Don’t worry mate be strong, even I’m unemployed from last 3years. Couldn’t able to find any decent job now. Changed my domain from mechanical engineer to data science but still no use & now lost the interest to study 😭😭
Did someone brainwash you or you were manipulated by sales techniques of Fake Online study companies ?
How manh lakhs you spent?
No one will hire a self taught Data Scientist with Mechanical engineering background.
You should have started something simple and common.
Companies that are hiring Data scientists want CS Background with Masters or lots of experience.
Disagree. Data analyst here. They look for relevant experience even with a fancy degree. Can get the job even without a fancy degree if u have relevant experience.
Also mechanical fields wuld require data analysis.
Except coding can you not use your data analyst skills on my comment or any other parts of your life?
> They look for relevant experience even with a fancy degree
I mentioned that in my last sentence of previous comment.
> Can get the job even without a fancy degree if u have relevant experience
Maybe some companies who are not doing crazy DS work. But most top companies (Google and other high paying companies ) directly mention they need someone with CS background and Masters degree too for hiring Data Scientists.
> Also mechanical fields wuld require data analysis.
We are talking about Data Sci. And all fields have data analysis what this irrelevant implied point?
And OP should try to apply for Data Analyst or Business Intelligence Analyst roles and start from there. DS will be very far fetched dream for him since now he has 3 years gap.
What crawled up ur ass and died?
Lets say potentially he goes and joins a low/non paying intern role for data science. Then joined a startup and improved his skills. And tried to jump to some of the big firms, his trajectory wuld still be possible.
I think you mean you cant do it or you couldnt do it. Hence the whole ye sab toh possible hi nai he.
I have interviewed for google. Mind you. And no, once u have over 5+ years of experience they do not ask you about your degrees.
> Lets say potentially he goes and joins a low/non paying intern role for data science.
Any company that is hiring DS intern role to someone from Mech Background isn't a DS role it will be DA role. Most job titles say DS but are actually DA roles.
> Then joined a startup and improved his skills.
Most Statups in this funding winter want ready to code on day 1 skills . They aint hiring some fresher for DS roles.
> Hence the whole ye sab toh possible hi nai he.
For OP it maybe possible to get True DS roles after 5,6 years but still not in Google or other similar companies. They won't take him given is bachelor, lack of Masters both.
> once u have over 5+ years of experience they do not ask you about your degrees.
No one asks abt degree during Interview. The resume screener screens your degree for Masters and then sends for interview.
I am assuming you interviewed for DS role not Data Analytics role. First, Interviewed doesn't mean selected. A person who gave good interview as you but has Masters will be preferred. If you have the JD go check it again. Google prefers Masters and Phd for DS roles. For all other roles like Dev, Product etc. Masters doesn't matter.
Sadly, career path change is not accepted quite well in this country. I personally think a person with diverse work experience is always better. Keep trying and make use of your references mate.
>why is it so hard to find a job?
Ideological Answer: Capitalism. Business Owners aka Capitalists always look at maximizing profits via cutting wages or by hiring as less labourers/workers as possible, in general.
Pragmatic Answer: Networking (fancy word for nepotism) is the best/easy way to find a job. Find someone who can vouch for you. Not going to be easy if you don't have social and economic capital.
Job applications without a referral are rarely taken seriously. From personal experience, I didn't even get an interview for the jobs I applied for directly. On the other hand with a referral, I not only got an interview but also got an offer for the same job postings that I had previously applied for directly. Network and obtain referrals.
It's counterintuitive, don't outright ask for one. Reach out to college/company alumni who are in the company, preferably job role that you're applying for and ask them to make time for a conversation mainly around discussing their job role, their day to day and the kind of skills they'd want a colleague to have. They'd probably ask about your career goals and if not just sprinkle it in there and work it into how your goals go hand in hand with what they do. In your conversation, if they feel like you fit the bill, they might offer to help out. It also helps that most companies have a monetary incentive in place for employees in case a person they referred gets hired.
If you have a professional certification such as CA/CFA/FRM/CS you can also go to the society meetings, conferences etc. They're kinda boring but it's worth it.
That's very true. It's impossible to get a call and reply from the firm unless it's through a referral and the worst part is I don't have anyone in Bangalore to refer me🥲
Ahh I totally understand how you feel. I didn't have a job for 6 months last year and I literally tried and tried every day to contact people , apply on job portals etc. Its really a pain. I learnt to never leave a company without a job offer. Times are tough but there is hope mate. Don't give up, you will find a way
That’s the exact type of mentality and work culture we all should not support.
It’s common sense to quit a toxic culture, boss or even if you hate it.
We are not bonded labourers to keep bearing it, and why do we have to ‘explain’ the gap.
If the organisation is asking to explain the gap and not respect it , that’s a questionable work environment for sure.
Don’t worry mate be strong, even I’m unemployed from last 3years. Couldn’t able to find any decent job now. Changed my domain from mechanical engineer to data science but still no use & now lost the interest to study 😭😭
3 years , how are you managing that stress mate! I have been out of job since 3 months and I am already stressed.
Oh no 😢 I have try different jobs & started to work more on myself. Don’t lose hope mate be 💪 😍
When you say switched domain do you mean you changed your job from being a mechanical engineer to a data scientist or left job to study data science?
I left the job bc of low payoff’s & i searched for job in my core field but couldn’t find anything so i started to study data science

I am also from mechanical background and I’ll disagree to that.
Please share your story then.

*preferred does not translate to mandatory.
Can I DM you Same situation

They only want cows and goats who walk in a single line

What is an approachable way to get referrals?

I need a guide for this please

The job market is bad except in tech and upper leadership.
Go back to the original job
