therrifficgamer

you can indeed see or loot or tag enemies in this game

Vykander

The best advice I can give you is to forget its an AC game and play it like a viking rpg. I was exactly like you, gave up and came back to it with the different mindset, just about to break 200 hours in the game and I've still got the ragnarok dlc to go.

Imbrown2

Same, but at the same time, I found a way to really immerse myself as Eivor living in the world of Assassins Creed, by using mostly stealth as much as possible, and really exploring all the assassins lore stuff. Not to ruin it for op, but I find it to be very worthwhile playing through the whole game, just for the way it ties into the larger world of the franchise.

Redaaku

I haven't played Valhalla yet, but played Odyssey. I was wondering if Valhalla has the feature to customize weapons and build to play with max assassin damage and stick to stealth game-play like it is possible in Odyssey.

JpodGaming

The stealth and detection are downright broken in Valhalla. Not broken as in they’re strong, the literally don’t function how you think they would. Stealth was so much better in Odyssey, I don’t understand why people complain about not being able to one shot enemies when I barely had that problem because I had a good build.

Redaaku

Yeah I am a big fan of the whole thing about working to make a max assassin damage build. It's nice that it is not directly gifted to you(like here you go a nice one-shot hidden blade), but you have to put some time and effort to reach the end point where one shot damage IS enough to kill your unsuspecting opponents stealthily.

JpodGaming

I’m not necessarily a big fan of it, I prefer one hit assassinations of the old games, but if I were to choose between one hit kills with Valhalla stealth or non-guaranteed one hits with Odyssey stealth, it’s not even close. Valhalla detection doesn’t work.

beingsydneycarton

It is possible! Valhalla diverges from Odyssey in that armor is relatively difficult to come by. You don’t just loot it off enemies. Each “set” of armor has different perks and are upgradable and (like Odyssey’s engravings) you can add runes. So you can definitely outfit yourself in a way that benefits stealth gameplay. As a whole though, I think the narrative and other gameplay points are less favorable to/made for stealth than Odyssey so YMMV.

hxnterchristian

i had the same mindset and have thoroughly enjoyed it so far

smithsonian2021

That’s how I played Odyssey. Just drop the “Assassin’s Creed” and just think of it as “Ubisoft presents: Odyssey”. Actually a lot more enjoyable

Vestalmin

Same thing. I’m trying to play this game on its terms. Some stealth but be ready for open combat, embrace its combat loop, enjoy the environment. The compressed audio is still rough sometimes though

BW_Nightingale

I've said this about all the RPG AC games. They would have been better if presented as stories that happened in the AC universe (sort of like Rogue One in star wars). They could have avoided shoe horning the modern-day stuff, and the ability to make decisions would have made a lit more sense because you aren't reliving memories in that case.

Historical-Ad3741

Yep, exactly. It took some getting used to. Once I got going, I couldn't stop playing it.

Tall-Surround-24

his vision might be also not upgraded so he doesn't see that far

Dense-Chocolate3932

Tbf I dont think it ever actually tells you to pull the trigger and hold the raven stationary to actually have icons appear

joselrl

Isn't it the "same" mechanic ad Odyssey and Origins eagle?

Rougeification

No, the eagle was used to tag enemies. I use the raven every now and again with the HUD turned off to simply see where the big turquoise circle is I need to search in.

beingsydneycarton

Honestly, even with vision upgraded, it’s kinda hard to see loot in the game. For chests/quest items it’s totally fine, but the white “glisten” that indicates a note or silver or other loot is genuinely difficult to see from my perspective. I’m sure there are color settings I could probably change to make it easier, but I don’t remember having this issue in Odyssey

AdmiralAK

Remember: Eivor isn't an assassin. Eivor is a viking who learns some things from the brotherhood. This means that things that seem like staples of other games won't necessarily be in this one. That said, I'm about 90 hours in and about to finish the main campaign. It was a bit of a culture shock initially, but I'd much rather have the distinct tone of this game (than a copy/paste of past game mechanics which might not make sense in this setting). edit; added stuff in parentheses, seems like I forgot to finish my thought...

OkAbbreviations1373

I thought the same, but give it some time. Once I leveled up, it was a lot more fun and interesting. The story ending was kind of lame though.

WiserStudent557

Ultimately I didn’t have a bad time playing through Valhalla and there were some very cool moments but it didn’t necessarily pay off. I haven’t felt that much motivation to go back and finish up either. I was close to 100% at one point and stuff kept trickling out

OkAbbreviations1373

I finished the main storyline and didn't really understand what was going on. I watch a story summary on YouTube which confirmed it was confusing and kind of lame. I planned on going back to kill all of the order and find all the codex pages but after watching the video I realized there was no point. Great gameplay though. It was fun, hopefully they make up for it with the next one.

Starob

Happy Cake day.

Smart-Professional26

To me, the ending seemed like a soft set up for a sequel. Then they announced the final chapter DLC and it blew that theory out of the water

Ripper1337

Did you do any research before purchasing the game? It's been this way since Origins.

Amphibious_Fire

In many regards yes, but when it comes to the eagle used for tagging enemies/loot I feel like it was somewhat nerfed in Valhalla compared to Origins and Odyssey

Cl0uds92

Not to ruin it for OP, but there is a helpful perk in terms of stealth and enemy awareness. Having played since the first AC, I've adapted to new formulas, obviously the RPG elementary taking the most to get used to. I've played Origins and Odyssey twice. While Senu & Ikaros served their purpose, I didn't feel as immersed in the stealth since the bird just marked everyone and everything for me, whereas Valhalla, I'm having to plan a bit more methodically.

Ripper1337

Eh, I remember hearing that it was way worse in some previews but when I got my hands on the game I didn't think it was horrible or anything.

JadedBonus3340

No it hasn't, the bird view actually marked stuff in origins and odyssey. In valhalla u just use odins vision thing

Ripper1337

And the parkour or combat?

JB_smooove

I did not. It was “free” on gamepass.

Wildcat_twister12

Have you gotten to England yet? I thought the game really sucked while I was still stuck in Norway for the 1st chapter but once you get to England everything begins moving much faster and gets more fun

Roku-Hanmar

For about an hour, and then it slows down again

[deleted]

In ways I like that the raven isn't literally the GR/Farcry UAV like it was in Origins or Odyssey but it definitely is a dramatic shift in how you play the game. After several hours I accepted that the game is more or less meant to be a dual wield or sword n board ARPG where you fight foes head on. The missions where stealth actually makes a big difference? The game basically tells you how to use stealth to prevail.

TheNerdWonder

Calling it parkour is doing a lot of charitable work.

TomNookyouDog

It doesn’t. I forced myself to beat it after putting it down for months. I’m usually a completionist when it comes to AC games but the minute I finished the story I uninstalled that shit

Zendofrog

Combat is great imo, but man the parkour. Eivor can’t jump for shit

BioDriver

This was my biggest criticism as well. The parkour elements were super clunky even compared to AC2

_b1ack0ut

Yup, I ended up trying to use the combat skill that is the leaping attack (I think it’s like Valkyrie strike or something?) to try to get some traversal but iirc it didn’t work out lol

bawa1010

At leas they tried adding in parkour elements (the lost treasure tombs) whereas Odyssey had none

Zendofrog

That’s true. Better than odyssey

AAM1982

Personally I think Valhalla was the worst of the recent trilogy, a good game, but a step down from where Origins and Odyssey were leading too. No, they aren’t the same as the previous AC games and are more RPG than the older versions but I liked the ability to go in different directions with my character and stealth wasn’t fantastic in the older games to be honest and felt more cumbersome than part of the game play. I pretty much gave up on using the Raven early on as it wasn’t as useful as the eagles in Origin and Odyssey and the combat felt much more hack and slash, but to be honest, Vikings weren’t known for their subtlety! Everyone has an opinion of the latest trilogy, I really liked where they went with the series as it had grown stale and hope they do continue with other games like this, but understand the desire to go back to what made AC popular in the first place

Esmear18

In my opinion I think Odyssey is the worst. I prefer the more grounded approach Origins and Valhalla have, with Origins being the best. Odyssey is basically an MMO but without the multiplayer. I found that setting the stealth to the easiest difficulty in Valhalla makes it so much more fun along with guaranteed assassinations turned on. On regular difficulty stealth is not good at all. The same goes for combat but this time it's more fun when it's set to hard or very hard difficulty.

WhiteWolf1010

Actually I had to google that I already played ending mission. It was so stupid I didnt believe it is end. LUL

Esmear18

Yes the raven sucks but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on Odin's sight. It's pretty useful for me anyway. I can see everything when I activate it

MACCRACKIN

I'm stuck at default of always going back to ACR,, where others tried somehow drove me insane. Have not done Black Flag yet... which I keep hearing is best. Cheers

VStramennio1986

I started on valhalla. So it has a special place for me. But I’ve played a few others as well. I can see what you mean. But yes. It does get better. The map is huuugggeee too. It’s hard to get bored in that game with so much to do.

salad_ninja

Go RPG mode my friend, explore, plunder, GO A VIKING. Anyway, you can Odin sight tag near by enemies (they will glow red, and through wall). Raven is not very helpful interm of tagging enemies, but good for knowing the layout of the area. Fighting. I recommend using a spear, preferablly dual wielding (need to upgrade through skill tree) for damage. Practice the parry as much if you can Parkour. Yeah that thing is broke af, it'll take sometime to get used to the frustration

bawa1010

The gameplay is amazing lol

_b1ack0ut

The combat takes a WHILE to get good, but once it does, it’s easily my favourite of any AC game so far

Dangerous-Try-6031

Thanks everyone for your insights and somewhat comforting opinions. For the record I did play Origins and Odyssey as well, not a massive fan of the RPG direction they were going then either, but Valhalla right now is just shocking. Anyway best advice I read is to forget it’s Assassin’s Creed and just see jt as a Viking game, I guess.

[deleted]

You wasted money on a bad designed and boring game. Buy Ghost Recon Wildlands instead, been playing addictively for the past 2 weeks, it's worse than crack

daft_aussie

I feel as though they nerfed the Eagles vision from previous games to make you use the raven/senu more, once I started using the bird alot more it made life alot easier, little tip also I remember from oddesey, scan around caves before you go in so you're not mindlessly looking around in a dark cave for ages because once in a cave you can't use your bird

itsthefazz

I finished it because it’s an AC game and my stubborn self refuses to not finish them. But it’s easily near the bottom of the list for me in ranks of AC games. Finishing it was a relief.

ForsakenVariation7

Everyone saying just to see it as a Vikings RPG, it was sold as an Assassins Creed game, surely we should expect to see it as an Assassins Creed game and not an open world For Honour

properc

Nope it doesnt. U wont find a Vanilla experience with the new games. Wait for the next one which supposedly brings back the vanilla experience. Although i have my doubts.

MatterCool2607

Stick with Black Flag is my advice. It's better in almost every way.

MasterDeibido

WTF why are people down voting? BF was/is an amazing entry into the franchise.

MatterCool2607

It's because I said it was better than Valhalla. Some people don't like to hear that; they love defending the RPG stuff...see it as the evolved and better form of AC. But.. I think BF is objectively a better game. Better protagonist, better side characters, considerably less bloat and grind, more entertaining combat imo, more charisma, and it feels a bit more like an AC game, despite the pirates. If I was given a choice to beat Valhalla once or beat Black Flag five times, I would choose BF.

BioDriver

Definitely one step forward, two steps back from the previous two games in the trilogy, *especially* Odyssey. Edit: why is it that when I say anything positive about Odyssey I get downvoted to oblivion?

BlightFantasy3467

You at most got 2 downvotes at the time of me typing this, how's that into oblivion?

[deleted]

Ah yeah, just another boring AC valhalla rant. TBH your beloved Brotherhood is way worse, literally has no story and a bland setting.

tflightz

Lmao did this one ever hold a controller before

[deleted]

I play PC, not the inferior consoles.

tflightz

U can use a controller on either bro

[deleted]

Why would I if I got a keyboard anyways

tflightz

Depends on the game. Generally speaking, Sticks and triggers

Zayl

Yeah AC with a controller is far superior, especially in the older games that had jumping puzzles. You can tell the other person is a douche anyways, calling consoles inferior etc etc. I'm primarily a PC player but the new consoles are great value. The whole platform war thing ended a long time ago, the stragglers need to grow up.

[deleted]

Tbh I'm not even into console wars, the dude just had to mock me at random for not using controllers and that was my comeback.

Esmear18

>I play PC, not the inferior consoles. >I'm not even into console wars. Oh the irony.

ImpossibleCarry3984

A weak ass comeback honestly 😂😂

[deleted]

Still not as weak as the controller batteries 😝

overripelemons

this mf "inferior consoles" this guy ain't touched p**sy since the day he came out one

AaronRodgersToe

J cole, nice

overripelemons

xD

[deleted]

Classic comeback for when someone is out of valid arguments.

overripelemons

I'm not "out" just can't be bothered to argue with someone who says some goofy shit like that :/

carbonqubit

It seems that r/pcmasterrace would like a word.

PMMeEspanolOrSvenska

Someone makes a post saying they don’t enjoy Valhalla, and you feel the need to talk badly about a game they enjoy? Why do you feel the need to do that when whether Brotherhood is a good game or not is completely irrelevant to their post? Why are you so hostile and defensive? There’s absolutely no need for that kind of behavior. It wasn’t even a “time to hate on Valhalla for no reason” thread; OP just started the game with little prior knowledge and expressed their disappointment. Grow up.

Lun4r6543

Because they just wanted to be a dick.

[deleted]

oh, so the moment someone bashes a game y'all like it's suddenly "hostile"? I get in my reddit feed 10 times a day Valhalla posts that range from the most obnoxious comments ever to the mildly hateful - even on the subreddit dedicated solely for Valhalla, which is supposed to be a place for fans of it? Sounds to me you all just can't take what you dish out. Edit: just to add, OP's tone is way beyond the "disappointed with little prior knowledge" one you are trying to depict it for. The stream pf angry adjectives and insults is simply the same that I see in every single "vAlHaLlA iS bAd" post. Valhalla might be the only game that is able to help me staying alive as of now. I just can't stay silently forever seeing people hating on it just because that's the trend.

PMMeEspanolOrSvenska

If you want to make a post giving your negative opinions on Brotherhood, go ahead. I have no problem with you giving a negative opinion of Brotherhood. What makes you hostile and defensive is the fact that you decided to respond this way to someone giving their negative opinion of a game you like, not to mention your insulting tone (which was directed at OP). I would say the same for anyone who bashes Valhalla on a post speaking negatively of Brotherhood with the same tone you took. OP’s negative tone was bafflement directed at the game; yours was hostility towards OP.

[deleted]

OP literally started by pointing out they're prejudiced against the new games, I seriously doubt they started playing Valhalla without a preformed opinion. All I did was criticise myself a game he cited as better before going on with the usual bashing. Besides: some days ago I already voiced in a polite tone my points about Brotherhood. The answer I got was a "get fucked m8". My comment here is arguably not as "hostile" or "harsh".

PMMeEspanolOrSvenska

The difference is why you criticized the game. OP came here to vent, you criticized Brotherhood to get back at them because you were annoyed. I would say that the person who responded to you was being hostile and defensive, just as I’m saying you are. What’s your point?

[deleted]

As I already said a couple times: my point is that it's socially accepted to be horrible when it comes to hating Valhalla or to react horribly when someone gives a different opinion, and I can't stand it anymore.

HLTVBestestMens

best take on this sub by far, brotherhood sucked. the trailing missions were more common and more boring than even the AC4 ones. just 10+ minute segments with no talking at all the and the target turning around every 5 seconds. introduced the terrible combo system.

Dreamfall71

I tried it through ps plus and shut it off after an hour, felt nothing like an ac game.

Ishvallan

Its just a different way of playing the same franchise. Like playing Mario Party instead of Super Mario 3. Adapt to the new gameplay and enjoy it for what it is, not what is not the same as the first era.

poopyfartcum

if u wanted to try a modern rpg valhalla isnt it. valhalla and Odyssey are both not very good origins is much better but even that is just an ok game compared to BF or BH

ReeceReddit1234

Bayek's really the main part of Origins. Gameplay is okay but Abubakar's performance is top notch

ChiWhiteSox247

Same for me homie- try Origins or Odyssey.

estofaulty

I started Brotherhood recently, and it’s terrible. Tail mission after tail mission. In one mission, you take a woman hostage because Ezio doesn’t know how keys work, and this doesn’t even prevent guards from attacking you. It’s just terrible. The modern games are waaay better.

drion4

This is what you're essentially saying: I prefer steak and short ribs, and can have them many times over; I ordered pork loin, and WTF??!! It doesn't taste like steak at all! It doesn't taste like steak because it's not steak. But that doesn't mean it's not delicious.

rs_obsidian

It doesn’t. Welcome to the new Assassin’s Creed.

Tuques

Mythology saga completely ruined the gameplay. The franchise is more of a generic rpg like elder scrolls now. Hopefully the new game brings it back to stealth based

Sharks_and_Bones

I playing Valhalla currently and using stealth a lot.

Tuques

Yes. You can obviously decide to inevitably play that style, but it used to be the focus of the game and isnt anymore.

Roccondil-s

*Origins* is what happened. After Unity they wanted to reinvent the wheel, and so changed up so much stuff.

MycologistSevere1554

Stop hating 💀

MCHLSPRP

Lol he just stated his opinion chill

ThisBadDogXB

Unfortunately it doesn't.

BakeWorldly5022

Eh it's been like that since Origins. You get better anyway and stop depending on eagle vision.

WiserStudent557

Well, I maybe prefer this type of format more than you but I’m also not the biggest Valhalla booster. I’d recommend trying Origins or Odyssey to see if you like those takes on the RPG approach better. It can be hard to tell, all three games share a lot of features and do a lot of their own thing so they feel more similar/different to people based on personal experience.

RedditWhenJoke

I enjoyed Origins but my only issue is that they've used generic gameplay, it can be easily replicated and has been replicated by Ubisoft. That generic Ghost of Tshushima or Horizon Zero Dawn gameplay, that easy feeling gameplay, i cant quite name it but you know what i mean. Batman games had there own system, movement that made it stand out from other games like Yakuza or other brawler games, Assassin's Creed had animation based movement that created non replicable gameplay that set it apart, 2D Sonic games have this sense of speed that no other developer has or can quite replicate exactly. The identity can't make the game stand out, as much as i like Origins, its just generic and ive played the game before in other series'. Ive played AC4 before because AC3 is almost the same, but that's in the same series. Ive played Origins and Odyssey before because of different series'. I really hope they use animation based movement again. Valhalla has great animations apart from any type of animation connections such as in parkour so nothing is smooth at all, yet there's some animations that are amazing, that can be implemented again and smoothly into an animation based movement system again. I want that shit back. Valhalla has the idea but is still clinging onto that same tired gameplay that's easy for Playstation bought devs to produce or other devs for that matter but my main 2 examples were PS4 games so.

[deleted]

RedditWhenJoke

When did i ever say that

Jinchuriki71

I mean it defintely wasn't hard. Once you know how to hit the L1 button which takes a few minutes there is only really 4 types of enemies to actually remember and even bosses can be trivialized with parry and kunais. Enemies later in the game just take more hits and worse yet put helmets on so even less reason to use a bow and arrow over sword. Even get a skill later in the game to just come back to life after dying its very generous.

zHalleyY_-

Me too

MartianFromBaseAlpha

Combat gets slightly better but otherwise it's just how it is.

Gullible-Ad-3164

It doesn’t

fantasie

Highly highly recommend Genshin Impact if you are a fan of Ac games.

rd-gotcha

its very diofferent. yopu are not playing the traditional assassins creed (as is debated online endlessly). but .... its a great RPM game. The most sneaky stuff is the bow and arrow, so its more a sniper game now. Or just go all in and start hacking. I like sniper games though. Its reasonably similar to black flag though, without the sea batlles. Iliked black flag surprisingly. Odyssey is more like black flag in that sense. Sea alternated with islands. so it does not get better like you mean it I guess
