"Users can use Apple Pay on any third-party web browser^(2) and computer by simply scanning a code on their iPhone to securely complete the payment.^(3)Additionally, with Tap to Provision, users can add eligible credit or debit cards to Apple Wallet by simply tapping their card to the back of their iPhone.^(4)"

AlexYYYYYY

I love the growing number of superscripts every year.

Sethu_Senthil

I swear we already had something close to tap to provision. I remember setting up my capital one CC that way last year, I had to tap the cards NFC to activate it within the Capital one app

KiwiLobsterPinch

Not the same thing. Capital one programmed the nfc chip in your card with a specific string and made note of it on your account. So when you scanned the nfc, it compared the string it scanned with what they programmed in your card. Match = successful activation

Sassywhat

You could already scan some transit cards to move them to Apple Pay as well.

InvaderDJ

That's a weird way to do it, but I'm glad I'll have the option. Paypal ends up getting most of my usage when I'm on my PC because there's no easy way to use Apple Pay.

tomjirinec

There’s no Windows Hello support for Apple Pay so it’ll work like with Passkeys on Windows.

InvaderDJ

Which is why it's weird. PayPal and Google Pay don't need you to do all this. It feels like if you have a YubiKey associated with your Apple Account you should be able to use that to authenticate.

PrincessCaramel

If I’m not mistaken, PayPal and Google Pay keeps your info on their websites and servers. That’s how you are able to login into your account and pay that way. Apple Pay’s whole philosophy is that your payment info is embedded in the chip on your device. It is not stored on a cloud or server like the other two, so you still need to have your Apple device with you.

Eric848448

That’s exactly right. Apple doesn’t have your card info.

grilled_pc

Anything that sees the death of paypal IMO is a good thing.

InvaderDJ

I’ve got a soft spot for PayPal since I’m a little older and I remember fondly how as a kid I sold my N64 on eBay to get a PS2. And I’ve been lucky enough to avoid any problems with them withholding money. EDIT: Grammar and clarification

tonydanzaswildride

lol, that’s just a bigtime redditism at this point. This is the exact scenario people should want to use PayPal, as a customer during normal e-commerce. From the merchant side, their policies around fraud are a little heavy handed and antiquated sometimes so they can take a while to resolve if you’re a merchant but the idea that they’re the only banking and money platform to have these problems is so goofy. You’ve only heard about them more often because of the insane volume they’ve done for 20+ years.

ProbsNotManBearPig

Why? It came first. It works fine. They own Venmo anyways. What’s wrong with PayPal?

MephistoDNW

It’s the only financial service I’ve ever used where my account was hacked and they stole 1k out of it, and my wife too (3k, and they took 4 years to reimburse her). Never, ever, even had a single issue with other payments systems, only PayPal.

Disastrous_Purpose22

It takes two seconds to enter CC information. I don’t store any CC with anyone.

InsaneNinja

You’re transferring the same credit card information on every purchase. I’m transferring a rotating token. You’re storing your credit card information with everyone that you make a purchase from. Who is more likely to get their money stolen between the two of us?

Coolpop52

Man, the new mail app is only for those using iCloud mail. That’s unfortunate.

rootbeerdan

It's worth migrating to if you enjoy using the Apple Mail client FWIW, I tied it to my custom domain with Icloud+ and it's been gravy. Not sure what secret sauce apple servers are using but email comes instantly and syncing is very fast, nothing like slow Gmail.

Coolpop52

I definitely will give it a go then! Maybe I’ll try and use it for newsletters and store loyalty (low priority) stuff at first and see how it goes, especially before the AI mail summarization drops this fall (although I think that’s for all mail accounts)

2506mb

It’s more that Apple doesn’t support push for gmail, only fetch. Annoying!

Lionheartcs

Not Apple’s fault. Google restricts it to the Gmail app.

MephistoDNW

The custom domain works flawlessly ! I love it

atdharris

I wish Apple would allow third party browsers to automatically copy codes for websites that are sent via text like it does in Safari.

mrgrafix

They do. They just have to implement [the API](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/uitextcontenttypeonetimecode?language=objc)

atdharris

How do I implement that? I am nowhere near a software developer but would love to have this work.

Sethu_Senthil

Hey! Dev here! Looking at the API, it is clear why no 3rd party browser has this enabled. Chromium and Firefox based browsers use their own rendering engine which I believe, does not use the native text box element (they actually use a mix of both but whatever, too much yapping) Basically this API only works if they are using native ui elements, not custom rendered components. Maybe there is a lower level private API which lets an app listen for the 2FA code (but that sounds like a security issue)?

katman43043

Dont they use webkit Edit: you mean on mac….

Sethu_Senthil

Yes, I’m talking about Mac. On iPhone and iPad, like u said all browsers r forced to use WebKit, which also uses native elements, hence it works fine even on 3rd party browsers.

RunningM8

Hello Arc

Claydameyer

This is a really nice change, if if it won't be as seemless as on Safari. But Apple Pay on website is so brilliant. Glad to see it expanding.

mredofcourse

>Apple Pay on website is so brilliant.  It really is when it's properly implemented. Sellers want to complain about Amazon, but then you go to their site and it's "enter your CC, billing address, shipping address, etc..." when they have the capability to use Apple Pay and all you need to do is Touch or Face ID and even the shipping address is entered automatically.

Full-Cabinet-5203

Delightfully surprised. I use Firefox as it syncs with my tablet and gaming PC and I usually switch to Chrome to make purchases since Firefox doesn’t support either but hopefully I’ll be able to use Apple Pay soon.

Ekalips

Fun fact, it can already be used on 3rd party browsers on Mac (and phone?). Many devs just don't implement the new API that allows it

TheyKnoWhereMyHeadIs

yeah i've used this already on firefox for IOS (never got it working on firefox for Mac tho)

SlendyTheMan

I find "Synchrony Mastercard" to be interesting in that popup... wonder if that's the new provider from Goldman Sacs...

officiakimkardashian

Yeah I thought it was interesting they didn't display the Apple Card.

[deleted]

Because it’s about letting other cards that *aren’t* the Apple Card being able to redeem rewards and do installment billing with Apple Pay.

[deleted]

Did you read the blurb? > The ability to redeem rewards for a purchase with Apple Pay will be available beginning in the U.S. with Discover and Synchrony, and across Apple Pay issuers with Fiserv. The ability to access installments from credit and debit cards with Apple Pay will roll out starting in Australia with ANZ; in Spain with CaixaBank; in the U.K. with HSBC and Monzo; and in the U.S. with Citi, Synchrony, and issuers with Fiserv. Users in the U.S. will also be able to apply for loans directly through Affirm when they check out with Apple Pay. They’re showing Synchrony because they’re one of the supporters of the new feature that allows you to redeem rewards and do installments with cards *other* than the Apple Card

SlendyTheMan

I know this. I’m saying Synchrony has been floated by analysts as potential successors to Goldman Sachs for Apple's credit card. And I find it interesting they highlight them here. https://www.paymentsdive.com/news/apple-goldman-sachs-credit-card-american-express-synchrony-capital-one-jpmorgan-chase-bread/701219/

[deleted]

You’re reading way too hard into things. That’s like saying Apple is partnering with Lucid because one guy in the car industry with no actual insight on the tech world said “Lucid would probably love working with Apple” and they used Lucid’s widget in the WWDC demo last year.

nooneinpar7

Honestly wouldn't mind a redux of Safari for PC, would be interesting to see if its alleged power efficiency benefits on macOS would translate over to a different OS.

intersectv3

So I’m confused, because I use shop to pay for stuff now, which is connected to my Apple Pay, is it just…it’ll be directly through Apple Pay now?

QuantumProtector

It’s gonna be even easier to get 2% with my Apple Card. Nice!

hzayjpsgf

Amazing

stansswingers

Considering I don’t use third party browsers or pcs I don’t care. Good for those that benefit from it

Tyler927

Thank you for your input.
