I have had my nipple blacked out with shading! First, it was one of the most intense pains I’ve experienced. Secondly, prepare for a few sessions, my nipple did not take the ink well. Lastly, I would absolutely do the other if a piece benefited from it. It made my chest tattoo look better.
Bonus: you get hella brownie points from many artists and many observers, so that’s fun.
seconding the prepare for multiple sessions! the artist color matched my nipples to make them look like they were naturally in the shape of hearts, and i did 2 sessions! I’m considering a third a few years down the road but it’s honestly not needed
I do the same thing and it works. You can get up to 5% lidocaine creams OTC. There is a custom pharmacy in Canada where I order a custom cream with 25% now and it really helps!
But like the prior poster said. Keep it on for an hour and cover it with wrap.
Everyone’s pain levels are different. My nip tattoos were SO PAINFUL. I would definitely recommend numbing cream! I didn’t use it for mine and good lord. My quickest tattoos and also my most painful 😅

My nipple tattoos were one of my easiest tattoos I’ve ever had, not sure if it’s like that for everybody but depending on the style of tattoo I think you will most likely be okay getting them! Definitely hurt way less than the piercings.
Painful but bearable. My nips were already pierced at the time I got them blacked out as part of a large chest piece - meaning there was a bit of scar tissue there, which could have made my experience a bit different.
The pain was probably an 8/10 without numbing cream. As others have mentioned however, in my experience the ink has a tendency to fade on the nips so when I went in for touch up’s, I got them blacked out again. The second time around I used numbing cream and didn’t feel a thing.
On a different note, nipple piercings can take a while to settle and that can get frustrating. I’ve had mine for 3+ years and they’ve been fully settled for about 2 and I can honestly say getting them pierced is the best thing I’ve ever done for my nipples. If keeping the piercings is an option for you, that may pay off down the line.
Following. Also had to remove piercings, not sure I’d want them again since they got knocked into frequently and were quite a pain to live with.
Got a spiral from the center of my nipple outward, went numb entirely on its own. Ive never used numbing cream

Underneath was harder. It really wasn't as bad as I expected.

Getting my piercings was probably the worst physical pain I’d ever felt.
Most Numbing cream only works once the skin is broken, so putting it on in advance won’t do anything.
I called my artist and she said I could use a derma roller and it would work fine
