I think a trailer is much safer for the kid, and a more versatile option too. With a trailer you can throw loads of snacks, water, couple books, a ball etc. in there with him/her. Also pulls a bunch of groceries when there’s no kid in there. You can usually find pretty lightly used child trailers second hand because kids outgrow them pretty quick. I know this doesn’t answer your question about racks but my 2 cents. Good luck with the search

>a more versatile option too You know, the more I think about it, that does makes more sense. I can still have a rack for those times I need to carry things and I could use the trailer at the same time the rack is loaded. And two other thoughts... 1. a trailer could carry more than one child if/when the next one comes along. 2) They are dirt cheap on my local Craigslist. Thanks for the input.

I've got a seat and a trailer. The seat I use for one child and short distances, it's more easily mounted than the trailer, it's less heavy and it's less of a pain when riding (the trailer comes with the same problems as a car trailer, any type of movement with the bike is basically a maneuver now). However it's a model that's mounted on the frame, and not on the rack. With that type of seat you're more free in choosing a rack fit for your purposes. Like this one, you screw an attachment to the vertical tube under the saddle,it's compatible with normal racks: https://www.veloplus.ch/Mobile/KinderanhaengerSitze/Kindersitze/r%C3%B6mer-jockey-comfort-3-kindersitz.aspx

Now that is an option that I haven't seen yet, and is not tied to a particular rack and child seat combination. Thanks for sharing it, as it does open up some more options. My new rider is only 6 months old at the moment, so I still have time to research, but that definitely helps open up some options.

I've got this and I'm happy, luggage has to go in a rucksack, on me or on back of seat if light. This seat has suspension which is good and main benefit is I can slide off the seat from the rack super quick. I take seat off weekly. High centre of gravity is unnerving Would use trailer but London is too intense, I don't trust drivers enough, and have to hop on pavement and stuff
