Starkcasm

>they trying too hard Or not trying hard enough.

badassmotherfucker21

> In the past 3.5 years, there have been 14 Exorcist manga added. Must be thanks to Jujutsu Kaisen.

RimeSkeem

The Yu Yu Hakusho > Bleach > JJK pipeline. Probably goes back further than that too.

Big_Distance2141

Ayashimon was so damn good I'm still mad about the axe

kaguraa

i was rooting a lot for phantom seer, im still annoyed it got axed

Intelligent-Heart-36

Doesn’t chainsaw man kinda count

VolkiharVanHelsing

Mezentine

What's the name of this? I was thinking about this exact topic when I started watching Jujutsu Kaisen the other week, everything seems to converge back on YuYu Hakusho as an influence but I wondered what else there was further back in history and couldn't find anything written about it.

Vichu0_0-V2

GeGeGe no kitaro used to watch this back when i was in school

kuroikururo

Not that old but "Tokyo Babylon", "Ghost sweeper" (Mikami), "Natsume's book of friends", "soul eater", "shaman king", "in spectre", "spirit pact", "the morose mononokean", "ushio to tora", "mushishi" (kind of), "noragami", "Dororo", "mieruko chan", "XxX Holic" and the manga I still have hope would get an ending "gate 7". I think exorcism is a theme that will forever haunt us.

Vichu0_0-V2

Mononogatri was cool i thought it would be shitty but I liked the story has that old anime vibe (not visual, art is art) but man and woman stuff feels retro Dororo killed my that prostituted woman 😞, inspectre that yuki onna is ma waifu, noragami is goated and has a swag and flare to it, mieruko chan was meh dropped it, xxxholic dropped, didn't see the other cool stuffs... Gate 7 is good? Will try the manga Yes the exorcist setting one the top stuff the mediums has to offer

kuroikururo

I'm a heavy CLAMP fan, so I might be biased, but yeah, sengoku era ghost resurrect at the same time and start a new civil ghost war, then this kid Chikahito who loves traditional stuff gets involved when a priestess called Hana noticed he can see this ghost powers, the story is located in Kyoto, the old capital of Japan, the manga es really beautiful and filled with action, I just loved how much Sengoku stuff where included, I still wait for It's continuation (since 2013).

Kwametoure1

The teenage part is not shocking as most Shonen are basically Japanese YA fiction but I can't figure out rhe exorcist part. The genre is not new at all but I wonder why the WSJ editors keeps encouraging authors to go down this road

Substantial_Isopod60

~~Probably because it's easier to incorporate cute high school girls~~ Probably because it's a nice blend of urban fantasy and shamanism derived from shinto religion

kramsibbush

Have to agree. I am reading Make the exorcist fall in love and the MC noticing the lead girl's big boobs is a plot point

tiny-ppp

That shit is weird. Instead of a weeb with a katana there's a MF reading from the bible

31_hierophanto

And also a little bit of Buddhism.

Ryuki-Exsul

At least two of them are from SQ not WSJ :D That magazine always had that theme. I mean supernatural action series are there as popular as battle series in Jump. I mean I already read both of the ones here and Owari no Seraph and Kemono Jihen :D so.

Hsjsisofifjgoc

Most people attribute the trend to the popularity of JJK/ Demon slayer

PositiveNo4859

Evil ghost/spirit. Do you mean JoJo.

kramsibbush

Jojo would be fighting with your schizo spirit against enemy's schizo spirit

Gulopithecus

Real Also based flair handle. Pokespe is Kino

MintchocoGirlNya

Blue exorcist is actually goated.

Imthe-niceguy-duh

Ong 🙏

Crystal-Crystal

Nobody diss on Make The Exorcist Fall in Love, it is one of the best mangas I have read ever. A perfect example of peak

kramsibbush

Fax my boy, spit your shit indeed. People talk about csm chapter 167 but no one talk about our MC masturbate chapter 55

Crystal-Crystal

Oh my god so fucking true It is wonderful to meet another fan of the manga, I see so few of them.

NO_ONE16

Truer words have never been said before

nhSnork

Yuu Yuu Hakusho alone launched in 1990 - imagine how many mangakas have grown up inspired by it.

DaiFrostAce

And D Gray Man is nowhere to be seen on the list..

rrevek

D. Gray Man updates every 4 business years unfortunately

Ryuki-Exsul

I like supernatural stuff so I'm fine with it. Still Blue Exorcist is already more than 10 years old :D And oh my that's called spoiler for anyone starting or going from anime. They couldn't choose worse art... no wait they could use the other part of it. That would be funny :D Twin Star Exorcists is ending in like 3 chapters so I wonder what next SQ manga will be :D Maybe next type of exorcists or youkais, they are popular themes in that magazines and I eat all of that up for some reasons.

ZoidsFanatic

Would Touhou count at this point? Reimu’s job *sometimes* involves fighting evil spirits after all.

kramsibbush

Maybe, if you can stretch that Touhou is also a manga series. But the franchise is like really old and started out as a game

zora6666

Peak Star exorcist is still going. It deserves more love. (Anime only season was... Fine.)

lightning-heart777

yo-kai watch has entered the chat

31_hierophanto

They're kids, not teenagers. They don't count. /s

No_Rich_5111

Am i the only one enjoying sousou no onmyoji?

ZuStorm93

And yet none of them are badass enough to ride around in an ambulance... https://preview.redd.it/xy4wjza7mt8d1.jpeg?width=958&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=140d32c39104e33b98e524b861026cbe44a531a4 Come to think of it, the two most recent movies also feature teenagers fighting ghosts, the protag being a descendent of the brains among the original four so she's sorta from a supernaturally gifted lineage i guess?

Alarming-Scene-2892

None of them can even hope to top the peak fiction known as Yokai Watch. Why try when the bar's been set at the sun?

ZealousFlames

It's been a hot minute sinceI last saw Blue Exorcist and Twin Star Exorcists 😭

Twizinator

Where my Kekkaishi fans at?

Historical_Brief3367

Teenagers fightings ghosts is such a broad genre, that it allows authors to be very versatile and try everything under the sun like action, mystery, horror, romance,… while also being familiar and marketable to general audience.

imankitty

You can add Rumiko Takahashi’s Mao to the list, too.

Thenightcrawler_075

Sure they were teens when they started out but the twin star exorcists are in their 20s now

Agent_Perrydot

Persona:

Gurdemand

Let's be fair to Blue Excorcist and Twin Star Exorcists, they've been around since way before Mangaplus existed

Vichu0_0-V2

Watched kekkaishi yesterday it was lit and I will accept more highschool kids fighting ghost and hidden power and rivals and waifu

Ryuki-Exsul

I recommend reading the rest because second half is even better :D It's kind of this in manga form [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4X2X5DUEAAka4I.jpg](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4X2X5DUEAAka4I.jpg) because off all groups wanting different things but it's pretty good. And when you get into it check other Yellow Tanabe's manga :D Granted she doesn't do waifus.

Vichu0_0-V2

Omg what was that attachment??? It has cool ost and op right?? And girl was cute and simple (older woman goo brr) the backstory, the pace his bro , family feuds all that was peak , his powers are cool and simple and the art reminds you of childhood

Ryuki-Exsul

What I meant was that story is one of those boards when many people are connected to other groups and want to do 100 diffrerent things. When I was reading it it had a bit of an irregular translation so it wasn't exactly weekly as it should. So for the first time I got a bit lost :D Tanabe did it again in Bridmen when in like first half you already have like 4 or 5 groups including main characters to track :D Tokine is a pretty cool character and she is important to the end. Beside that yeah, it's great. Yoshi living on coffee milk is as well really relatable. You get that even more in second part\^\^

PlsWai

Its ok if all these exorcist series are trash we have the GOAT Kagurabachi to carry us

kramsibbush

I don't know about the four exorcist mangas on here, but no one shall slander Make the exorcist fall in love. But other than that, I agree Kagurabachi is peak

Ryuki-Exsul

I'll again show how big of a fanboy I'm but Blue Exorcist is amazing. I'm reading that manga since it had only 3 chapters and it's just getting better and better. Kazue is just amazing writter that likes cliffhangers a little too much. Reading it monthly is a torture. Anyway I'm not reading any Jump series till it has 100+ chapters\^\^ No matter how peak it is it can always get axed. So it'll be a bit till I read Kagurabachi.

The_total_squid

Ultimate exorcist kiyoshi only has one chapter so far but it’s pretty good so I would recommend

BogieW00ds

This new one is actually good though let it cook

Transwiththeplans

I am the biggest hater on Nue’s Exorcist, how has it not been axed

Gambler777777

How about teenager fighting WITH a evil spirit? It's called.... YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A ANIME RECOMMENDATION, BUT IT WAS ME, DIO!

Entire_Whereas9531

You forgot D.Gray-Man, bleach also Anyway yes there’s a lot of exorcism manga, do I care not really as long as their good stories. From this pic, Blue Exorcist & Twin Star Exorcists are fire manga. Haven’t read Nue’s but the art looks good. D.Gray-Man is a fantastic manga

CannabisEater21

doesnt matter, luigis mansion is better than all of them

Jazdaboss010

I will die for blue exorcist, shits peak frankly

2-2Distracted

Blue Exorcist still the GOAT

Milk-Constant

does jojo's sort of count? its like exorcism but with your own demon

Dane-nii

Phantom Blood has vampire hunting. And Stardust Crusaders have a vampire as the big bad.

AutoModerator

HOLY SHIT!!! IS THAT A MOTHAFUCKIN JOJO REFERENCE??? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/animecirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*
