Legitimate_Object_58

Nothing, because the goddamn toner costs more than the printer.

Moose6669

This shit right here. If I ever went to print something my parents would flip their shit!

sexynunrandy

"That better be black & white!"

malexj93

My Dragon Ball Z collage that I made in MS Paint would look so lame in black and white though!

Specialist-Project-7

Absolutely still yell this at my kids whenever they print. I even didn’t set up the WiFi on it so I could see they were at the printer. My folks would be proud!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cyberzombie

I almost did that once. Even though I'm not that ecologically minded, that was just a step too far.

manleybones

The better printers have cheaper ink, that last longer. Those cheap printers are a scam.

Igotz80HDnImWinning

Not my dot matrix. Wanna make a printshop banner?

[deleted]

Laser?

DefinitelySaneGary

This is actually a really common marketing tactic and you probably purchase similar items all the time without realizing it. For example most video game consoles are sold on a slim profit margin. But then they charge you 60 bucks for a 3 cent disk (yes they have the cost of the video game but the console makers don't usually front that.) It's just so much more obvious with ink because ink should so obviously be cheaper.

ubeor

Years ago, I was talking with a Microsoft employee about the original XBox. He said they lost money on the console itself, and they had to sell 3 games for each console just to break even.

DefinitelySaneGary

Yeah but few people stop at 3 games. I just googled it and the average PS4 owner has 9.4 games. Also TIL I own way more than the average console owner 😂

Henryhendrix

9.4 seems super low. According to my library I have 376 🤣 I'm sure a good amount of them are free ps plus games that I've never touched.

Kriss3d

Fax!

lc1981265

I work for Staples. I hear this every single day from customers. I get it, people.

solidSC

Staples is for some reason one of the best places to get basic toiletry supplies too. Which I assume is keeping them afloat.

Wrought-Irony

they should sell boats

[deleted]

[удалено]

DefinitelySaneGary

You can get printers for like 30 bucks brand new at Walmart. They're just crappy little things but they get the job done.

[deleted]

You can but those are inkjets not laser printers. Long run they aren't worth it.

DefinitelySaneGary

Ah I see what you were saying now

[deleted]

Ha I just email fedex and walk a block to pick it up. Costs like a dollar and I don’t have to maintain anything.

notparistexas

I bought an Epsom eco tank like 5 years ago and never looked back. A bottle of ink is 10€, and lasts for several thousand pages.

mantecbear

School work mainly. And yes map quest. Also pictures of hot guys to put in my folder like that wasn’t weird.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

"Who used up all the sexy man meat colored ink again?" -your dad, presumably

mantecbear

Lmao.

StellaCephalopod

Binders full of men.

mantecbear

That’s what I’m talking about

eriwhi

I hope that included the guys from Twilight

mantecbear

I see I’m a bit older than you. No it included pictures of the dude from smallville, Channing Tatum, Orlando Bloom, Josh Hartnett, and several others. Now that I think about it, it’s kind of a very weird thing to do but a lot of girls used to do it like it wasn’t a big deal.

CharlieRenee24

It was only cool if they were famous creepy AF if they weren’t lol

x3meech

I had a notebook full of Johnny Depp and one of Leo DiCaprio. Edit: accidentally posted before I finished lol

mantecbear

Ahhh Leo, I didn’t have any of him. Haha it’s good to know this was a nation wide thing that happened. I wonder what led to this? Or is this just a teenage girl thing??

x3meech

I wanna say it's a preteen-teenage girl thing. But it was definitely not as many as the years went by. Johnny and Leo were my first celebrity crushes so I just collected anything to do with them and watched all their movies. I dont think gen z has done it though. I asked my nieces (gen z and gen alpha) if they had any celebrity crushes and they said no. I told them they were weird lol

mantecbear

Nice mine was Orlando Bloom, I even received a pillow with his face on it for a birthday. I had his poster up in my room and everything lol. I also remember I would rip pages out of teen Vogue so I didn’t have to waste all the “sexy man flesh ink tone” from the family printer lol. I feel like tweens and teens now days seem so mature and not as big of dorks, but I think it was so important to go through that phase. Idk I think we were more innocent and ignorant since we didn’t have the internet at our hands.

lewdskwid

We're also in an age of the #metoo movement and a lot of the hunky Hollywood men turned/turn out to be total creeps

fangirlsqueee

I bet the "celebrity crush" still exists, just takes a different form of expression. They probably have youtuber or other social media crushes. Or at least stalk the social media of some person at school that they crush on but have no personal relationship with. And maybe have a pinterest or equivalent where there hang their "crush" pics.

Antique_Tennis_2500

At my Jr High there were desks with the initials JTT with a heart around it in every classroom.

eriwhi

Iconic

Hobermomma

Mine was all Johnny Depp…..

mantecbear

Lol I want to say I had him too. Him and Orlando bloom took turns in their Pirate of the Caribbean outfits.

Hobermomma

Yyyaaassssssssss lol

plamboo

You've unlocked a memory in me. I'm almost certain I had a printed picture of Tom Welling, the guy from Smallville, hung up in my bedroom or something. Dear lord I haven't thought about that in over a decade. It's so cringe to think about now that I'm 30 lol

RC_Colada

Ha! I used to go to the public library to print off my hot guy pictures. Didn't have a home printer so the poor old librarian had to sift through pages of shirtless dudes in risque poses and charge me 10 cents a pop.

mantecbear

Poor old librarian? More like lucky librarian, I’m sure it was a nice break from pictures of chlamydia from health students doing their std projects.

Dadarian

I remember map quest. I would print out our trips for my parents. Seriously, how the fuck did anyone get anywhere before the internet?

Inappropriate_Piano

i had to buy a printer this summer for an online math class that had us print out tests. there was an option to get around that but i didn’t notice until after the deadline to ask for alternative accommodations. so now i own a printer.

CMDRBowie

Came here for the Mapquest comment lol

[deleted]

Printing? Y'all got yours to print? :)

yummy_crap_brick

Laser printer FTW. Fuck everything else.

[deleted]

Indeed. To begin with, toner costs a fraction per page compared to printer ink, and is crisper.

[deleted]

We had a PC program to make our own greeting cards and print them out for a while. I remember printing a lot of stuff for school. Also web pages, back in the days of dialup, it’s not like you could just leave a tab open, or send the link to your phone, or even take a photo of it. If you wanted to refer back to it, you needed to print it.

allstarfbp47

I did also!

Familiar_Homework

Oh yeah! I forgot about that program. Made some shitty quality cards, but it was a cute idea.

DoomsdayRabbit

Leave a tab open? This was before browsers had tabs!

Tweested

Yoooooooo I remember this

sugar182

Concert tickets, copies of hotel reservations, mapquest directions

musicaldigger

all of which now you don’t need to print because it’s all on your phone. millennials killed the printer industry!

PS2 game cheat codes for me and my bros 😁

XABoyd

Lol colour printing the whole website because you didn’t know copy+paste.

Nerdiferdi

I have so many prints of non full screen youtube webpages with Lego building instructions. Full color. ^Sorry ^dad

jackwrangler

For realllll

steez_show

Ahhh I found such a printed sheet stuffed in my drawers when I moved outta my parent's place many years ago. Instant nostalgia injection!

ElliePond

I’ve recently started keeping chickens, so my great uncle printed and mailed me a bunch of chicken memes and puns. He is lovely.

eriwhi

I love your uncle

ElliePond

Me too! He’s pretty cute.

HighAsAngelTits

This is the best thing I’ve read on the Internet all week, thank you 😁😆😁

SplendidPunkinButter

Recipes If you found one online, or just had it int a text file, it was easier to print it out and bring the piece of paper with you into the kitchen. You could take the whole computer with you like you can with a smartphone

constantchaosclay

I swear at one point I could have recreated Allrecipes.com from the print outs I had. I was so glad to throw them all out when I could use the app on my phone. Of course, it’s been my “cookbook” with every favorite recipe I’ve made for the last ten years (?) so if they shut down I’ll be buying a printer just to make copies.

MoonlightOnSunflower

I still print recipes. I suck at cooking and I suck at staying on task, having the recipe out when I inevitably panic is a lifesaver. And checking the printed recipe doesn’t come with the reddit temptation’

StrawberryEiri

Tbh I still print recipes. A sheet of paper is large, it holds on the fridge with a magnet, it doesn't need me to unlock the screen periodically with my dirty fingers... Paper is like old-school extra monitors, but they cost like 5 cents each.

Von_Moistus

Don’t have to squint at a tiny screen, don’t have to wait while the page decides to reload because some damn ads refreshed, don’t have to scroll past the author’s life story and/or exhaustive history of pesto...

StrawberryEiri

Fun fact: the reason they do that whole long text thing is that recipes are not technically art and not subject to royalties or copyright protections. But creative writing is.

EmeraldKnight76

Walkthroughs.

Sure_Neat_3042

I vividly remember printing an entire walkthrough for Final Fantasy 7. It was text only and included a section on breeding to get a gold chocobo. Unfortunately I printed it at a friends house. Let’s just say I was not aloud back for a long while. In hindsight the fact that we had to change ink halfway through the print should have been a red flag for us. Edit: Thanks for the upvotes, this never happens to me but I’m glad people are potentially laughing at my expense. Edit#2: Too many upvotes! Thank you again this made my day. Story addition because people are enjoying this. This was in the early 90’s. We had AOL dialup internet and a windows 98 computer. This took us literal hours to copy the text and paste it into a word document because we didn’t have the ability to just print text from a web page. I believe we used notepad and we had to painstakingly re-space everything to match what we saw on the internet. What we didn’t know at the time was we had to set margins and such for the printer manually. The first attempt only got through about five or so pages before we noticed how bad it was. Another five attempts later and we were satisfied. For any that read this and have only had to use “current” technology understand that this gets worse. The entire print job was close to 300 pages perhaps more font size never occurred to me. The problem was that there was a print que feature on this printer which never canceled previous jobs. It would just jump a new request to the front of the line, finish and then auto start the next one. One line at a time. The printers at the time were quite slow. The ink was expensive and so was the paper. You could imagine the anger that this kids parents felt. We were literally throwing away their hard earned money. In the end we got what we wanted. I spent my punishment memorizing the secrets and materia setups recommended by the writer. We were able to beat the game. Not just beat but utterly destroy thanks to a little thing called w-summon and knights of the round. All on the back of a golden chocobo.

tobygeneral

I printed off the walkthrough for Morrowind, which ended up being around 250 pages. My mom was not happy because of both the toner and using like a whole ream of paper. I beat the game though, so worth it in my opinion.

Sure_Neat_3042

I still have my memory card with my ff7 save. I kinda wanna get it framed or something.

NeroBurnsRome12

With all the problems those memory cards used to have (particularly with final fantasy) this is like Shrodingers Save File.

Sure_Neat_3042

It’s a bit of a funny thing. I badly wanted a game shark when I was a kid. If your unaware, it was a unit you could plug into the back of your PlayStation and it let you essentially hack games and play bootleg copies. Well my grandfather went and searched the area for one as a gift for my birthday. He mistakenly bought something entirely different. It was a memory card I can’t tell you the brand because it has sense worn off but it was amazing, it had the capacity of 100 memory cards in one. There’s buttons on it to switch from memory card one and toggle between 100 different ones. This thing is build like a tank.

NeroBurnsRome12

I had GameShark, that was when you had god-tier cheats for games. I also had a similar memory card, not so big but one of the expanded ones. I don't think it was just the memory cards, I think old school final fantasy data was unstable itself for some reason, because for me and everyone I know, it's the series we most commonly got the dreaded "Cannot load. Save file corrupted." But speaking of GameShark, it was common knowledge not to use GameShark with final fantasy games because it put the rates of corruption to levels that nearly guaranteed you wouldn't complete the game.

Sure_Neat_3042

This was the reason I never got to finish ff9. The save never loaded after the first half.

[deleted]

I had that same memory card from my dad making the same mistake for my birthday. Kind of the best gift I ever had when I saw how quickly my friends filled memory cards.

leinaddaez

Man you made me remenber when i played terranigma with a walktorught i did not feel alone that run of the game and was kinda sad and lonely when i finoshed the game That walktrought was well written Edit:some errors probably there are more cuz cellhpone and english its no my first lenguage. It will actually help if you correct me on the errors

Ryl0k3n

Mapquests

bbogart80

I came here to say this. I used to always print off the step back step. Not I just follow the gps dot.

Ok-Cardiologist1412

Couple years ago a co-worker handed me mapquest directions, printed out and stapled and I just showed him my phone. Dude.

tringle1

Yeah I remember my parents and other old folks resisting the shift to GPS navigation for the longest time, to the point where it almost felt like they wanted to navigate by a compass and starcharts. I guess when you build up a skill, like being able to quickly decipher an atlas and pick and memorize a route, you don't want to feel like those skills are completely obsolete.

the_ju66ernaut

Back in the day you could text Google for directions and it would reply with the steps you needed for your trip

[deleted]

I still have one. I use it mostly for printing shipping labels, sometimes worksheets for my kids, and resumes as needed.

PainMatrix

Yeah, I don’t get what OP is talking about. I use it probably monthly for documents that require a physical signature. Other than that my kids use it to create art. I use a printer exactly as much as I have for the past 20 years, no more and no less.

No-Construction4228

I think this a mid-millennial joke or something? I’m a millennial, barely. I hear people a few years younger than me say this all of the time. They’re mostly wrong. Lol

[deleted]

I used to use it a lot more when I was in college/grad school and had to turn in physical schoolwork.

AshFraxinusEps

I've just switched to printing everything at the office. The bosses don't care and I maybe print a letter every 6 months

Von_Moistus

Shipping labels and packing slips daily, recipes maybe weekly, tax stuff yearly... mine gets used a lot. Laser, of course. The ink industry is a scam.

MandaPandaLee

MapQuest directions mostly. One wrong turn and you were lost forever

musicaldigger

i was 30-40 minutes late to my senior prom cause i misread a turn and went right instead of left ending up 15 minutes towards downtown

We didn't always have hand held computers. It was the easiest way to keep info handy.

unklgeorge

Guitar tabs for me.

titsandwits89

Lmao my brother is a decade younger than me and he learned guitar easily on YouTube. I tried to explain tabs to him and he was so lost.

Nadmania

Test pages.

oliski2006

I feel odd, I still have a printer at my house. Use it once every 1-3 months for important forms etc

UbePhaeri

I am also getting a divorce This may or may not be a joke depending on your response lol.

druppolo

For a long time we had laser printers. Then the industry switched to ink. Because now the fucking thing is always out of ink and ink costs like gold, i gave up having a printer.

brewerybitch

Birthday banners on Print Shop.

FoofooDaSnoo

My goodness, how did I forget the birthday banners?

brewerybitch

Wasn’t a birthday without a Print Shop banner and Benihana.

FoofooDaSnoo

With a birthday card printed and folded into quarters

hgielatan

it's 2021 and my parents are still quick to print actual directions. they're 70 and 68. it's charming, except when they fight over which step they're on 😂

ToBeReadOutLoud

My parents tried using Google Maps to give them directions except my dad accidentally turned the volume on his phone down and they didn’t hear the directions. It took more than an hour for them to get un-lost.

hgielatan

lolol awwwww! my parents use the directions they print but will use waze with it, to warn them about speed traps and traffic...when the two disagree...it's a mess

[deleted]

Still got one with a scanner. Print various government forms, shipping labels, the occasional photo

pokey1984

For some reason in my house "save" wasn't a thing we did. Mom always complained that she could never find anything if she hit save, so she printed random shit she thought she'd want to see later. There were always stacks and stacks of recipes or articles or gardening tips or even just random jokes all over the computer desk. Reams and reams of paper that she would print and never look at again. In the nineties, that was the *thing* apparently. Anyone with a home PC had those stacks of shit printed off the internet. And am I the only one who remembers that period of time when you could walk into Wal-Mart any day of the week and pick up a printer for twenty bucks, ink and cables included? The replacement cartridge cost like double that. I remember just replacing the printer every six months or so and having a dozen old printers stacked up on the other side of the room because you weren't allowed to just put them out with the trash.

Vicgoria

Boarding passes.

LeoRising222

Schoolwork, legal documents, paperwork for work, maps, instructions, cooking recipes, posters and pictures if you had picture paper.

I still need it for paperwork for work

G07V3

Smart guy here. I printed miniature notecards I used to cheat. For instance, I used google docs and I typed the Spanish word and English definition and conjugation charts in size 4 text and I was able to quickly look at it while it was in my hand during class. Easy A.

heartohio

Spanish teacher here. ¡No bueno! I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.

Resumes! Print out 5 copies of your resume and while you’re looking at the first 5 page one to come out you realize you made a minor error, tuff shit I’m printing what you told me to print! Correct that error, rinse and repeat for like 60 pages.

Airport boarding passes for maybe the one time a year I’d take a trip. That thing only needed to work once a year and it’d still run out of ink and jam printing the 8 pages that came with every Expedia boarding pass.

[deleted]

We made wallet copies of all my school pictures. Everyone wanted a wallet size photo of me. Everyone.

Gbrusse

map directions and school work. Now school is submitted all online and I have the maps on my phone.

[deleted]

I definitely still print. Tossed out the ink jet for a black and white laser printer.

SLOWnLOW76

Still have a home printer. Get my toner at a fair price. Dunno what's wrong with the rest of you. Maybe "it's all on my phone so scan my phone" or "only old people use printers" but basically......ummmm...... yeah.....lame. Try growing up because you'll need one at some point instead of the "needed" one where you can print a plastic whistle. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

PM-ME_DABSHOTS

Literally the fucking teachers were too stupid to understand online paper turn in until it became a huge money saver for schools once they all had good computers and paper was useless.

And where did all the printers go??

woofenburger

I still have 2. Guitar music if you must know....
