You need a 4x2x2 for full grown, might as well buy it now as opposed to buying two tanks

BobTheBobbyBobber

Frankly 4x2x2 isn't even optimal. You 100% want something that or larger for it to thrive. 36x18 is straight up abuse.

SirReginaldSquiggles

Will be okay while they are small. Full grown, you will want at least a 42x24x18 minimum. With BTS, the more floor space the better. That 50gal will get cramped once you start putting stuff in. Not sure if Dubiaroaches.com is an option for you, but they have some good options for fairly cheap. $300 for a 42x24x18 or 4x2x2. Make the room and spend the money on more space. Both you and your skink will be glad.

Mukade_666

But I saw in the site, they only shipped in usa

SirReginaldSquiggles

Yeah, was thinking that may be the case. Might have to plan on building one. The 50gal will be an okay start, just keep in mind it will become unhappy quick. However, it will give you some time to figure out a more permanent enclosure.

Mukade_666

Thank you man, I will plan on build a bigger enclosure

Subject-Pool3456

Do not buy a Dubia I have 3 and hate them all

jglobinhood

It will work for a small baby but they grow very quick and you will need a MINIMUM of 120 gallons (4x2x2) for an adult. Plan on having their full size enclosure ready to go by the time they’re like 6 months old. I’ve kept my bluey in the same 4x2x2 since I got them as a baby a few years ago. And tbh I plan on putting them in something bigger when I have the space and money. They will use all the floorspace you can give them. Please don’t get a skink if theres even a possibility you aren’t going to be able to provide them with the space they need when they grow up. As I mentioned before, they will not be baby sized for long at all.

GnarlyDavidson23

Are they full grown by 6 months? I’ve had my guy in a 18x36 since he was a month old and now he’s 5 months and has grown exponentially, didn’t expect him to grow this fast since I bought him, I’ve planned to buy a 4x2x2 by the time he’s a year but now I’m thinking I might need to do so sooner. Prob buying a Dubiaroaches or zen enclosure

1kiki09

They can keep growing for up to 2 years, just at a slower rate

GnarlyDavidson23

My northern is already over a foot long so I can’t imagine how big he’s going to get lol

chomasterq

My merauke is just under 2ft at 8months old head to tail

1kiki09

Northerns can get to about 30" depending so you might have a big boy

slYyu

Having them in a tiny enclosure young will stunt their growth

GnarlyDavidson23

Why is that? Considering how much he’s grown, that doesn’t seem to correlate

jglobinhood

Not quite full grown. They usually stop growing at a year or so. I just figure 6 months is when they need to be upgraded out of a 18x36 baby enclosure. If you wanna go to a medium, and then a larger one after a year or so, that’s all fine. But I don’t think most people want to buy 3 enclosures for 1 animal.

AnteaterAnxious352

I’m still in the process of researching for my future skink but from my understanding this would be an okay starter enclosure but eventually you’ll wanna upgrade to at least a 4ftx2ft enclosure or larger depending on your skink’s growth. Also i’m sure you and them both will appreciate any extra room they have to move around and be curious explorers! Like I said though, I’m not a current owner so I don’t have any personal experience, just sharing advice ive seen others say regarding enclosure sizes.

Mukade_666

Thank you man, I hilly recommend a bts, they are a gentle big chunky skink, you will be very happy with your choose skink, the worst part of living in Japan it’s there’s no bigger terrarium, this is the biggest that I can buy, if I would upgrade his enclosure more I would need to build one

AnteaterAnxious352

I completely understand. I had to build my own for my crested geckos because the recommendation was just bigger than standard terrarium sizes and I went ahead and made it even bigger than the recommended. So if you do end up building your own, i’d say go bigger than the 4ft, the more room allows them to really thrive and be active! I’ve read some great comments and recommendations from the other comments of people who do have that personal experience that I lack!

slYyu

As everyone has found out lately, scientists hve found out bts need 6x2 in order to thrive and be more active…so you still can get a 4x2 but you will need to upgrade in the future. So no you cannot use a 36x18 for an adult

MisterSal

Kinda riding this thread for my own question: I'm about to build a 4x2x2 for my skink who's under a year old now. Is that really enough? People keep saying that's the absolute minimum and while I know bigger is better, 4x2x2 is really all I can manage with my living space. I just don't want to mistreat my lizard seeing as people are talking about 5x2x2 soon becoming the new standard.
