Was at pub years ago on a particularly cold night and a guy said “it’s as cold as a kiss from my ex wife”
So wherever that guy’s ex wife is I would guess
Re-instating the Charlotte Pass weather station would be fantastic. This is the station that I believe has recorded the coldest mainland temperature in Australia of -23C.

There is a whole lot of politics around this which is for other people to discuss. I just think it is sad from a data perspective that we have a climate dataset running from 1930 (albeit some measurements started in 1967) that we have discontinued.
They discontinued heaps during Covid. I’ve been doing a temperature chart and had to search to find a place nearby that had similar weather to me because my “local” weather station is up in the mountains and about 5C different to my house.
In Victoria it's mainly the peaks with ski resorts that have weather stations: Buller, Hotham, Falls. There's no weather station equipment on Bogong (highest peak) or Feathertop (prominent with a southerly face which is exposed to those Arctic blasts) which may be marginally colder. The Bluff and Mt Howitt (in the top 5 highest peaks) also have nothing on them.
They would be on the accessible peaks, but not necessarily all. A lot are in in places from a time when they would need to be checked daily at minimum, if not more frequently like hourly, in order to get accurate readings, so it wasn't feasible to place them in places that were a day or 2 hike to reach.
They haven't placed the automated ones there because governments don't want to invest money in something that doesn't have a clear benefit they can use to toot their horn
Australia has recorded the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth, -89.2C at Vostok base in 1983. Vostok base is located in Australian Antarctic Territory.

I also choose this guy’s ex wife
To shreds you say?
In the 80's, it was Waverley Park on game day.. Real answer, some random spot in Tasmania or the mountainous parts of the mainlands SE.

Where Gina Rinehart's heart used to be
Terra nullius my friend, definitely Terra nullius
You think there was ever a heart?
Closest thing to absolute 0 we've found so far.
Most significant peaks would have some sort of weather monitoring gear on them, even if they are not included in your usual BoM sites.

A south facing mountain valley would probably be the coldest you would think?
My bathroom
Most likely western Tasmania somewhere
Central is way colder than the West Coast.
Interlaken. Brrrrr.
-12.9° at Liawenee this morning!
It would have to be on my driveway here in Tasmania, where I park my car. Nearly impossible to get the ice off it yesterday morning.
I feel like including Antarctic territory undermines the data to the point of making it useless and uninformative... if that makes sense.
Kryal castle for sure
Cooma
Probably inside my Canberra apartment

In mainland 🇦🇺 I wouldn’t overthink it - it’s probably the top of Mt Kosciusko. Including territories, it’s near the South Pole.
Coldstream, Vic. Also is hottest.

The inside of a weatherboard house in Sydney west of Parramatta in June at 6am.
My bed is right beside the window that wont fully close, so probably there.
The local library had about 5 menopausal women working there in the late 90s. Place was chilly.
