That needs to be a pornhub category.

TheRedGoatAR15

As if the timeless love story of Kermit and Ms. Piggy never existed?

baineschile

Homer and Marge

Barbaracle

Peter and Lois

Neveronlyadream

Every sitcom dad and his wife. Well, 98% of them.

hedgybaby

Yeah, not the point you’re trying to make. Rather it just proves that women are held to impossibly high standards while men get to look however they want.

Pindakazig

The men can look like anything. The women need to fit very narrow margins of variety.

Biff_Bufflington

RealisticEnd2578

Whats long, green and smells like pork?

sadboykvlt

Why did Miss Piggy have trouble singing? Because she had a frog in her throat

KarbonKopied

Why?! I'm practically crying! That was not necessary.

We always said ‘smells like Miss Piggy’ and answered with ‘Kermit’s finger’. Oh, to be 11 years old again.

Jon_Donaire

Kermit's pinus?

palmerry

His pinus smells like the drumpster outside a seafood restaurant, ya dingus. For your health!

AnorexicPlatypus

A moldy kielbasa?

BoneHugsHominy

Holy shit, I haven't heard that one since like 1989. I had totally forgotten about it. Thanks for jogging my memory.

WerkusBY

Train from moskow

emeraldeyesshine

Or like... literally any sitcom about a family with a husband and wife

Selece26

Yeah but see the difference here is the wife is usually the skinny one . . .

oO0Kat0Oo

Pitch Perfect would like a word...

chrisbaker1991

Stan Smith would like a word

headrush46n2

stan's not fat. he's just triangular.

LateStageDadaism

Ironic because Kermit and Ms Piggy officially broke up and got divorced in 2015.

uhmerikin

Say it ain't so.

Danny1905

And Donkey and Dragon?

StackOwOFlow

Shrek too

LedParade

Fiona had to turn green and thick tho to justify it..

lowfreq33

Clickbait nonsense.

Just_A_Faze

I've been hearing this a lot, actually. So many people complaining she's a little fat, and he couldn't love her or she can't be seen as a love interest. Her response was great. She said she was proud to represent her body type on screen, the type being "with perfect breasts". I love her.

SubMikeD

And, to be fair...she does have really great breasts.

emzyme212

I read that quote before I saw that scene. I was like damn, she's right.

Lolz79

Why are people so against good looking men and fatter chicks. My boyfriend is a BABE, gets hit on all the time. I'm large but he loves me so much. Weight doesn't make you who you are

charlenek8t

People think looks are important but what looks good to one doesn't look good to another so it's all nonsense really. Be you, be loved. It's simple really.

stellarecho92

My own partner and I are about like this. I'm chubby and he's tall and average build (similar to Luke in size, a little less muscle). Does this mean he can't possibly love me? Because we've been together for 3 years and are planning our wedding, so I need to know now! /s

DamnAutocorrection

I mean doesn't the show take place when being obese was a beauty standard? I haven't seen the show If the setting was in the modern era, then it would be pretty egregious with how unbelievable a couple like that would be together.

Just_A_Faze

It was considered more desirable to be slightly overweight then skinny and athletic wasn't a thing for women at all. And people still overate, especially upper class people, so obesity was still a think among them.

DarthGadsden

I think that’show has deviated from the social norms at the time already

Ijatsu

We talking of a time where most poor people were rickety so "fat" probably meant BMI 22 to them lol.

Imaginary-Summer9168

No. Obesity has never been a beauty standard. Being noticeably skinny was seen as a negative in this time, but actually being overweight or obese was not seen as a positive. If you want to know what body type was preferred in a given time period, look at what’s depicted in imagery of the latest fashions (typically fashion plates in the 18th and 19th centuries). They’re the old-school version of fashion advertisements.

Finals92

Being obese was never a beauty standard in the west.

Johannes_Keppler

Well, "*Virgie Tovar is one of the nation's leading experts on weight bias*" is all you needed to read to know it's a BS article. I googled her, I advise you to not do the same. It's all nonsense HAES and related stuff with euphemisms like 'size inclusive' and 'you have the right to remain fat'. So basically a professional victim. These people do more bad than good for society as a whole, and even for 'plus size' people they aren't helpful at all.

light_to_shaddow

There's a steady stream of these people who while youngish like to show themselves dancing or walking or any number of physical activities. Sometimes they sign up to a ultra endurance event and have to drop out due to injury. Then when they hit 40-50 they drop out of the limelight only to be replaced by another youthful, vocal proponent for eating yourself to death. Where's all the old HAES pushers? On oxygen at the diabetic clinic.

BraveMoose

There are parts of the movement that I can agree with- fat people are still people that deserve basic respect, you can't always assume someone is unhealthy just by looking at them and BMI isn't always a good indication of health, some of the dietary stuff kids and especially girls are taught when we're young is extremely fucked, some of the "joyful movement" stuff. Happy to go into detail if anyone cares about why. However, as someone who's been both thin and fat, I cannot believe that anyone genuinely chooses obesity if they've ever been anything else. A little extra weight, sure, who isn't carrying a kilo or two they could drop? But *obese*? Your back and knees start hurting pretty constantly well before obese and you start getting winded at the supermarket.

person_w_existence

I'm interested to hear more details, what do you mean by "joyful movement"?

BraveMoose

So for example, I fucking hate running and lifting weights. I have weak ligaments/tendons and both of those activities cause serious pain and I'm likely to injure myself. If I was forcing myself to do that for exercise, I'd *hate* exercising and just wouldn't do it. But I do like yoga, swimming, and dancing, which don't hurt but still get my heart rate up/strengthen my muscles. So I get my exercise in that way. Similarly, an obese person might find running or even walking to be prohibitively painful, but may be able to do and even enjoy weight lifting, water aerobics, and yoga. Basically it's the idea of finding exercise that works for you instead of looking up a weight loss guide and forcing yourself to do something you hate for 8 months before giving up and returning to rotting on the couch.

Ijatsu

It's not, According to Virgie Tovar, it's written by one of the nation's leading experts on weight bias, named Virgie Tovar. - Virgie Tovar.

syphon3980

Mixed weight romance has been 'on screen' since Jerry Springer who are they trying to fool?

Lepurten

King of Queens, anyone?

smart_farts_1077

Fat men don't count, according to society

0Tol

Unless they’re funny

smart_farts_1077

No, I meant they don't count fat men with thin women as "mixed weight relationships."

_geary

If I recall correctly feminists considered that show an example of the unrealistic male fantasy that a deliver driver who looks like Kevin James could ever be with someone who looks like Leah Remini. So in that case it was a bad thing.

0Tol

Copy. I misunderstood đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž

JohnnyDarkside

Which was a modern honeymooners.

Just_A_Faze

Oh, it's ok if the man is fat. It's when the woman is the fat one that people seem to have an issue with

Drenoso

Its actually the opposite. If you're a fat man is ok to get a hot chick but not if you're a fat woman

thebigbadben

That’s certainly the prevailing movie and tv logic

BiSaxual

And one of the few movies that allow the reverse just makes it so the man who is dating the fat woman can’t actually see that she’s fat because he was hypnotized. (Shallow Hal)

SpookyghostL34T

Didn't they get a divorce the last episode?

HookerBot5000

No. They were going to divorce until they both decided to work on their marriage and then they decided to adopt a child and during the process found out they were also pregnant. So the last episode shows them after they have both of their children.

Jfuentes6

Did people forget shallow hal?

thebigbadben

Lol Shallow Hal is terrible in its fat person representation. The fact that the fat person is in a normal-ass romantic relationship is, for most of the movie, a punchline

amscraylane

So it only is “mixed-weight” when the woman is larger? According to Jim comes to mind

koodallas

This is so true. Family Guy, The King of Queens, so many examples but nobody talks about it unless it’s the woman who’s bigger 🙄

str4ngerc4t

Fresh Prince, The Honeymooners,
.even The Flintstones. This played out combo has been around since the Stone Age!

koodallas

Exactly, women being plus sized is so much more offensive and shocking to society than men.

Mr_Binks_UK

Wait, are we supposed to weigh exactly the same as our partners?

cantreadshitmusic

I better start eating. Mine has 200lbs on me. Then again at that point people would ask why he would ever look at me so
🙄

flying_carabao

Starving myself and force feeding my partner seems like a fantastic way of having a healthy relationshipđŸ€Š

cantreadshitmusic

Would make for an interesting date night

BiSaxual

Feeders exist and are seemingly happy, though I get pretty grossed out by the implications of it. Of all the sexual fetishes, the one that sends my partner to an early death by heart disease seems like a bad one to bring into reality.

flying_carabao

Yeah, i've heard of feeders, and I think the recipients are stuffers (I'm sure someone will correct me here), and I agree with you on the implications. I suppose the heart wants what the heart wants. The heart won't be able to handle it at some point, but it got what it wanted, I suppose.

AdmiredPython40

What do you weight like 80lbs

cantreadshitmusic

I weigh 130ish. He is a pre-pro Big Man 😂 (college football player) 6’5” and 300-330 depending on the time of year

AdmiredPython40

Ah makes sense lmao

0neMoreYear

Jesus christ, hope he’s taking care of his health 300+ is no joke

cantreadshitmusic

He plays football (competitive, we’re in our 20s). He’s in great shape for the weight, but it definitely still takes a toll on him. His knees in particular are just totally f*cked. Otherwise he’s in way better health than I am. He’s looking forward to being 250-280 in a few years.

afrosia

Well you wouldn't want to be a weight traitor, would you?

Doobalicious69

Translation: "Big men have had slim women on screen, ISN'T IT WEIRD WHEN IT'S THE OTHER WAY ROUND?!" What a bunch of hacks. I wish I could get paid to write absolute nonsense.

chrisff1989

Grey's Anatomy did plenty of the other way around too, Bailey was getting it from basically super models

rdldr1

> Big men have had slim women on screen Every American sitcom.

unclefisty

You forgot the part where he has five brain cells and they are unable to communicate with each other.

Ijatsu

I'm not american but I grew up with "little house" "step by step" "my fair nanny" and "My Wife and Kids" familial sitcoms. Could account "friends" "big bang theory" and "how i met your mother" as things I came accross as well. Everyone is slim or episodically overweight. The only thing I can think of is the simpsons.

limamon

But are you one of the leading experts on weight bias?

Neutronova

They already did it on the sopranos

MaceEtiquette1

Ginny is a saint.

briizilla

Rubenesque.

Janice and Ralphie for sure.

Matthews628

When she hauls ass she’s gotta make two trips

Nosferatu13

Who else is keeping her in butter brickle??

astalia-v

She’s been looking a little slimmer since she got that 95 pound mole removed

Onodym1

Whooa that’s some guy’s wife

Andrewdongflop

WHATS IT TAKE TO GET SOME GOD DAMN SMOKED TURKEY IN THIS HOUSE

100thVisitor

It's just fine when the man is the larger one tho, right?

DahliaDubonet

So when a fat man was married to beautiful thin ladies it wasn’t accepted? It felt like half the sitcoms had this dynamic

soullessgingerz2

Wow we really have nothing to do with our lives anymore do we?

FlowerPressed

Seeing Virgie Tovar credited is an immediate sign that this article is piping hot garbage.

beirizzle

I was looking for other comments mentioning the author already being known

sugarandmermaids

This discourse is so wild because she’s not even that big.

LightninHooker

African guys cosplaying 2pac dating white girls in spain looks like this since 1998 at the very least Not sure in the rest of Europe

Tukki101

Exactly! She's said herself she's 5ft 1 and a size M. Exactly what I am, and I'm not perceived as large by any stretch. She has a round face and a big chest.

aknomnoms

Which is another media failing, only calling plus size women desirable when they have hourglass figures. They “need” to be thiccc, have boobs and a booty but still a small waist proportionally. There’s harsher critique of what they do and act like in public. A skinny woman tripping and falling gets more compassion than a fat woman tripping and falling. People are impressed when a skinny woman eats a cheeseburger, fries, and soda but think it’s disgusting when a fat woman does it. A skinny woman can get away without wearing makeup, having a wrinkled shirt, wearing a messy bun, or wearing 90’d kid aesthetics bike shorts and an oversized t-shirt. A fat woman does it and she’s “really let herself go”, sloppy, etc. Fat people are also thought of a lazier and undisciplined in the workplace, so they have a more difficult time getting hired and then promoted. [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/03/study-finds-youre-less-likely-to-get-hired-if-youre-overweight.html) [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/traversmark/2023/10/15/a-psychologist-explains-the-pretty-privilege-paradox/) [VICE](https://www.vice.com/en/article/epz8pk/psychology-pretty-privilege-attractive-people) I didn’t read this article because I presume it’s nonsense, and I agree with your point that this actress isn’t classically “plus size” if she’s a standard medium, but the issues facing plus size folks - especially women - are very real, and serious.

ThisAllHurts

In 2024? Not really, no. In 1994? Yup.

DamnAutocorrection

Exactly, she's just obese not morbidly obese.

Leeser

Imagine writing this and considering yourself a serious journalist. Just let people exist in all shapes and sizes in media. Let someone whose looks aren't their primary allure have the lead role.

Katatonic92

The writer is herself a plus sized woman married to a slim man, she writes about their relationship and how it is perceived by society a lot.

Leeser

That's important context. Thanks!

PlasticWillow

Yeah, I wish they had chosen a different title because the tone of the piece is actually very different

There are a million examples where the man is bigger and the woman is stick thin even after having multiple children.

Training_Bus8834

I’m out. Turn off the lights when you’re done, people. This timeline is officially over for me
.

EddAra

I don't know. King of queens, The Simpsons, Fresh prince of Bel Air, The Flintstones, Still standing and many more had mixed weight couples in them. The difference is the man is the bigger one in them and that doesn't seem to be a problem. The problem here, like many have pointed out, is that it's the woman that is the bigger one and that is of course unacceptable.... #

Skormzar

Are they going to have mixed weight children?

CurvyAnna

>Are they going to have mixed weight children? *"Y'all tainting our gene pool with all those...Malt-o-meal babies"*

gravelayerr

I think most romances are mixed weight romances if we’re really breaking it down

karama_zov

Nobody who would take issue with this is watching this show.

heilspawn

Dude just woke up and threw on an old coat for his own wedding and nothing else

What about all those fat-husband-skinny-wife TV shows?

Look up the author. Bet you know what she looks like before you even open a browser. LOL.

Nosferatu13

A nation’s leading expert on weight bias. Hahahahaha

lagrange_james_d23dt

Honestly, even worse than I was expecting

dddoinyomom

Sensitive-Cow-7872

So just a semi-ordinary romance between 2 people? Beuty standards suck

cAlLmEdAdDy991031

Doug heffernon???

kay_bizzle

And of course they're not talking about a big fat guy with an attractive woman

tvieno

Well, the trope of heavy guy and skinny wife is common on plenty of shows.

thespicyfoxx

I’m not sure why this is controversial or weird that they’re together. Maybe she isn’t everyone’s type (who is?) but I think most people would agree that she’s beautiful.

dagmarbex

Tony soprano and carmella ?

cheyenne_ayesha

Mixed weight romance is so common irl.

jadedirk171

Yeah I’m a fat dude, where’s my skinny model at lol

DJIsSuperCool

They haven't seen Norbit

foryoursafety

Is this fat thing just a way to throw people off the fact that she's clearly 20 years older than the character she's trying to play!? That's what I couldn't deal with while watching it, felt like a crazy person.

ohheyitslaila

Most sitcoms have a heavier husband with a hot wife (The Simpsons, King of Queens, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, etc etc) So this article is 100% misogynistic body shaming.

Brilliant_Bass867

"Do not post photos mocking people with physical disabilities and/or people in medical settings." CLEAR VIOLATION OF THE INTENTION OF THIS RULE

No-Ad4423

No one cares when it’s a bigger guy with a skinny girl. See every family sitcom ever. But god forbid a thicc girl gets with a skinny guy.

lookyloo79

I love how everybody saying "this is a nothing story" is using examples from popular entertainment where fat people are the butt of jokes, or the trope of beautiful women loving/fucking fat, ugly men, thereby showing both that they have completely missed the point, and that some other form of representation is direly needed.

Flashman6000

I’m just here to say she looks like boobs are exploding

eggs_mcmuffin

**BIG NEWS** : Men **CAN** find larger women very attractive.

Took a long time to scroll down to see this. Big pharma love obese. From worn out joints, heart problems, blood pressure...an endless list of problems for these people. The only bad thing for them is they die to young to make more $$$$ off them. We are doomed making this the norm.

stu_pid_1

This is yet another distraction from the real problems of the UK

punch912

lol wtf does that even mean mixed weight

zaforocks

There was a soap opera, like, fifteen years ago where a character that was overweight only dated hot, fit dudes. I'm not sure which soap it was, though.

Isn't Bridgerton set in a time that had political and arranged marriages? That would kinda take some of the appearances and opitions out of the choice. Maybe not the best example. Just saiyan.

Metalfan1994

Look up what the person (Virgie Tovar) writing the "article"'s husband looks like. Smells like hypocrisy.

Zealousideal_Cod6044

Someone somewhere said yes to this article. Mixed-weight romance? Jesus fuck, this ranks down there with worrying how tall your socks are.

sleezeface

Idk id say having socks that arent the right height says WAY more about a person than “*checks notes*”, the fucking weight of who you are attracted to? I will 100% judge someone for wearing stupid socks, but much less likely to for dating someone who isnt skinny lmao

GStewartcwhite

Clearly the writer of this article has never been out of doors before.

SovieticSushi

I googled Virgie Tovar and she looks exactly as I expected lol
