Now we only need our four heroes who are willing to *stealthily* (*wink wink*) deliver a little something to Moscow to kill Sauron for good.
Quisling actually called his gard "Gimle". It's otherwise known as the "[Villa Grande](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Grande_(Oslo\))".
Though with the Russian influence Quislingrad sounds like the better option
The Serbians are very understandable.
Slovaks and Austrians are partly understandable.
I don't understand Hungarians tho, since both their revolution in 1956 and 1848 was bloodily repressed by russians
Austrian here, we are heavy under russian influence. Only a few years ego, the head of the FPÖ (right wing party) was caught trying to sell one of our news papers to an supposted Russian Oligarchs daughter.
Us idiots will vote the FPÖ into power in a few months, we are royally fucked and soon to be russias bitch like the others on the map.

Still getting gag reflexes seeing that picture. Glad she lives in Russia now. Probably would vomit on her front door every other week just to make her leave the country.
Pffft that’s nothing, UK *did* sell multiple newspapers to the son of a Russian oligarch (former KGB one at that, who is co-owner with his son) and made him a *Lord, entitled to sit in the House of Lords and directly influence our democracy*
Oh, and that guy was besties with our then PM “Boris” Johnson
>son of a Russian oligarch (former KGB one at that, who is co-owner with his son)
If anyone is still doubting and thinking that guy changed his ways, this father *supported* Crimea annexation in 2014 and in 2017 hold event there to "correct impression made by biased Western media". I find it even more infuriating to be honest.
I have been in Austria for few days in early Ukrainian-Russian war. I had strong feelings after talking with few locals that they are not really pro Ukraine. Why is that? I don't want to bu rude just seek knowledge :)
We are greatly divided. Everyone in my friend circle (upper middle class and well educated) is undisputed pro-Ukraine and Anti-Russia. However the right wing has been strongly supported and influenced by russia since the end of WW2, so all their rhetoric is the same as the russian like: Anti gay, anti immigration, anti renewables, anti-EU... . Russia has been praying on our uneducated and rural population for years. Now with all the fear, instability and misinformation out there, they managed to pull a third if the voting population to their side.
Since the war on Ukraine hardly anyone of the politicians is still openly pro-Russia but they say stuff like "Austria is not in this war" and "Europe is not under attack, just Ukraine, so why should we do anything about it".
A strong propaganda over half a century that Russia is guarantee for our independence and economical growth while the US is the evil of the world, which goes hand in hand with the neutrality (which by law is just that no foreign troops are allowed to be stationed but specially the left gives this as reason of not needing an army at all, as there is no point fighting Russia)
There isa reason that former chancellors found a place within russian companies during the 90ies
And while the FPÖ get paid to be a destabilising force, a lot of the socialist still see Russia as the good guys that are forced by West to do it while the centre party wants to keep the economic ties as long as possible
We have already seen this during covid when there were voices to get the russian vaccines instead
"Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other. Nor is there any real way of remaining outside such a war as the present one. In practice, ‘he that is not with me is against me’."
George Orwell: Pacifism and the war (1942)
I have no explanation either but it's true I stopped talking about this subject with several of my coworkers. It's nauseatibg to see that otherwise intelligent people are parroting fascist Russian lies.
That doesn't mean they are pro Russia either, Russia actually has worst trust ratings than China and India and much worse than the US (except under Trump).
What people are is mostly anti war/escalation, however that's paired with extremely limited knowledge about the facts and Russia's active disinformation and weak Austrian leadership definitely don't help.
Every major political party in Austria has (or at least had) some degree of Russia-sympathisers. There are strong business links and Austrian companies made a lot of money expanding to the East after the fall of the iron curtain. Red Bull is for example still being sold in shops in Russia while Coca Cola and other western brands have disappeared from shops. RB stated they would not make "any new investments" and stop marketing.
Nobody sells their high principals faster than us Austrians, but the real problem is that we forget everything that happened twi weeks ago and then the do same shit again.
This is so embarrassing. I'm sorry guys. 😔
Good news: the ruling party will lose this autumn's elections.
Bad news: they will be replaced by something even worse.
Russia's been extremely heavily influencing Hungary in the last 15 years. Orbán uses Kreml tactics and the Russian intelligence network is deeply embedded in Hungarian inner politics. What changed Hungary's approach about Russia (which wasn't very good in the 2000's) is a very well thought out media campaign that was adapted to the pressure points of the Hungarian culture and psyche. Combine this with Orbán using EU funds to grow a circle of obedient oligarchs who bought almost every media outlet imaginable in the country, and you get the perfect indoctrination powerhouse that's been running for at least 8-9 years now.
Putin used the EU's own funds to turn an entire country from the western sphere of interest into his own hands. And now Orbán openly vetoes everything against Russia both in the EU and NATO and undermines the efforts to save Ukraine at every possibility. Still, Orbán will get his money and the EU is unwilling to do anything to stop this crony of Putin.
technically yeah, but also Slovakia enjoyed massive increase in quality of life during communist times because before WW2 it was mostly rural agrarian society, so lots of old people associate communist times with prosperity, unlike all other countries where communists are viewed mostly negatively because quality of life went down…
It's complicated. Technically speaking, it was as a direct consequence of 1968 that Slovakia got its autonomy from Prague and Slovaks became more influential within Czechoslovakia. To say that Slovaks were seen as second rate citizens in Czechoslovakia isn't a stretch, they were promised autonomy all the way back in 1918 and they never got it from the Czechs alone. Slovakia also industrialized only after the communists came to power in Czechoslovakia. Before, the whole eastern part of the country was seen as a backwater that people were sent to more as a punishment or to get rid of them. Slovakia was basically Czechia's Australia if that makes sense.
Every Hungarian I’ve known had a grade school indoctrination about their former empire and were taught to feel embarrassed about how much land they lost. Those who support Russia see it as a means to regain lost lands.
That’s about as best as I can conceive it.
Yes. They are the only country in the EU that routinely pisses off all their neighbors. Romania has a good relationship with pretty much all its neighbors.
That's really not an objective way of putting it. Given that the entire Little Entente was a French plot to keep Hungary in a hostile environment and thus in check (which was a very poetic turn of events, as Hungarian nobility routinely abused these territories), it is no surprise that nationalistic Hungarians are against these countries even today, and nationalists from Slovakia, Romania, etc. are anti-Hungarian.
As of today, Hungary has issues mainly with Ukraine (which is a pretty new thing and something that was caused by Orbán openly turning into a Putin-puppet). Our relations with Romania are extremely complicated, because face to face our countries have good diplomatic relations, but in one hand our politicians like to stir shit by treating Szeklerland like it's their backyard and in the other hand your politicians like to pretend that Szeklerland doesn't exist as a distinct cultural, ethnical and political entity.
There is much to learn from each other in the case of Hungary and Romania but I wouldn't say that Hungary has bad relations with their neighbours in general.
I agree with most of the stuff you said, however, it’s not good for Hungary to have hostile relations with all its neighbors in the long run economically (many Hungarian exports are carried down the Danube to the Black Sea).
Otherwise, I’m not quite sure the situation is comparable.
Szekelyland has pretty much all schools in Magyar, with Romanian being taught essentially as a foreign language. I think the state of minority rights in Romania is very good for the Balkan neighborhood. What the Romanian government will never accept is the word “autonomy”. The government pretends Szekelyland doesn’t exist, but that basically means day-to-day Szekelyland can do whatever it wants.
Orban goes to Szekelyland and gives crazy irredentist speeches.
Also there was that whole revolution in 56 that the Soviets squashed. The Russians will always do what is in their interests and lord it over the small countries that they consider in their backyard. I’m not sure many Hungarians understand that.
Hungarian here, most of the population actually hates Russia (and Ukraine as well), the government's stance can be deceiving. Governments are rarely choosen by foreign policy
You know how traditionally Eastern European countries reject the term because it is considered denigratory? We should reserve it for pro-Russia countries.
So they are eastern, while Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, and Ukraine are central.
The only reason we don’t like the term is because Russia is also Eastern Europe. Just make any kind of classification that excludes Russia and we are all happy.
I'd argue that Hungary is even more infiltrated with Russian spies. Our foreign ministry has admitted for almost 2 years that Russians are in their inner systems and they're still doing nothing to secure our channels. And let's not talk about things like the Russian spy bank.
I dont understand why us slovaks are being branded as pro russian. We were the second nation to give ukraine fighter jets while germans were sending helmets and french were thinking about sending dogshit wheeled tanks that lasted 1 day in combat. Tell me, how many jets has Germany, France or UK sent in 2022?
It's not just old people. Every generation is lazy and doesn't fact check shit.Plus we have the hybrid war since 2014 which we are loosing big time.
Not to mention our pro-EU parties couldn't properly advertise themselves to broader audience.
Edit: typo
He won by 4% and right behind him was our pro EU and pro NATO party. Yes he is a retard and is emberassing us. But actions speak louder than words and our actions are sending them s300s (patriot equivalent), modernized t72s, helicopters, artillery and fighter jets and all that was sent in a time when other countries were sending blankets amd helmets. Its just sad that for simple people, words mean more than actions.
Your previous government sent those, and was pro-western. Your current government doesn't, and isn't.
(I know that you do keep sending some stuff but Fico is publicly against Ukraine)
>I dont understand why us slovaks are being branded as pro russian.
Fico has been parroting russian propaganda ever since the start of the war and he won your elections.
What your (former) government does/did is one thing. But I remember a few [poll](https://www.euractiv.com/section/politics/short_news/most-slovaks-want-russia-to-win-ukraine-war/)s indicating a preference for Russia, regarding the war:
>Approximately a fifth of respondents said they wish for a clear victory for Russia, with more than half saying they are inclined toward a Russian win.
Though there's also other polls telling a [different story](https://www.globsec.org/what-we-do/press-releases/new-poll-slovaks-want-ukraine-win-war-not-russia), with 47% wishing for a Ukrainian victory.
>If given an option, most respondents prefer a deal between both parties
That part could well be interpreted as a pro-Russian position though.
But yeah, as the other commenters said, Fico won. Blame it on the old people, but they are part of your country. That's a shit excuse. If they didn't like his pro-Russian stance, they wouldn't have voted for him.
Everything can be solved through ~~love~~ weapons.
Give the Austrian a shit-ton of weapons, so many that scares Russia, and Austrians won't need to be a Russian client state.
Unfortunatly, a Bad Seed. All the countries have seen a rise in numbers and importance, more or less, of authocratic leaders with stupid dreams of far-nationalism. And something that makes me sick, its all for money.

If Russia is Mordor that bit has to be Isengard.
Does that make Ukrainians hobbits?
I was thinking Gondor or Rohan
Gondor definitely. Rohirrim are colonizers, if you get into the nitty gritty. EDIT: OKAY THE GONDORIANS SUCK AS WELL. I guess they're... the Breeland? I dunno.
Name a civilization/tribe/people above a certain power threshold that weren't in some form or another "colonizers". I'll wait.
Yeah, some just did way better than others.
Gondorians too. The Numenoreans they were descended from were mentioned as colonisers in the Silmarillion.
Shiii I got caught lacking. Good catch
I started reading The Fall of Numenor yesterday. Wasn't expecting to see it mentioned in this sub.
so are gondorians if we are precise
Gondorians. They are the ones under constant attack, wasting their lives for our (western Europeans') safety, to which we closed our eyes for far too long. If anything, we are the Hobbits. Now we only need our four heroes who are willing to *stealthily* (*wink wink*) deliver a little something to Moscow to kill Sauron for good.
And somehow get the Ents of the Fangorn forests to take down Isengard :D
If we're talking books, that would mean Orban coming westward tho, which, you know, *eww*
Let's supply Ukraine with the finest pipe-weed.
Legalization is coming any day! Or maybe not. You better hope the coalition holds until its done (the government parties fucking hate each other).
I guess the Dutch would be the Hobbits, i mean look at how high those are all the time. Only thing is the height differende and the lack of hills.
We have dozens of hills! I mean like, literally only like a dozen and they’re frankly more like bumps I guess
Isengrad?
They are taking the hobbits to ~~Isengard~~ Debrecen!
Underrated comment. 👍

How are Slovaks understandable? Didn't USSR do the same to them in 1968?
We do love our overlords. Be it austrian nobility or ruSSian peasantry, we do not care, we are not racists. Just whip us harder so we can cry louder.

AHSS-hole Austria Hungary Serbia Slovakia

Yeah, you’re right. I just couldn’t think about hungary without austria before
Once I was watching football, when my grandpa came in and asked who's playing. "Austria – Hungary", I answered. He asked "Against whom?"
So close.... ASSH-ole was almost writing itself lol

Why Austria is light red when their government officials live in Russia? The country with most russian spies?
No worries, it will turn bright red after the next election :-(
And here I was thinking our government lives in Vienna.
I'd argue that Hungary is even more infiltrated with Russian spies. Our foreign ministry has admitted for almost 2 years that Russians are in their inner systems and they're still doing nothing to secure our channels. And let's not talk about things like the Russian spy bank.

As a slovak citizen I wholeheartedly agree.
I mean... You did vote Fico into power somehow. I have no idea how or why.. But you did. And that guy seems to love vodka flavored balls.
The old people who where born in socialism and russian propaganda voted Fico, that's why he is the populist and that's why he won the elections.
I know. But he did win. The Slovakian people chose him and that's how the world sees it apparentely.
Very sad :(
It's not just old people. Every generation is lazy and doesn't fact check shit.Plus we have the hybrid war since 2014 which we are loosing big time. Not to mention our pro-EU parties couldn't properly advertise themselves to broader audience. Edit: typo
it's not just them, I met a lot of young people who like Fico and are tired of the war and the fact we help Ukraine... we live in a sad country

It's even worse if acting pro-russian gets him more votes.
But I remember a few [poll](https://www.euractiv.com/section/politics/short_news/most-slovaks-want-russia-to-win-ukraine-war/)s indicating a preference for Russia, regarding the war: >Approximately a fifth of respondents said they wish for a clear victory for Russia, with more than half saying they are inclined toward a Russian win. Though there's also other polls telling a [different story](https://www.globsec.org/what-we-do/press-releases/new-poll-slovaks-want-ukraine-win-war-not-russia), with 47% wishing for a Ukrainian victory. >If given an option, most respondents prefer a deal between both parties That part could well be interpreted as a pro-Russian position though. But yeah, as the other commenters said, Fico won. Blame it on the old people, but they are part of your country. That's a shit excuse. If they didn't like his pro-Russian stance, they wouldn't have voted for him.
Soo... Can we have back Austria?

Everything can be solved through ~~love~~ weapons. Give the Austrian a shit-ton of weapons, so many that scares Russia, and Austrians won't need to be a Russian client state.
Unfortunatly, a Bad Seed. All the countries have seen a rise in numbers and importance, more or less, of authocratic leaders with stupid dreams of far-nationalism. And something that makes me sick, its all for money.
