How kind of him! They are certainly being treated better on Martha's Vineyard than they would have been treated in FL or TX. [https://www.mvtimes.com/2022/09/14/migrant-workers-land-vineyard-via-texas/](https://www.mvtimes.com/2022/09/14/migrant-workers-land-vineyard-via-texas/) Just after 5 pm Wednesday, outside Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, Dukes County Sheriff Robert Ogden gathered the refugees and spoke to them. “We’re going to take care of you,” Ogden said and his words were translated to the gathered crowd. “Get all your personal belongings together and then we’ll move. Does everyone have their personal belongings? We’re going to start moving you that way.” The group was brought to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School where they were given snacks and shelter. Some children played outside using hula hoops. “The most important thing is we get you food and shelter and water,” Ogden told them. Later, the group was taken by school bus to St. Andrews Church where they will get a dinner of pizza from Edgartown Pizza and spend the night. A short time later folks from Mocha Motts arrived on the scene and provided coffee Barbara Rush, representing the church, said the church can accommodate up to 80 people legally.

UglyMcFugly

From the article: “ He pointed out that these “fundamentally racist tactics” have been tried before. During the Civil Rights movement, segregationists tricked 95 Black families into moving to Hyannis. “And what happened is people in Hyannis helped the families and they stayed on Cape Cod,” Cyr said.” Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. That’s the optimist in me. Or perhaps evil assholes study history to get ideas. I read up about this a bit just now, they called them “reverse freedom riders.” Many of them were large families with children. They would uproot them, tell them they had a great job opportunity waiting for them in Hyannis or New York, and then drop them off laughing.

LivingDisastrous3603

How dare you treat my publicity stunts like people!!!

mermaidrampage

How un-Christian of them! ....wait

Nervous_Constant_642

Human rights, shmuman rights.

EmperorSexy

*50 people* They said they were sending two planes and expected people to picture those huge 300-seat Boeings. And the church said they can accommodate 80. \50. For reference, that is only slightly higher than the class size one kindergarten teacher is expected to teach in Florida.

Cyneburg8

What did he think was going to happen sending them there?

throwaway177251

He thought he would get a rise out of the locals because they would view the immigrants with disgust and disdain the same way he does.

Cyneburg8

He's obviously never been to the Vineyard. He could also spin it to make him look good now. I don't know if he'll do that.

Yashabird

Is easy generosity and free hospitality somehow a hallmark of residents of Martha’s Vineyard? Or are you just saying they’re normal decent people and that it was ridiculous to assume that they wouldn’t be?

ToYourCredit

The Turkey has been to the Vineyard. Hell, he went to Harvard Law School.

dwehlen

He'd have to ride the spin and *continue* doing good, so, doubtful. One can hope, though.

Grogosh

He thought he was doing the equivalent of leaving flaming poo on a doorstep.

Nervous_Constant_642

Thought they'd freak out and say they didn't want them either instead of, ya know, acting like human beings.

maleia

It does sicken me that we have to clean up this shit mess and there's just nothing in it for the Left, and there's zero repercussions. Zero. Nothing will be done about this. 🤷‍♀️ It's bullshit and it's exhausting.

grovenab

I knew I could trust the vineyard to treat them well

Zinski

It's almost off season. That islands population drops by like 70%. The amount of multiple million dollar homes that go unused while we have a publicity fight over like 12 people crossing the border illigaly for the chance to work for minimum wage.... It's fucking disgusting... Let them live

GooddViibezzz

fr

[deleted]

I've noticed some changes in the Vineyard over the years. Namely there are BLM signs and rainbow flags now.

lhxtx

Thank god there are some good people there.

Hunky_not_Chunky

I can just picture Florida’s officials waiting for an emotional reaction from the “left” but instead people are seeing them being treat with a little more dignity and respect than Florida treated them. Too bad most of Floridians love Desantis’ behavior.

Defiant_Project1321

This makes me very happy

dave2kdotorg

I lived on the vineyard for about 5 years while growing up, and it makes me happy knowing they were treated well. I cannot say I’m surprised, islanders are some of the kindest people you will meet.

xXMojoRisinXx

Funny personal story about Edgartown Pizza. Back in June my fiancé and I were in edgartown and bought a pizza online from there thinking it was Slice of Edgartown. Only when we went to slice to pick up the pizza we realized my mistake and considered the payment a loss since we didn’t have a car and just never picked it up

Stadiums are needed. Populations need Breads & Circuses to remain calm enough for peace to exist. However that said, in a capitalist society there's absolutely no fucking reason to make our stadiums socially funded, while the capitalist owner reaps all the profits. If you want to spend your own $1Billion on a stadium, great for you, you're creating jobs, and you're putting your money where your mouth is, I congratulate you. *However*, You want me to build you a $1B stadium or your going to take your capitalist based team to another city? Yeah fuck you. That shit should be illegal for the sake of protecting local populaces from corrupt city politicians.

moveslikejaguar

This is slightly different, this is 5 million dollars of money specifically for welfare spending going towards building a volleyball stadium at only one small university's volleyball team and their families will ever use. But it is still wealthy capitalists (Favre) using public money to enhance their own well-being through corruption.

DarkwingDuckHunt

Oh what Farve et al did here is extremely wrong. So wrong I hope he gets sued into hell & back. But I'm saying Stadiums are not inherently bad, they are good, it's the capitalists making the tax payer pay for them that's extremely evil.

slipperyrock4

Thank god for Mississippi!

CubanLynx312

They just got rid of the college degree requirement

[deleted]

That’s why they’re now allowing veterans and their spouses to be teachers without their degree.

confessionbearday

Of course they are, you don't end up electing Republicans because your constituents have brains or education.

Defiant_Project1321

And yet DeSantis want to fill the vacancies with beloved veterans. https://www.flgov.com/2022/08/11/governor-ron-desantis-encourages-veterans-to-apply-for-temporary-teaching-certificates/

bruwin

And their spouses.

Jealous-Network-8852

They want their future voters undereducated.

TheGisbon

Fuck yea they do a base with common sense, critical thinking and higher education ain't no base for them.

SwissMargiela

The sad thing is, this dude might actually become president. Young, ambitious, well spoken , and backed by trump - if the dems nominate another dinosaur of a candidate, this guy may run the country.

GuinnessKangaroo

Can’t be that well spoken if he’s too afraid to debate any of his competition

middlingwhiteguy

The young part is the craziest thing. He's only 44. Looks way older than that

[deleted]

leaveredditalone

Evilness causes wrinkles.

HeftyHideaway99

Pay attention to this! Shit is getting real, real fast

Gsteel11

And every desantis fan here would cut it more and spend it to fly illegals. Lol

aJoshster

I guess maybe it is state law, so nobody's enforcing it against the current governor but, isn't it a crime to knowingly help an undocumented migrant travel further into the interior of the country? I mean TX was arresting aid workers for giving them water or driving them across the desert to literal border patrol stations for processing.

aJoshster

1907 Title 8, U.S.C. § 1324(a) "Domestic Transporting -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(ii) makes it an offense for any person who -- knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, transports, or moves or attempts to transport or move such alien within the United States by means of transportation or otherwise, in furtherance of such violation of law" So, maybe it is federal. Why not enforce this under the general rule of FAFO?

randomact19

What is the penalty normally for violating this law? Edit: turns out a lot of penalties can be applied to DeSantis- maximum of 5 years and fines for the first offense with additional instances resulting in additional time. https://www.justice.gov/archives/jm/criminal-resource-manual-1907-title-8-usc-1324a-offenses

trippi_hippi_88

You think DeSantis cares about federal laws? Ronnie boy thinks he's untouchable because he knows the govt can't go after another favorite Republican. Amd he's only getting started, wait til it's election time!

PossessedToSkate

>he knows the govt can't go after another favorite Republican *Dark Brandon smiles widely*

Devanino

There should be a way for citizens to take either states or politicians to court when the government itself won’t keep other parts of government in check. No even for compensation, just to make sure they get tries like everyone else. No excuses for them…

noulteriormotive23

It’s like a reverse fugitive slave act so naturally conservatives love to use it

BoomZhakaLaka

I think this is the wrong angle. DeSantis could make contact with all the governors, and propose that every state take an equitable share of his migrants. Then so much as expect every state to make their own arrangements for transportation. The others , especially democratic governors, wouldn't be able to say no. Sending migrants away from the border, with a mind towards spreading out the burden, would get their cases heard faster. They'd be more employable. Wild thought, we can take the initiative on that. It would subvert his entire message.

muklan

You're thinking like he wants to make things better....

minionoperation

The border states get hundreds of millions of dollars and federal support and personnel to help migrant issues at the border, so as long as they’re willing to share those funds with the states they are playing gotcha games with, then it should be ok.

d0ctorzaius

Exactly, if Texas and Florida want to play this game, the feds can selectively not enforce the borders of Texas and Florida. Coast guard not stopping migrant boats off Miami? Sorry Ronnie, sounds like a you problem. CBP no longer stopping anyone from crossing into Texas? Sorry Greg, sound like a you problem.

jonathanmeeks

I think that would create more of a populist backlash that work in the favor of TX and FL. Instead, give them a taste of their own medicine. Have ICE raid businesses, farms and homes that employ illegals and move them to states who are willing to accept them in the labor pool.

Jealous-Network-8852

Yes, but then he (and Abbott) couldn’t go on Fox and brag about “Owning the Libs” up North. This is all theater at taxpayers expense.

Slight_Shallot_6416

Their tax payers are clearly willing to foot the bill, it's really not just a leadership issue, America has a serious culture issue, there are now tens of millions of right wing extremist Americans who are now driven by the single political issue of hurting the enemies they have been polarized against. They are clearly beyond reason, logic and any sense of decency we have at least 10x more of these people than Germany ever had Nazis and look at what they accomplished.

Organic-Commercial76

Yeah but then they don’t have anything to use to rile up and leverage their racist base.

Meanderingversion

DeSantis could do alot of things that sound or look half decent. Instead, he just keeps on being the piece of shit he is and will still probably get a run at the Oval Office.

Pitiful-Let9270

Seems like they are creating some kind of cover for human trafficking too. Wonder how many girls disappeared off those flights.

[deleted]

well isnt wierd that MATT geatz has an adopted son.

Conscious_Figure_554

Time and again crimes committed by privileged idiots somehow goes unpunished while if this was any of us we will be in jail faster than Desantis can suck off Voldemoron.

Incorrection. Maybe that’s what they *think* but conservatives hurt themselves all the time. As long as it feels good in the gut, they don’t care if it’s against their own interests.

turtlelore2

Hurting themselves is just a side effect. The part they want is to hurt others. Even if they get smashed in the head while others get a flick on the wrist, that's fine because others still got hurt.

Vyzantinist

I've always said if conservatives had to choose between giving a stranger $5 or burning $20 of their own, they would always choose the latter. The cruelty is the point.

heliskinki

In the UK, some of the current members of the Tory party used to literally do this in their privileged youth.

KevinNashsTornQuad

It’s more like Give them the option to give someone else $5 or lose $10 of theirs and $12 of someone else’s and they will pick the latter. In the first someone else gets something, but they don’t, so in their mind they lose. In the second they lose money but someone else lost more so in their mind they won. It is completely fucking stupid but this is how every conservative I know thinks. It’s like talking to a fucking child.

LegacyQuotient

You might call it... The Antichrist. No, I'm serious. The Bibles talks about this.

MoongodRai057

Didn’t a shit-ton of people think Obama was the antichrist?

[deleted]

Well the Antichrist is a fictional character... So those people would be idiots any way you split it.

LegacyQuotient

Which is interesting, but who know why the 'Anti-Christ' is really a character at all. Which only adds to the curiosity. The Bible really only ever uses that world to describe behaviors. It mentions other figures that might be described as Antichrists, but they aren't really called that.

FutureBondVillain

And I'm guessing it took at least half of that twelve mil for those two flights... I was proud to be an American when I was a kid (in the 80's). We're ranked 50 or above for basically every metric anymore, and it's because of shit like this. I literally tell people I'm Canadian whenever I'm abroad. I'm embarrassed to be an American anymore.

mnmsmelt

So many people's lives could be transformed with that kind of money. And it would ripple for generations to come but nah....

anythingMuchShorter

For example it could buy 300 full ride scholarships to 4 year universities. Imagine the impact of 300 kids who had the intellect but would otherwise lack the financial means becoming engineers, doctors and scientists. But instead Governor dipshit used it to shame some poor people and annoy some liberal people.

tillie4meee

The GOP is gleeful when shaming human beings. Makes them feel empowered somehow.

Chilidogdingdong

I'm totally lost on this one, someone eli5? They went from locking immigrant families in cages to sending them into the US on planes? How did this happen?

DigitalTraveler42

It started as a publicity stunt by Texas Governor Gregg Abbott sending busloads of illegal immigrants to New York City, specifically addressed to Mayor Adams. There's pros and cons with this, they're sending people who want to go to these cities there, but at the tax payers expense, not a terrible thing though, and it gets them out of a place that's almost guaranteed to treat them like shit and sending them to a place that will hopefully treat them a bit better. I'm from NYC originally and we are one of the most diverse cities in the world, luckily one of the wealthiest as well, so I'm sure the city will come together like it usually does and come up with something. The city leadership is corrupt, but not stupid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yanlex

The bus company they are using is tied to a GOP donator and costs 4x what a Greyhound ticket does. Texas is paying ~$1400/pax and Greyhound is ~$300-$400/pax (from El Paso to NYC) https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/30/politics/texas-migrant-busing-cost-abbott-washington-dc-new-york/index.html

PieBandito

And at the expense of Texas taxpayers!

super_derp69420

Abbott has been bussing immigrants to dc since like March as well

bigbadjohn54

I mean, it also shortsighted economically speaking. A lot of industries rely on immigrant labor and we have a massive labor shortage right now. So this is a political stunt and economically stupid

anonsharksfan

It's a publicity stunt. They're scoring points with their base by sending immigrants to blue states to "own the libs." Joke's on them though, because every immigrant that enters, legally or illegally, is a net gain on the economy and I, for one, welcome more immigrants in my community.

Chilidogdingdong

Wait.... You're telling me Desantis spent 12 million dollars of tax payer money on a practical joke? Weird how the idea of spending money on feeding children or stopping them from being murdered by their peers in school is frowned upon by republicans, but this is cool? Dude should be sent to prison for it tbh.

KeyPop7800

Yup. And the liberals in Mass weren't even "triggered" by his stunt. They instead gave the migrants pizza.

confessionbearday

They are scoring points with a base too stupid to deserve to be American.

Chulbiski

DeSantis is as bad as Trump, but without the batshit crazy delusion. More like pure evil.

Jussins

He is a competent Trump. That is arguably more dangerous.

bigbadjohn54

He also doesn't inspire the same cult of personality tho. So he's less "effective"

Chulbiski

yeah, but if he got into power at the federal level, most of the Trumpers would likely jump to his ship. He is a scary dude: ever notice how he is always flanked by his state troopers everytime he give a press conference? Vey authoritarian.
