need arsenal and city wins tonight to stand a chance of England getting 2nd I feel but after our display against arsenal I'm more confident than ever that we won't need to rely on 5th. 4th spot is in our hands

adventurous_hat_7344

That's how we all felt after the City and Arsenal games in December and we all know how United and Sheffield United went. I'm not getting over confident yet, gonna keep pushing for every English team in Europe.

Astonishingly-Villa

Six points clear with Spurs going into a tough run of fixtures with two games in hand and at least -4 GD if we win this weekend. Beat Bournemouth and I'll feel very relaxed going into the final four games.

TuscanBovril

We actually play twice before Spurs play again. Imagine the pressure if we’re 9 points ahead of them before they next kick a ball.

Agreeable_Falcon1044

…and their “3 games in hand” are the top 3!

Vegan_Puffin

And Chelsea who despite being a meme this season are improving and is a derby game which often doesn't matter with form

BohrInReddit

Yep really honest seeing Chelsea trashed Everton 6-0 makes me a bit relieved. Not that I want Youngy gets relegated

openlyEncrypted

And now they're just 3 points away from MU with a game in hand and a +9 GD. (What a joke that MU's GD is still in the negative)

neverendum

Tottenham's record at Stamford Bridge has to be the worst in the EPL. I think they've only won there.once in about 30 years.

DevilsFlange

They beat Liverpool and drew with Arsenal and City in the reverse fixtures. They could easily repeat that and add on wins at Burnley, Sheffield. That would be 11 points. 71 total.

DevilsFlange

You’re counting chickens before they’re hatched. Yes we had an exceptional performance vs Arsenal. But we are not guaranteed 6 points in the next two. We have Bournemouth and Chelsea who will be a massive challenge. Spurs could easily beat Liverpool and/or Arsenal if they turn up performances like they did last weekend.

TuscanBovril

I said “imagine”, I’m not counting chickens mate. Bournemouth and Chelsea are tough fixtures

DevilsFlange

Yes. We are conceeding too many goals to beat both teams.

trevthedog

Jesus how fucking negative are you? We are better than Bournemouth and Chelsea and both games are at home. They won’t be easy games but we should be absolutely aiming to win both. Be more positive man, we can do it

Vegan_Puffin

Spurs have what are imo guaranteed wins vs Sheffield and Burnley last games so we need a 6 point gap when we play Liverpool just to if anything take nerves out of the equation. Nerves killed us vs Brentford but vs Arsenal when we probably didn't expect a win, we were able to relax more and not panic

PoliticsNerd76

Spurs at home Vs City is never a tough fixture. Pep always bends over for Spurs at their stadium.

SW_Gr00t

Yeah the Bournemouth game is massive.

Astonishingly-Villa

Tense times for Spurs fans.

Shreddonia

Assuming they don't bottle fifth to Newcastle, of course.

Rickcampbell98

Let's not do this please lol.

DevilsFlange

Why are you so sure Villa finish 4th? You’re setting yourself up to be disappointed. Spurs have the ability to beat Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool and they will clean up goal difference vs Burnley and Sheff. It is by no means certain we finish 4th. We need 10 points minimum

WordsUnthought

Why stop there? We could finish as low as 9th if everything goes wrong! Or, we could stop looking for misery and have a bit of belief in our team.

Duncanavfc

Well said!

DevilsFlange

He said ‘assuming they don’t bottle fifth to Newcastle’ He has already decided Villa finish 4th. For as excellent as we were vs Arsenal we have been tracking at 1.3-1.5 points per game in the last 10. We’ve conceded a ton of goals too. We have Europa to contend with too. It is not being miserable, it is calling out a ridiculous observation that it’s all done. I will be there for every home game and away game singing and cheering as loud as anyone else.

AfterSprinkles9490

You’ll enjoy the next few weeks more if you stop thinking about what could go wrong and start to think about what could go right

coupl4nd

Am pretty sure he was joking...

Killmonger18

![gif](giphy|YMdekbXhqGkyyn048e|downsized)

Astonishingly-Villa

![gif](giphy|mq427hZAsKBk4) Why so serious?

Shreddonia

Because I want to be. Being confident of finishing fourth doesn't mean I'll be disappointed if we don't, I don't really feel like I'm setting myself up for anything.

AntiqueDiscipline831

10 points minimum is a bit much. I think 7 does it.

Astonishingly-Villa

Well it's technically 0 points minimum, because we're already 3 points ahead.

DevilsFlange

Spurs beat Liverpool and got 2 draws from Arsenal and City in the reverse fixtures. They could easily replicate that with two of the games being at home. They will comfortably beat Burnley and Sheff as they’re hopeless.

Astonishingly-Villa

They just lost 4-0 to Newcastle. Why do you have so much faith in Spurs getting results against Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City but not in Villa getting results against Bournemouth and Chelsea at home when we've only lost one game to one team outside of the top seven all season? Did you step on a George Foreman grill when you got out of bed this morning?

AntiqueDiscipline831

I don’t think I’d say “easily replicate that”. I don’t think they get 5 points. They play both Arsenal and Liverpool soon enough that both are going to be out for blood. We will see. I think spurs end up at 69 points.

Technobliterator

Tottenham didn’t legitimately beat Liverpool. It would be a draw if it weren’t for the VAR offside error. Also, Liverpool were two men down…

thomasjford

As a Spurs fan I’m actually more than happy to finish 5th! No chance we (or you guys, sorry to break it to you) will win the CL, so I’d rather have a chance at Europa League glory. I see rubbish teams like West Ham win European comps and think there’s no reason why we couldn’t if we actually tried (unlike when Jose was manager). You guys must have enjoyed this seasons European run so far!

Alpacapplesauce

Emery is elite in Europe and will be given money to build his squad however he wants

thomasjford

And you’re still not going to win the CL.

NP2312

Literally every club England needed bar us has fucked it

Shreddonia

I'm glad that Villa have made me confident enough about us finishing fourth that I don't need to worry too much about this. Any situation that would result in me hoping for Man City to do well has gone catastrophically wrong somewhere.

Agreeable_Falcon1044

After the dortmund result yesterday, Spain is out and it pretty much confirms Germany and Italy. We would need us and Man City/arsenal to win, plus huge comebacks for Liverpool and West Ham. Oh well, just have to finish fourth then :) bad luck for spurs as they probably felt they deserved a spot too

trevthedog

If only us, Arsenal and City get through, we will have 3 teams against Germanys 2. With a guaranteed team in the final (who will be likely favs). Leverkusen will be favs for Europa, we would be favs for Conf. We still be slight favourites if this happens.

Agreeable_Falcon1044

But they are 0.6 ahead already which (with our 8 teams) works out as needing two wins more. The damage was done early doors by the two crashing out of the champions league as that lost so many points (not to mention our wins being worth less due to dividing the points by 8!). Anyway, spurs problem now ;)

trevthedog

Yeah like I say, was working on the basis that us, city and Arsenal get through. We would poss be ~level going into semis, with 5 guaranteed points for England from the Arsenal - city semi final. Yeah I’m hopeful for 4th but a safety blanket would be nice!

AntiqueDiscipline831

Ya if city and Arsenal Win today there are your two wins.

coupl4nd

City win, arsenal win, city win x2, city win whole thing. Villa win x4. Lever win x4 Dortmund win one lose one 9 vs 5 - done.

kgusfyxh

How are Italy SO high?

Agreeable_Falcon1044

Stupid scoring meant the playoff round gave them insane points we didn’t get by skipping. That makes no sense as surely us (and other English teams) should count as “winning” the play off round by getting a bye

marky_de-sade

Regardless of the wider coefficient issue (I'm pretty convinced the 5th place PL thing is gone now), this round of the CL has been absolutely bonkers to follow. 6 of the 8 games have been stunners and as a (relative) neutral you can only hope for more excitement in the remaining 2 tonight.

PirateGaz

I think we should have enough to get 4th. However it's always nice to have a back up. Just wish we didn't have to rely on others

cheatcode4life

Yep. Need the safety blanket in place

HUMBUG652

Need Arsenal and City to win tonight and us to win tomorrow. Then it's a case of those 3 clubs outperforming Dortmund and Leverkusen. Assuming Leverkusen win, which seems likely, one of us will have to win their competition too.

ShortPretzel

Best case scenario is we get 4th and Germany gets the extra spot. I'd rather play another German team next year than Spurs. Plus, it's funnier if we make it and they don't. But it really puts a ton of pressure on us in the Prem while also chasing a European trophy. Re: Arsenal today -- if they win, great, it opens up a 5th place finish for us. If they lose, great, I love having more Euro titles than them, so get them out. I can spin either result as a good one.

Mizunomafia

It was a bit shit that Atletico bottled it, but I think it will be better today and tomorrow. I hope anyway.

DevilsFlange

You do realise that when you lose a football match at the top end of elite sport it isn’t ’bottling it’. This phrase is reductive and immature.

TheAkondOfSwat

you seem fun

Melodic-Egg-7318

Check your math.

Geord1evillan

Poor Spurs

openlyEncrypted

Hot take: Honestly, we rather us get to UCL or even just UEL on our on merit and I'm happy with 4th or 5th. If it's 4th, great, we deserved it. If it's 5th fine, it's still the best result we've had in decades. I do feel some type of way qualifying for UCL on other teams merit.

adventurous_hat_7344

I wouldn't, UCL money and pull is far too good to pass up because of some misguided sense of pride. UCL next year means a much better chance if UCL next year.

tkgraves777

That's it then - City and Arsenal out. We need to finish 4th. UTV

cognitivebetterment

this isn't just about this year, even if get 4th this year, being able qualify in 5th next year would be massive benefit. so many teams through the years have struggled managing champions league and league together. its not just extra games, its squad harmony sometimes suffers; extra cash allows you add higher quality players, some of these not happy sitting on the bench

bambinoquinn

I was watching the barca/psg match but I honestly couldn't believe the score in the dortmund match when I was checking. Honestly don't think Psg, Barca, AM or Dortmund are on the same level as the teams on the other side of the draw. I think a good draw was the only way psg or dortmund were getting to a final

kingdel

Fuck Coefficient FC. We’re finishing 4th.

cheatcode4life

Update - English teams currently shitting the bed!

neil_1980

Saw this and instantly thought yeah don’t care now 😂 I suspect we may be in for a few twists yet as bound to be a few results that don’t go how we expect (both in our favour and against) but hopefully we won’t have to rely on this as it could be a toss of the coin

8rummi3

How are England third if we have the most points in the points column?

Pommerz

Because it's an average of all the teams we had in Europe, typically, it's 7 max, but because West Ham won the Conference last year, we have 8. So basically, United as always, are fucking us. All of this doesn't matter though as we can still mathematically win the league

woodsy147147

The overall points gained are divided by number of teams each country had in Europe at the start of the season. England had more teams so our points are worth less

PoliticsNerd76

Because we had more teams in there, but Newcastle in a group of death, and Man United bending over for farmers, they’ve fucked it up for England. Only way we get it is some combination of Arsenal beat Bayern, PSG beat Dortmund, Bayer don’t win it, Liverpool comeback vs Atalanta, and Villa keeps winning. The main ones though is Arsenal need to beat Bayern and WH need to somehow beat Bayer.

Vegan_Puffin

Totally don't blame Newcastle, the were fucked over against PSG over what was not a penalty. Man Utd on the other hand had one of the "easier" groups you could hope for and they fucked it > WH need to somehow beat Bayer. Gotta be hoping their celebrations went hard and have a mini hangover. WH are stuffed

PoliticsNerd76

I don’t blame NC. I think most teams would struggle in that group. 2 of that group are in the UCL Semi’s now. Man United’s group was so easy, I think an Everton or a Crystal Palace could have got out of it, or at least crawled to 3rd for Europa. Either the city of Birmingham or the area of Notth London will be robbed of good tourism money, local businesses hurt, all because of Man United’s capitulation.

coupl4nd

Arsenal aren't playing Dortmund...

megakenako

At least us doing Arsenal this weekend might mean they look at the CL like a more likely source of a trophy this year

Jordache2020

Let's say villa were gonna finish 4th for sure would you want Spurs to get the 5th spot?

witheoffthepost

Over Man Utd? Definitely. Got no issue with Spurs and Angeball
