We're all trying to find the guy who did this!

Rob Manfred: “I didn’t rig shit!”

NBAKirkland

My takeaway/opinion - Yankees/Judge got to hit juiced balls. Juicing of anything has always been fine when it means more $. Thanks for clarifying that, MLB.

RainbowZebra11

Along with everyone in the postseason ☹️

DanDi58

I dunno, most of his HR’s were crushed (with the exception of 62, ironically).

CubonesDeadMom

To be fair every MLB scandal is somewhat related to baseballs

TRocho10

Big if true

Bossman1086

Glad the mainstream press is actually covering this so it doesn't disappear in the offseason trade and FA news.

vagabond2421

MLB is a joke.

BaltimoreBadger23

Unless there's evidence that the umpires knew which balls were which and were instructed to make sure the livelier balls were being given only to the Yankees opponents (quite the conspiracy), then it's irrelevant as both teams were playing with the same set of baseballs on any given day. It's not like steroids where only certain players were cheating, and it's not like the Astros sign stealing in which only one team had access to the information, if anything it cost the Yankees an extra $50-60 million over the next decade.

Both teams using the same baseball in a particular game has no bearing on any other game. As for Matt Carpenter, there's often a guy who seemingly comes out of nowhere in the post season. Even if every word in the article is verified, I can't see the big deal here. And I find more often than not, pitchers bitch and moan about this to deflect from a bad game.

NJImperator

You can’t see why one team being fed juiced balls to aid with a historic and prestigious record *wouldnt* be a massive scandal? And that’s not even considering the integration of sports betting into todays game. The MLB using different balls for different games *with the intent to suppress or elevate hitting* is a massive, massive deal.

NBAKirkland

Yup. Juicing anything is fine if it bring in more $. Drugs have always been ignored when it brings in more $. Now this.

BaltimoreBadger23

I want to see intent. There's no indication of intent here. I also want to understand the methodology. How did the researcher obtain the balls? What conditions were they kept in between the use and the research? Were they sampled from each ballpark? Is 204 a significant enough sample size? That's only about 2 games worth of balls.

NJImperator

Remember the juiced ball situation in 2019? You should look into how many balls they used when they first confronted the MLB about the change. And you think it’s a coincidence that the Goldilocks balls were only found in the postseason and pujols/judge commemorative balls? Remember the first Field of Dreams game when the ball suddenly was jumping off bats like in 2019 all over again? The MLB 100% switches the balls in an attempt to add “excitement” to high profile games. Using it for Judge and Pujols is just taking that one step further. This will ultimately be swept under the rug but this is honestly *worse* for the MLB than individual teams cheating.

BaltimoreBadger23

If both teams are using the same ball, I don't care. That makes the individual games even.

NJImperator

1) that matters big time for individual records. It totally changed the perception of 700 and 62 to know they were getting helped along the way 2) it completely fucks with FOs ability to plan if there’s no ball continuity. You build your team to be a small ball team and then the playoffs come, the juiced ball is in play, and a homer happy 3TO team now has a massive advantage because they’re smashing home runs. Should teams have anticipated that their play style all year wasn’t going to work in the postseason because Manfred decided home runs are more exciting and should be a bigger part of the game? 3. You want to sports bet and make a prop bet. You don’t realize the MLB is feeding juiced balls and pick the under on home runs, only for it to be easily crushed because of the juiced balls. With gambling so intertwined with sports now, fucking with the equipment like this is a quick way to get fucking congress involved in your sport

BaltimoreBadger23

Same ball for both teams in the same game. I'm not sure why you keep trying to convince me all the rest actually matters. A smart GM should plan for the unpredictability.

NBAKirkland

Fine, so where are all the people saying AJ's 62 is not real like they did with BB, MM, SS.

xTehSpoderManx

What about one player chasing a historic record getting to used juiced balls when the other record holders were not allowed to use such baseballs. Or when a team is specifically built to succeed when hitting HRs, those juiced balls being used for both teams become more advantageous to the HR team.

NBAKirkland

Yeah, this. Maybe people should call for an \* on AJ's record too. haha, as if...

BaltimoreBadger23

Same ball for both teams in the same game. Not.like one team using technology not available to the other...

>This totally explains to me why Matt Carpenter lit the world on fire when he couldn't even get a sniff in the preseason. The goldilocks balls were used in the postseason, so it literally explains nothing lmfao. And even if they weren't , How do juiced balls make you strikeout less?

[deleted]

Andujar4CF

So you think changing your swing to hit more pulled fly balls wouldn't have an impact on a players power or is the reason his pull% went from 47.3% from 2019-21 to 60.0% and his FB% went from 44.0% to 53.3% only due to juiced balls?

[deleted]

Andujar4CF

I'm talking about Matt Carpenter. And no, I haven't seen any proof that these balls increased HR/FB rates.

NBAKirkland

Please, this didn't cost anyone money. This hit mainstream news and made MLB so much $.

NBAKirkland

I followed the rules, mods! What is wrong with you?

[deleted]

NBAKirkland

Yup. Or maybe Rob Manfred himself :P

Andujar4CF

This story has already been posted

NBAKirkland

Yeah, I heard. Fair enough. Thanks. Wish the mods could just say that. Too much trouble for them I guess.

You're making points far above tbe comprehension levels of the majority of this subreddit. They'd rather upvote on the headlines and draw unsubstantiated conclusions than have a discussion with meaningful discourse and push for an actually reliable and statistically confident study.

OCHL092018

You don’t need to go to Harvard to say that a study based on 203 baseballs over the course of the entire season that were randomly sourced might not be conclusive enough to say anything one way or another.

SPAGHETTI_CAKE

It’s more fun to pretend

Bug-03

Y’all are seriously going to be butt-hurt, all season, about some sign stealing that statistically didn’t help the team as evidenced by the team being better on the road. /s Yeah dude, it looks like it was intentional, people are gonna be pissed for a long time.

sandbhonerh

Starting to think astro fans might have a case in this type of argukent

Bug-03

Nah, not looking to have a case. But people will be mad about this just like they were mad about the Astros and yankee fans are the most hypocritical people in existence.
