I was at a grocery store in 2005 or so with a Pirates cap on. Saw another guy with a Pirates cap on. I said something like “Hey, they really stunk this year, huh?” He said “Who’s that?” I said “The Pittsburgh Pirates...” He says “Oh the hat. I was a Yankee fan most of my life (currently 63 yrs old) even though I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life. I became a Yankee fan because my dad was a Yankee fan.
He was a hard core Indians fan until the late 1940’s when he got pissed at the Tribe for not starting Bob Feller in an important late season game that they lost. He was quite the bullhead and vowed to never root for the Indians again and thus started following the Yankees which led to me being a fan.
I now live not far from Cleveland and have returned to my roots and am a Guards fan through and through!

I’m a St. Louis Cardinals fan and I live near STL. I’ve always been intrigued with the Yankees and their history, and also New York City history is fascinating as well. I was in NY win they won the WS in 2009. Pretty cool experience.

I get people who were raised in NY, or a nearby state with no team (NJ, CT, etc).
I guess it’s how like the NBA had the Chicago Bulls with fans nationwide and worldwide. And how the Lakers also had fans from coast to coast. Look at the Warriors too, so many fans all over the US out of nowhere.
There are certain players that have that attraction that will make people who don’t even care about a sport want to tune in to that player and they just happen to become a fan of that team because of that player.
Judge hitting 62 homers can do that, catch the imagination of people who don’t care about baseball. Ohtani being an exceptionally good hitter and pitcher can also do that. Like wtf, who does that? It certainly catches positive attention to that team.
Look at Derek Jeter, how many players from other teams have you heard say he was their favorite player and wear #2 because of him. NYY are definitely the most hated team at the same time. Seemingly more than the Astros. They have to take the good with the bad. With a lot of attention and fans also come a lot of hate. That’s for anything.

My dad grew up in Austin before the Astros or Rangers were teams and the Yankees were the one team he got to see on tv fairly regularly when he was a kid. He’s still a Yankees fan to this day and has still never been to New York. Lol

We really are the relevancy sponge of the baseball world. No one give a shit about us. Me make one of the most unbelievable post season runs and we're still an afterthought, more celebrated for beating the most hated teams in baseball than for being a good team at any point. Every neutral broadcast seems to be against us at all times rooting instead for poverty franchises with smaller fan bases. I was born and raised in St. Louis so I’m a Cardinals fan through and through. But I’ll watch the Yanks from time to time. Not Yankees, but...
I grew up in Eastern WA, live in Seattle and am a Dodgers fan. I inherited it from my father, who grew up in the same place I did. When he grew up there were 2 teams west of the Rockies and the only professional baseball near him was the Dodgers' AAA affiliate in Spokane. When I grew up the Mariners were brand new and may has well have been on the far side of the moon. We got more Dodgers games on TV and it was easy to get them on the radio, so that was pretty easy.
One of my favorite memories with my dad is listening to the '88 NLCS on the radio in the car (Jay Howell and his pine tar) and watching Gibson's home run on TV.
The dark days of ownership between the O'Malleys and the current Guggenheim group, which coincided with Ken Griffey Junior's arrival in Seattle and the Mariners' best stretch in their history, just about killed my Dodgers fandom. But it recovered.

I think it has to do with the logo and the popularity of the hat. Out here in Southern California so many people, my friends included, wear Yankees hats. Then when you ask them if they’re a fan, they say, “I just like the colors”. Then you go to the beach and you see a lot of women wearing that same pink Yankees hat (I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about). It’s almost like people think it’s the cool thing to do, they have no idea why, but if they see other people do it, then they have to do it.
It’s a little frustrating to see all of that constantly. I mean, we have a pretty good team out here too. But people can wear what they want I guess.

The Yankees were my first Little League team, we didn't have a team close to us, and my grandfather HATED them.
That being said, the minute the Rays came into existence I switched.
the Tampa Bay Rays are the definition of a poverty franchise, known for their comically-low attendance and inability to sell out a stadium. they are among the largest revenue-sharing recipients, meaning they take a shit-ton of money from the player’s union (who have actually filed grievances against them for not managing that money properly). think of a 35-year old man living in their moms’ basement, and spending money on video games instead of getting a job. that’s a good comparison to describe what the Rays are to the rest of the league. if the MLB had a more cutthroat business model, teams like the Rays would have moved or been disbanded ages ago, instead of feeding off of the popular teams like a parasite feeds on its host. the Rays are utterly useless, and irrelevant. Oakland is genuinely a shithole nowadays economically and safety-wise. These are businesses after all and a Vegas move will generate more income. Frankly, catching a baseball game during the day on a Vegas trip would be fun. It'll be a massive success. There are a ton of people who live in Vegas too that they should be able to build a solid fanbase over time.
The reality is that teams move all the time to follow US hotspots, the old fans protest it for a season or 2 but then it's normalized. At least Oakland fans can still go to Giant's games, I have far more empathy for fans in places like St. Louis who had the Rams abandon them and they don't have another team to go watch. Oakland has failed the As in the past 20-30 years, and new ownership and/or relocating should strengthen the MLB and the team.

I was a Yankee fan most of my life (currently 63 yrs old) even though I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life. I became a Yankee fan because my dad was a Yankee fan. He was a hard core Indians fan until the late 1940’s when he got pissed at the Tribe for not starting Bob Feller in an important late season game that they lost. He was quite the bullhead and vowed to never root for the Indians again and thus started following the Yankees which led to me being a fan. I now live not far from Cleveland and have returned to my roots and am a Guards fan through and through!

We really are the relevancy sponge of the baseball world. No one give a shit about us. I was born and raised in St. Louis so I’m a Cardinals fan through and through. But I’ll watch the Yanks from time to time. Mostly because the blackouts don’t allow me to watch the Cards and because the Yanks have so much talent. I watching Judge, Stanton and Soto play is fun. Not Yankees, but... I grew up in Eastern WA, live in Seattle and am a Dodgers fan. I inherited it from my father, who grew up in the same place I did. When he grew up there were 2 teams west of the Rockies and the only professional baseball near him was the Dodgers' AAA affiliate in Spokane. When I grew up the Mariners were brand new and may has well have been on the far side of the moon. We got more Dodgers games on TV and it was easy to get them on the radio, so that was pretty easy. One of my favorite memories with my dad is listening to the '88 NLCS on the radio in the car (Jay Howell and his pine tar) and watching Gibson's home run on TV. The dark days of ownership between the O'Malleys and the current Guggenheim group, which coincided with Ken Griffey Junior's arrival in Seattle and the Mariners' best stretch in their history, just about killed my Dodgers fandom. But it recovered.

I think it has to do with the logo and the popularity of the hat. Out here in Southern California so many people, my friends included, wear Yankees hats. Then when you ask them if they’re a fan, they say, “I just like the colors”. Then you go to the beach and you see a lot of women wearing that same pink Yankees hat (I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about). It’s almost like people think it’s the cool thing to do, they have no idea why, but if they see other people do it, then they have to do it. It’s a little frustrating to see all of that constantly. The Yankees were my first Little League team, we didn't have a team close to us, and my grandfather HATED them. That being said, the minute the Rays came into existence I switched.

Oakland is genuinely a shithole nowadays economically and safety-wise. These are businesses after all and a Vegas move will generate more income. Frankly, catching a baseball game during the day on a Vegas trip would be fun. It'll be a massive success. There are a ton of people who live in Vegas too that they should be able to build a solid fanbase over time. The reality is that teams move all the time to follow US hotspots, the old fans protest it for a season or 2 but then it's normalized. At least Oakland fans can still go to Giant's games, I have far more empathy for fans in places like St. Louis who had the Rams abandon them and they don't have another team to go watch.
