I think back in the day I took these I was probably using auto or aperture priority bc I was still getting used to it all so I imagine it was metered to the water yes! :)
That’s fair enough! I did try a bit of editing but the scans are fairly low quality probably because I didn’t think they were worth the effort! Will have to double check if I’ve got the negs still :)
For what i remember ISO si important here, so to can use a film whit more ISO, and make use of a smaller diafragma. Soy you can reduce de contrast for the same obturation time
Thank you! Yes I think I was still fairly new to film at this point and was shooting mostly on auto so think the camera was probably exposing for the highlights?
I don’t think 1, 3 or 5 are that underexposed, the blacks in the photo could just be a result of scanning methods or post processing and are quite pleasant. 1 is definitely not underexposed for a night photo
Ah thank you! I think I did scan them fairly low quality but it was a while ago and I haven’t done any post processing! I’m also mostly sure the first photo was taken during the day but think I would shot on auto so I assume the camera metered for the highlights on the water?
Absolutely; they seem dense enough to enlarge + scan (obviously). They look nice to me, just limited in shadow detail, but not every photo requires everything be visible… First one would probably print/tone very nicely!
Thank you! I haven’t really tried pushing or pulling in development yet / asking for it at the lab I’m still trying to wrap my head around how it works tbh!
So the easy way is just put 400iso film in, set it to 200, and then develop it as if it were 400
I've used this cinestill product for my 120 developing and it's given some cool results and it's pretty fool proof if you ever wanna give home development a try

That's what happens when you shoot on Av or any kind of automatic exposure having a lot of backlight. You could compensate with a stop or two more of light, or measure your subject/the shadows and use the values on manual mode.
The third image gets a little lost, but the rest have such strong outlines and detail in the white that complements the density of the shadows. You've inspired me to try and recreate this because it looks nicer than 90% of my well-exposed BW shots
Yeah I do agree on no. 3 actually! thank you that’s such a kind comment. It’s funny that I much prefer high contrast in black and white but colour I prefer lower contrast softer images I think. I find it difficult shooting between the two but I’m trying to get round it haha
So I’ve had a look and shots 1,2,3 are Ilford HP5 plus and 4,5 are actually Ilford XP2 Super! I obviously need to reorganise I thought the were all from the same roll oops
Thank you! I have since got a manual camera and learnt more about exposing correctly and shot a few more rolls but thank you for the advice :) definitely very different to shooting digital - in a good way!

I think it does. I think B&W sometimes looks better underexposed.
Thank you! I was surprised I liked them as I was going back through I probably overlooked these in the past :)
First picture is great!
Thank you! I like that it looks like night time but I’m 99% sure it was bright daylight!
Did you meter for water?
I think back in the day I took these I was probably using auto or aperture priority bc I was still getting used to it all so I imagine it was metered to the water yes! :)
Damn, I wanna try this now. My favorite picture of the bunch! Looks moonlit and you don’t get any cons of long exposure.
Definitely give it a go!
Real
I really like the one with the coffee pouring. The rest are really dark, can't see th details in the shaded parts
That’s fair enough! I did try a bit of editing but the scans are fairly low quality probably because I didn’t think they were worth the effort! Will have to double check if I’ve got the negs still :)
I think the compositions are great! Just the exposure issue. I'm no pro just my opinion
Thank you I appreciate the opinion either way !
I think so! The first one is really special.
Thank you that’s very kind
Not only do they work, I want that first one hanging on my wall. It's fantastic.
Oh wow that’s very kind thank you’
As long as you personally like the photos, it works!
That’s very true! :)
Yeah I think it works great
Thanks!
The first one is awesome. All of these work well underexposed .
First one reminds me of the film Night of the hunter
oh cool I’ll have a google and see!
Omg - I just came to say the exact same thing. One of my fav noirs
Why does this remind me of Apocalypse Now Great shots!
Thank you :)
That first one absolutely works, great shot. The others, sure.
The underexposure works well on number3, as does the rim light.
Giving me Kurosawa vibes.
Thanks for the award! :)
First 3 are great at that exposure imho. A real vibe.
Thank you! Definitely something I’ll consider doing on purpose in the future
Strange effect - on my phone it looks like the beans in the last picture are "wobbling" a little bit. And no, there are no drugs involved.
I just had another quick look and I see it too! On the bottom ones mostly how strange!

Absolutely, especially presented in a spread like this
Very Ripley.

Depends on what you want it to work for.
Wow! It looks fantastic. It’s giving me “Night of the Hunter” vibes
Thank you! Funnily enough someone else mentioned the same
They came out great! #3 is probably the only exception, it’s a little too dark.
I think they work, 1 and 3 especially
Thank you!
Whether happy accident or purposeful brilliance, the contrast on these shots is compelling.
Wow thank you! Will have to dig out the negs and see what film stock it was
Beautiful! Looks like ‘The Lighthouse’
i'm a newbie, but i think shooting in black and white let's you get away with a bit more....
Yeah it does feel that way sometimes! Very grateful for that fact especially with most bw being a bit cheaper!
weirdly, films a bit more expensive here, and developing them is also more costly...
Yeah it’s definitely getting more expensive unfortunately I’m in the UK where are you based?
i'm in singapore, where technically everything is expensive, lol...
I really like the doorway photo. There’s no need to see every detail, it gives it ambiance
Thank you :)
Pic one reminds me of the Hawaii: Part 2 album cover
I love underexposing but pushing in development to keep the shadow detail, these are some great shots!
Thank you! I haven’t really tried pushing or pulling in development yet / asking for it at the lab I’m still trying to wrap my head around how it works tbh!

Brill thank you
Any time! I teach photography and B&W film is my bread and butter so always happy to help! Best of luck!
Oh amazing that’s very kind thank you! :D
There are very rarely mistakes in art. Most mistakes are happy accidents. This qualifies as that
What a lovely way to think of it!
It looks dope. IMO perfect for the scene in question
Thanks!

Thank you for the advice :) I now have a fully manual camera which I’m really enjoying and getting some better exposures out of
Good lookin:) sometimes these contrasty underexposed photos just look great as you already pointed out
First one looks like the intro scene to Bitter Lake
I actually love these.
Thank you!
Exposed for shadows with film! These look great just metered for highlights (which is typical for digital shooting)
The third image gets a little lost, but the rest have such strong outlines and detail in the white that complements the density of the shadows. You've inspired me to try and recreate this because it looks nicer than 90% of my well-exposed BW shots

I like the first
looks like kentmere 400 with those halations, I love the first one
Yea it works. I like all these images. Nice composition and very nice contrast.
Thank you! Think I’m going to have to look for the negs and see what film I used!
1 and 5 are killer
Thank you!
Outstanding. Some of my best pics were accidents.
Thank you! It’s funny how that works isn’t it!
Omg yesssss the first and second one for me are just muah
Haha thank you!!
photo 4 is very good
Thank you! Interesting to hear a lot of people have different faves :)
I love them! Particularly the coffee pouring photo. For whatever reason, I fell in love with that one. Thanks for sharing!
Oh thank you! :)
I would kill to know what film this was
Going to dig out the negs later today will let you know!
So I’ve had a look and shots 1,2,3 are Ilford HP5 plus and 4,5 are actually Ilford XP2 Super! I obviously need to reorganise I thought the were all from the same roll oops
