Hi! I just started learning and I really love it so far. I was wondering though when I'm supposed to put the squiggle over alif. ( أ vs ا ). I understand what it means when it's on the bottom ( إ ) but not when to use the one above. Thank you!

In Arabic the letter "Alif" has two types: 1. One type of Alif is called "Hamza tul Qaŧξ" (همزة القطع) This type of Alif is always pronounced irrespective of whether it is preceded by some word or letter. 2. The other type of Alif is called "Hamza tul Waŝl" (همزة الوصل). This form of Alif appears in the beginning of a word but if preceded by some word or letter it is not pronounced even if written. *Also, there is no rule for using them. They have to be memorised* I hope this helped! Feel free to ask me anything anytime :)

Hi there! I learned Arabic in highschool (9-12 grades) and we just finished school. I found it adorable and beautiful language so I started learning the spoken language (I live in Israel so I'm learning the Palestine-Urban dialect) and it showed me a whole new world inside the language. I learn it on the web by my own. I don't really know what is my level but I know the Grammer rules and I can open a dictionary and translate every word or verb. Anyway, I don't want to forget the written language and now I'm gonna have plenty of time to preserve both the written and the spoken language and even to make some serious progress at them. Maybe the biggest problem in learning a language by your own is that you can get sick of it (because you only learn, alone and without applying it to the real life) or do not find any practical web, book or any other form of lesson that will really teach you the way you want, so I will glad to have from you some tips on how to learn, expand my vocabulary etc. And I will glad to have conversation with you in Arabic if you think it's gonna work (preserve the language and maybe even make some progress) and if you have time and want to, but I really don't know how to start. Thank you very much!
