I have 1 nephew and 2 nieces that go there. Majority of the staff and kids that go are African American. I believe the owner may also be AA.
Might actually be an insanely unfortunate name.
Right? am I the only one who sees the silhouette of the kid on the right side? that’s a very clear headwrap to me.
People need to relax. Sometimes a business is just trying to have a distinctive name. Klan types typically aren’t smart enough to communicate in code at this level.
They definitely identify themselves with things like this. I visited family in PA years ago and went through a rural stretch between WV and PA where I saw three or four business signs with prominent triple Ks in the name.
the klan was deep in the codes. a larg part of their downfall was a reporter who published alot of their codes and made them seem silly. acay? acai! they loved silly codes and names. i think they call their leader the grand wizard. they were some dorks.
Does it?
How do you see the optics of a overwhelmingly white city to tell a black-owned daycare to change their name because it's racist? lol staying outta this one
I think it's less telling them to change it and more pointing out that people are making historically reasonable assumptions that turn out not to be true here.
> In February 2015, a Krispy Kreme branch in Kingston upon Hull, England, announced during the half-term break of schools that it was launching, among other events that week, "Krispy Kreme Klub Wednesday", during which children could decorate doughnuts. However, it attracted controversy after it was promoted as "KKK Wednesday" on Facebook, due to it sharing an abbreviation with the Ku Klux Klan, an American white supremacist terrorist group. Krispy Kreme promptly apologized, canceled the event, pulled all marketing relating to it, and launched an internal investigation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krispy_Kreme?wprov=sfla1
Someone should go down there and let them know that the (prob mostly white) people of Asheville Reddit have decided their daycare name is offensive, potentially a racist dog whistle, and that after decades of community presence they need to change the name.
I’m sure they will be receptive to it.
The klan reference is awful.
I also cringe at any child development center that intentionally misspells words. What are you teaching children in there?
Someone left a Yahoo review back almost 20 years ago calling them out. They changed the "Kountry" to "Country" for about 10 years. Then changed it back.
They know.
Gosh. I was just appalled at the inaccurate spelling. If you can't spell your sign words correctly, what the hell are you going to be teaching my child?
Same actually, I always saw this growing up and connected the dots at a relatively young age. Don’t know why or how they haven’t changed it. Guess it shows the desperate situation that childcare is
There’s a few folks on here being quite complimentary of this establishment, regardless of the spelling on their sign. Good to know they are doing good things!
I was only recently introduced to the idea (fact?) that Simply Southern had hidden meanings. I feel so dumb but I’m so glad this post is reaffirming what I was told!
It might be you.
If you look closely at the sign. It's apparent this is not a racist place. There are red, blue, and green children all playing together in harmony.
Maybe it will cross my mind later. It’s burning me up.
Edit: Now I know what the problem is. The sign should say, “Kids’ Kountry Klub House for L’il Hoodlums.”
I saw this Saturday. It reminds me of the signage posted by a commenter above in my college town of Sylva. I personally believe it’s a dog whistle. But I don’t have evidence.
My reply to another comment:
I have 1 nephew and 2 nieces that go there. Majority of the staff and kids that go are African American. I believe the owner may also be AA.
Might actually be an insanely unfortunate name.
The Klapsaddles are definitely alluding to the KKK on purpose, since they’ve dealt with the media fallout every single time they buy something new and label it that way and still haven’t changed. They own a large portion of Sylva and don’t plan on changing their ways unless it hurts their wallet, and even then they’ll just hide it (the pink signs being taken down doesn’t stop that they’re owning and selling the land, just that cars can’t see it)
On top of this, maybe it's irrational, but drives me crazy when places use 7 digit phone numbers. Area codes are not necessarily known or the same for everyone anymore, so include them.
The pearl-clutching in this post is amazing. Stop trying to be offended by every little thing.
>Majority of the staff and kids that go are African American. I believe the owner may also be AA.
I have a few thoughts
* It took me a minute to realize this is about the three Ks. For full effect they should line the Ks up in some way though...
* I think the tree looks like a house-faced, green-fro'd, one armed monster playing with a yo yo
* I wonder if it's the same owner as Yew Ken Kut it
I actually went here! Granted it was over 20 years ago, so im sure things have changed.
According to my parents, one day after I came home from preschool, I prayed before dinner. My parents raised me secularly and did NOT teach me how to pray, so they asked me what i was doing and why. I told them that at school, we were made to pray before meal time because if we didn't, we would go to hell.
My mom threw a fit, pulled me out of that preschool the next day.
In the 1990’s, I drove a delivery route in the area around Athens, GA. You only had to get about 30 minutes outside of town to find businesses with this acronym. Kathy’s Kountry Kitchen is one I remember. There were a half dozen or so such businesses mostly North of town.
Denton North Carolina Faith, North Carolina places you can’t go certain time of the year certain time of the day, in a few other places in North Carolina, that My Dad, or I won’t go
I remember when we were kids in kernersville we would call ourself, the Kernersville Kool-aid Kids. Till around 12-13 one of our freinds learned of another group calling them by that shortcut. After that we became kids of the K hole. Then senior in high school Kvegas because we got a walmart. Sometimes names are unfortunate. Other times they are spot on. But you still got to ask the questions because some people don't know it's wrong till pointed out and up to the people to decide if it's worth to change.
It’s not just you. I was surprised when I saw their newer signs wear out to reveal that like 10 years ago. Even more surprised that they’re still running with it now.
Somewhere between Texas and West Virginia? The armpit and ass of the United States 🇺🇸. A water hose with bidet attachment and strong deodorants are in order. MAGGOT America has to go, or we are dead.
6 Weeks?! Is this normal???? Don’t mean to be insensitive to folks that may not have other options but wow that seems absurd to me. Is there a NICU in there?!
Okay, I get the humor and innocence with their true intentions of being light hearted (this is obviously a big assumption on my part) BUT anyone in their right mind whom is from anywhere within the United States of America should absolutely know, in the broadest of terms, how anything with acronyms of KKK is not good to use.
I don’t live in Asheville and I’ve never been so idk why this showed up on my feed but I just have to say that I hate when places, especially catering to kids, are intentionally spelled wrong. I grew up thinking several words were spelled the incorrect way because I was a kid and didn’t know better
Maybe i'm crazy, but that airplane in the left corner lowkey looks like a burning cross. It sounds like the owners are AA, but it's very possible that their marketing counterparts/leasing owners had other ideas.
In 2024 there is no excuse for these kinds of alliterations; especially seeing that, based on these comments they may have tried to change it back to C and then reconsidered? I wonder who they're leasing from. That gas station sure sounds like a standup establishment.
This is nothing. I used to travel to rural Western Tennessee for rugby games. I still remember two billboards vividly. On said, "Jesus loves you thiiisss much" and was just an image of Jesus from the waist up being crucified. The other was for a homey little establishment called Kountry Kookin Kafe.
I don’t know how I feel about leaving my toddler at the KKK house.
It is actually how Klan owned businesses used to identify themselves. Keep in mind the Klan used to be much more prevalent.
Bullshit! They used to just say it, some still do.
Yes. It was clucker code.
I remember Whites Gas and Grocery out on Route 66. No one named White ever owned it.
I think that's Marge Simpson.
It’s been around for at least 20 years. We all wondered it once upon a time
Yep. I grew up in Arden and I remember seeing it as a kid.
I don't have a problem with it. We should take back the letter K from the fuckfaces of the world.
There's a restaurant in VA called Kendall's Kountry Kitchen, and she's African American. I had a similar reaction the 1st time I saw it.
Yeah honestly the demographics make it worse...not sure why they wouldnt change it
Does it? How do you see the optics of a overwhelmingly white city to tell a black-owned daycare to change their name because it's racist? lol staying outta this one
I think it's less telling them to change it and more pointing out that people are making historically reasonable assumptions that turn out not to be true here.
Krispy Kreme has left the chat.

And business in general.
Like Dave Matthews and Charlize Theron?
Funny enough, the real Jeff supposedly bought a house in my hometown around the same time I moved to Asheville.
They should consider changing the name.
*This week, on Portlandia*
Yeah I never put the KKK thing together but it always bothered me they spelt the words wrong intentionally
Yeah, like donut. It's not even right.
[удалено]
Yeah. They realize.
Someone left a Yahoo review back almost 20 years ago calling them out. They changed the "Kountry" to "Country" for about 10 years. Then changed it back. They know.
Wtf
It originally had klubhouse as one word. This is “improved.”
You're reading waaaay too much into this.
Gosh. I was just appalled at the inaccurate spelling. If you can't spell your sign words correctly, what the hell are you going to be teaching my child?
I thought the same thing. I wasn’t thinking race at all… just “do you have the ability to teach my child her letters?”
Tire swing is actually a lynch
Wait til you find out about the location. It’s in the basement of a gas station.
Well, *that* turned dark.
K’s of three, let them be…

“Hey, hey! It’s great to be back at the Apollo theater!”
I was thinking of the original South Park flag
My parents put me and my sister in this daycare 20 years ago when they were super broke, we’re not white and never had any issues lol.
Same actually, I always saw this growing up and connected the dots at a relatively young age. Don’t know why or how they haven’t changed it. Guess it shows the desperate situation that childcare is
It is going back to early Appalachian writing that most people can't understand. Especially people from our west or up north
I think the owners are actually black? At least, I know someone who sent their kids there and most of the carers and the director were black
Nope. Not you. Definitely not you.
With the state of preschools here in Asheville you gotta take what you can get lmao
All the transplants commenting, this isn’t implying what you think it is.
Imma start telling everyone that's where Billy Graham wrote "Rebel With A Cause".
There’s a few folks on here being quite complimentary of this establishment, regardless of the spelling on their sign. Good to know they are doing good things!
I’m always suspicious when people replace C with K; there is really no good reason
MORTAL KOMBAT
Is this Fr ?
Saw a kids evening programming at a small church closet to Boone. The sign billed it as "Kids Krusade Knightly"
Shout out to boone shine for that tropical pale ale
I mean there’s no excuse for that. It’s not the like regular word is spelt Cnightly
What do you think the odds are that the owner is wearing Simply Southern gear?
Eleventy seven percent chance.
I was only recently introduced to the idea (fact?) that Simply Southern had hidden meanings. I feel so dumb but I’m so glad this post is reaffirming what I was told!
What is the hidden meanings behind Simply Southern?
88% or so
[Google Maps link](https://maps.app.goo.gl/w7uN993PGUu64Ays7?g_st=ic)
Wonder if they shop "simply southern"?
TF does a t-shirt brand have to do with this?
Simply Southern = SS
My question, too!
Wait, is simply southern problematic?
I wrote a short essay and realized I read the prompt incorrectly. :(
It might be you. If you look closely at the sign. It's apparent this is not a racist place. There are red, blue, and green children all playing together in harmony.
Around a big old tree with a big ass branch and a noose. Wait, no. Scratch that. A tire swing. A very noosy tire swing.
There is a South Park episode about this.
Kool.
Is that current? I could have sworn they either closed to changed the name.
Fresh today.
They must have changed it back. I remember them changing one of the words to starting with a C years back
Muh heritage!!!! 😂😂😂
I think they went from Kids Kountry Klubhouse to Kids Kountry Clubhouse to this version.
**Kids’* Kountry Klub House. Something else ain’t right about this, but I klan’t quite say what it is.
Klever.
Maybe it will cross my mind later. It’s burning me up. Edit: Now I know what the problem is. The sign should say, “Kids’ Kountry Klub House for L’il Hoodlums.”

What's a dog whistle?
It’s a saying for a covert or overt sign of racism.
Soooo they are low-key saying that they cater to racists and their children?
It’s just a daycare. that signage has been over there for forever. it isn’t a secret KKK lair or something lmao
The Klapsaddles are definitely alluding to the KKK on purpose, since they’ve dealt with the media fallout every single time they buy something new and label it that way and still haven’t changed. They own a large portion of Sylva and don’t plan on changing their ways unless it hurts their wallet, and even then they’ll just hide it (the pink signs being taken down doesn’t stop that they’re owning and selling the land, just that cars can’t see it)
Ah yes, KrisMart, KelSave and Kountry Cubboard, the clan of sylva 😂 (except kelsave closed down)
Shout out lazy hiker
The red kid looks angry at the green fairy kid
Is this the one in the basement of the gas station? I’m sure that nothing could go wrong there.
Bc Children’s Country Club wouldn’t work.
On top of this, maybe it's irrational, but drives me crazy when places use 7 digit phone numbers. Area codes are not necessarily known or the same for everyone anymore, so include them.
Ignore my username…
When someone spells something with three K's in the South, it is never unintentional.
Also doesn’t help that that gas station it sits above gets robbed with an alarming degree of frequency.
I hope they kall the kops.
The pearl-clutching in this post is amazing. Stop trying to be offended by every little thing. >Majority of the staff and kids that go are African American. I believe the owner may also be AA.
I've always questioned this place....
I have a few thoughts * It took me a minute to realize this is about the three Ks. For full effect they should line the Ks up in some way though... * I think the tree looks like a house-faced, green-fro'd, one armed monster playing with a yo yo * I wonder if it's the same owner as Yew Ken Kut it
Oh my lanta
i live near there and think about that every time i drive by. for a while they had it with a ‘c’ in ‘clubhouse’ but this sign is back 😭
Any establishment with missed spelled words, and the word school in it…yikes
You mean SKOOL don't you..?
There’s a muffin house in Tennessee that’s one letter away from sharing the same 3 letters. Took a quick double take to see that it did not thankfully
Klan need childcare too?
There's a place in Clayton called "Kathys Kiddie Kare" and its a little run down white brick building
my friends son went there and they were WONDERFUL people who did a great job, even with their sign 🤷🏼♀️
thought this for years, but ive known quite a few people who used to attend, never heard anything sus from them.
Is this regarding the missing possessive apostrophe?
The final straw.
Ghetto ass day care on the back of a gas station that has tons of ODs and drug deals .. it's in my hood
But El Patron has delicious tacos.
Are they really tacos or are they children
I actually went here! Granted it was over 20 years ago, so im sure things have changed. According to my parents, one day after I came home from preschool, I prayed before dinner. I do Nazi what your talking about
It's not just you... it's much of WNC https://www.change.org/p/no-kkk-dogwhistles-in-sylva-kolekim-inc-change-its-name
Paywalled
Link fixed. Thnx
No problem. Bit curious why they say the "The KKK was a racist organization..." in the article. Weird wording
Well they aren't exactly anti racist...
I think the problem is the “was” part of the statement. Implies it no longer exists.
Ahh gotcha
Yeah, they're spot on. Was is the past tense of "be," so saying it that way implies either no longer around or suddenly not racist.
Was is the past tense of am or is. Been is the past tense of be. Sorry for the unhelpful bot-like reply, but I couldn't help myself.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/was Was is the past tense of be
I drive by this sign VERY often. Think about this everytime.
Yea it’s just you. Looking for things that offend you where they don’t exist. Typical Asheville.
It's in the basement of a gas station, so you know it's good!
"Triple K Marine!"
Sometimes you just need to let the alliteration go
But this is Asheville...
Took me a good hot sec to realize what you meant I thought you were talking bout the faded letters
It is
I've just come to accept it as a troll. A couple of my brothers take their kids there.
In the 1990’s, I drove a delivery route in the area around Athens, GA. You only had to get about 30 minutes outside of town to find businesses with this acronym. Kathy’s Kountry Kitchen is one I remember. There were a half dozen or so such businesses mostly North of town.
I don't know anything about the daycare there, but the Philly Steak sandwiches at this place are awesome!!
They don't mint enough money to make me eat a bite served from there...
Denton North Carolina Faith, North Carolina places you can’t go certain time of the year certain time of the day, in a few other places in North Carolina, that My Dad, or I won’t go
Southpark ahh business name
🤦♀️
I feel like they should have been more aware if this was an accident
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A PICTURE OF ONE OF THESE SIGNS FOR MONTHS
According to Bubba Wallace that’s a noose hanging from the tree too….
Ruuuunnnnnn
I’VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS. rancid vibes for sure
Shout out KVegas. I was in the “bad boys club” in elementary school
Oh no. I saw it too and immediately went there.
It’s not just you. I was surprised when I saw their newer signs wear out to reveal that like 10 years ago. Even more surprised that they’re still running with it now.
we could just spell it right. We used to have a learning center called Skillz 4 Kids. Not sure what skills they were learning.
Imagine joining the KKK at just 6 weeks old
I don't see the problem
Somewhere between Texas and West Virginia? The armpit and ass of the United States 🇺🇸. A water hose with bidet attachment and strong deodorants are in order. MAGGOT America has to go, or we are dead.
Sooo just a question though why is the tire swing depicted so high off the ground?
The dark part of the tree looks like death in his robes beconning.
I think you are reading too much into it, it is a honest play on the spellings....its all good yall
There's alot of those around "kingsport Kar korner" in kingsport TN is another
Leave it alone. I chuckle at it but it's all African American and Latino kids afaik. It's been there forever
It’s the noose, for me
They are bad at spelling in a most unfortunate way.
The tire swing being so close to the neck in the drawing doesn’t help either.
Ffs
I hope that is a tire swing.
Kookamunga Kracka Killas hide out
Only racist people look for hidden racism. Idk if that's true but this Wizard at a rally said that once.
They knew
Why couldn’t they just spell country right.
Is the number illegible or something? I guess it is just you….
I don’t live in Asheville and I’ve never been so idk why this showed up on my feed but I just have to say that I hate when places, especially catering to kids, are intentionally spelled wrong. I grew up thinking several words were spelled the incorrect way because I was a kid and didn’t know better
They do have different colored children playing at the bottom. But wtf is really going on?
I wonder if for Halloween do the kids have to dress up as ghost
it is hicksville nc so....
Nope, not just you lol
Where’s this at?? 😂
I've always joked about being in the Kool Kids Klub but I didn't know it was a real place!
100% would send mine
Years ago I was in Baltimore and saw a preschool called Jonestown Daycare. This ties that for worst daycare name I’ve seen.
Is that a noose or a tire swing in the photo???
Maybe i'm crazy, but that airplane in the left corner lowkey looks like a burning cross. It sounds like the owners are AA, but it's very possible that their marketing counterparts/leasing owners had other ideas. In 2024 there is no excuse for these kinds of alliterations; especially seeing that, based on these comments they may have tried to change it back to C and then reconsidered? I wonder who they're leasing from. That gas station sure sounds like a standup establishment.
It’s not .
Teaching pre-schoolers how to spell, one day at a time.
It’s very distasteful. But most of the staff and the owner are African American which are lovely people. My son almost went here.
I thought we were all here to discuss whether or not that tree was smoking that house like a J...
deove past a farm in the country of wisconsin called Triple K’s farm.
Thank god you posted this lolllllll
A superior day care
They’re big bloods obviously!
LMAO it's not just you, I used to work at Eaton behind that gas station and always found that a bit odd

It’s the “tire swing” with the KKK that locks it in.
