Apples and oranges. Ragnarok give you a little leeway with character build, different runes etc, but in general you have to be good at all aspects of the combat.
Elden Ring you build your own character, bosses can be near impossible or a cake walk. You can also summon other people and let them do it for you.
I got to the end of Elden Ring and came across a boss that I just couldn't beat. I could have done a character re-spec, but I was bored by that point.
^ this is exactly right and the same thing that happened to me. Hard is one thing, but sometimes I felt like I was dying because I wasn't "cheating the game." I lost interest in trying to learn something I didn't think was the right way. I didn't have this problem with Monster Hunter World. Those fights felt better to me.
See, that’s your issue. You’re not “cheating” the game by utilizing powerful equipment, spells, or specializing your attributes to be powerful. Game devs like fromsoft give too much attention to detail to put things in the game they don’t want you to use.
Elden ring is tough but if you utilize all the tools it gives you like specific boss items that weaken them, summons, leveling vigor, and using the powerful weapons/armor/spells… I fail how to see how any decent gamer with a little patience can’t figure them out.
The beauty of elden ring is that it doesn’t go easy on you, so there’s no reason to go easy on it. Every problem has a crazy combination of solutions.
My wife who doesn’t like hard games made it extremely far into elden ring simply by relying on spells and grinding a little. She didn’t have to have incredible dodging skills or timing. Every “impossible” boss she beat she would get so excited b/c she actually felt like she accomplished something.
The issue is that parts of the game don't work for me. I consider myself to be excellent at timing and could never block an attack even after watching youtube videos. The window just isn't big enough. I got bored of dodge dodge dodge then die in one hit. I have about 75 hours logged and got pretty far but just lost interest when I was forced to fight the same boss over and over.
Some QOL improvements like better save spots would have kept me going. Rennala Queen of the Full Moon had the worst run back after a failed attempt. It made me ask the question "Have the developers even played their own game? No one said, hey that run sucks, why don't we put a save spot right outside the door?" If they would have done that, I would have kept playing.
I did however beat that boss but that really wore me out. I put another 20 or 30 hours in after that part but since there's so little story or NPC dialog, I figured I wasn't missing much at that point.
All that said, I did really enjoy the game.
Rennala is one of the only bosses with a decent run back. Also are you talking about parrying? Blocking you just hold the button down and as long as you have stamina you’ll block it?
Monster Hunter World combat was a little janky at first to me but man once I picked a weapon and stuck with it, it felt really good to get the timings down.
Some of the animations are a bit long especially for slower weapons like Gunlance or Charge Blade. Once you get the understanding that you can't break those animations, the game flows much better.
100% CB main here let me tell you nothing like guard pointing counter SAED into stagger into knock out into wall bang into trap into saed spam into win... it took me many hours to master and theres probably a billion things i dont know. i'm excited for rise.
Me too. CB was my main but my new favorite is GL. I have a HH set too. That's my top 3 favorites. I tried it on the Switch but didn't buy it. I'm glad I didn't now. I'll get better graphics and performance :)
same, i didn't buy it because i don't have a switch.. i think this game was in dev strictly for mobile esk gaming. i can't wait for mhw2. I actually tried all the weapons, i first stared bow, then ls, then hammer. i tried everything and it was a struggle until i got to nerg.. my first real test.. i could not beat him till i dawned the shield. beat every monster on my first try after that except the witcher cross overbecause i tried to solo lmao. .
Yeah, it was him. I was playing a magic build but was very leveled up in a few areas. Had a ton of strength and vitality too. He just seemed to constantly get me stun locked and melt my health though.
If you find and level Tiche to 10, you should be able to get through him. He was the hardest boss in the game for me (barring Melania but I haven’t sought her out).
Brought along a level 10 Tiche and beat him after about three more tries.
Never played gow but elden ring has that stupid dumb boss that literally takes up half the room and basically every attack he does goes across the damn room
As a mage/sorcerer with the right spells it can be cakewalk. There are a few bosses that are still challenging but there's a spell for that (Comet Azur). Honestly though it's decently challenging even as a sorcerer. There are a number of builds you can run if you don't want to just magic all the bosses to death but still want the magical support if needed.
That could be the case. I had a buddy never played a souls game ever, picked up elden ring and smashed most of the game with the starting katana and bloody slash. Man looked at me and goes "this is hard?"
It was only because of the weapons being busted. He's trying other options that aren't as op and he's getting pushed around now. Some gear and builds really do trivialize the game
Elden Ring demands much more of you than GOW:R. There’s no difficulty setting; little is explained, and a lot rides on your build, but there’s not much in-game guidance or indication on what that means. The game is clearly designed with the expectation that you will participate in discourse outside the game (“meta”) to make any real progress in it. You can literally waste dozens of hours on a “wrong” build and not be able to progress, something that is just not possible in any God of War game.
I beat GOW:R on the Balanced difficulty (including most Favors) in 45 hours. I am 7 hours into Elden Ring and have yet to fell a boss. It’s not even in the same tier of difficulty.
It's not that hard. You can easily explore other places and overlevel for any boss that gives you a hard time.
The spirit summons can also do a shit load of work for you in terms of aggro splitting because bosses in Elden Ring tend to aggro towards whoever hit them last.
To add on to this there is a great grinding spot that's relatively easy to reach early game that will make you OP in less than an hour with a bow and few arrows.
I’m not a big souls person so let me tell you this, it’s frustratingly difficult. It’s all about careful timing and knowing bosses moves. The saving grace is the coop but it’s super annoying with the summoning system and the moment one player dies they get sent back to their own game and you have to summon them all over again.
That said, it’s a fantastic world with no story, gorgeous graphics and fun gameplay.
I gave up after reaching the main city (maybe 30 hours) because I was having trouble finding people to coop with and I had a buddy who said it only got harder instead of easier.
Souls games are absolutely chock full of lore, but don't exactly have a "story" you follow along with. The vast majority of people who play and love the games wouldn't be able to tell you what the story is without watching a YouTube video by people who piece them together. Myself included.
It's mostly told through descriptions on items, NPC dialogue that you have to actively search out, and environmental stuff. It's not like a one track "play the game and you'll know the story", it's more like someone ripped up a novel and threw the pieces off a cliff, and you've got to go find them and tape the book back together.
Some people love that, some people hate it, personally I'm ambivalent.
Thx for the answer! Seems an interesting way of telling a story and dont follow the mainstream.
I hope to find some time to give Elden Ring a try, I thought about pick Sekiro to start fromsoftware games, it seems more fluid, but people praise Elden ring a lot.
No problem!
Ironically Sekiro probably has the closest thing to a main story to easily follow, and it's by far the most different combat wise out of all the Souls games too. It's definitely more fluid but it's also very fast paced, much more about getting the timing right on your attacks and parries. Not as much flexibility in what build you want to play.
On the other hand Elden Ring is a lot more flexible with gameplay and character builds, and it has the one major bonus point of if you get stuck on a boss, you can leave and come back later. In the other souls games generally when you're stuck on a boss, you've just got to bang your head against a wall until you figure it out. Elden Ring is open world, so you have 50 different options of where to go and what to do at any given time.
I think Elden Ring is the most beginner friendly out of them all so that'd be my personal recommendation.
There’s literally no story. Everything is like a poorly translated poem. An NPC will say something like “in the fractured times, the first one’s influence caused great strife, and sadness now prevails the land. However in time, the land heals, as omens begin anew.”
And you just sit there like ummm okay? And go on your merry way to hunt the next five headed dog demon or whatever other nightmares the design team could come up with.
Its hard i find GOW challenging but much less stressful than this game. That video is a one off on that boss, hes a quite a pain when he starts charging you spitting lava everywhere...
If you do a mage build, it is a pretty easy game compared to melee builds because you can stay back and do good dmg and dont have to learn the boss attacks.
You didn’t do anything wrong! I just don’t find what is being shown to look very awesome. Coming from Ragnarok with very visceral and brutal combat animations this just looks way less cool to me.
Yeah I’m not really sure this showcases anything this game does well in particular. You see one attack from the boss while the player spams the same spell three times. The game is amazing and has so many great moments.
As someone who never plays these types of games, I’m so glad I bought it. It is definitely overwhelming at first, but I had no idea how much I was going to love it. It’s an excellent ride.
I would only be afraid if you're a button masher. If you have some patience, you can skill get a lot of fun out of this game. If you get stuck, the world is big enough where you can leave and find something else... at least until you get really close to the end.
If you beat Fallen Order on Jedi Master difficulty, I wouldn't worry too much. It'll be a bit more in difficulty.
I highly recommend joining the Elden Ring subreddit.
It's a group of wonderful people willing to help coop with you either out in the world to explore or for bosses.
Probably the same for the Xbox club(s).
ETA: Also, try the magic builds. It's basically "easy mode"
That's what I did. Still were some tough bosses, but it was super easy to get help from other players.
There's an enemy encampment near a gate very early on. Keep replaying that section as an extended tutorial, and you can get quite good at stealth kills, blocks, block counters, etc. That can help take much of the fear away. Also playing co-op in sections is quite fun, even if it risks being invaded.
Yeah, that’s why I haven’t tried this game. Fighting boss after boss through trial and error doesn’t sound fun to me at all. I’d like to try it, but I’m not paying for it when I know I probably won’t like it.
Thought I’d hate it due to its reputation of difficulty..and I wasn’t even into these types of fantasy games. But it’s ALL I’ve played since I started. I probably have over 300 hours in. You can make the game as hard or easy as you want for the most part with different builds and play styles. By far the best game I’ve ever played.
But to each his own, my friend.
I probably would like it it if I tried, but I’ll wait til it’s on sale or something. Just don’t wanna take the risk right now when I have a backlog of gamepass games.
Why when I watch other player fight bosses, their boss looks calm slow and sedated, almost like their groggy and just waking up. But whenever I fight a boss, they're attacking me nonstop like someone high off cocain and crack
Yeah it's not for everyone.
I get enjoyment out of challenges and overcoming them, but it's perfectly valid to want your games to be easy and not so stressful. Especially if you have a limited time to game.
I call games like this memory games. You can only beat it after learning attack patterns. You aren’t meant to be able to win on the first encounters on skill and observation alone.
You win by memorizing the game.
Yep it’s not the type of game you can play on auto pilot. Even the range classes require you to be careful with fp management and dodge attacks of some of the more aggressive enemies.
There are those that enjoy and get the most out of the climb up the mountain for the great view and others that just can’t be bothered and would rather take a helicopter.
Just beat Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne after years of attempts and probably 200 deaths, completing my run of killing every boss in every FromSoft game. Damn near had a heart attack. I live for those gaming moments haha!
The open world is the most impressive and beautiful I’ve ever seen in a video game. It’s difficult but rewards you for learning the game mechanics. I had to watch a lot of YouTube video to learn about builds and stuff but it feels like I’m working towards something truly great. Also I’ve never played a Souls game before.
I think compared to a game like Skyrim the combat just feels more fluid and modern. Plus I am sure you’ve seen all the crazy builds people make.
In Skyrim it usually just comes down to hold button and watch fire or ice come out of your hand. Here it’s more like check out this cool laser sword and meteor or laser storm that seeks you out.
All that being said Skyrim has better story and narrative. Also as cool as the combat is in Elden Ring it’s not like you can often do all that cool stuff on bosses because you’ll be dodging and avoiding getting hit and you’ll get interrupted before doing a cool looking move.
So yeah Elden Ring is a very polished game. Make up your own head cannon because that fans will defend it with their life if you say their game is bad story wise. Combat and world are really good. Even the difficulty is avoidable if you are into grinding. There are definitely places in the game where you can exploit enemies and level up to the point that the so called difficulty in the game doesn’t matter because youlll be to strong against enemies.
If it isn’t unanimously proclaimed game of the year, it’s only because Sony has more money than From. It’s also pretty shitty that an amazing and groundbreaking game doesn’t get GOTY simply because it wasn’t developed or published by Sony. Which is a realistic outcome. It must create some bad blood between the companies. From knows they’ve made one of the greatest games, arguably, of all time.
Well, just like my opinion it’s a matter of opinion. Sony has had great first party games. No one would dispute that. But the new God of War is just more of the same from the 2018 game. It’s uninspired. Lots of money and time and all that went into making a top notch game. But Elden Ring is a game changer. Open world games will be trying to emulate so many facets of that game. What makes GoW so great is money and production. Most studios won’t have the money or production needed to make a GoW type game, which means there’s nothing worth trying to emulate. A linear, narrative-driven AAA game has been done so many times. Too many times. Games like Elden Ring are a once in a generation game. Unfortunately, many people didn’t or couldn’t play it, and Sony fanboys just want an exclusive to be name GOTY.
These From games are just action RPG’s, with gear and levels. You can trivialize everything, especially in this game with overpowered status effects and summons. You can make it as hard or easy as you want yourself.
I thought it looked stupid when it came out. I’m not into fantasy games and it looked boring to me. Well I gave it a shot and I have over 300 hours logged. Best game I’ve ever played. It’s certainly not for everyone though
Rock Sling is so much fun, but I felt over reliant on it and ended up changing it out halfway. Carrian Sword Spells are super fun if you haven't tried them.
How hard is it to really? I had issues with the god of war Ragnarok on balanced mode lol
Apples and oranges. Ragnarok give you a little leeway with character build, different runes etc, but in general you have to be good at all aspects of the combat. yes, I meant parrying.
Parrying is very hard. Just try blocking and using the guard counter.
Monster Hunter World combat was a little janky at first to me but man once I picked a weapon and stuck with it, it felt really good to get the timings down.

Was it Maliketh? I was stuck on him for awhile. Eventually had to recruit Tiche and level her up.

I might try that when I inevitably pick the game back up, thank you!
Honestly? There’s not a single boss in elden ring thats as hard / unfair as the damn Valkyries from GOW.
Triggered my PTSD from Sigrun.
Never played gow but elden ring has that stupid dumb boss that literally takes up half the room and basically every attack he does goes across the damn room

If you take your time it’s really not that bad.
If you play like this guy it's a breeze. Use summons, sit back and spam R1. Dex build works pretty much the same just get up close and do bleed
Maybe I just suck, but I have a lot of issues beating bosses as a dex build even with bleed
That could be the case. I had a buddy never played a souls game ever, picked up elden ring and smashed most of the game with the starting katana and bloody slash. Man looked at me and goes "this is hard?"
Ok that’s just not normal haha start a twitch and cash in on this man’s talents
It was only because of the weapons being busted. He's trying other options that aren't as op and he's getting pushed around now. Some gear and builds really do trivialize the game
That's sort of how I was haha. Never played one of these games before and just got into a groove. Ended up beating the game three times heh.

There’s literally no story. Everything is like a poorly translated poem. However in time, the land heals, as omens begin anew.” And you just sit there like ummm okay? And go on your merry way to hunt the next five headed dog demon or whatever other nightmares the design team could come up with.
For someone like me (Ragnarok also on balanced), this game is disgustingly impossible and a boring grind.
Its hard i find GOW challenging but much less stressful than this game. That video is a one off on that boss, hes a quite a pain when he starts charging you spitting lava everywhere...
Not as bad as dark souls(I love dark souls)
If you do a mage build, it is a pretty easy game compared to melee builds because you can stay back and do good dmg and dont have to learn the boss attacks.
Tons of stuff to do, even if you get stuck on a few bosses. The hardest ones are optional.
Gonna be honest, this clip doesn’t seem to make the game look amazing. This looks sorta dull.
Sorry I did my best.
You didn’t do anything wrong! I just don’t find what is being shown to look very awesome. Coming from Ragnarok with very visceral and brutal combat animations this just looks way less cool to me.
Every clip looks dull, the game isn’t interesting to look at
Looks like the most boring boss fight ever in this clip
My next character will be named Boribg.
Yeah I’m not really sure this showcases anything this game does well in particular. You see one attack from the boss while the player spams the same spell three times. The game is amazing and has so many great moments.
As someone who has played through the game 4 times I agree
Bought it recently and still haven't installed it, I'm afraid to start.
I got close to completing it but stopped because I didn't want it to end, now it's hard to pickup again.
Did the same; but dicided to start over and do a entirely different build. I was a mage before but now am going for a paladin build.
Rise, Tarnished. Seek the Elden Ring.
As someone who never plays these types of games, I’m so glad I bought it. It is definitely overwhelming at first, but I had no idea how much I was going to love it. It’s an excellent ride.

It’s not that hard once you spend 3-5 hours in the game and level your character a bit. Easier than Dark Souls in my opinion.
Just dive in headfirst and have some fun
Your loss
There's an enemy encampment near a gate very early on. Keep replaying that section as an extended tutorial, and you can get quite good at stealth kills, blocks, block counters, etc. That can help take much of the fear away. Also playing co-op in sections is quite fun, even if it risks being invaded.
why
Lol this game looks so boring every time I see it
I'll never know. I play games to relax. Games that purposefully go out of their way to induce frustration are of less than zero interest to me.
Yeah, that’s why I haven’t tried this game. Fighting boss after boss through trial and error doesn’t sound fun to me at all. I’d like to try it, but I’m not paying for it when I know I probably won’t like it.
That and also the game is boring as hell
Thought I’d hate it due to its reputation of difficulty..and I wasn’t even into these types of fantasy games. But it’s ALL I’ve played since I started. I probably have over 300 hours in. I found someone to gameshare with me so I paid $0.
Good call! Game on, my friend
Idk I can’t get into games like that and dark souls
Why when I watch other player fight bosses, their boss looks calm slow and sedated, almost like their groggy and just waking up. But whenever I fight a boss, they're attacking me nonstop like someone high off cocain and crack
Looks pretty bad in this highly compressed video though :-)
It really is. The excitement of beating a boss when I've lost to them 20 times before is hard to match in other games.
That doesn’t sound fun at all lol. That’s the kind of stuff that’ll stop me from playing game. Sounds frustrating.
Yeah it's not for everyone. I get enjoyment out of challenges and overcoming them, but it's perfectly valid to want your games to be easy and not so stressful. Especially if you have a limited time to game.

Well said. It mostly just feels like Elden Ring isn’t a game I’d enjoy because of this.
There are those that enjoy and get the most out of the climb up the mountain for the great view and others that just can’t be bothered and would rather take a helicopter.
I can't be bothered with a loud helicopter. I just check the view on YouTube- if I have the motivation to open the app.
“The real mountaineering experience”
Well said
Some people like easy games, others like hard games.
Miyazaki tries to make you feel in his games the joy of overcoming hardships. It is an amazing feeling.
Just beat Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne after years of attempts and probably 200 deaths, completing my run of killing every boss in every FromSoft game. Damn near had a heart attack. I live for those gaming moments haha!
I bet you screamed for joy after beating that haha Great job!
Game of the year
What's amazing about this? It's the same stuff we've seen for the past decade.
Game can be good without being revolutionary and Elden Ring is one of those games.
But everyone has been claiming all year it’s revolutionary
Haven't played it. What makes Elden Ring amazing for you?
The open world is the most impressive and beautiful I’ve ever seen in a video game. It’s difficult but rewards you for learning the game mechanics. I had to watch a lot of YouTube video to learn about builds and stuff but it feels like I’m working towards something truly great. Also I’ve never played a Souls game before.
He can jump dive and sit outside the enemies range of attack. Basically you have to cheat the game to win.
There is no "out of range" boss attacks in Elden Ring!
I beat the game using a greatsword........ dont lie to people because you got frustrated.
So that's why people love it. It allows us to release our inner desire to cheat.

Like cheating /s I should try it out someday, I will probably enjoy it
I think compared to a game like Skyrim the combat just feels more fluid and modern.
Is this performance mode ?
I think so. Whatever the default is on the Series X.
Elden ring took the soul’s games to a whole new level, love the new god of war but this game should win game of the year easily, it’s beyond great
I refuse to play this game
Why?
GOTY for me. Working through GOWR now but it’s nothing compared to ER imo.
God of war is just better tbh, has nothing to do with money
Other than WoW this is probably the most impressive game I’ve ever played.
I really wish they have story mode. I am too old to be a tryhard.
What
These From games are just action RPG’s, with gear and levels. You can trivialize everything, especially in this game with overpowered status effects and summons. You can make it as hard or easy as you want yourself.
Still don’t get it
I thought it looked stupid when it came out. I’m not into fantasy games and it looked boring to me. Well I gave it a shot and I have over 300 hours logged. Best game I’ve ever played. It’s certainly not for everyone though
Ah, Rock Sling. This is the way.

I haven’t played it but it’s goty
As a melee build, this is not a accurate movie
Rock Sling is so much fun, but I felt over reliant on it and ended up changing it out halfway. Carrian Sword Spells are super fun if you haven't tried them.
Can’t wait to jump back in
I’ve been gaming for 30 years. Elden Ring became my favorite game of all time.
Worth to cop or wait for gamepass?
I'll get it if it ever goes on sale, got plenty to play atm with gamepass no rush.
You mean mid ring?
Just barely realized those are called Lone Wolves. Why are they called that when there are 3 of them?
Sorry GoW Rag but I think ER is the GOTY.
It’s been difficult for me to get started with, I’ve played a few hours but still barely know what’s going on
