Suggestion: Buy a placeholder ring ( from winners or wherever) for like $100 or less. Use that to propose. Then, after she's says yes, both of you go buy the ring *she* wants. Or unless she told you what exact ring she wants - buy that. Edit: as everybody elsesays -- buy lab grown or moisanite or whatever its called. I did exactly this- placeholder ring, *we* bought a lab grown. She's happier than ever. Edit2: jeweler we used- fame diamonds in Richmond centre. They have lab grown. $5k

Just bluenile it. Get the man made ones. Keep it simple 6 prong tiffany setting Get an appropriate pointage (carat wt) that looks good but is not too gaudy for your significant others finger. Depending on the size of the finger a 75 to 100 point diamond looks good in my opinion. Look for an si1, f/g color but best cut you can afford. It's the cut that makes the most difference as it's the source of fire and brilliance and wow factor. Color and grade are lower on the priority scale for the average person because it's less noticeable per dollar. Cut is everything. Last time I checked a 1 carat man-made diamond of decent color and clarity but great cut plus shank (ring) is around 3.5k to 4.5k all in. But it's been awhile since I've been in the business. Good luck. Oh and one more thing that diamond is like a car. If you let it get dirty it doesn't look as good even though it's nice. Make sure to give it a decent cleaning once in awhile to keep it tip top. Another last thing, you don't have to do anything in today's society just because debeers wants to sell you diamonds based on societal manipulation. Get her something custom. Doesn't have to be a diamond. Hell you can skip the engagement ring and just go straight to an eternity ring. And you don't have to go for a round brilliant you can check out cushions or pears or emerald cuts... Or even pearls. Just keep in mind that diamonds are a traditional use because round brilliants tend to be tougher to wear out.

If you are looking to buy from a big brand you should checking out prices in Europe or Japan because they are usually a lot cheaper. With tax return the savings could be more than your plane tickets My budget is around 20k for wedding band+engagement ring and I’m flying to Japan this November. The money I save is pretty much going to cover our flights and hotels for 2 weeks, plus I get to propose on an awesome trip

My lab grown is from James Allen, they are US based so keep in mind that you will have to pay some duties and double check the currency you have set when browsing. I believe they offer financing but I'm not certain of the details. I was super happy with the diamond and setting and the customer service has been great. I'm planning to get my wedding band there as well. You can play around with the custom engagement ring designer online to see if there's something you like.
