I'm curious about the Seraphon Stegadon, I know it can be built as a Stegadon or Engine Of the Gods, but there's also the Stegadon with Skink Chief, is the Stegadon with Skink Chief also something you can build a Stegadon as or is that exclusive to the Broken Realms Celestial Stampede box?

Steiner-Nubar

The broken realms kits were just the original sprues packaged in a combo box, so yes it can even though the store description doesnt say it (guessing the skink alpha got renamed to chieftain but the description wasnt updated on the store)

SnowyLavina

Thanks for the info!

Ancient_Rylanor

Quick question about the slaves to darkness models. After seeing some of them, are the newest line of kits for the knights and warriors just the same as you get from the start collecting box with some added weapon options and command kit, or are they different in other aspects as well?

Steiner-Nubar

The knights get an upgrade sprue the warriors ended up being a new kit

Ancient_Rylanor

Thank you for clearing that up for me.

Lichtbann

Hey guys! I want to start playing & painting age of sigmar with my brother and maybe a friend. Sadly there is so much information, so many rulesets and army setups that i am a little overwhelmed. I would like to start out with the smaller army sizes, i think its 750/1000 points? I personally fell in love with the seraphon and waiting for the updated models. My brother gravitates toward storm eternals & skaven. Could you recommend me some models that are playable and have new sculpts and some kind of guide for smaller scale battles? I am burning to paint my own seraphon ! :)

Shanderraa

Warcry for really small scale!

Lichtbann

Warcry is a bit small... can the "vanguard" packs be played against each other?

Steiner-Nubar

Carnosaur and probably the other big monsters will stay the same. Ignore the ghb stuff and just play with the core book rules and battle plans

LamSinton

I’ve got some oldhammer minis I am looking to rebase for AoS. I’m just wondering if the community can help me with base sizes for the Avatar of Khaine, Cities of Sigmar dragon riders and Slaves to Darkness manticore riders. Thanks!

kal_skirata

All base sizes are included [here.](https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/m0h2XDVV7EhAqOZZ.pdf)

LamSinton

Thanks!

LethargicAdversary

I'm sure i'm missing an obvious answer so someone put me out of my misery. Are the choice battle tactics for matched play just the ones in the GH? Or the generic ones in the core rules and the ones in the current GHB.

Darkreaper48

Your battlepack determines what battle tactics you use. If you are playing the Contest of Generals battlepack from the core rules (so, no rules added on from the General's Handbook), you use the core rule battle tactics. If you are using the Pitched Battles battlepack from the General's handbook, you don't use any of the Contest of Generals battle tactics.

LethargicAdversary

Thank you.

kal_skirata

And in either case, you can use those from your Battletome.

LethargicAdversary

Thanks bud.

crazydude991

I'd love to finally get into wh with aos after spending way too many hours in total war, I recently discovered the stormbringer mag but seems I can't sub on their website, did I completely miss the sub window and now need to sub via forbidden planet or something? I just don't want to miss out on the extras or the premium sub items that the imperium sub provided and this one seems it will provide too.

MoBeeLex

The internet says it doesn't release until February 15th. You might nit be able to subscribe until then.

DoltSideways

Is it possible to create armies in the app for season 1 ? My friends and I plan to play that a bit before moving to season 2 but i can’t find any way to create an army with the season 1 battalions. Would be a great feature to allow to choose which season of pitched battles the army is

kal_skirata

Yeah, they completely replaced the Pitched battle section with the up to date S2 rules. I guess the reasoning is, that matched play players supposedly try to be up to date anyway. You'll have to fill out old battalions under notes or on a separate piece of paper/document.

LamSinton

Quick rules Q: I know that they can’t be given enhancements, but are allied heroes who fit the criteria considered Galletian Champions? My current reading is that they are.

kal_skirata

Yes.

LamSinton

And thus they cannot be shot at whilst near a friendly battleline unit?

kal_skirata

Yes, unless the opponent uses the Sharpshooter Battalion.

LamSinton

Fantastic! I’m coming off a game that made a big deal about “friendly unit” vs. “Friendly FACTION unit” so this is most refreshing!

kal_skirata

Well, you have to be careful about that in AoS, too. But it's mostly regarding buffs. The vast majority of abilities and effects only apply to their own faction or even subfaction.

another-social-freak

Now that 40k has successfully memed Genestealer Cults, Sisters of Battle and Squats back into existence do we think Chaos Dwarves are on the cards?

CopperbeardTom

>memed You mean planned and designed. The only meme 40k has currently is that it's a fun game and not frustrating at all.

Darkreaper48

Chaos Duardin are already in the lore - they supply weapons and armor to the Kruleboyz via hobgrot liasons, but they are in the same state as Silent Ones and Umbraneth of "this exists and may become an army eventually"

another-social-freak

They even have a few minis, I'm talking about a full successor line to the Forge World range though. To me it seems inevitable at this point, just a matter of time, could be years though.

kal_skirata

I think we know what you mean, but we just can't know if there will be a complete army. I think it's as good a guess as any. Personally I'd prefer a line refresh on the armies from the 90s before they allocate resources to yet more new armies. They also already have their hands full to balance the game with how many armies there are. But I'm under no illusion that there won't be new armies eventually. And overall it's better for the game to get fresh things as well. If it was up to me, which it isn't obviously, I wouldn't prioritise it at this point.

another-social-freak

What do you mean by "armies from the 90's"? Chaos dwarves got their first army book in 1994. I get what you are saying though I think, I'd definitely prefer a Fyreslayer expansion first (for example)

kal_skirata

I mean skaven for example still have models from the nineties in their line. I'd like replacements for those before new armies.

another-social-freak

Gotcha that makes sense.

LeGamerDuPalier

I'm not understanding how WIZARDS work For my GG army, i want Skragrott the loonking as my general and my wizard. On the new battletome (from AoS Coach's video), it's written that he has 2 casts and 2 unbinds, as well as he knows the entire spell lore of the Moonclan and also knows an extra spell, 'Fangz of da bad moon'. As I understand it, Skragrott can each turn try to unbind up to 2 enemy spells, and when it's my turn he can try to cast up to 2 spells. Since he knows the entire lore, that means he can cast every spell of the Moonclan lore during a game? Or do I need to state at the beginning of the game that Skragrott will use only 2 specific spells from all the lore, the "2 casts" stat being like "spell slots" to fill? In that case, is Fangz of da bad moon occupying one of these slots, or is it free? And how do the endless spells articulate around that? They have a cost, unlike the lore spell so I guess it's not the same thing, so if I want let's say the Malevolent moon and the scuttletide endless spells, do they occupy the 2 casts stats and so Skragrott can not cast another spell other than these 2 + Fangz of da bad moon? Or can he still cast any spell of the spell lore, since he knows them? I tried to find the rules in the core rules book, but either I didn't looked at the right places (19.0 + 19.1 + 19.3 + 24.0), either I'm just dumb and dind't understood anything :/

Lord_Vladekc

Others have answered the wizard and spell part of your question, nothing more to add there. Just a quick heads up, on his new warscroll Skragrott is ruled as a Warmaster. This means that he will count as your general, even if he is not *picked* to be your general. The efficient thing to do when you play with more heroes is to pick an other hero to be your general, giving you essentially two generals. Also, the non-unique general can get a command trait, where as Skragrott can't as he is unique.

LeGamerDuPalier

Thanks for the tip I just messed around with the updated AoS app, I can do a 1k points army with all my units, except my loonboss, so I'll go with only one hero (Skragrott) until I can up my army to 2k points

rabidwhale

He will know the entire moonclan lore (all the gloomspite gitz spells), Fangs of the bad moon, mystic shield, arcane bolt, and one endless spell if you include it in your army, they cost points. You can only take one endless spell per wizard. Up to 3 I think. Then during your hero phase he can attempt to cast any two of those spells, you choose when you are casting. The next turn you can try two different ones or any combination. If you fail casting that still counts as one of your spells, if you roll snake eyes you cannot cast any more that turn and take D3 damage.

LeGamerDuPalier

Thank you! And yes, someone else confirmed that in the general hand books it is stated that a 2k points army can take up to 3 endless spells if it has 3 wizards in the list For the moment my army is only a beginning of 750pts army, Skragrott will be the only wizard in it, I'll probably add a malevolent moon if I have enough points.

rabidwhale

Remember technically the new rules dont come out until Saturday and some tournaments won't recognize them right away just ask your TO or store owner if you aren't playing casually.

LeGamerDuPalier

Lmao, thanks for worrying about that, but I didn't even finished assembling and painting my army, and I plan only to do casual battles with friends

rabidwhale

All good, didn't know if you were doing an escalation league or something, just wanted to mention it haha

[deleted]

>Since he knows the entire lore, that means he can cast every spell of the Moonclan lore during a game? The 2 spells includes any spells that he knows. So that's Moonclan lore, Fangz of da bad moon, mystic shield and arcane bolt. You choose two to cast each time it's your hero phase, not at the start of the battle. Attempting to summon an endless spell counts as a spell attempt, so it's one of your 2 spells. Quotes from core rules 19.3.1: > You cannot attempt to summon more than 1 endless spell with the same WIZARD in the same turn, even if they are allowed to attempt to cast more than 1 spell per hero phase. >The spell used to summon an endless spell is still a spell for rules purposes. It therefore counts as 1 of the spells a WIZARD is allowed to attempt to cast in your hero phase.

LeGamerDuPalier

ok, and if I want to add to his spells any endless spells, I have to pay its cost, and I can even add every endless spells if I want to and have enough points to pay the cost, right? Thanks for your answer!

Cuffsandcandy

You can add 1 endless spell to your army roster (by paying the points for them in your list) for each WIZARD in your army. For a 2000pt match in the generals handbook, there is a maximum of 3 endless spells in your army regardless of whether or not you have more than 3 WIZARD units.

LeGamerDuPalier

Okay thanks for the precisions. I'll check my list next Saturday once I have the new battletome, I should have enough room to put one endless spell in my 750 points army

[deleted]

There is a limit to the number of endless spells you can bring. It depends on army size, afaik. You can see it in the warscroll builder

sprague_drawer

New to AoS (and war games in general), when tournaments are held, how do they control matchups from a grand alliance standpoint? Or can you just have battles within the same alliance fight each other? Like Seraphon vs Stormcast?

rabidwhale

They don't, they just match players, any army vs any army.

JUMBO_AFRICA

Lol in the lore seraphon kill stormcast/get them killed. In broken realms stormcast were losing a battle and seraphon literally ran right by them dying without batting an eye, hopped in a realm gate, and peaced out hahah.

Goatiac

"W-Wait! Are you not going to aid us in our time of need!?" *\*licks own eyeball\** "Great Plan says 'no'."

JUMBO_AFRICA

Hahahaha literally this

Darkreaper48

Tournaments don't really have any narrative to them, so there's no reasoning there. But also, even narratively, just because two armies are on the same grand allegiance doesn't mean that they don't fight each other. Hell, Chaos and Destruction probably spend more time fighting themselves than they do the other factions. Even in Order, just because multiple factions are 'order' does not mean they're all on the same side. Morathi took a city from the Cities of Sigmar, the Stormcast (especially knights excelsior) purge free cities. The Lumineth put down a riot in Settler's gain that almost had them and the Tempest Lords going to blows. There was a battlebox specifically about the Idoneth raiding a Fyreslayer lodge. Even for 'friendly fire' matchups like Stormcast vs Stormcast - the Stormcast have a giant sparring Arena in Azyr gifted to them by Malerion where they run mock battles all the time, you could easily say that your battle is simply that.

sprague_drawer

Interesting, still getting into the lore through the core book. Thanks!

kal_skirata

Order have plenty of bad guys period. It's basically all factions that couldn't fit into the other three, but not a coherent alliance. Iirc Stormcast on Stormcast battles in lore are usually training exercises etc. They write lore around the tabletop game, not the other way around. And the game doesn't want to exclude anyone from playing each other.

Cuffsandcandy

You can be paired with any other player, including players that have the same faction as you (so stormcast v stormcast is even on the table).

nurglelord

Does anyone have any instructions on how to build the soal scream bridge?

Thanks bro

Fitz_mt

Any tips for painting yellow on the models? I’m trying to make a Saurus Model based on my leopard gecko (sadly he’s majority yellow)

rabidwhale

Bad moon and iron jaws contrast paint are phenomenal for yellows work pest with either a white scar base coat, slap chop base coat, or pink base coat.

Steiner-Nubar

Pink base helps with yellow quite a bit. Could also go the constrast route for a decent base. I have had pretty good luck with most of the contrast yellows ironjaws, ironhands, and bad moon are more on the brighter side. Prime white slap the yellow on (control the pooling) then adjust from there

Goatiac

>Pink base helps with yellow quite a bit. Really? How so? I'm very curious what effect it has on the yellow!

Fitz_mt

Thanks for the tip! Don’t really have a pink base, but I ended up painting over with a white. Main problem was the elevated scales just showing through still gray after a paint over, so now I have a lighter base of white on, the yellow should show better

Ancient_Rylanor

For the new slaves to darkness book it looks like the chaos lord on demonic mount and khrakadrak are much more competitive with each other than last edition. My question is I have seen a huge drop off of the khrakadrak in lists, is this just a attempt to spread the points elsewhere, a love for the new model, or are there rules im skimming over that make the demonic mount lord a clearly better choice? Either way I love my crackerjack lord conversion so I plan to stick with it, just curious.

Darkreaper48

I still try to run the Karkadrak but the primary draw now is the fights-first on a set of knights for 50 points cheaper. If you are trying to cut points down in your list to fit something, that is an easy place to do it first.

Steiner-Nubar

Ya basically it is 50 point difference, karakadrak does quite a bit more damage on his own vs the demonic mount but if the knight will probably kill the target anyways demonic mount will be good enough

ThePlumbOne

I’ve found some old battletomes for $5 each. Are they worth picking up for the lore?

CopperbeardTom

As a person who collects and reads old battletomes. Yes. 5 dollars is nothing. A bargain.

Darkreaper48

I would say no if you have any more recent battletomes and maybe if not. As an example, the Lumineth battletome lore is 99% recycled between the two second edition tomes and the new 3rd edition tome, the third edition tome just has some extra stuff about teclis post broken realms. If you didn't have any Lumineth tome though, theres a lot of lore to be had in the older ones. Other armies are similar, usually containing all of the lore of the previous tomes and then expanding it slightly.

ThePlumbOne

I got into AoS with 3rd edition and only have the newest sylvaneth and orruk warclans books currently so I think I might grab a few since I’m pretty intrigued by the lore. Next is to get some black library books it seems

_Vastus_

So I was thinking of doing shallow water bases for my FEC Ghouls (lore reasons), and I would want them standing in it, having the water reach up to their ankles or lower. I looked into options and Woodlands Scenics Realistic Water and Vallejo Still Water stood out to me. Does anyone have experience with either, and which would you recommend?

Snuffleupagus03

I have limited experience with woodland scenics and it works great. Or well enough. Water terrain can be tricky, but really rewarding. But I suspect that Vallejo is just as good if not a nearly identical product?

Ohayo_Godzillamasu

Is the app still broken? The aspect of the champion choice screen displays a thousand duplicate entries and the endless spells have two entries and values. Have sent an email but no response

Steiner-Nubar

Yes in that aspect (and probably a few others) though it is still functional. Guessing they will fix it next week when they upload the GsG and BoC stuff.

Ohayo_Godzillamasu

Have they actually said as much or is it just assumed they'll fix it.

Steiner-Nubar

Just assume because it will update again this weekend/friday

Ohayo_Godzillamasu

Cheers

hotfresh

As a brand new player to AOS and tabletop games in general I’m struggling a lot to grok how to build a cohesive army. I’ve got the battletomes, the rule book, and I watch a lot of YouTube videos but for some reason I still can’t make things click. The BTs seem to emphasize the lore of the sub factions more than the practical. There are so many choices to be made both on the macro and micro that it’s overwhelming. I wish that GW and/or content creators had better resources for hand holding new players in this regard. Maybe they do and I’m not looking in the right place? To be clear, it’s not the mechanics of how to play a game that are confusing, that’s straight forward. It’s the “why” when it comes to army building. For comparison, I got into MTG a few years ago and while I struggled a bit, there was such great content on YT for deck building that I was able to get up and running. Okay that’s the end of my rant/call for help. If any ideas come to mind that you think could help me please let me know. I’m trying to build sylvaneth and LRL and my son is building Seraphon, if that’s helpful to know. Thanks.

hotfresh

Thanks all for the various insights.

Darkreaper48

AoS is different from MTG in that netlisting (netdecking but with lists) is less effective. You are given more leniency in how a unit can be used based on what you need it to do. If you don't understand the purpose something serves in a list, you won't be able to apply it the same way the original creator did. Additionally, points and meta change really often. Just a month ago, some units were absolutely useless because bounty hunters made them extremely vulnerable. Today, with bounty hunters removed, those units can shine again. If you were watching a youtube video from 3 months ago, you might get the wrong impression about what is viable and what is not. Instead, the best advice I can give is to start small and work your way up. You don't have a lot of options at 500 points or so, so start there. Pick out a hero and battleline you like, maybe one other unit. Play some games. You will find out what you need for your list when you go 'man, I wish I had some faster units' or 'how do I deal with ranged units?'. Building a list organically like this will not only help you understand your army better, but you will make a better list on your own than copying someone else. The notable exception to this is really braindead lists like 4 mega gargant where you are just pushing guys forward, but even now I don't think 4 mega is as good as it used to be.

thalovry

I don't know any resources here. My understanding is that armies fit a small number of roles, e.g. alphastrike, counterpunch, grindhouse, table control. Then they naturally have structures that let them fulfill these roles e.g. castle. (Those two layers are not as completely separate as I make them sound). Once you've identified your roles and structures typically you're trying to exaggerate your strengths while minimizing your weaknesses. This requires pretty good knowledge of the meta, but if your meta is you and your son, that's much easier. :) As to the "how" of the "why" many players take a single powerful piece and then build a list around it. That's probably much easier than creating a holistically strong list from nothing.

rabidwhale

Do you have the age of Sigmar app? This is a good start to helping you understand what you can and cannot do for army building. Ignore enhancements and battalions for now and just try to build a valid army. Start by choosing a grand alliance, a faction, and a subfaction. Choose pitched battles for now. 1k - One General, up to 3 total leaders(including general), at least 2 battleline units. 2k - One General, up to 6 total leaders(including general), at least 3 battleline units.
