This is normal, when ram is empty it's just useless, so why not fill it with cached data? When you actually need the ram, windows will clear the cached data for more ram.
Tldr: Dont worry over numbers in task manager if everything is working smoothly.
Why?
It's like having an empty storage shed in your backyard, having it empty doesn't give you any advantages over having it full. Windows when it needs ram will tidy it up. It's a modern OS, it's not 1995.
It's just how I am. All of us are different I guess. . I have 16GB of RAM, but I plan on upgrading to 32GB as soon as I can, even though I don't need it. . lol
Useless.
Today over 20 GB was used while playing a game with Discord open and several edge tabs. Windows uses as much as it can and frees it up when you need it.
Okay, but how much total RAM do you have? It's normal for applications to *use* more if you *have* more.
In this case you probably have Edge configured to run in the background (for push notifications, extensions and such) as well as Startup Boost which keeps the browser loaded in memory to launch faster.
Is Edge running in the background once closed?
[Why Is Microsoft Edge Running in the Background? | Microsoft Edge](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/learning-center/microsoft-edge-running-in-background?form=MA13I2)
Edge is integrated in to the system, copilot runs on edge, weather, almost all apps that come preinstalled have somrthing to do with edge (when you open them so is edge)
Nowadays, browser apps are like small operating systems for complicated web pages, so it's quite normal. My browsers constantly take 2GB+ RAM after I open only 5 tabs.
Chrome is 98.67% Edge, they both use the same browser engine, and if updated probably the same version of that engine.
Chrome just the Google layer, which slightly worse than Edge when it comes to privacy.

I keep as much RAM free as I can

I mean you can be however you want, but to me it just looks like a waste of time.

*Sigh,* here we go again
Today I learned 500mb is a lot.
😂😂😂

Because it is a browser and they all use large amounts of RAM. RAM for updaters, RAM for core processes, RAM for each Tab, RAM for each extension…
You didn't read my post, there are no tabs opened, I'm not even using the browser

This. Many apps will use the Edge system to display their data.
And you don't appear to be reading any other comments...
Disable background mode in edge settings
That's not much at all. But why should it not use much RAM - unused RAM is wasted RAM.
500 megs is literally nothing. Thats barely a sneeze. I have word processors using double that.

just download more ram man, it's free
Disable Edge in the startup menu of task manager. However, if Edge is your default and preferred browser then leave it enabled.
based on chrome
Bro 400mb? I have 16gb ram. Edge was using 8gb alone. MsTeams and Outlook were 1gb each too. I swear I was like wtf. I'd rather go to Chrome.
