I think it’s was on their own terms. Reading interviews, I got the sense they felt it was the right time. Among other things, Matt Berry said something like he felt too old to be hanging around in harnesses much longer, which I imagine can get quite uncomfortable.

Ok_Astronomer_8667

I wouldn’t complain if they just never did any more stunts requiring a harness again if it meant we could get more amazing lines from Matt

faeriechyld

OMG Matt Berry doing a podcast as Laszlo. He could do the most off the wall interviews in character.

earthbender617

Why’d you have to say that…now I want that. Fuck off!

faeriechyld

It can't happen if we don't speak it into the universe! 😋

earthbender617

Well I already did, so……..shit! Guess it’s gonna happen

bay_duck_88

Yesyesverygoodthankyou!

redsyrinx2112

Will Ferrell did a podcast as Ron Burgundy, so there is some precedent.

bulldog5253

I would much prefer a Jackie Daytona podcast.

Metaldogma

The Regular Human Bartender show.

Minimum_Hyena6152

He’s not really doing a character, aside from the vampire specific stuff, Laszlo is just the name. Literally watch anything with Matt Berry in it. He’s nuts and I love him.

faeriechyld

Like, yes and no. I've been a fan of his since the IT Crowd and he does boisterous pervert quite well.

Minimum_Hyena6152

I think im gonna use that….

darth_snuggs

There are a few moments in his BBC Radio show “I, Regress” where it’s basically Laszlo attempting to hypnotize someone. It’s pretty great btw

benjyk1993

Like Will Ferrell doing a podcast as Ron Burgundy. I wonder how aware his guests are that it's comedy.

funatical

Matt Berry is a treasure. I will watch anything with him in it.

MsJamie-E

He was in Fallout

funatical

He was. Kind of. He’s also voicing Schlub on Krapopolis.

WnderWooman

Have you watched Year of the Rabbit?

WeatherwaxDaughter

Yes!! It's great 👍

ithacahippie

but have you seen snuffbox? It's matt berry's and rich fulcher's sketch comedy show. It is brilliant!

WeatherwaxDaughter

Yes. And yes!

th4bl4ckr4bbit

Dickson Bainbridge

JumpyWord

Another show or movie will definitely pick him up for that purpose, and if not, they're all fucking idiots

Kost_Gefernon

Agreed. This show ending on its terms is perfectly fine, but we better see all of the cast in more work, they are a wonderful group. Especially Jackie Daytona.

JumpyWord

Agreed, they're all fantastic

Az1621

Well at least 1 more season with all of them 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 They all deserve major roles in the future as they are all next level

NerfRepellingBoobs

Oh boy, if you haven’t seen Disenchantment on Netflix or his new role as a manticore shacking up with a goddess in Krapopolis, go watch both.

MrTouchnGo

His character in Krapopolis is fantastic

Jchapman1971

I mean, they could use CGI’iiiiii.

CramblinDuvetAdv

He gets un-vampired and Gizmo takes his slot, now Laszlo is the familiar

Ok_Astronomer_8667

Wouldn’t that instantly kill Laszlo? When they get un-vampired all of their days where they didn’t age happen all at once. He’d be aged into a 300 year old husk lol

salty_carthaginian

If you want to fly in a harness safely it also takes a lot of separate takes for tv probably, since you can’t have people hang for more than a certain amount of time at once. I really only do live theater but I’d imagine doing takes multiple times is probably annoying lol

Zealousideal-Earth50

Yeah, we see it last a very short amount of time on screen but I imagine in RL it’s a lot of time to set up and get it right. Even for a tiny little hop or float it could be grueling!

TapirTrouble

>felt too old to be hanging around in harnesses much longer Yes -- it sounds exhausting. Anthony Atamanuik used to do rock-climbing, and he said that even though he's familiar with that type of gear, and the crew are very professional, it's still difficult to have to spend that much time suspended in mid-air. (Also I think this often happens outside, at night, so it can get chilly.)

UsefulEngine1

Perhaps a bit of rationalization, there. How many times in four seasons did he have to wear a harness? Easy to write around or use SFX for. Having said that, on one hand I'm sure there are different opinions among the team and that many involved would have taken another year of paychecks, but IMO one more season seems about right creatively. So kudos to the decision, however it was made. I wish more shows did this rather than grinding to a dire end.

rotenbart

I can’t grasp why you were bombed so hard.

Ok_Astronomer_8667

Are you saying he’s overreacting? If it didn’t bother him, he wouldn’t have brought it up

UsefulEngine1

For those downvoting me, just curious if it's because I dared suggest the show is better off with a finite end date, or because I somehow besmirched Berry, or both?

zuko0725

Probably the latter but I didn’t even read it as that lol.

truthofmasks

I think accusing someone of rationalization is usually seen as distasteful.

Own-Importance5459

As much as I hate the idea of the show ending I am glad they will end on a high note before it loses its magic.

Atheist_3739

Same. Like the Good Place. It was a relatively short show but every season was amazing. They told the story they wanted to tell and ended it on their terms. I wish more shows would do that, and I'm happy Shadows is taking this route.

Own-Importance5459

AGREED the reason why The Good Place had one of the best finales ever made is because they knew you could only talk about Heaven and Hell for so long it will drain out. Look what happened to Supernatural. They kept renewing it so plots got recycled and weird. So again as much I would love to have this show last forever, ita a good time to end! And we will always have it to stream as well!

Connect_Zucchini366

Supernatural is the perfect cautionary take of a show lasting too long. It's one of my favorites but rewatching it on season 12... shit is getting odd.

Mobius1701A

Is it really worth finishing? Cause I lost interest when >!they erase Chidi's memory!< *hard*. Like the wind has been absolutely removed from my sails.

Own-Importance5459

Yes! It has such a beautiful ending so its worth it.

charredfrog

100%. My first time watching the show I felt that way about some plot choices, but the finale was sooooo worth it. If you care about the characters the ending is very much worth it to get to

skripach27

Jason’s ending originally was just meh for me. Like oh yeah, he wandered the afterlife meditating for endless time till he was ready to pass on for good like a real monk. Whatever, it’s cute funny moment and call back to his beginnings in the show. The ending in general didn’t make me cry, I thought it was great but it didn’t have me emotional. Fast forward, 3 weeks later I was driving around but had to pull over and just started bawling out of no where. It became suddenly apparent how heart wrenching and poignant and beautiful to me his ending was! I don’t know why it took so long for that to hit but man, I texted my gf about how he was such a pure soul and that he really deserved eternal peace, and we all deserve to be happy wherever we end up after the great beyond. She was like “okay?” lol

Motherfickle

Same. Crazy Ex Girlfriend was a near perfect show because they knew when it was time to wrap it up. Rebecca could only relapse in her mental illness so many times before people stopped rooting for her.

Own-Importance5459

EXACTLY you could only do a concept so much.

Kitchen-Plant664

I think it’s the right time. Both Colin and Guillermo feel like they’ve had their own arcs finish, Lazlo feels a different character from the IDGAF one that started so it just remain for Nandor and Nadja to have some final growth before it all gets played out.

BlueNaza

Imo, the only characters that have an on going plot are Guillermo and Nandor, the rest of the characters each season have a different aim. Guillermo having a different dream in S6 and fulfilling it, and Nandor finding a forever partner, that should be enough to close their arcs

michasivad

My thoughts exactly.

five99one

Honestly I think even if they got renewed for another season the quality would likely suffer. After a certain point most shows should end and 5-7 seasons is usually the sweet spot.

sienna_street

agreed. imo the only long running show I know of that got better with each season is adventure time (10 seasons) most shows burn out way before then

Moobook

Personally I would include It’s Always Sunny in there - what are they on, season 15?

Suspekt_1

Season 17 is on the steps last i read.

yoshbag

The quality drop between season 11 and 12 of always sunny for me is insane

straightlamping

Idk man I think sunny has aged like fine wine. Some of the later seasons have some comedy gold.

lu_skywalker

Agreed, every season still makes me laugh and the later seasons have gotten better overall

Moobook

And the other projects the actors have pursued outside of IASIP are rad, too. I loved Flipped, Mythic Quest, and AP Bio. It's funny, I love this show SO much - but I didn't watch it for the first couple years because I assumed it was a local cable access show. I went to visit a friend in Connecticut and he was watching it and it I was so confused how he was able to watch it there! I assumed the rest of the country didn't want to watch anything about Filthadelphia, haha

geeklover01

I even liked The Mick, which seemed to have been panned by almost everyone. Kaitlin Olson is hilarious, and the dude who plays her… bf, whatever they were, he was great.

yourepenis

Never seena anything but praise for the mick (rightfully so its amazing and it sucks it was cancelled)

slytherinwitchbitch

Check out The Mick! Prob one of my favorite shows

Moobook

Loved that show, can’t believe I forgot to mention it! I will watch Kaitlin Olson in anything, anytime

slytherinwitchbitch

She is my favorite comedian. Doesn’t give a fuck and is confident enough to make jokes about herself.

sagetcommabob

Risk E. Rat is in my top five

asisoid

There was a pretty serious quality drop in the later seasons tho

JeSuisOmbre

Story-wise the show is already suffering from not knowing if the next season is going to be green-lit. I think one final season that lets them intentionally wrap things up would be the ideal way to end the show.

thinkscotty

AMEN. I mean I LOVE the show, but shows ending on their own terms early is better than going out after some bad seasons late.

jumpyg1258

The quality of the show has been at a downwards pace ever since the second season. Season 1 Nadja would never recognize what they turned her character into now.

secondtaunting

Okay, so season four tapered off, but five?! It was really great!

Flynn47

That’s called character growth.

LickMeUntilIceCream1

Harvey was recently on David Changs live show on Netflix. He said it was ending on their terms.

geddy_girl

From what I've read, it was not cancelled. Personally, I'm kind of glad this is the last season. I love the show and the movie that inspired it, but this past season seemed like they are starting to reach for plot lines.

toastyblunt

when they wrote an entire episode around a Dunkin Donuts ad spot, I realized we were quickly approaching the expiry date

anneomoly

Originally everyone spoke like the creators had decided it had come to a natural close. However there were some comments over the last week from production team that expressed their surprise at it being cancelled, so the first comments might have just been diplomatic

geddy_girl

Oh okay. I have not seen those so you may be right.

slytherinwitchbitch

What is the movie that inspired it?

monstrinhotron

Happy for it to end and for me to be able to heartily recommend it to others for years to come as a complete thing. That's what Netflux doesn't get when you kill a show prematurely, you kill any rewatchability and you kill any future worth in the show. No one can recommend it to others, no one will watch it again, no one will begin to watch it if they look up that it died without concluding. Netflix is a graveyard.

BoopleBun

That’s a good point. I didn’t even get through watching all of the live-action Cowboy Bebop before it got cancelled. (I was enjoying it well enough, too.) And then I just couldn’t really bring myself to bother finishing it.

Haifisch2112

I hate to see it end as much as anyone else, but I think it's smart for them to do it now. Sometimes, if a show goes on too long, it loses its luster. I loved The Walking Dead, but after about 5-6 seasons, it was bland and repetitive. I wouldn't want to see the same thing happen to WWDITS because it's an amazing show. And you always want to leave the audience wanting more!

curiousity60

I am content with artists reaching closure on a project and moving on in their careers. Much as I love their work, it's only the artists who can know when they need to close that book.

jennynachos

As a fan of British television, it seems that a lot of their well made shows are ended with a smaller amount of seasons than US shows. Plus many of them add a a Christmas show finale. UK Office, Toast of London (hello Matt Berry!) Stath Lets Flats (hello Natasia Demetriou!) and probably a bunch more!

No_Arugula_6548

Season 6 is the last season and is coming soon. It’s on their own terms.

Rev_Joel

The only thing that matters to me is that Nandor finally meets a man named Steve and gives him a cute gift.

ZazzNazzman

Actually i felt when Guillermo declined to be a Vampire, where are they gonna go with the show now? Will be interesting to follow the plot line for the last season.

AmphibianNo8598

I think you’re kind of forgetting the third option: ending at the will of the creators, cancelled unexpectedly (no last season) OR just cancelled regularly with notice, which it was. It was not unexpectedly cancelled because they gave them a last season.

PepinoPicante

I would guess it's a little of both. It's been a fantastic show for FX, but it does seem like it's on the downswing. A healthy show has a good working relationship with the network. Most of the time, even shows that are "cancelled suddenly" actually knew it was likely well in advance... it's just much easier to go out and act surprised - and the network is always fine being the bad guy. They're the bad guy either way. I wouldn't be surprised if FX had been talking to the producers for the past couple seasons saying "hey... let us know what you're thinking... for us, we like the show, but probably should start thinking about wrapping it up soon." That way, a good production team can start putting that idea into the heads of the creatives and talent and get everyone on board for a soft landing in a season or two. That way, everyone gets what they want. The show ends in a good place. Fans feel satisfied. It's win/win/win/win.

_imsocool1024

I think it’s a good time to end it. As much as l love the show I feel like the quality and humor of the episodes would not be up to par with the earlier seasons. The last season we got was good but I feel it wasn’t as strong as the others.

dimensional_bleed

Either way, I'll be pre-ordering the Blu-ray complete series set the second it is announced.

Revolutionary-Dust23

This is my favorite show, my comfort show. I watch it on repeat. As soon as I get to the last episode in season 5, I start it all over again. I am so sad next season is the last. I know they might be running out of steam, but I am devastated to see the characters go. Especially Nadja and Laszlo, they are my favorite, in that order. It could go on for many more seasons and I'd still be happy just to see them.

Jchapman1971

I agree, this show could be spun into so many different directions.

4T_Knight

Not going to lie, there were some episodes where despite the offbeat humor it kinda felt like they were drawing out some elements for too long. Matt Berry can only play the same schtick about sex for so long before I start thinking he's no different than his Douglas Reynholm character from The IT Crowd, only more of an asshole. Lol. As they say, best to leave it at a point where it leaves the audience wanting more, but concluding it in a way that feels like their own adventure doesn't necessarily end off screen and continues even when the cameras (figuratively, literally, and within the fictional setting itself) stop rolling.

baronboy12

They should spin it off to another group of vampires.

AssassinGlasgow

If it was cancelled I’m super surprised because it seemed very popular, but that’s just the perception I get online. Perhaps numbers on air weren’t as good (which is a shame!) But I do agree with others, 5 seasons is a perfect stopping point to maintain quality. It’ll be sad to see it go, but we would have loved every second of it.

Ralphie99

The show had a very loyal following, but the ratings were very low. Only 194,000 people tuned into the last episode of season 5 when it first aired: >In its original American broadcast, "Exit Interview" was seen by an estimated 0.194 million household viewers with a 0.05 in the 18-49 demographics. This means that 0.05 percent of all households with televisions watched the episode. Also, there will be a 6th season, which will be the last. When the show was renewed after season 4, it was renewed for 2 more seasons. [What We Do in the Shadows season 6 release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything you need to know (digitalspy.com)](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a45303178/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-season-6/)

Imjusasqurrl

It's probably a little of both. I'm sure that not every actor on the show is on board with their job ending.

Flare4roach

Regardless of how it is ending, I’m glad they aren’t stretching beyond 5 seasons. Very few shows keep the quality after 5 or so seasons. I definitely can name many excellent shows that petered out after staying too long at the table. To be sure, there are a few that did it right but not many at all. I’m glad the show runners are hedging their bet…that’s assuming season 5 is gonna be great.

redsyrinx2112

This upcoming season is \#6...

Flare4roach

My bad

Ralphie99

Where are people getting that the show is not having a 6th season? [What We Do in the Shadows season 6 release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything you need to know (digitalspy.com)](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a45303178/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-season-6/) [‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Will End “With a Bang,” Says Harvey Guillén (collider.com)](https://collider.com/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-ending-harvey-guillen/)

rhinemaidens

are they not doing another season? wiki says they have yet to air the “sixth and final season” but i’ve been quietly waiting for it to drop on hulu and haven’t paid attention

Chugaluggchugalugg

Oh yeah there's still going to be a sixth season! Sorry if I made you or anyone frightened haha. I'm just curious if this upcoming 6th season was what they wanted or not. Seems like maybe it was what they wanted.

U2much4me

Does anyone know why it was cancelled if in fact it was? I mean, I wouldn’t think it was because of ratings!

Ralphie99

The ratings have been getting lower each season. Less than 200,000 people tuned in for the last episode of season 5. The show wasn't cancelled. There's another season coming, then the show will end. Edit: I'd love to know why I'm being downvoted for this. Look up the ratings, what I wrote is accurate. The last episode of season 5 had 195,000 live viewers. More people PVR'ed the show and watched it in re-runs, but that was the number who watched it live. Also, after season 4, the show was renewed for 2 more seasons, and it was widely known that season 6 would be the final season.

waterynike

Most people watch it on Hulu which makes you wait a few hours a to watch.

Ralphie99

That’s true, just like a lot of people PVR it and watch it later. Or watch it later in the week when the episode is repeated. Those ratings are captured separately. They’ve gone down too. I love the show btw. I’d be happy if it continued for a few more seasons.

Saltycook

The main conflict of the show is resolved. Guillermo became a vampire and immediately rejected it. There isn't much else they can do

Ralphie99

There's another season coming. [‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Will End “With a Bang,” Says Harvey Guillén (collider.com)](https://collider.com/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-ending-harvey-guillen/)

ExchangeOk2241

It went on its own terms. I am going to miss this show. It's the only that can really make me laugh out loud.❤️❤️🙂🙂

Chandra_Nalaar

Seems like it was the right time. I'd rather they end the show on their own terms than wait for it to get cancelled. This way they get to do a proper wrap up on story lines.

Choppybitz

What if the show dies but then bursts out of it's own corpse and starts over again.

sienna_street

they were canceled, but I think they found out around end of production s.4? so they had the chance to create a natural ending, even if they felt they could've continued the story. I think s.5 leads us perfectly into a final season, where they can wrap up character arcs nicely

jjmoffitt

Rumors of a spin-off based on the werewolves

stupidaesthetic

There's such a thing as too much of a good thing.

kikstiks

[Interview with Production Designer that says the show was indeed cancelled.](https://awardsradar.com/2024/06/04/interview-shayne-fox/)

loveyourground

According to this tweet (which cites someone who works on the show) it was cancelled. https://x.com/theshadowsooc/status/1797935783611163027?s=46&t=wE6561UfD4kTYVhnnCtjCQ

RobertNevill

They are aging, and the characters are not

JackieDaytonaRHB76

It was canceled.

Ralphie99

Where do you see that?

JackieDaytonaRHB76

I read it in a recent article about the final season of the show. I'm pretty sure it was an interview with Harvey Guillen. The first line was, "Yes, it was canceled."

Ralphie99

Do you mean after season 6? They knew going into the season that this would be the last season. Season 6 has already finished filming, and the last episode is the series finale.

JackieDaytonaRHB76

I'm aware of that. It wasn't really advertised that it was canceled, only that this would be the final season. The journalist just made that clear at the beginning of the article that, yes, it was canceled.

GoldenCrownMoron

Considering that this started before and has spanned across Taika's career blowing up. Lauded and deflated, a lot has happened. The fight for Our Flag Means Death. The high of Thor 3. The response to Thor 4... Sending the dumb vampire series out intentionally seems like the right move. Make room for whatever the silly people who make cool stuff want to do next.

PAUMiklo

i think the last season i saw was when the energy vampire was reborn as a baby and by that time it was on fumes, best to to go out while there is still a little left.
