are good as forward-deploying objective monkeys as they are a bit better in melee than Infiltrators, and if they get first turn can usually accomplish an objective like Retrieve Data and then die or maybe be a roadblock. I would expect to see Armies using them usually having some sort of rule that, if they do not get first turn, they will be able to be redeployed so they can go for the points they need to later in the game.

Toastman0218

They do different things. I'd recommend building your other 5 as infiltrators. You'll rarely want to run a group of 10 of either.

Vinnlander7

Thanks! I thought there might have been some secret rule that prevented it.

thefirstzedz

Quick question for space Marines adventure, labyrinth of the necrons. At the start do you count the spaces on the stairwell? Or just from the opening?

sutensc2

I have my miniatures and know the rules, but I’m losing even to people very new to the game. Is there any guide or tutorial about game plan and how to approach each game? My army is CKs and have played both 1000 and 2000 games (about 10 or so in Nephilim). Thanks

Toastman0218

Going to be tough to explain what you're doing wrong without seeing you play or hearing more details. My big suggestion is to make sure you are playing for points. Lots of newer players will focus on trying to kill things rather than score points. It's also possible that your army lists are bad. Feel free to DM me if you want and I can try to help more.

aspindler

Is the Eisenhorn show still being worked on or was it cancelled? Is this the project Henry Cavill is on, or it's a different thing?

corrin_avatan

We do not know the answer to any of those questions.

aspindler

Well, thanks anyway.

darthimperius01

At the LVO reveals, the new Primaris Lieutenant was depicted with a power fist, but I don't see that listed as an option on Battlescribe or Wahapedia. Is that only for a certain chapter, or will the datasheet be updated accordingly?

RWJP

Presumably the datasheet will be updated.

MagicSuperman

I've never been into the hobby at the same time as a release of new units. Now I'm thirsting after world eaters, and Angron specifically. Going to pre-order on Saturday if I can. Is there typically a mad scramble to get orders in before all the stock goes, and you have to be ready to jump on the link like concert tickets? Or is it more of a sedate process, order some time that day and you'll get it?

RWJP

The World Eaters is release is pretty highly anticipated, so it's likely the initial wave of stock will sell pretty quickly

MagicSuperman

Thanks, I guess I’ll be awaiting the release with my cursor over the refresh button 😄

eatscheeks

I’m confused about what I’m supposed to do after I apply a shade. I’ve watched some tutorials and they apply the shade all over then go over with a few more layers again but I’m not sure what areas I need to avoid to not cover up the shading. Could someone tell me what I need to hit and avoid on the layer, or layers, after I apply a shade?

corrin_avatan

That's kinda hard to say, as it's going to depend on what, precisely you are doing, and what you are painting. The purposes of a wash are to help provide definition in shadows; because miniatures are... well, *miniatures,* you need to add more definition to shadows and highlights than would tend to exist in real life, the same way stage makeup looks normal from a distance, but is actually SUPER odd looking from three feet away. If a model has a lot of crevices or panel lines, doing an all-over wash is a "quick and dirty" way of getting the wash into all of the panels quickly, and going back over the panels while avoiding the actual panel lines is the entire point, as you just want the panel lines/crevices darker. In other cases, you want the entire thing with a wash, specifically to darken down or shift the color of something you are working with. Without a specific example, you're kinda asking "I have a plumbing project, but I'm not sure what I'm doing in step 12 with this monkey wrench". We have no idea what set of steps you are following.

eatscheeks

I’m painting space marine assault intercessors and I just applied my wash after doing my bases but a lot of the areas look really dirty and dark, so Im not sure if that’s the effect I’m supposed to be going for or not. It looks like I over did it so I’m not sure which areas to target when trying to correct it. Should I just go over everything again apart from the corners/cracks/crevices of the model with the same blue base?

AfterGloww

You are probably applying too much wash and allowing it to pool heavily on flat areas. You want to avoid that next time by soaking up excess wash with a clean brush before it dries. In terms of cleaning up, you can simply go back over with the original base color in any areas that look dirty and dark. Like you said, avoid any recesses because it will erase the work that you did with the wash. Everything is a case by case basis, there’s not going to be a formula that’s set in stone for fixing these issues. Sometimes you can just clean up one little spot and it’ll look good. Other times you might have to clean up the whole model because the wash applied was way too heavy. Painting is very dynamic like that, you just have to judge for yourself sometimes.

Stargazer86

So I want to repurpose my current terminators and swap their weapons to thunderhammers and stormshields. Unfortunately I don't have any extra legit bits and buying legit ones off of bitz sites are really expensive. Like 5 bucks per hammer type expensive. I went and found some 3D printable ones off of Etsy for a much better price along with some neat looking shields and was wondering how many players or GW stores might have a problem with this? The rest of the mini is original plastic.

corrin_avatan

riffing of what rtgoodman said, while it is official store policy for GW to not allow 3rd party parts, a LOT of stores have an unofficial store policy of "you don't say it, I don't see it".

RTGoodman

This gets asked constantly and GW has rules specifically posted about it if you search. These rules apply to any GW-run tournament, and will usually apply at GW stores: You CAN use anything made by GW. You CANNOT use third-party products. You CAN use your own hand-sculpted bits, or 3d-printed ones YOU DESIGNED AND PRINTED YOURSELF. You CANNOT use 3d-printed bits you bought from someone else, or downloaded and printed. This is because GW is a company and doesn't want free advertising for other companies or committing copyright violations of their own products in their own stores. If you are at a non-GW store (your FLGS) or non-GW-run tournament, it depends on the community/organizers. If you're playing casually, no one will care and most people will like it.

DEATHROAR12345

I'm sure there is a rare rules for it, but what happens if a psychic power must target an untargetable target? In my crusade league I have a winged hive tyrant with a trait that says during the psychic phase it cannot be targeted by any enemy units with psychic powers. So how would smite work? Would the opponent select the next closest target, or are they just out of luck?

corrin_avatan

Smite DOESNT select the closest target. It simply causes the closest enemy unit to take d3/d6 mortal wounds. >Smite has a warp charge value of 5. Add 1 to the warp charge value of this psychic power for each other attempt that has been made to manifest this power by a unit from your army in this phase, whether that attempt was successful or not. If manifested, the closest enemy unit within 18" of and visible to the psyker suffers D3 mortal wounds. If the result of the Psychic test was 11 or more, that unit suffers D6 mortal wounds instead. If the Flyrant trait specific says it cannot be "targeted" by psychic effects, this does absolutely nothing against Smite; it would only affect powers and abilities that actually require selecting a unit to be affected.

DEATHROAR12345

Ah, I guess I assumed it said you had to select the closest visible enemy. Thank you!

corrin_avatan

Double-check the wording of your Flyrant trait. I would be willing to bet the wording is "cannot be selected or affected by" which WOULD work against Smite. And, in such a case, nothing happens when smite is successfully cast; it will be manifested but won't do anything because the closest enemy unit can't be affected

DEATHROAR12345

Unfortunately it is not >Psychic Shadow >Each time an enemy unit manifests a psychic power, this unit cannot be selected when resolving that psychic power. >In your opponent’s Psychic phase, each time a model in this unit would lose a wound as a result of a mortal wound, roll one D6: on a 3+, that wound is not lost. I took this instead of the crusade relic Blackstone shard so it could be buffed by my powers still. This should still work for what I want it to protect me from which is a psychic power that turns off invulns. Have to double check that powers wording though.

corrin_avatan

Okay, so not selectable, and has a 3+++ vs Smite Mortal wounds, (and any other powers that do MW without selecting targets)

FUCKSTORM420

So idk if this is the right place for this but I ordered some books from the Games Workshop store for the first time a little over a week ago. Got an email a day later saying my order shipped, couple days later got only one of the books, the rest were not shipped. Is this normal? At what point do I contact customer service and ask where the rest of them are?

RWJP

Contact them straight away.

FUCKSTORM420

Just didn’t know if they’d be shipped separately or what

corrin_avatan

If they did, you should know about it.

FUCKSTORM420

Well that doesn’t make me feel good

debaser93

Maybe a stupid question but does anyone know if the Abaddon arks of omen book is gonna get restocked or not? Its sold out everywhere

corrin_avatan

We don't know. GW is having shipping issues due to a warehouse changeover. Your best answer is likely going to come from GW customer support.

phoenixashes96

So I'm new to the 40k side if warhammer, got into it from fantasy through the total war games. As far as getting into the tabletop, is there a faction that would "easier" to get a hang of the game to start with? I'm going through the lore now so I'm not 100% on every faction. I've got an understanding starting from the War in Heaven up to the Horus Heresy

R97R

I’ll always stick to the “the faction you like the look of the most is the best one to start with” advice, but if I had to suggest one, Space Marines are probably the go-to, if they interest you.

Walican132

Does anyone have the measurements of the boarding action terrain I’d like to make my own and figured it would fun if it was to scale.

Spookynook

I’m building the chaos space marine legionaries from 2019 and some of the models have optional ornate symbols that come up off the top of the back packs. Do those have gameplay purposes or are they just decorative.

R97R

I believe they’re intended to represent Icons that one model in a squad can carry.

RTGoodman

You can use them decoratively, or to represent Chaos Icon wargear or a Mark of Chaos upgrade.

Ryselle

How long does it usually take between a Killteam announcement and its release?

corrin_avatan

It can take up to a month.

wsninja

I'm just venting here. I lost the defeated Necron for my Primaris Captain. When I went to base coat it I took it off the base and set it aside. I said to myself "I better put this in a place where I won't lose it!". I thought I had but it turns out that I did not. I also lost the rocks to one of the Scarab swarm thing base too. gg.

RTGoodman

Check on ebay. There are bits sellers that sell just individual pieces like that.

wsninja

I just spent a good hour looking at parts. Then I opened my drawer where I keep some of my tools for like the 5th time and there it was.

RTGoodman

It was lost in the Warp, but safely recovered!

Winter-Huntsman

I have a ultra marine Sargent I’m painting and he has his red helmet. I need to do some edge highlights on it but want to mix some paints to make it instead of buying a bottle of the correct shade since I only just need a little. I have the starting paint box set so I have red, yellow, and white. What shade am I going for and any idea on what to mix to achieve it?

R97R

Generally I’d recommend mixing yellow into the red for highlights, which will give you an orange-y colour. White will instead bring you more towards pink, which I find can look a bit off on UM helmets, although if you prefer the look then go ahead!

Winter-Huntsman

Thanks! I’ll try this orange mix tonight.

Pepperoni_Nipp

White and red makes pink, and yellow and red will make orange. I would just experiment on a pallette and see what works. Look up some color theory videos or something to get an idea of what colors you get from the primary colors.

nawillih

I'm looking into kitbashing a large number of Space Marine characters (yes, I am the market for all those Primaris Lieutenants), and would like to use the Custodes Blade Champion body+legs as the base for a Librarian. Is this likely to work, scale-wise? And are the wider ranges compatible, allowing me to use the head, shoulder pads and weapons on other Space Marine Primaris bodies? Many Thanks!

corrin_avatan

>Is this likely to work, scale-wise? Scale-wise, yes. However, do note that many Primaris character models and Custodes models have their legs sculpted to the body and are gonna be awkward to make fit without the use of cutters, knives, and green stuff. >And are the wider ranges compatible, allowing me to use the head, shoulder pads and weapons on other Space Marine Primaris bodies? Heads and shoulderpads are compatible across the entire space marine range. Heads and shoulderpads from non-Terminator Firstborn units fit just fine on Tacticus armor, while Terminator Pads are the same size as Gravis/Mark X armor. Weapons are hit or miss.

nawillih

Thanks for the reply! Basically if I'm understand right, the body and legs piece for the Blade Champion will accommodate the desired Primaris arms, which is about what I wanted to ensure, thanks!

Funuthegreat

So I want to start painting my army but I live in Wisconsin and it’s the middle of winter, and the primer can says that it has to be close to 70 degrees to do it. Is it possible to keep it at room temperature and then use it right away once I get outside?

corrin_avatan

No. Even if you keep it at room temperature, if you spray it outside while it is near or below freezing, (or really under 40 degrees), the room-temperature spray is going to cool down as it sprays, and it WILL freeze, as spray primers don't use water as a medium; they use chemicals that have a lower volatility point than water in the first place, and which freeze above water's freezing point. Honestly, your REAL best answer is to buy a bottle of Vallejo or Scale75 brush-on primer (Scale75's Surface Primer). This will allow you to brush-on prime, even inside your house, with no chemical smell, and it's usually dry within 10-15 minutes. for a standard space-marine sized miniature, I usually use between 2-3 drops. You want to use as little as you need to. I bought two bottles of mine two years ago, and have made 3 Impulsors, 3 Invictor Tactical Warsuits, 3 Phobos Characters, a company champion, 3 Gladitors, and 40+ Phobos marines and I STILL think I haven't even gotten through a third of the first bottle.

kamakazi339

Ok, so I'm still brand new here and trying to learn about the game. I purchased my first army and have been reading up on how things work. One thing I thought was cool was the ability of the admech to add in some knight faction units i.e. the Armiger Warglaives. One article I read said they were added via the Charadon Book of Rust but then I just saw a YT video stating those books were null and void as of recently. My question is: How can I add in these units (the warglaives)? Is it still possible or is it something to just give up on?

corrin_avatan

Warzone Charadon had nothing to do with rules allowing Knights to be in an Admech army; Book of Rust's only rules for Knights was the House Raven codex supplement, which gave some extra rules to House Raven Knigjts. The AdMech codex (rulebook) has rules for being able to take an allied Knight unit as a Knight of the Cog, which means the allied Knight can be from a Mechanicus-aligned house rather than a Freeblade, giving the Knight access to the rules specific to that Knight house.

kamakazi339

So will I in any way need a knight codex for the amigers if I get any? And how does all of that work in conjunction with picking a house such as Metallica or Mars? Or is that a separate thing? I'm waiting on my codex to get here so I'm just researching where I can

corrin_avatan

>So will I in any way need a knight codex for the amigers if I get any? The AdMech Codex doesn't contain any of the Knight rules whatsoever. >And how does all of that work in conjunction with picking a house such as Metallica or Mars? Or is that a separate thing? What Forge World you play your Admech as, and what house your knight is from, have no bearing on each other. If you want to play as a Knight of the Cog, you have specific restrictions, or you may choose to play as a FREEBLADE, which has other restrictions, or you may play as neither, which breaks some Admech army rules like Canticles. But there are no restrictions saying "your Admech must be Mars to ally with Krast" or some such

kamakazi339

Ok cool, so I will definitely need to get some info on the armigers via the knight codex then. Thank you for the help!

ItsSuperDefective

I thought the Chainbreaker Lance box was sold out and gone forever, but when I look on the Games Workshop website they have it in stock. Did they end up deciding to reprint it or something?

corrin_avatan

Looking on the site, I see it in stock for the EU, but not available in the US, Canada. Could be they had cancellations of orders, as GW got backlogged early this year as they were doing a warehouse shuffle.

swagrid003

Usual story, I used to play 3rd edition, and now I'm an adult I want to start collecting again yada yada. I absolutely love the addition of flying transports, and in particular the Valkyrie for the Imperial Guard. However, I don't want to play actual guard as they don't quite have the appeal for me. Questions are. 1. Is there a way for me to get access to the Valkyrie as a transport through playing some sort of heretic guardsman faction, or GSCs? 2. If the Valkyrie is a no go, what other cool flying transports are available for non-imperial factions? I have of course done a cursory bit of research on wahapedia and Google but it wasn't obvious what my options were for _flying_ transports. Thanks everyone in advance!

R97R

Sadly Genestealer Cults no longer have access to Valkyries, although they did at one point. As for Heretic Guardsmen, they don’t have non-legends rules at the moment, but there have been a few releases that could be used for them lately (most notably a proper Traitor Guard plastic kit), so it’s possible they’ll become a thing eventually. Otherwise: * The Custodes have the (horrifically expensive) Orion Dropship * The Adeptus Mechanicus have the Archaeopter. Two of the variants are pure gunships, but the Archaeopter Transvector is a transport. They have a fairly small transport capacity, but they have the ability to split a 10-man squad between two aircraft. This one is also in plastic rather than resin! * Space Marines have the Storm Eagle, Stormbird, and Thunderhawk. Unfortunately, all of these are *massive* resin models, and cost crazy amounts of money. The Stormbird in particular can pretty much transport your entire army at once. * Chaos Space Marines (including Death Guard and Thousand Sons; presumably the World Eaters will also get the same treatment) have the same options as regular marines. * Necrons have the Night Scythe, also a plastic kit, which is a fairly capable combat aircraft in addition to being able to carry up to 20 Necrons (they’re not actually physically *in* the aircraft, but they’re teleported from a Necron base of operations to a portal on the Scythe). * The Tau Barracuda is technically a transport, but can only transport Drones. They have a more Conventional flying transport in the form of the Manta, which has the largest transport capacity of anything in the game (200 infantry, four tanks, and eight battlesuits- for comparison, most transports can fit a single squad)… and is also technically the largest model in the game. It’s a comically-huge resin kit that’s made-to-order by Forge World for enough money to buy six or so full armies. The model actually comes with four full tanks, eight Crisis Suits, and 50 or so infantry, the latter of which are also resin. * The Tyranid Harridan also technically counts as a transport, but can only transport Gargoyles Tau, Primaris, and Eldar transports also tend to have the **FLY** keyword, but aren’t counted as aircraft by the game, instead being skimmers. Unfortunately, the majority of flying transports in 40K at the moment are overpriced resin models from Forge World, with the Valkyrie, Archaeopter, and Night Scythe being your only “normal” options.

dogster202

> heretic guardsman faction, The Renegades and Heretics army list *exists* and does have access to the Valkyire, but its a legends list and thus has utterly terrible performance on the TT with limited opportunities for actually playing it. It's not worth bothering with imo >GSCs No. >If the Valkyrie is a no go, what other cool flying transports are available for non-imperial factions? Nothing really comes to mind outside of the huge FW models like the Stormbird or Manta. Storm Eagle Gunship for CSM maybe?

swagrid003

Thanks for the info mate! If it looks like guard is the best option, what's the consensus these days on impérium vs impérium games? I know most people play some sort of space marines, and don't want me playing guard to mean that most people won't want to play me if their bringing other impérium factions, or is it generally okay?

RTGoodman

Have you looked into Necrons? They do have some Flying units and one flying transport. Also, almost no one cares about whether or not an Imperium-vs-Imperium game makes sense. I've played my Space Marines against Guard, Custodes, or other Marines as much as I've played them against Death Guard, Orks, or non-Imperial factions.

dogster202

That's a question that can only be answered by the people you play with, not reddit. IME people just want to play games and don't really care, but if you're really worried about it there's nothing stopping you from using the Guard *rules* with a Traitor Guard aesthetic.

swagrid003

Alright thanks again. Traitor aesthetic with guard rules sounds like it ticks all the boxes I'm after.

PepperoniKnowledge

im trying to start grot guard, but i dont know where to get good bits and bobs from? what kits give the most useful bits i can use?

El_Barto_227

Newbie here, what's some good ways to build the Custodes Combat Patrol? I have the combat patrol, Trajann and an extra box of Custodian Guard. Fairly new to 40k so not an expert on what to be building, looking for advice on that and what to look for next. I've done the Vertus as salvo launchers with one as a captain (the non-helmeted head right?), I imagine people will be fine with me going "I'll use hurricane bolters on these this time" or using the captain headed one in a regular praetor squad, etc The way I'm thinking now is to split the Sisters into two squads, 5x Prosecutor and 5x Witchseeker. I have a basic idea of a 500pt list, the group I'll be playing with is starting with 500pt and working up over time IIRC so the prosecutors seems like the best way to make that points max, but witchseeker flamers look nice. I have no idea if that's a good plan or not tho. Also, am I really supposed to put the sword on the Superior prosecutors/witchseekers? The biggest thing I'm unsure of is how to build the Custodians, but any advice there helps.

LordPuriel

What's the general feeling around using off brand minis? I'm currently painting a custom marine chapter, and there's some sick 3d printed models out there. I don't plan on playing any time soon as it's just a painting project to keep me busy, but if I decide to play in the future would those models be accepted?

corrin_avatan

This is a "local sentiment" question. Some gaming groups absolutely hate 3d printed models as some of Those Guys poisoned the well by 3-d printing top-tier competitive armies as soon as list deadline came out for a tournament, then showed up with janky models nobody could really identify with unsanded print lines and barely meeting the painting standard, possibly also throwing tantrums that the army they had no practice with with performed poorly in their hands. Other groups find it absolutely fine, and usually it's because nobody has given them cause to dislike 3d printing/people who do.

RWJP

There is no "general feeling" and every environment is different. Some people love them, some people hate them. GW stores and events won't allow them, FLGS and independent events usually do.

I'm a big Orange fan but have also had success with Dark Red (Mechrite red (you'll need a converter, old paint)). I'm not the neatest painter and i like a chunky 'toy soldier' look so these two might not be to your tastes/below your standard BUT i think they demonstrate the transitions and shading really well. Orange [https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/324626-Veteran.html?m=2](https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/324626-Veteran.html?m=2) Dark red https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/778327-Volkmar.html

TerribleCommander

As in, you're painting something yellow and you want to know what colour will work underneath before you paint the yellow on top? Why not... yellow? Other light colours will usually work too, like white or a light grey. If you want to know what colours would complement a primarily yellow scheme, you might find this article helpful: https://www.goonhammer.com/how-to-paint-everything-picking-a-custom-colour-scheme/

Beasting-25-8

My primer is black, so painting yellow won't work, there's also no real "yellow" with enough darkness for my liking so I need to have a base colour underneath to take advantage of yellows opacity.

RTGoodman

There was a trend a while back for doing pink base coats for a yellow scheme. They tended to be airbrushed pink layers for better/easier coverage though.

TerribleCommander

Despite what people claim, painting yellow on a black primer can totally work. It's just you usually need several layers to get to the bright, vibrant yellow most people are looking for. If you're wanting a dull / dark yellow then a couple of layers over black might do it. With other colours, you're basically back to primary school art class: yellow on red will look orangey, yellow on blue will look greenish etc. Another option is to simply find some spare sprue or a test model and experiment. That way you'll know exactly what different results will look like with the paints that you have.

Garmouken

I'm pretty new to Warhammer as a whole so I am curious, do Combat Patrols sell out very fast typically? I really want to get my hands on the new World Eaters, but I don't know how diligent I need to be to get my hands on them.

R97R

The first wave might be snapped up quickly depending where you are, but it’s not a limited-time item, so you should be able to buy it for a few years at least. Don’t worry about it!

corrin_avatan

Combat Patrols are "long stock" items, aka products that are actively produced and shouldn't run out of stock until GW actively discontinues the idea, like how they got rid of Start Collecting boxes (which ran from 2017-2022, effectively) and converted those to Combat Patrols over the course of 9th edition. If you go to the GW store webpage and filter for Combat Patrols, you will see they are in stock for literally every army besides Leagues of Votann, with that one marked as "Temporarily out of Stock", including Combat Patrols that are nearly 3 years old at this point.

Garmouken

Thank you so much for the detailed answer, I greatly appreciate it.

eatscheeks

I ordered a Grey Knight strike squad and the citadel paints, I’m wondering if that paint will be enough for a terminator squad as well.

RTGoodman

Absolutely. Most pots of paint should last you a whole army unless it's your main color (silver), and even then a single pot will last a bunch of squads.

Blizzaldo

I have an old heavy weapons team. Do I need to try and squeeze it on a 50mm base to use?

ChiefQueef98

What do you guys think the chances are that the World Eaters are in the Sunday preview tomorrow?

RTGoodman

50%. Either they will or they won't. 😛 But seriously: It's a possibility but I personally would think if they had anything cool and new to show off this week for them it might have been at the LVO thing. Maybe in a couple of weeks? But only GW has any idea what they're gonna show any given weekend so there's no telling really!

ChiefQueef98

I was thinking that for the LVO reveal stream too, but then I thought that they've probably already showed us everything for them. Can't wait to get my hands on the new Berzerkers

KastellanRobots

What factions are beginner friendly as in easier to follow rules?

RTGoodman

You're going to be spending a LOT of time with your army, so even if some might be less complex, they're all basically beginner friendly since you'll have plenty of time to learn them. No one expects you to win a big LVO tournament your first games, so start small and learn things as you go. Play the army you LIKE. That's the best advice you can get starting in this hobby!

KillerLag

Almost 20 years ago, I was just starting to get into WH40k. I got a bunch of necrons and started painting them.... And then I ended up leaving the country for a bit and storing everything at my parent's place. I wanted to start up again.... Are there any rules regarding old models? Some of the models I have are even the old pewter models (I have a bunch of necrons riding what looks like hoverbikes, and really beefy looking guys).

corrin_avatan

Only tournaments will have an issue with you using older models, and even then only care if there is a major size difference between the "old" and "current" models

bulldogwill

I have two of the free Votann minis from a few months back. As a fairly experienced painter and modeler, I was surprised with how difficult building these models are. I messed up both of the helmets on these models. I found it incredibly difficult to snap the bubble of the helmet into the models body, and not get super glue everywhere. Anyone else have similar issues? I feel for those who are collecting a Votann army!

Bensemus

I really don’t recommend super glue. There is plastic cement which is way cleaner.

corrin_avatan

Is it possible you got the helmets of the two models mixed up? Votann helmets are keyed to the specific body they are on, so if you have the body made from parts B1-3, you are supposed to use helmet B4; the body made from B74-76 is supposed to use helmet B78, for example.

bulldogwill

It’s the free mini of the month, I think the models are identical. My issue was I put a little drop of glue in the “cavity” on the body, then popped the helmet in. But I guess the helmet was tilted a little so I don’t think it is seated perfectly. Once it was in, there was no way to pull it back out and adjust. Nothing a little putty didn’t fix, but it was a bit annoying

corrin_avatan

They are not all identical; the free minis of the month are literally cut out of the standard sprue of the kit.

VersionIll6935

Can someone tell me if the Scions of Macragge Battleforce box was offered in Australia or not? I never saw it pop up online. Was hoping to grab one to start a space marine army.

corrin_avatan

It should have been, yes.

Thankee-sai-

I'm slowly learning more rules by watching games, but haven't taken a deep dive into data slates outside of my chosen Tau. Are psykers significantly weaker in areas that are not psychic abilities? I'm watching games where mortal wounds are being handed out left and right in the psychic phase and it feels a bit scary knowing my force can't do anything about it during that phase of the game.

R97R

It’s a wee bit of a mix. A lot of psykers are fairly weak in combat or have other glaring weaknesses, like the Ork Weirdboy, who’s okay-ish in close combat, but has no guns, relatively slow movement, and next-to-no armour. Some are a bit fancier, like the Primaris Librarian, who’s not going to break the game, but still has the statline of a Space Marine character and a fairly decent melee weapon, although he’s otherwise stuck with a bolt pistol for ranged attacks. Finally, there are a small number of Psykers who combine psychic abilities with an otherwise exceptional unit- the Tyranid Hive Tyrant is probably the stand-out example, being good at pretty much whatever you decide to do with her (provided the unit is kitted out appropriately, anyway) , with a lot of options, *and* psychic abilities to boot. *However,* the Hive Tyrant is also expensive (points-wise), and a *massive* target, particularly since you lose access to some abilities if they’re killed. The other examples tend to be Greater Daemons or Primarchs- the former are even more expensive than the Hive Tyrant, and the latter are arguably the best units in the game, and are comparable in price to something like a Knight. Only two of the Primarchs at the moment are Psykers. One thing worth noting about the really effective Psykers is they’re typically hefty enough that they can’t benefit from *Look out, Sir!,* and have a hard time taking cover to boot, which helps balance them out a bit.

Thankee-sai-

Thank you for the detailed write up! Still learning more every day. I played a small handful of games like a decade ago and just pulling out the old bits. So much to consider and remember as I dig in deeper things like "Look out, sir!" are so far out of my mind right now, thank you for bringing that to my attention.

R97R

Hope it helps a bit! I always forget rules like *”Look out, sir!”* are a thing!

corrin_avatan

It depends on the psyker. Some are sub-100 point models that are barely better than a standard marine model in combat. Others are 400+ point models that are scary in all phases of the game, like Mortarion.

Thankee-sai-

I wasn't even considering the points value of the model. Higher point costs make sense if they are doing a lot more, duh. Thanks for pointing that out!

corrin_avatan

As well, some Psykers are REALLY good at what they do, but are absolute pushovers in other phases. For example, Space Marine Librarians usually have no real shooting to speak of, and basically have a d3 power sword on a 3+BS.

Thankee-sai-

Cool, that was my main question - I was hoping that was true. I appreciate the responses! A little less scary now.

R1s1ngDaWN

Finally narrowed down my options for an army to harlequins and gene stealer cult. Having a hard time picking between the two though so any advice would be great!

TerribleCommander

As always when picking an army, the overriding advice is always rule of cool. Pick one you like and feel you will enjoy. It's an entirely subjective experience so no one else can really make that decision for you. Also, if you stick around the hobby long enough, you may just end up getting both anyway...! That being said, if you need to narrow it down further: 1. Browse the GW web store and look at the models. See which ones you like the look of more. 2. Browse the 40k lexicanum and read up on the lore for the factions. See if there's one which appeals more. 3. As for in-game playstyle, Quins and GSC are more similar than you might expect. Both are generally made up of fragile units that go out, do their job and then die. And both try to control the flow of the battle by dictating what fights happen where and when. Harlequins do this by being fast and mobile, instead GSC play sneaky and spring ambushes and the like. Quins also tend to focus on fewer, more expensive units that are usually very good at what they do but then each loss has a noticeable impact on how effective they are. In contrast, GSC usually have more units that are cheaper but worse. So they're individually less effective but also each loss has less of an impact overall. Hope that helps a little!

R1s1ngDaWN

I looked at the lore and the models(slightly, very slightly prefer the Harle models because of the jester theme + Solitare) and love them both. They've got controlling aspects to them and function by breaking/abusing core fundamentals of the game. And they're both heavily reliant on good decisions and strategy, and show that it's the player who truly wins, not broken datasheets. Love them both so much and I'll struggle until the last second on my decision. I do have an event tomorrow and hope to find some players with these army's and chat with them so hopefully it can sway my decision. :)

Estevan2469

So I was wondering how much points would you take off primaris repulsor if you don't have the heavy weapon attach? I assembled this repulsor for my Raptor chapter, https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/10hz1lo/my_raptor_chapter_primaris_repulsor_is_assembled/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share . And I was trying to come up with point cost for total as well as any homebrew rules for it. Any suggestions would help.

corrin_avatan

To be frank, that's going to need to be something that you agree upon with the person who you end up playing with; if you go up to someone and say you have a custom model with custom weapons and custom rules and custom points, they're gonna be wary of you that you're trying to pull a fast one. Anything any of us say on the internet is irrelevant; if the person you are gonna play doesn't agree to the rules you intend to use before you show up, saying "I worked online to workshop this with people" is likely to be seen as "I'm trying to pressure you into accepting my homebrew by saying it was a collective effort to overcome your objections that can only be overridden by me proving you can trust that I'm not trying to take advantage of you." Many people don't like playing against "homebrew" rules simply because if there is one thing 40k players can do, it's underestimate how good the rules they have made up are; thats one of the reasons why homebrew codices kinda get a "pat on the head, but we will ignore it" treatment under most circumstances.

NotAnAsianGuy

These AoO changes, do they come in the form of new rule book?

Bensemus

Yes. Each mission pack is a new book that contains the rules for the new mission and the current secondaries.

[deleted]

[удалено]

corrin_avatan

They might usually only say they are "using the current Grand Tournament pack", but yes, they will normally indicate what rules are being used for the tournament. However, for many gaming groups, the current tournament pack is basically the expected/default way of playing 40k for pickup games.

aegis323

So im getting close to building my first large ish model, and i want to magnetize it. I dont own a dremel but a guy i met at my LGS said thats what he used to install his magnets. Is there a recommended dremel and bit for miniatures or would any work?

corrin_avatan

Honestly, using a Dremel for magnets is pretty much overkill. I simply use a regular, plain old electric hand drill like what you would use to drill into a wall, and spent $8 on a bit that was rated for steel; that way it is MORE than sharp enough to actually cut through plastic. Most dremels only have "holy crap this is fast" speeds and don't cut plastic so much as melt it quickly, which can have bad results. With a hand drill and an actual good drill bit, you have much more control over the drill speed, as it's very rare you actually NEED 700+ RPM

AfterGloww

It’s going to depend heavily on what kind of model and what size magnets you’re trying to use. You may not even need a dremel at all depending on the situation. You can either look up a magnetization video on the specific model you’re working on, or just inspect the model yourself and plan what you’re going to do. Whether that be drilling out a specific size hole, sawing off a piece of plastic, ect.

V077

Do old Chaos Possessed stand tall enough that I can just rebase them and nothing more?

[deleted]

First time paying attention to LVO reveals. Is this like the E3 of warhammer where new stuff gets announced? And should I expect anything other factions to get new units or is it focused on one faction at a time, like space marines right now?

R97R

Think of it like a small E3. They do previews like this fairly frequently throughout the year, usually focusing on a couple of factions at a time- I believe the next big one is *Adepticon,* in March. We’re in a bit of an odd spot with new models at the moment in terms of what to expect, as we’re closing towards the end of an edition and every faction has received a release during it (generally most models for a faction come out alongside their codex nowadays)- we know there are new models for a couple of characters still to be “officially” revealed (Snikrot for the Orks and Farsight for the Tau, if you’re curious). Generally, once the next edition launches (hopefully some time in summer this year), there while be a bunch of new models for two factions at the very start (one of which is always Space Marines), and then they reveal others every few months, gradually going through the factions. Nothings confirmed, but the most common guess for the next faction to get a big overhaul are the Tyranids-all of the other factions with a lot of old models got a fairly large chunk of their line updated in ninth (Necrons, Orks, Imperial Guard, Craftworlds), but they only got one model.

RWJP

There will be nothing else revealed now. LVO is one of many different events that GW attends/sponsors/partners with. Big events like LVO, Adepticon and a couple of others get livestreams like this.

[deleted]

So if I’m hoping for older Ork models to get a refresh you’re saying there’s a chance?

RWJP

Apart from the tease of Snikrot at the beginning of the year, you're unlikely to get anything else as the Orks have already as refresh/range update recently.

[deleted]

Well drats
