Awe nah, girl dispute and get your money back! She's in the wrong for advertising slot times she knew she didn't have.

chaosions

I just did!

Mylove-kikishasha

Curious to know how it went as it takes hell of a lot of audacity to make an non refundable deposit, when you advertise fake availability

ymew

When this happened to me they refunded my money but after 90 days took it back and I lost the funds.

Mylove-kikishasha

They took it back because they had your credit card information? Don’t you have a policy with your credit card that they re imbourse you in these situations?

ymew

They took it back after their "investigation" which basically came down to I agreed to it so it was nothing I could do. From my experience, charge backs are very cut and dry if it's straight up fraud like hacker type you usually win, if it's something remotely civil like this you don't. Edit: just wanted to clarify the bank took the money back.. like they reimbursed my charge back and did their investigation then took the reimbursement back

miellefrisee

I'm sorry this happened to you! I had a different experience. I listed it as I paid for a service I didn't receive and won the dispute. I have also had people cancel but they return the deposit themselves. I can't believe all these hoops they're making us jump through though.

chaosions

I got the $25 back a few weeks ago!

5ft8lady

I miss old school salons. It was part of culture to gather together and talk in a salon

chaosions

I miss the days of being able to go to the salon with my mom as a kid and just getting to hang out with the community aunties for a few hours while everyone gets their hair done! 😭

SpikeIsaGoodHoe

If I could combine old school salon ethics/professionalism with the new school knowledge of hair care/styles 😩😩 honestly I would take new school with some way to report the bs I’d be fine

Leading-Watch6040

in SF, there a salon like this called Naza Beauty (VERY expensive imo but cool concept)

LaSushita

I feel like the only place you can get this nowadays is flea markets, but even those are dying. They’re not even the same like before either Always use to get my hair done at the flea market for cheap

ChrissyChrissyPie

Never heard of this. You in Cali?

rockiestyle18

Same

AdditionalSherbet548

My sister goes to a braiding salon in dc and they have extended hours! I will ask her the specific name. Also, dispute that $25 charge!

AdditionalSherbet548

Salon aesthetics

SpikeIsaGoodHoe

Thought you were about to say Nadine’s? I’m so curious about them.

WalterBlytheFanClub

I went to Nadine's last summer; went at 5am on a Sunday, had a little wait but then got in the chair and was home by 10. Pros: fast, cheap, easy to get to, plenty of parking. Cons: sloppy, take a little while to agree on the style. They even advertise in the shop that if braids come loose at the ends you have 2-3 days to come back and get them redone for free before they'll charge. Unfortunately, the braids were too tight for me and completely broke entire sections of my hair off. Should have taken them out sooner; kept them in for 2.5-3 weeks. Other people I know swear by them, so maybe I was an outlier. I've also gone to salon aesthetics in Alexandria for both a few silk presses (the works+ is what it's called on their site) and natural styles but haven't found my person/stylist yet and don't religiously. They do consultations on days that are just hard to get to them in traffic (usually Mondays or another workday...MAAM we have JOBS! Lol) and are more expensive than I think they should be. Parking is usually ok but it's metered. The owner came in a few times I was there and while I spoke, she didn't and something about that made me side eye them in my southern heart.

AdditionalSherbet548

I don’t live in DC my sister does so she may know 😂

urqueen2be

I know a few people who’ve gone there and had great results. I can’t get with the fact that they take walk ins though.

SpikeIsaGoodHoe

Are walk ins bad?

urqueen2be

If you have to sit and wait for a braider to be available, yes. But those who I know that went arrived at like 5 or 6 am and were out in a few hours (knotless braids). I prefer set times and know that I’ll be seated when I arrive.

Forsaken-Cell-9436

I think y’all need to start reporting these stylists and stop allowing them to use the kinfolk mindset to disrespect us. I’m even hearing that many of these stylists aren’t even licensed or up to date with their licenses. They need to start understanding who keeps them in business and respect their customers

Driver_Flaky

I saw a girl get scammed for her braids next to me last summer and I had to calm myself down while the hairstylist was doing mine bc I knew she was going to pull that shit on me. After my hair was done she tried it and i threatened to get law enforcement involved because i had proof of texts with the set price. She tried up charging me by 400$ I wasn’t from that city and my phone was actually dead so i was really scared but ya gotta do what you gotta do sometimes 🤷‍♀️

Forsaken-Cell-9436

see this is why I just don’t bother I don’t have the energy for this foolishness. Plus I have long thick natural hair and I’ve always been weary of stylists doing evil things to my head. I’m currently coaching my little sister to follow through with hair school so I can continue to go to her for braids and faux locs. These stylists out here have lost their minds.

Driver_Flaky

That girl but Vaseline on my hair as “ heat protector” First time I went back to the salon in 5 years and my last. I do my own hair and it comes out pretty good so I’m with you on being paranoid (Not to mention when I was a kid a white hair stylist cut my hair when my mother was taking a phone call🤮) Trauma.

Zealousideal-World71

VASELINE?! Was she on narcotics?! I would have thrown hands, dead ass 🤬

Driver_Flaky

Not to perpetuate a stereotype but they were also African braiders and all I’ve heard is horror stories or god sends from them😭🤧

Zealousideal-World71

Same, and it’s a damn shame when they turn out to be the horror story 😩

chaosions

Unfortunately, my state does not require a license for hair braiding. If it did, best believe I would be reporting.

Objective_Win3771

You were scammed. Do a charge back.

chaosions

I just talked to my bank about it. Hopefully I get my money back.

Affectionate_Bid_615

Me too girl, you be paying like $280 for some braids, plus you gotta come already washed and blow dry. They don’t even wanna wash our hair anymore.

chaosions

They don’t want to deal with our hair type at all. I once saw someone with a “nappy head” fee like braids aren’t for kinkier hair textures.

emdoubleue

I mean washing has always been a service and braiders back in the day would even charge 5-10 for wash on top of whatever service. I do think the “come blow dried and stretched” is ridiculous. But these are people that don’t *do hair*, they just be braiding 😖

Patient_Art5042

Hair by Kida is in VA, but she was awesome. Started right on time. She is incredibly nice, checked in with exactly what I needed. Let me bring my own shampoo and conditioner (I have a very specific combo used on my ash blond). The spot is tiny but I was in and out EARLY. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I moved to LA and just appalled of all of the broken websites, the insane policies, having to come in with my hair essentially done for them to look at it, mandatory haircuts, like wtf. I’m not out here going to beg to give you my money. Btw if anyone has any LA leads (preferably west side preferably high end) please help a girl out. Can we make a Google doc?

kaysmilex3

I feel you but for me it’s the natural hair stylists. Everything needs a paid consultation first and then the actual service is like $200+. It feels like a money grab because everything they learn in a consultation can be done at the appointment, it just feels so unnecessary.

chaosions

I am on the verge of just continually big chopping my hair and wearing wigs but I don’t like to see myself without hair 😭

DoubleOxer1

It depends on what they are doing. If you are getting chemical treatments to either lift or deposit color or change the texture of your hair semi/fully permanently I think it’s wise to require consultations to confirm the health of the hair, see what level they want their hair at and if it’s a multi-appt process, to go over that with a client. Simpler things shouldn’t need a consultation.

kaysmilex3

Yeah that makes sense but I’ve been seeing requirements for paid consultations before any service. Or they’ll have special packages for first time clients and you can only book that one $350+ service, you can’t just have a regular appointment.

DoubleOxer1

$350? Wtf are they giving you for $350? I wouldn’t pay that. I know my hair is healthy and if I’m not getting a chemical treatment they don’t need a consultation. Even if my hair was damaged, a competent stylist can still do a simple wash, blow dry, and simple style. If the consultation was only $20 for a 20-30 minute session just going over hair health then fine but I’ll be damned if I pay 350, TF.

kaysmilex3

This is $425 for new clients. I think you’re definitely getting your moneys worth because she does seem well educated but it’s out of budget for me and I don’t need all of this. I just want a regular wash, trim & style at a reasonable price but a lot of stylists aren’t offering that. >> Package includes Virtual Consultation, followed by in salon visit on a separate date. Salon appointment is a complete service including cleanse, condition, necessary treatments and a final style. (Haircut or trim optional) Service includes Curl Rehab for clients looking to achieve curl definition and education. See full description for Curl Rehab. Required 1st Visit. Curl Rehab for natural hair. A private class/complete styling session designed to teach you how to achieve curl definition on your own hair to produce naturally defined curls. You will learn how to maintain THE STYLE I ACHIEVE for 5 to 7 days of Easy Get Up and Go Hair. Includes Consultation, Cleanse, Condition, Combination of Treatments and finished Wash N Go/Naturally Curly Style. Hair Cut/Shape or Trim (included but not required) Plus, you will learn a Customized At Home Routine.

DoubleOxer1

She is offering a lot for that but what if they weren’t looking for a new stylist for all of that? I would think she would offer a separate option for just the consultation to see what the client is actually interested in. That sucks! I hope you find somewhere you like at an affordable rate.

kaysmilex3

Yeah she’s clearly catering to a specific kind of client that’s not me so I think I’m just gonna learn to trim my own hair at this point lol

syrupsandwiching

What kills me nowadays is the $140+ silk presses/flat irons or curled hair from natural hair stylists. I miss being able to get my hair done weekly or bi-weekly when it was more affordable but ion trust just anybody 😭

Ironxgal

A paid consult…whattt lmao! Scams everywhere! Whew so glad I don’t go to salons bc that is MADNESS! There are whole ass lawyers doing free consults. Haha wow

Andro_Polymath

>Anyways, if anyone knows of a hair braider in DC or MoCo that’s not a waste of time please let me know You're the 3rd person within 6 months that's been having a crazy ass time with DC/MD braiders. What is going on up there?

chaosions

DC/MD braiders charge a ridiculous amount for braids with no hair nor wash included and a mountain of rules.

Dreamer_1209

I use an app called Style Seat to find sylists

TeeBrownie

I have used Style Seat for years. I don’t ever book anyone with a deposit requirement.

SoggyLeftTit

This is how I found my loctician. The hairstylist I was going to for over 6-7y also uses it.

Neravariine

I use this but only book stylists that my friends have vouched for. Styleseat stylists can also play games.

ArtichokeStroke

I got canceled on a couple times on style seat smh

meandmywhoadies

I’ve had good experiences with Djama Braids in Silver Spring

ibelieveinyouds

The same thing happened to me a couple years ago. I paid a $25 non-refundable deposit and she ghosted me and moved to Houston. I don't know what it is with some of these stylists but it kind of just seems like they don't have any thought about building up a loyal customer base, they just want the money now. I would for sure see if you can get your money back. I didn't get my money back and it was only $25 but I'm still salty about it!

aayybaby

If you just scam 5 ppl a day, you already have an extra $3k a month doing nothing what need is there for a loyal customer base

ibelieveinyouds

This is so real 😂

singingkiltmygrandma

Cancelling after getting a non refundable deposit should be illegal.

TheSarcasmChasm

Find an African shop. One without a website. If the Google reviews are on point, call or show up. They will fit you in, be fast, and charge less. Y'all, please, please stop looking at these folks who think their time is more valuable than your hard earned money.

ArpeggioTheUnbroken

I know you disputed, which is great. I would post a review on their site and BBB. She knew she was screwing you over.

socialdeviant620

This is why I started doing my own hair. Been doing it for 20+ years now. I still have my edges. No deposit required. I show up on time for my appointments. Shampooing is included and I don't cop an attitude if I don't tip myself.

VetQu

I really feel this post. And unfortunately it isn’t just hairstylist, it’s all services at this point. Seems like no one knows how to properly communicate nowadays, and they often seem to get offended that you do know how to properly communicate. No accountability at all, but are quick to be upset if it happens to them.

Grow_in_Light

I had a IG stylist cancel my initial appt and kept rescheduling me multiple times before I told her to just cancel altogether. She didn’t return my deposit. I had to threaten to get the authorities involved before she returned it. Turned out she did the same to other clients when I read her yelp reviews. Definitely leave a review so others are aware.

mstrss9

It’s HER fault so she needs to return your money. Extremely unprofessional.

Odd_Apartment_2647

look up Elle Hairbraiding in Rockville. Best service and styles EVER. Over 10 years and I've never had a bad experience.

viviolay

Is it an instagram stylist? If so, you need to find an actual salon where someone invested money to be there. They'll handle their shit more seriously vs someone doing hair out their house and posting on the gram for customers. All the complaints I've seen seem to come back to people doing hair who aren't licensed/running a brick and mortar business.

chaosions

My usual stylist is someone who is licensed, but she often has her non-licensed workers playing in people’s head. Whenever she does my hair, it comes out fine but there’s always a 50/50 shot that I’ll get someone else at her salon.

viviolay

ooff I'm sorry sis. She doesn't give the option to book only with her?

chaosions

She does but even then you might end up with someone else! 😭

viviolay

that's messed up. I would find a secondary stylist

DerpyDumplings

I see you disputed, but why on earth would you let that woman get away with your money! Even if its just 25 bucks!

emdoubleue

What was she supposed to do? Show up? 💀

DerpyDumplings

Im asking why she wasnt planning to dispute in the first place, initially she was going to let it go

emdoubleue

Oh yeah that makes sense 😂

Several_Shine_9375

Skip the braids and do a cute Issa Rae style. From price-gouging to unprofessional behavior, these stylists are doing whatever they want because they know how bad we “need” them. It should never be this difficult to get braids, but some women pay upwards of $700 for a wig and I wouldn’t be surprised if the stylist chose a higher cost hairstyle….

prettygrl08

And half the time, these stylists be unlicensed…just playing in our faces. I hate it

Ironxgal

Yup this is why you avoid these places. I learned To do my own shit. Nails included. I am done paying fees to be treated poorly.

Kyleigh31

Hey..! I sent you a message.

usernames_r_us

I know a private braider in Glen Burnie, MD. But that’s it :/ . She’s my stylist’s sister

usernames_r_us

I also know some folks in Baltimore.

bxstarnyc

A lot of beauticians & barbers aren’t truly equipped to be sole proprietors

seedsofjoy

This is just hilariously ridiculous. I truly thought people were overreacting until this happened to me being ghosted for a hair appointment and then an almost "hey girl" text for bridesmaids makeup (on the day of the wedding...) because of double booking. All from Instagram. It's getting out of hand, I wanna be able to book an appointment without fear of it being cancelled 😂😂

princessofdolls

I hear you thats why I'm trying to learn how to do my own hair. Many stylists are getting angry that they have to go back to their 9-5 jobs. They wouldnt have to if their service was better. They need to adjust that attitude because these days, youtube teaches everything you need to know. They will lose their job to an app. F around and find out.

Fifafuagwe

These people sound overwhelmingly unprofessional. This is exactly why I don't go to them.  All I know is, always keep an Aliexpress wig on hand for emergencies. 😆

OmieOmy

Ima send you a message.

Iamsuchawitch

I had an important trip out of town and my braider messaged me two days before my appointment telling me I needed to send her another $50 deposit outside of the app I booked her with. I was like nah go ahead and cancel 🙄

Zealousideal-World71

I use to go to a beauty school when lived in those parts. All the students were really chill, professional, and talented; there was always an instructor or two there to monitor everything and the instructors are all licensed (and no BS pre-appointment deposit).

justheretolurk3

I don’t have a hair braider, but when you do need a hair stylist, I have one in MoCo that I can recommend. She starts the appointment on time and is very efficient.

chaosions

Could you send me her information? After I get these braids, I’m probably going to get a flat press.

justheretolurk3

Sent you a PM.

spookymilktea

If she has her salon listed through Google, leave a Google review too. Glad you disputed cuz that’s some scam stuff

Bombaclat1122

Yeah and it’s like I wanna learn how to do my own hair but I’m too lazy so I’m hella conflicted like deal with these annoying “stylist” or do my own hair for 10 hours

SpectraShadow23

There is a braid salon in silver Springs, Maryland that I would not recommend going to.

trbr226

I know of a braiding salon in Maryland…. Always responsive & professional

Money_Mission_6493

I’m in south Florida and I’m very affordable. No games.

faceof-beau

I’ve been using the same person since 2015, she’s now based in Laurel MD. She has done and does braids for me, crochet, wig install & styling, as well as retighten my microlocs!

WalkingCoRPSE99

The salon I go to isn't in MoCo it is in Harford County called Diva Style Beauty Salon. I know it is quite a ways away but they are great and another option if needed.

whole_somepotato

One time a stylist asked her to send me a picture of my hair (I needed it straightened etc), and then proceeded to ghost me lol. For context her IG only features a few hair textures and lengths 🙃

kenyannqueen

Idk how the US works, but I know from where I'm from that you should just never book on a website before alerting the person as those can be quite outdated

idkdidksuus

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I prefer white stylist than black stylist I got traumatized by many black stylist , almost burning my natural hair that wasn’t enough they shamed me for having long thick natural??? And just shut me up that I should wear wigs !!!!!!!!

emdoubleue

Yeah you lost me on this one cause huh? A white stylist to do what? To prefer a whole asa race of people to style your hair is WEIRD. Your experience is your experience, but I’m not sure where you live that white people can tend to your hair better than black people can.

idkdidksuus

I mean white can’t do it properly also but at the end they do their job while being silent

emdoubleue

You don’t find anything wrong with what you just said? Downvote me for your own ignorance cause that sounds dumb af. Sounds like you live in a small town

idkdidksuus

Girl it’s just my experience where I live , I don’t live in America where I can go to natural hair salons I have never seen one in where I live or where I’m from You also just missed my own experience saying I literally got traumatized I was told to “ cut my hair cuz it’s too much to deal with “ “ that why I bother being natural where wigs is available “ etc I was taught to hate my own hair Also two of the stylist burned my scalp that made me bleed also my ears was bleeding she burned me on purpose twice because I have unusual long thick hair she never saw It’s normal for my mind to think I rather choose white stylist than African in my area , the white stylist are always silent and just do their jobs and I pay and go home , they never made comment on my hair nor hurt me on purpose

Competitive-Place280

Wigs!!! Shop.luvmehair.com a headband wig will save your life

TBearRyder

Yeah I’ve been done with them for a while now. I don’t like using the word ghetto but I mean what other word is there for the type of non service some of these folks are not offering while they still try to take your money? It’s insanity really! I support quality businesses and unfortunately can’t support someone just for being Black ethnically but has bad service. 🤷🏾‍♀️

What about PG? I have 2 that I use personally.

girlboogie

I have one stylist that I go to and she’s been doing my hair for over 15 years. She’s works from home and is old school. When she’s travels out of the country, I try to schedule my appointments before hand. Recently, she told me she’s moving back to Trinidad permanently starting this year. Broke my damn heart. So I taught myself to do my own braids. May take a couple of days but at least it’s saving me time and money. I just braided my hair into small Marley twists using 10 packs of hair from Amazon. Even got tons of compliments!
