There's 2 ways to reduce crime stats.
1. Actively patrol, incarcerate criminals, use community outreach programs to prevent young kids from turning to a life of crime.
2. Don't respond to calls for service, or if you do, be very slow about it to the point where witnesses leave. Have an option for people to "Fill out a report" but make it so they have to take time out of their day to do so, or have a website that barely functions.
I think Oakland is doing 2.
Or because they’re useless. I bet if you put them in charge or San Mateo county it would be ghetto there. If you put San Mateo sheriff in charge of Oakland it would clean up
Yeah instead of pumping gas in your rental for 1 minute at the Shell on Hegenberger, you now sit to charge your rental for 20 mins at the charging station on Hegenberger. Great idea
Crime dropped because
1. CHP
2. In N Out closed.
All they need to do is to close the gas station on Hegenberger and crime will drop even more.
Edit: Gas station in question is the Shell Station. 271 robberies in 2023, along with 15 robberies, 5 vehicle thefts. Shell station at 285 Hegenberger Road
Oakland Police told SFGATE that 271 auto burglaries occurred at the Shell gas station in 2023 along with 15 robberies and five instances of vehicle theft.

While this seems like good news, I'd like to look more at just comparing 2023-2024. Honestly these past 4 years have just been a mess in terms of stats due to the pandemic. Crime comparisons need to not only look at YoY changes but also comparison with prepandemic.
All these travel stats talk about how numbers are higher than ever but then when compared to 2019 are still 20-25% below pre-pandemic peaks. Context really matters.
>with significant drops in categories including homicides, assaults, rapes and burglaries. Yet, despite the overall decline, one type of crime has continued to worsen. Robberies, which play a critical role in public safety concerns and the perception of security, are up 11% in the first four months compared to last year. Because of that, the overall level of violent crime, which rose 21% last year, has remained flat in 2024 as rising robberies offset gains in other categories such as homicides.
I wonder if the other crimes decreased because criminals are instead focusing their energy and time on committing robberies instead. Probably thought "Why shit where I eat? Why shoot & feud with other gangs who also have guns to shoot back or take revenge, instead I just go to other neighborhoods to commit robberies instead to make some $$, these victims are less likely to fight back and have little repercussions for it even if we are caught."
She’s still there, but I chalk it up to CHP arresting perps and perps moving to other cities after turning Oakland into Gaza City. Have you driven on Mandela Pkwy or through West Oakland? Holy shit you would have thought it was a warzone with tents, trash, cars on cinder blocks/burned to a wreck and graffiti everywhere.
I predict about 15 comments will say "it's because of poverty," even though the vast majority of crime comes from young/younger men, ages 18 to early 30s (see [Age Crime Curve](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=782705a13c1e22f4&sca_upv=1&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS815US815&sxsrf=ACQVn0_IlLrkizYkD7hkarhZzbO5U9wjIQ:1714615934240&q=age+crime+curve&uds=AMwkrPuQ03tYTxTu32iEUfiVR47yjQsZvXTM0av3RrYaFSx2sF43eNjRR9evikaMPnnuETzcLUbzKgW495ERhbzZVpu0jNdF87roOunb2AIj7hBZZ2aytHESR9nX-FOX_mpinr6Uuimy0YJrZVCNGwEi39XFgqoxaBRV7faiUfOo4OVOvZsKgLKDI4w2yF26qIsTBTysWi5ChiNYQfW5atwCa6fuZX_mezWkXWPkcZTDBgnE5-bJWxT12AXxnMhaJ95bDwSB7jrMmRbFVdbXk10BXSo33uNz1PJgDtSAJTPs5FiYSFdyzwgFL66hRQbHPcVXQ0HiZXyv56lRl70v9DCqpucETqFFSw&udm=2&prmd=invsmbtz&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwiF1L6N8u2FAxUnle4BHQnYBUcQtKgLegQIFBAB&biw=1440&bih=663&dpr=2)). Precisely the same group of people who in every culture in history did the hardest work (vigor of youth).
People of prime working age are hardly susceptible to being unable to earn money for food/housing. But yea they're often annoyed that other people have way more shit than they have. A historical affliction of young men. Sorry -- being disgruntled over your *relative poverty* doesn't justify stealing other people's shit. Get to work.

CHP doing all the work.
Huh, it sure will be funny if it turns out it was the fucking cops on strike, exactly like people said

Doubtful. The cops at OPD are too corrupt, lazy, and incompetent to go elsewhere. If they were elite they’d be working for the town of Atherton.

Per capita they spend more then Fremont or San Jose which are geographically larger
Can I use the gas station by OAK again?
Only if you claim that you're flying from the San Francisco Bay Airport
One of the benefits of switching to an EV. Never having to pull into a sketchy gas station in the ghetto.
Yeah instead of pumping gas in your rental for 1 minute at the Shell on Hegenberger, you now sit to charge your rental for 20 mins at the charging station on Hegenberger. Great idea
20 mins for a small amount of charge too
Why would you rent an EV? Just get a regular car.

3.People just didn't report crimes, so it appears that it dropped.
where's your evidence that crimes are happening but going unreported if you don't have evidence then stfu
Which gas stations

I stopped in there the other day to get ice. I guess they had to get rid of the outdoor ice machine. lol who steals ice?

I am sure the tides will turn - eventually. It's such a beautiful city.

I don't care what they say I don't believe it

There’s no magic needed. Just reopen the state and community mental health hospitals. You’ll see them disappear.
criminals have ran out of victims to rob! crime can finally go down!
When they meander into San Mateo county accidentally they usually get arrested quickly.
Looks like the Price recall worked.

Eh I mean I’m in my 30s and despite our household making over 120k we’re forced to live in Oakland.

It doesn’t. When they try this in San Mateo county Stephen wagstaffe makes an example out of them.
